  • Turbidity is a key indicator to the user that the 'Discolored Water' phenomenon known to be caused by corrosion of the pipeline in the water supply system. 'Discolored Water' is defined as a state with a turbidity of the degree to which the user visually be able to recognize water. Therefore, this study used data mining techniques in order to estimate turbidity changes in water supply system. Decision tree analysis was applied in data mining techniques to develop estimation models for turbidity changes in the water supply system. The pH and residual chlorine dataset was used as variables of the turbidity estimation model. As a result, the case of applying both variables(pH and residual chlorine) were shown more reasonable estimation results than models only using each variable. However, the estimation model developed in this study were shown to have underestimated predictions for the peak observed values. To overcome this disadvantage, a high-pass filter method was introduced as a pretreatment of estimation model. Modified model using high-pass filter method showed more exactly predictions for the peak observed values as well as improved prediction performance than the conventional model.

  • The purpose of this work is to investigate the water quality change characteristics of treated water in water distribution systems of Water Treatment Plants (WTPs) of Jeju City. For this, the raw water, treated water and tap water that did not pass (named as not pass-tap water) and passed through the water storage tank (named as pass-tap water) were sampled and analyzed monthly from September 2001 to August 2002, for four (W, S, B and O) WTPs except for D WTP (where treated water is not supplied continuously) among WTPs of Jeju City. The concentrations of $NO_3^-$ and $Cl^-$ of treated water in distribution systems changed little, but changed seasonally, which is considered to be based on the seasonal variation of the quality of raw water. The pH of treated water changed little in distribution systems for S WTP, but for the other WTPs, the pH of not pass-tap water was similar to that of treated water and the pH of pass-tap water was higher than that of treated water. The turbidity of treated water in distribution systems changed little except for W2 of W WTP and S4 and S5 of S WTP, where it was higher than that of each treated water. The residual chlorine concentrations between treated water and not pass-tap water changed little, but those between treated water and pass-tap water changed greatly, based on the its long residence time in water storage tank and so its reaction with organic matter, etc or its evaporation. The concentrations of TTHMs (total trihalomethanes) and $CHCl_3$ that induce cancers in water distribution systems of these WTPs, were much lower than their water quality criteria and those in other cities. The concentrations of TTHMs of treated water and not pass-tap water were similar, but concentrations of pass-tap water were 1.5 to 2.0 times higher than those of treated water and not pass-tap water, due to the reaction of residual chlorine and organic matter, etc, with the result of long residence time in water storage tank.

  • The industrial systems contain many sites and components susceptible to biofilms formation. Biofilms play an important role in microbial growth and industrial fouling. Thus, the control of the biofilms in industrial systems has been emphasized, however, the efficient controlling method was not provided yet. Since silver compounds have no residual and corrosion problem, the interest for silver compounds as a biofilm control disinfectant has been increased. In this study, we attempted to examine the disinfection ability of silver compounds. The disinfection efficiency of two silver compounds(silver ion and silver oxide) were evaluated for biofilms in comparison with suspended cells using well known indicator microorganisms(E. coli, P. aeruginosa) and compared with that of chlorine. Silver compounds were found to be effective in inactivating E. coli and P. aeruginosa biofilms. The reason for superiority of silver compounds as biofilm disinfectant was suggested by that silver can penetrate into the inner biofilm matrix faster than chlorine without consumption. This study reports that the disinfectant which is highly effective in inactivating the suspended cells in water becomes the less effective for controlling biofilm because of its high reactivity. This results imply that the effective strategy for biofilm control can be achieved by considering thoroughly the chemical nature of disinfects and biofilm structure and the reactivity between them.

  • Disinfection of electrolyzed water (EW) on strawberry by immersion washing and quality changes during storage at $5^{\circ}\C$ was compared with one immersed in chlorine water and not treated. Total count of strawberry washed with EW by immersion in 10 volumes of EW for 20 min was decreased to about 2 log cycle compared to the untreated And rate of microbial growth during storage was lower than ethers. Decaying ratio in strawberry treated with electrolyzed low-alkalinewater (EW-2) showed lower as of 10% level after 5 days of storage compared) to the untreated and the treated with chlorine water (CW). Hardness in the treatment of EW was not changed significantly until 3 days of storage, after then rather increased. Change in surface color of strawberries was observed; L value in the CW treated and the untreated increased whereas it decreased in the treatment of EW. And color difference(${\Delta}E$) during storage was observed the lowest in the untreated until 3 days of storage. The initial value of residual chlorine in the treatment of EW was at the level of $0.04{\sim}0.06ppm$, and $1{\sim}3$ days later showed almost the equal value to level of $0.02{\sim}0.03ppm$ in all treatments. Sensory characteristic during storage was preferable on strawberry washed with EW (EW-1 and EW-2) to the other treatments.

  • The detection and distribution of Aeromonas in water supplies were investigated by using the USEPA Method 1605. Water samples were collected from the Han River, finished waters and tap waters supplied from Water Treatment Plants in Seoul monthly from July 2002 to December 2003. Aeromonas species in each water sample were quantified based on the development of yellow colonies on the surface of membrane filter using a selective medium (Ampicillin-Dextrin Agar with Vancomycin). The Quality Control (QC) for this study met the acceptance criteria of Method 1605. The concentrations of Aeromonas species in surface water samples ranged from $1.0{\times}10^{0}\;to\;9.8{\times}10^{3}\;CFU/ml$. Aeromonas species were found only in one tap water sample with concentration of 1 CFU/500 ml. No Aeromonas species were found in any finished water samples. Aeromonas species detected here were identified as A. salmonicida(51%), A. caviae(4.7%), A. schubertti(3.4%), A. sobria(3.8%), A. hydrophila(2.1%), and A. ichithiosmia(0.4%). A. salmonicida was the dominant species, which is of no significance to human health. Chlorine resistance of A. salmonicida was evaluated and as a result, 99.99% of A. salmonicida decreased after 30 seconds exposure at residual free chlorine 0.2 mg/L. These suggest that the waters supplied in Seoul may be safe against the pathogenic agent Aeromonas.

