Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) is a non-invasive and low-cost technique that estimates body composition based on the distribution of water and electrolytes in the body by analyzing body's electrical responses to source voltages. In this work, we carried out a systematic literature review on BIA researches in traditional East Asian medicine (TEAM). For comparison, firstly we introduced the concept and principle of BIA, and offered a general overview of research trends in western medical perspectives. We searched through the databases of Oriental Medicine Advanced Searching Integrated System and DataBase Periodical Information Academic for the articles published between 1994 and 2013, with keywords such as 'BIA', 'bioelectrical impedance' and 'impedance'. Among the rough-searched 274 articles, we finally selected 21 articles appropriate to the intended research field. The selected articles were categorized into diagnosis in Sasang medicine, impedance analysis in meridian system, and change of body composition after taking herbal medicine. We found that most of BIA researches in TEAM were preliminary and remained in the peripheral levels which is far behind the western medical research activities. Therefore, more efforts are needed to study BIA in association with major subjects such as pattern identification or physiological/pathological phenomena. In addition, methodological breakthrough of BIA is possible by applying the diagnostic concepts of the TEAM in relation to the balance of Qi and Blood.
Objectives The purpose of this review is to analyze trends of domestic research in Korean medicine treatment for frozen shoulder. Methods Among the clinical papers published from January 1, 2000 to August 2023, papers that treated frozen shoulders with Korean medicine treatment were searched through five domestic databases (Oriental Medicine Advanced Searching Integrated System, KMbase, Research Information Sharing Service, Science ON, Korean studies Information Service System). Results Finally, 12 studies were included. Three studies were clinical trials and 9 were observational studies. The most commonly used treatment was acupuncture. Range of movement (range of motion) and visual analogue scale were frequently used as measurement methods. Studies with significant effects were 66.6% in controlled trials and 100% in studies without control group. Conclusions In this study, literature on Korean medicine treatment for frozen shoulder was reviewed. As a result of the review, Korean medicine treatment for frozen shoulder showed significant results. However, there have been several limitations and suggest that more research and higher levels of research on Korean medicine treatment of frozen shoulder need to be conducted.

Obejectives : The purpose of this study was to analyze the papers from 2015 to 2019 to identify trends in gastrointestinal studies in Korean medicine. Methods : The search for related papers was conducted in 10 oriental medicine journals that were actively reported and published, easy to search using the Internet, and freely accessible to researchers. Results : There were many studies related to the stomach, and in particular, there were many papers confirming the effectiveness of Korean medicine treatment for functional digestion, hypersensitive intestinal syndrome, and gastrointestinal reflux diseases. It is regrettable that only about 60 papers of research on gastrointestinal diseases have been published in 10 journals over the past five years of research on gastrointestinal diseases. Conclusions : These results suggest that the need to promote practical research on functional gastrointestinal disorders should be evaluated higher in the Korean medical community, and the development of gastrointestinal-related treatments for Korean medicine can improve the quality of life for all of us.
Objectives : The purpose of this study is to explore the trends of Korean medical study on stress in the industrial worker. Methods : We received numbers of the studies about stress in the industrial worker from 6 Korean web databases, using key words such as 'Industry AND Stress', 'Oriental medicine AND Stress', 'Worker AND Stress', 'Workplace AND Stress'. We received 12 research papers and they were analyzed and the journals, the authors, the contents of 3 classification of those research papers. Results : Among them, we had 6 reviews of Dept. of preventive medicine and Dept. of third medicine, college of Korean Medicine, Won-kwang University, and the rest of them were 6 reviews. We had 4 reviews of Korean Journal of Oriental Preventive Medical Society, 2 reviews of the Journal of Traditional Korean Medicine, 2 reviews of Journal of Oriental Neuropsychiatry and so on. According to the contents of reviews, we had 7 reviews of correlation of industrial worker and stress, 4 reviews of cause on the industrial worker's stress and 1 case report. Conclusions : We reviewed the trends of Korean medical study on stress in the industrial worker. The stress in the industrial workers were related with the type of occupation, social psychology, drinking, smoking, the satisfaction of job, the harmony of organization. And we knew that the musculoskeletal pain was related to the industrial worker's stress. In the future, abundant case studies, follow-up trials and RCTs should be done about the industrial worker's stress.
Objectives The purpose of this study was to identify the research trends and major fields of Sasang Constitutional Medicine by analyzing the topics of papers contained in the Journal of Sasang Constitutional Medicine from the first issue to 2018. Methods To classify the research themes of the paper, theory, Characteristics in Sasang Constitution(SC), Diagnosis in SC, Treatment in SC, etc. categories and subcategories were created. Two researchers reviewed the title, abstract, and text of the paper and classified them according to the category classification. In case of disagreement, the category was determined through discussion with one of the remaining researchers. Results & Conclusions A total of 1,169 papers published in the Journal of Sasang Constitutional Medicine from the first issue to 2018. The number of published papers has increased steadily since the first issue of the Journal of Sasang Constitutional Medicine, and in 2008, the largest number of papers were published, but since then, the number of papers has gradually decreased. When classifying the categories of published papers according to research themes, the Theory field occupied a large portion in the early stages, but since then, the proportion has decreased steadily, and the number of publications has plummeted since 2012. On the other hand, in Treatment in SC field, its proportion has soared to account for about half of the papers since 2001. In Characteristics in SC and Diagnosis in SC fields, since the early 1990s, the number of publications has been consistently maintained.
