Factors affecting vegetable preference in adolescents: stages of change and social cognitive theory

  • BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Despite the importance of consuming sufficient amounts of vegetables, daily vegetable intake among adolescents in Korea is lower than the current dietary recommendation. The objective of this study was to examine determinants affecting vegetable preference in order to suggest a stage-tailored education strategy that can promote vegetable consumption in adolescents. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Adolescents (n = 400, aged 16-17 years) from two high schools participated in a cross-sectional study. Survey variables were vegetable preference, the social cognitive theory (SCT) and stages of change (SOC) constructs. Based on vegetable preference, subjects were classified into two groups: a low-preference group (LPG) and a high-preference group (HPG). SOC was subdivided into pre-action and action/maintenance stages. To compare SCT components and SOC related to vegetable preference, chi-squared and t-tests, along with stepwise multiple-regression analysis, were applied. RESULTS: In the LPG, a similar number of subjects were classified into each stage. Significant differences in self-efficacy, affective attitudes, and vegetable accessibility at home and school were detected among the stages. Subjects in the HPG were mainly at the maintenance stage (81%), and there were significant differences among the stages regarding self-efficacy, affective attitudes, and parenting practice. In the predictions of vegetable preference, self-efficacy and parenting practice had a significant effect in the "pre-action" stage. In the action/maintenance stage, outcome expectation, affective attitudes, and vegetable accessibility at school had significant predictive value. In predicting the vegetable preference for all subjects, 42.8% of the predictive variance was accounted for by affective attitudes, self-efficacy, and vegetable accessibility at school. CONCLUSION: The study revealed that different determinants affect adolescent vegetable preference in each stage. Self-efficacy and affective attitudes are important determinants affecting vegetable preference. Additionally, school-based nutrition intervention that focuses on enhancing affective attitudes, self-efficacy, and vegetable exposure may constitute an effective education strategy for promoting vegetable consumption among adolescents.

An Analysis on the Coupling of Korea's Economy and U.S. Economy through the Asset Market (자산시장을 통한 한국경제와 미국경제의 동조화 분석)

  • Three different models have been consecutively employed with the U.S. yield curve and the Korean composite stock price index, firstly to see the coupling between the economies of the U.S. and Korea, secondly to find out the time consumed completing the coupling, and lastly to figure out the impact of the recent U.S. financial crisis on this coupling. This study has, first of all, produced an empirical research outcome which proved the existence of coupling between two countries' economies. The direction of this coupling was consistent with the general expectation that when the yield spread between the U.S. 10-year Treasury Note and the U.S. 3-month Treasury Bill increased which often occurred with better prospects of U.S. economy, the asset price of emerging economies including Korea also rose reflecting the accompanying change in investment atmosphere in favor of risk. It has also found out that the degree of the coupling was maximized with a lag of one week. And finally the recent US financial crisis has been revealed to reduce the degree of the coupling by as much as half in a regression model with a dummy variable.

Effects of Taping on Balance and Gait in Patients With Stroke: A Meta-analysis

  • Background: Stroke is one of the causes affecting gait and balance. Taping is considered an effective method for improving balance and gait in stroke patients. Numerous studies have confirmed the functional effects of taping in stroke patients. However, there is still no consensus regarding the use of taping to improve gait and balance. Objects: The purpose of this review was to investigate the effects of taping on the balance and gait of patients with stroke through meta-analysis of studies. Methods: PubMed, Medline, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane Review, RISS, DBPia, and Science on were used to collect articles on Kinesio and non-elastic taping. The key terms were "Stroke", "Hemiplegia", "Taping", "Tape", "Balance", and "Gait" with cut-off of October, 2022. Taping group was compared with control groups with sham, placebo, and no taping. The outcome measures included the Berg Balance Scale (BBS), Timed Up and Go (TUG) test, and gait speed (cm/s). Eighteen studies (524 patients) were selected for the meta-analysis. Results: Overall, taping improved balance and gait in stroke patients, and Kinesio and non-elastic taping had similar effect sizes. Taping improved the BBS and TUG, and was most effective on gait speed. Contrary to the expectation that a longer duration of taping would be more affective, taping was most effective when the total taping duration was shorter than 500 minutes. In addition, the effect size of taping was greater when it was simultaneously attached to multiple locations. Conclusion: This meta-analysis supports the use of taping to improve gait and balance in stroke patients, and provides guidelines for the location, duration, and type of tape to increase taping efficiency.