  • The formation pattern of DBPs (disinfection by-products) in raw water treated with hypochlorite, chlorine disinfectant was studied. TOC (total organic carbon), residual chlorine, turbidity and 14 DBPs in raw water from Han-river and Nakdong river during 1 ~ 14 days were determined. Total DBPs in Han river was 101.3 ng/mL (789.6 nM) after 7days and THMs (trihalomethanes) are the dominant portion of 68%. HAAs (haloacetic acids) and chloral hydrate were determined 19% and 10% respectively. In Nakdong river total DBPs was 98.4 ng/mL (678.6 nM) and dominant class was HAAs. (55.8 ng/mL, 57%) THMs(34%) and N-compounds like HANs (haloacetonitriles, 5%) and chloropicrin were increased. It may be explained that high concentration of NH4-N in Nakdong river react with chlorine produced chloramine and this formed different pattern of DBPs. As a result, total DBPs formation pattern depends on raw water and disinfectant and in generally the initial concentration of acidic HAAs was high and THMs was increased gradually.

  • This study was performed to investigate the disinfection efficiency and the generation characteristics of disinfection by-products (DBPs) in the sewage effluent. In the case of total coliforms, disinfection efficiency higher than 99%, the required contact time was 30 min at chlorine dose of 0.5 mg/L, 20 min at 1.0 mg/L, and 10 min at 1.5 mg/L, respectively. When the sewage effluent was disinfected with chlorine dose of 0.5 mg/L for 10 min, the maximum generation concentration of trihalomethanes (THMs), haloacetonitriles (HANs) and haloacetic acid (HAAs) were $32.2{\mu}g/L$, $2.97{\mu}g/L$, and $16.29{\mu}g/L$, respectively. The concentration of chloroform was $28.4{\mu}g/L$ corresponding to 88.1% of the THMs. The concentration of HANs and HAAs were found to be inconsiderable. The average residual chlorine concentration of sewage effluent was 0.4 mg/L, the generation concentration of THMs was maximum $1.72{\mu}g/L$ and average $2.79{\mu}g/L$. HANs and HAAs were under the detection limit by GC/MSD.

  • Recently, environmental pollution has become a big problem in industry and many researches have been done in order to preserve the environment. In the grinding process, the coolant has great influence on environment. It contains several chemicals(sulfur, phosphorus and chlorine) to improve the grinding efficiency. If these additives go into the workplace atmosphere, it is harmful for workers. It can also cause the environment pollution. Because of these reasons many studies have been done to minimize the amount of coolant. However the small amount of coolant can cause the thermal defect on the ground surface layer. This study forced the effects of the compressed cold air when the spindle shaft materials(SCM4 & SCM21) were cylindrical ground with WA wheel. The compressed cold air was used as the coolant and grinding performance was compared with that of the conventional grinding fluids(emulsion). Many experiments were carried out with these two cooling materials. The surface roughness, residual stress, and roundness were measured for the cylindrical grinding. The test results showed that the compressed cold air was very useful as the cooling materials for grinding process. It was also efficient to minimize the thermal defects of workpiece and could also play a role in solving environmental pollution.

  • Drinking water treatment is enhanced by coagulant dosages and chlorine injection because of pH increase in raw water in droughty seasons such as spring and fall. But water quality deterioration is occurred by increase in residual aluminium and disinfection by-products. Coagulation process can be used to control natural organic matter (NOM) during water treatment. The effect of coagulation process appeared to depend on the pH of water rather than coagulant dosages. In this study, for water treatment in high pH season $H_2SO_4$ was applied for pH adjustment at full scale. Before and after pH adjustment by $H_2SO_4$ injection, water quality of drinking water was evaluate. In the result of investigation of total organic carbon (TOC) removal in high pH season, TOC was removed approximately 30~40%, which showed decrease in water treatment efficiency. Also, it is increased both particle numbers and residual Al concentration in the water. After $H_2SO_4$ injection for adjustment to pH<7.5 in settled water, treated water turbidity decreased in 0.047 NTU from 0.059 NTU, and particle numbers of filtered water decreased in 20/mL from 90/mL. On the other side, TOC removal efficiency increased in approximately 10% after adjustment of pH. In the result of decrease in pH in raw water through more coagulants and prechlorine without $H_2SO_4$ injection, trihalomethanes (THMs) concentration increased in $16{\mu}g/L$ from $8{\mu}g/L$.

  • Intermittently aerated activated sludge process was applied as a water reuse process of $70m^3/day$ for the upgrade of organic, nitrogen and phosphorus removal efficiency and clarifier performance. After application of the intermittently aeration, removal efficiency of BOD, SS, T-N and T-P were achieved 95%, 90%, 80% and 60%, respectively. Removal efficiencies in intermittently aerated process were considerably increased. comparing to those of continuously aerated activated sludge process. Also sludge rising problem in clarifier was improved. Average concentration of supplied reusing water were BOD 5 mg/L, turbidity 4 NTU and after chlorination, residual chlorine 0.4 mg/L, coliform 0 MPN/100mL. Intermittently aerated activated sludge process could be one of the best alternative process for the retrofit of conventional activated sludge process for the removal of nutrient in water reuse system.