Objectives : The aim of this study is to analyze the domestic research trend focusing on well-being studies in medicine. Through this study, the researchers attempt to explore the research trends of the well-being in Traditional Korean Medicine. Methods : Well-being as a key word was searched on representative domestic databases of articles and the researchers collected the articles of medical journals published from 1980 to 2012. Finally 416 articles of well-being were selected. Results : Among the fields of medicine, well-being studies have been mainly proceeded by nursing science, preventive medicine and psychiatry. Well-being studies that mainly analyzed the variables associated wih quality of life and well-being to cancer patients, workers and elderly. But every measuring instrument searched with well-being was adapted from western tools. And there has not been any study used measuring instrument of well-being and interventions related to Traditional Korean Medicine. Conclusions : In order to handle the new wave of well-being and quality of life, research methods using tools to measure these variables need to be developed. Furthermore, it seems to be necessary that research on how to take advantage of Yangseng that is health concept of Traditional Korean Medicine.
Pediatric epilepsy, a chronic, recurrent brain disorder, is the most common neurological disorder in children. Its prevalence is increasing. Early management is very important since 30~40% of cases persist into adulthood. To provide basic data for future clinical research on pediatric epilepsy using Korean medicine treatment and cooperation between Western medicine doctors and Korean medicine doctors, we reviewed recent clinical research in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) using herbal medicine for pediatric epilepsy. A total of 23 articles (1 clinical practice guideline, 3 systematic reviews, 15 randomized controlled trials (RCTs), and 4 non-RCTs) were reviewed in this study. The authors summarized characteristics of included studies regarding study subjects, diagnostic tools, pattern identification tools, treatment period, evaluation tools, detail of herbal medicines, treatment effects, and adverse events. Combination therapy using both herbal medicine (HM) and anti-epileptic drugs (AEDs) was performed more frequently than herbal medicine alone. Liver-pacifying medicinal, water-draining medicine, and orifice-opening medicine were frequently used. The main single HMs were Cheonma, Boglyeong, Jogudeung, and Seogchangpo. Combined therapy using HM and AEDs had significant benefits in improving total effective rate. It also appeared to be safer than AEDs. However, since the quality of clinical trials was poor and only studies in the last 10 years were included, the clinical evidence was uncertain. Finally, the authors provided limitations of this study and several suggestions for future research based on our analysis results.
Objectives : To review and summarize the existing evidence on acupuncture treatment for cancer and cancer related symptoms. Methods: Literature searches were made through domestic and international databases. Data were extracted according to pre-defined criteria. The methodological quality was assessed using the Modified Jadad scale. Results: Seven studies were included. Two of the studies were high in methodological quality. One study concerning acupuncture treatment for cancerous dyspnea reported insignificant differences between the treatment group and placebo group. The other study concerning auricular acupuncture for cancer related pain showed significant pain relief compared with the control group. All the other studies were non-blinded or uncontrolled trials. Conclusion : The hypothesis that acupuncture may be effective for the treatment of cancer is not supported by the data in recent clinical trials. More accurately designed randomized control trials (RCT) are needed.
Objectives: The objective of this study was to perform a scoping review to describe clinical study trends on Qigong in order to identify further directions of Qigong in Korean medicine. Methods: Under the Arksey and O'Malley methodological framework, PubMed was searched to identify articles published from January 1, 2019 to June 28, 2021. A total of 224 articles were retrieved. Results were systematically filtered by two independent reviewers based on inclusion/exclusion criteria. Publication information, disease, intervention and research results of a total of 153 articles were extracted and analyzed. Results: Asia had the largest number of Qigong studies (82 studies, 65%). Most research studies were conducted in the academic field of Medicine (n=109, 86.5%), including Complementary and Alternative Medicine (n=35), Medicine (miscellaneous) (n=15), and Oncology (n=15). Based on ICD-10 classification, Mental and Behavioral Disorder (n=25, 19.8%) was the most frequently analyzed decease, followed by Neoplasm (n=24) and Disease of the Nervous system (n=12). Almost half of all studies were Systematic Reviews. RCTs only accounted for 25.4%. Interventions were very diverse and inconsistent. Sixty (47.6%) studies analyzed Qigong as a single intervention. In 66 cases, Qigong was analyzed as part of a large category such as Mind-Body intervention. Most studies designed a Donggong (動功) program. The age of the population was relatively high as 47.1% of all studies were conducted on middle aged or older adults. Conclusions: These findings suggest that further standardized research on Qigong, especially Junggong (靜功), needs to be conducted by developing research protocols and practice programs to verify effects of Qigong and utilize Qigong as a medical intervention in Korean Medicine.