  • Electric cars are expected to increase quality of life by reducing air pollution and to contribute to economic growth by creating new businesses. However, electric car adoption has lagged and has not satisfied public expectation. One of the primary reasons for this outcome is the slow charging speed or inconvenience of charging a battery. Under the insufficient diffusion of electric cars, pushing business entities to construct charging facilities is undesirable for a policy maker to increase the adoption rate because of cost and management issues. This study adopts the design science methodology to interpret the problem of deploying electric car charging stations in the view of information systems. A trip planning algorithm is suggested on the basis of the theory of range anxiety. We investigate issues related to the current charging locations using data from drivers' car navigation devices. We also review its applicability to trip planning to obtain insights.

The effect of the convergent operation of learning coaching and reward system on learning community students' academic self-efficacy and learning outcome (학습코칭과 보상시스템의 융합적 운영이 학습공동체 참여 대학생들의 학업적 자기효능감과 학습성과에 미치는 효과)

  • The aim of this research is to find out how convergent operation of the learning coaching and compensation system affects the academic self-efficiency and learning performance of university students. In the second semester, a compensation system was prepared based on learning coaching and learning outcomes, made a notice in advance, and conducted a survey before and after operation to measure the academic self-efficacy. In addition, the MLST-II Learning Strategy Diagnosis Examination was conducted on G university students to diagnose the learning tendency. As a result, although G University students felt a reluctance by coaching the learning community and expected negative results during the course of participation in the learning community due to low motivation and low expectation of results, they showed a significant improvement in academic self-efficiency and learning outcomes. Therefore, even students with negative learning tendency will need to consider how to operate these programs in the educational field, as the expert's learning coaching and compensation systems produce positive results for students' academic self-efficiency and learning outcomes rather than leaving them to autonomy.

The Effects of Use Patterns and Service Quality on Performance and Use Satisfaction on Library Information System (도서관의 이용패턴과 서비스품질이 정보화성과지각 및 만족에 미치는 영향)

  • Consumers' overall satisfaction on a specific library use is inferred to be primarily accrued from their performance perception and use satisfaction on the library information service system as recent information technology is being rapidly improved and more libraries are being equipped with advanced information technologies. However, prior research has been conducted only on general library service quality and visitors' satisfaction, leaving the important aspects of visitors' library use and information performance perception. Thus, the objectives of this research are to examine the effect of library use patterns such as general visit for book reading and more professional information search, coupled with service quality, on the library users' performance perception on the information system that in turn, affects library use satisfaction on the same information system. More specifically, this study examines whether library visitors perceive differenltly the information system performance according to their library use patterns such that professional library users may have less positive on information system service due to their higher expectation or more positive perception on it due to variety of information uses and positive judgment on advanced information system. Next, three dimensions of service quality, consisting of interaction, outcome, and physical evidence quality in visitors' library use situations, are hypothesized to affect performance perception on library information system. Thirdly, the performance perception on library information system is hypothesized to influence the system use satisfaction while these two constructs are to affect visitors' overall satisfaction. we develop the following research model in accordance with the above theoretical reasoning. All variables used in this study(General Use Patterns, Professional Use Patterns, Interaction Quality, Outcome Quality, Physical Evidence Quality, Information Performance Perception, Information Use Satisfaction, Overall Satisfaction) were defined operationally based on the underlying prior studies. A survey was conducted with prepared questionnaires to about 400 visitors of a specific university library. Among them, 353 proper questionnaires were finally used for the analyses. Two-step approach was used to test the hypotheses. First, confirmatory factor analysis was conducted to guarantee the validity and reliability of variables. The results showed that all variables had not only convergent and discriminant validity, but also reliability. Then, research model was examined with a structural equation using LISREL 8.30 version. The fitness of the research model was found to be within the acceptable level. The findings of this study are as follows. The professional library use pattern was found to affect the users' performance perception on the library information system while the general library use pattern was not. Second, three dimensions of service quality (interaction, outcome, physical evidence) were found to influence the information system performance respectively while none of them was not to information use satisfaction. Third, library users' performance perception on the information system operation was found to affect the information system use satisfaction, both of which also influence users' overall satisfaction of the library. The findings of this study suggest that contemporary libraries strengthen their advanced information system operation in a way of user orientation and more importantly maximize their visitors' utilization of information system, accompanying proper material and various program development. This study conceptualized the new constructs of library users' performance perception on the information system and information use satisfaction which could better explain library users' overall satisfaction. Thus, furture study related with library service could utilize the constructs of information system performance and satisfaction as well as the variety of library use patterns in the users' viewpoints.

