Purpose: This paper aims to evaluate and reinstate preventative guidelines necessary for a sound academic journal (or academic conference) for the articles published by KODISA and its branch journals. As questionable or predatory academic journals and academic conferences are rapidly increasing, preemptively establishing preventative standards have become essential to obviate questionable academic activities. Research design, data and methodology: This is an analytical study that explores and examines research, publication ethics, and misconducts. For this purpose, research ethics related data in overseas and domestic academic journals have been examined and analyzed. Results: The issues identified from this research are as follows: enhancing the expertise of editor-inchief (no concurrent jobs for major and non-major area); clarifying the index; complying with the review policy (The review policy should be publicly announced); complying with anonymous review process; complying with 3 peer-review policy, complying with the publication policy as per field of study; avoiding conference hosting at holiday resorts unless unavoidable; complying with the planned programs and cancelling events if not feasible; following proper review standards and management for all journals, including the journals publishing large number of articles (all materials should be prepared in case explanatory data is required); complying with the marketing policy standards; complying with the impact factor; excluding personal solicitation; and complying with the general policy. Conclusions: Questionable and predatory academic activities by academic organizations and journals will continue, and it is the responsibility of the individual scholars to identify and reject these types of dubious academic activities. This study provides standards to prevent the possibility of questionable academic activities that have been conducted in the past. The analysis and findings will strengthen the continued efforts of KODISA as it strives to be a transparent, ethical, and professional academic association, and the association will continue to foster an academic environment that is well-respected by scholars and practitioners throughout the world.
This study is a critical assessment of research productivity through publication among scientists and engineers. This research aims to analyze the ethical requirements and to find the problems for the publication guidelines of oriental medicine journals. A total of 13 domestic journals, related to oriental medicine and registered in 'National Research Foundation of Korea' list, were selected for the analysis of ethical requirements. We inquired the revised year of the publication guideline and the status of ethics committee of selected journals. The ethical requirements of publication guidelines were evaluated by categorizing them into Institutional Review Board(IRB), Helsinki Declaration, Informed Consent, confidentiality and anonymity of subjects, and conflict of interest. In the case of revised year of the publication guidelines, the year of the most recently revised journal was 2011. However, the revised year of publication guidelines were not announced for three journals and a few journals haven't revised the publication guidelines since 2002. In the case of ethics committee status, four journals out of 13 journals maintained the ethics committee. In the result of ethical requirement analysis, nine journals included the information for confidentiality and anonymity of subjects, and four journals included the information for Helsinki Declaration and Informed Consent. However, only one journal included the information for IRB and conflict of interest. Recently, the importance of clinical researches has been increased to prove the effect of oriental medicine scientifically and objectively. The clinical researches should be considered in scientific side and ethical side as well, because they have potential risks to human subjects. In this sense, announcing the ethical requirements in the publication guidelines can be one way to secure the morality of researches. Thus, it is required to prepare correct publication guidelines and ethical requirements in oriental medicine journals.