Anti-inflammation Effect of Gynura Procumbens extract (명월초 추출물의 항염 효과에 대한 연구)

  • This study conducted the research about the positive effects of Gynura Procumbens on preventing dermatitis and infectious diseases the contemporary people have. To do it, this study measured the concentration of NF-kB, the extract of Gynura Procumbens. In this regard, cytosol, the extract of Gynura Procumbens, and nucleus went through the separation process. The concentration of major NF-kB among various factors to control inflammation was measured with the use of HDF cell. Regarding RAW264.7 cell, the amounts of NO to play an important role in reacting the skin immune system as the media of neural transmission were analyzed. The outcome about the extracts of Gynura Procumbens injected show that it can be expected that as the NF-kB protein and mRNA band were reduced, Gynura Procumbens would have anti-inflammatory effects that could contribute to preventing dermatitis and diseases. In addition, the extracts of Gynura Procumbens have significantly reduced NO with their concentration increasing. In other words, Gynura Procumbens are considered to regulate dependently the production of NO in the concentration of extracts. Thus there is an expectation that the more intensive research would be conducted to heal dermatitis. And it is deemed that Gynura Procumbens would be used as materials for cosmetics as well as foods that the contemporary people can widely consume if a more careful research about anti-inflammatory effects would be sustained on a human bodies' clinical level.

  • This research proposed leader's supervisory behavior as antecedent variables of salesperson's job satisfaction which had been not tested at Brown and Peterson's (1993) empirical study and used organization citizenship as consequences of job satisfaction which was widely tested at the organization related literatures. According to research outcomes, leader behavior influence job satisfaction and organizational citizenship was turned out. to be outcome of salesperson's job satisfaction. But, on the contrary to our expectation, organizational citizenship has nothing to do with salesperson's intention to stay organization. Thus, it could be said that salesperson's intention to stay and organizational citizenship were mutually exclusive outcomes variables of job satisfaction and there is no causal relationship between these two constructs. Also, as it was to be in Brown and Peterson's (1993) empirical study, it was confirmed that leader's supervisory behavior influences commitment and citizenship behavior indirectly through salesperson's job satisfaction. We proposed that sales managers concern about salesperson's job satisfaction and commitment to prevent salespersons from turnover. Especially, commitment to organization is turned out to be very important factor in salesperson management in considering that it influences salesperson's intention to stay and accommodates salesperson's prosocial behavior.

Why do People Play P2E (Play-to-Earn) Games?: Focusing on Outcome Expectation and Social Influence (P2E(Play-to-Earn) 게임 지속이용의도에 대한 연구)

  • With the development of blockchain technology, play-to-earn (P2E) games, one of the decentralized applications (dApps), are receiving great social attention. P2E games are positively evaluated as areas with high growth potential based on blockchain technology, and at the same time, they are negatively evaluated as speculative as people can cash P2E game items in the form of cryptocurrency. In this situation, the purpose of this study is to investigate factors affecting the intention to use P2E games. Along with the discussion of hedonic system adoption, we consider the factors with perceived enjoyment, economic incentive, and social influence. In order to verify our research model, data were collected from 350 adults with P2E game experience or recognition, and a structural equation model was carried out. The analysis results find that perceived enjoyment and subjective norm have a significant positive effect on the intention to use P2E games, and economic incentive does not have a significant effect. In addition, peer influence and external influence have a significant positive effect on subjective norm. Drawing on these findings, we present several academic and practical implications for future research.

Pedagogical Content Knowledge and Predictor Variables in Science Teaching of Practicing Elementary Teachers (교사들의 과학 교과교육학지식과 예측변인)

  • The purpose of study was to investigate practicing elementary teachers' pedagogical content knowledge and the significant predictors of their pedagogical content knowledge in science teaching. The PCK instrument was used to measure elementary teachers' pedagogical content knowledge. It consists of 6 factors to measure teachers' pedagogical content knowledge of 1)instructional methods, 2)representations, 3)contents, 4)evaluations, 5)students, and 6)curriculum. A questionnaire that consists of 7 questions regarding the teachers' degree, their number of years of teaching their choice of teaching science, their personal science teaching efficacy, their science teaching outcome expectation, their science instructional methods, and their attitudes toward teaching science, was also used to identify the information as to significant predictors of teachers' pedagogical content knowledge. A sample of 332 practicing elementary teachers participated in this study. To determine statistically significant predictors, Pearson's correlation coefficient and multiple regression methods were used to analyze the results. The results showed that the significant predictors of practicing elementary teachers' pedagogical content knowledge were their number of years of teaching, their science instructional methods, their personal science teaching efficacy and their attitudes toward teaching science. Further research of how teachers develop and construct their pedagogical content knowledge is recommended especially through the use of varied research methodologies that include qualitative methods.