Purpose - To improve and strengthen existing publication and research ethics, KODISA has identified and presented various cases which have violated publication and research ethics and principles in recent years. The editorial office of KODISA has been providing and continues to provide advice and feedback on publication ethics to researchers during peer review and editorial decision making process. Providing advice and feedback on publication ethics will ensure researchers to have an opportunity to correct their mistakes or make appropriate decisions and avoid any violations in research ethics. The purpose of this paper is to identify different cases of ethical violation in research and inform and educate researchers to avoid any violations in publication and research ethics. Furthermore, this article will demonstrate how KODISA journals identify and penalize ethical violations and strengthens its publication ethics and practices. Research design, data and methodology - This paper examines different types of ethical violation in publication and research ethics. The paper identifies and analyzes all ethical violations in research and combines them into five general categories. Those five general types of ethical violations are thoroughly examined and discussed. Results - Ethical violations of research occur in various forms at regular intervals; in other words, unethical researchers tend to commit different types of ethical violations repeatedly at same time. The five categories of ethical violation in research are as follows: (1) Arbitrary changes or additions in author(s) happen frequently in thesis/dissertation related publications. (2) Self plagiarism, submitting same work or mixture of previous works with or without using proper citations, also occurs frequently, but the most common type of plagiarism is changing the statistical results and using them to present as the results of the empirical analysis; (3) Translation plagiarism, another ethical violation in publication, is difficult to detect but occurs frequently; (4) Fabrication of data or statistical analysis also occurs frequently. KODISA requires authors to submit the results of the empirical analysis of the paper (the output of the statistical program) to prevent this type of ethical violation; (5) Mashup or aggregator plagiarism, submitting a mix of several different works with or without proper citations without alterations, is very difficult to detect, and KODISA journals consider this type of plagiarism as the worst ethical violation. Conclusions - There are some individual cases of ethical violation in research and publication that could not be included in the five categories presented throughout the paper. KODISA and its editorial office should continue to develop, revise, and strengthen their publication ethics, to learn and share different ways to detect any ethical violations in research and publication, to train and educate its editorial members and researchers, and to analyze and share different cases of ethical violations with the scholarly community.

This study is a critical assessment of research productivity through publication among scientists and engineers. This study scrutinizes previous findings on the correlates and determinant3 of publication productivity: Provides overview and organization of that knowledge ; indicates gape and shortcomings n the research; and identifies the questions and issues which are both answered and unanswered. through the analysis of the 223 mail questionnaires collected from professors of mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, chemistry and physics, this study obtains the particular determinants of publication productivity at the science and engineering schools in Korea. Especially, early research productivity and the number of doctoral students are very important to publish good research articles. Also the qualities of professors' Ph. D. institution and employing university are critical influencing factors to publication productivity. The data are analyzed using correlation, ANOVA, and multiple regression analysis and all the regression models are statistically significant. All the variables in this study are focused on the socialization of individual research scientists and any psychological or personal background variables are excluded, because the perspective of this article is not that of scientific sociologist but of science and technology Policy interest. This study proves that there exists an scriptive advantage according to the individual background such as his Ph. D. institution and employing university in Korea. This study also shows that all research resources and research performances are unequally distributed. This result proposes that supporting basic research at university must begins with relative assessment of researchers, departments, and institutions in consideration with their research environment and to evaluate researchers in compared with excellent research university like SNU, KAIST, POSTECH is unequal and inadequate.

This research uses a new approach to analyze the extent of influence journal papers have on the progress of varied research fields by estimation of subject-based influence on research other than impact factor that relies on citation index. It is initiated with the hypothesis that earlier established citation relations between journal and citing paper, which reveals the research field that contains the highest citation index and hence has received the greatest contribution from a particular journal, would have inconsistent contribution to the research field over the year of journal publication. The target research is primarily 128 journal papers and 4,123 citing papers from Information Systems Research published in the years 2001, 2004, 2007, and 2010. The characteristics of citation history and hallmarks of research field of citing papers were studied and analysis on significant distinction between citing fields based on the year of publication was performed. The analysis results show the order of citation rate to be highest from Computer Science (2,221 cases), Business & Economics (2,191 cases), and Information Science & Library Science (1,901 cases). The citation history of the journal, nonetheless, indicates increase in citation during 2-3 years after the earliest publication till it achieves constant citation. The statistical analysis shows significant variation in citing fields in accordance with the publication year; especially in 2010, journal contribution has increased in the fields of Business & Economics, Operations Research & Management Science, and Health Care Sciences & Services but, however, is reduced in Education & Educational Research and Social Sciences - Other Topics.
Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to review, analyze, and learn from the most recent cases of plagiarism and to identify and promote ethical practices in research and publication. Research design, data, and methodology - This is a case study, an analytical approach, which focuses on analyzing the most recent cases of plagiarism to identify ethical issues and concerns in journal publication practices. Results - Despite the availability of many software and web-based applications and programs to detect plagiarism, there is no universal or perfect plagiarism detection application available to ease the editorial responsibility. Lack of understanding the concept and ignorance of plagiarism were the main reasons for the cases of plagiarism. Conclusions - Some of the plagiarism cases reveal a lack of knowledge in proper application of in-text citations and references, including quoting, requiting, paraphrasing, and citing sources, etc. Furthermore, the need for recognizing and considering the distorted and falsified primary and secondary research data as plagiarism is essential to enhance ethical practices in journal publication.
Background : The publication rate of presentations at medical international meetings has ranged from 11% to 78% with an average of 45%. To date, there are no studies about the final rate of publications at scientific meetings associated with plastic surgery from Korea. The present authors investigated the publication rate among the presentations at meetings associated with plastic surgery. Methods : The titles and authors of the abstracts from oral and poster presentations were collected from the program books of the Congress of the Korean Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons (CKSPRS) for 2005 to 2007 (58th-63rd). All of the abstracts presented were searched for using PubMed, KoreaMed, KMbase, and Google Scholar. The titles, key words from the titles, and the authors' names were then entered in database programs. The parameters reviewed included the publication rate, type of presentation including running time, affiliation, subspecialty, time to publication, and publication journal. Results : A total of 1,176 abstracts presented at the CKSPRS from 2005 to 2007 were evaluated. 38.7% of the abstracts, of which oral presentations accounted for 41.0% and poster presentations 34.8%, were published as full papers. The mean time to publication was 15.04 months. Among journals of publication, the Journal of the Korean Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons was most used. Conclusions : Brilliant ideas and innovative approaches are being discussed at CKSPRS. The 38.7% publication rate found from this research appeared a bit lower than the average rate of medical meetings. If these valuable presentations are not available as full papers, the research would be a waste of time and effort.
Objective: The aim of this study is to investigate the attributing factors influencing major research areas of the papers published in the journal of Ergonomics Society of Korea (JESK). Background: Ergonomics has a wide range of research areas. Diversity of research topic is one of the major strong points of this discipline especially in the era of fusion. Dominant areas among the diversity changed from time to time. It is interesting to know the attributing factors of the dominant areas. Method: During the past three decades JESK has published 649 articles. As an editor of the JESK, I reviewed these papers and sorted them into the detailed research fields of ergonomics; (1) technical group (TG) s of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society (HFES), (2) editing groups of the journal of Ergonomics Abstracts and (3) TGs of the Ergonomics Society of Korea (ESK). I also listed major events which might affect the publication trend. Results: Anthropometry was the most dominant area all the time. Health and safety area has been steadily increasing publication amount. Conclusion: Government research funding was the main attributing factor determining the publication trend of the JESK. Application: The results of the publishing trend analysis might help to determine the editing policy of the JESK.

This study is a comparative analysis of R&D performance and research collaboration relationship among ten ocean research institutes in the Republic of Korea and foreign nations through analyzing SCI publications from 2008 to 2012. The result indicated that SIO, WHOI, and NOC had the highest number of publications, while research institutes in East Asian nations including NFRDI, KIOST, IOCAS, and JAMSTEC had the notable growth in publication. In terms of number of publication per researcher, SIO, WHOI, and NOC had relatively high number. In terms of publication per research budget (1 billion KRW), number of publication was high in the order of IOCAS, NOC, GEOMAR, SIO. The number of Citations Per Publications (CPP) was high among WHOI, SIO, NOC, GEOMAR, JAMSTEC, and IFREMER, which are North American, European and Japanese institutes. The average Impact Factor (IF) of journal submission per publication for IFREMER, KIOST and JAMSTEC was relatively increasing, while the number was fluctuating in other institutes. The analysis of research collaboration among institutes around the globe showed that the collaboration in Asia was relatively closed, whereas it was more open in Europe. In the case of Europe and Asia, higher number of research collaboration among nations also increased the quality of submitted articles.
