  • An inverse radiation analysis is presented for the estimation of the radiation properties for an absorbing, emitting, and scattering media with diffusely emitting and reflecting opaque boundaries. In this study, a repulsive particle swarm optimization(RPSO) algorithm which is a relatively recent heuristic search method is proposed as an effective method for improving the search efficiency for unknown parameters. To verify the performance of the proposed RPSO algorithm, it is compared with a basic particle swarm optimization(PSO) algorithm and a hybrid genetic algorithm(HGA) for the inverse radiation problem with estimating the various radiation properties in a two-dimensional irregular medium when the measured temperatures are given at only four data positions. A finite-volume method is applied to solve the radiative transfer equation of a direct problem to obtain measured temperatures.

  • The convective heat transfer coefficient, emissivity, and flame heat flux on the surface of Duglas fir are estimated by using repulsive particle swarm optimization. The surface temperature, mass loss rate, and ignition time are measured for various incident heat fluxes from a cone heater of the cone calorimeter. The calculated surface temperatures obtained by using the optimized convective heat transfer coefficient, emissivity and flame heat flux on the surface in this study match well with those obtained from the test. The maximum error between the predicted and measured surface temperatures for the three different external heat fluxes is within 2% showing reasonable agreements. The methodology proposed in this study can be used to obtain various values related to heat transfer on a flaming surface that are difficult to measure in experiments.

  • Fire characteristics can be analyzed more realistically by using more accurate properties related to the fire dynamics and one way to acquire these fire properties is to use one of the inverse property estimation techniques. In this study two optimization algorithms which are frequently applied for the inverse heat transfer problems are selected to demonstrate the procedure of obtaining pyrolysis properties of charring material with relatively simple thermal decomposition. Thermal decomposition is occurred at the surface of the charring material heated by receiving the radiative energy from external heat sources and in this process the heat transfer through the charring material is simplified by an unsteady 1-dimensional problem. The basic genetic algorithm(GA) and repulsive particle swarm optimization(RPSO) algorithm are used to find the eight properties of a charring material; thermal conductivity(virgin, char), specific heat(virgin, char), char density, heat of pyrolysis, pre-exponential factor and activation energy by using the surface temperature and mass loss rate history data which are obtained from the calculated experiments. Results show that the RPSO algorithm has better performance in estimating the eight pyrolysis properties than the basic GA for problems considered in this study.

  • This paper proposes a synthesis of new guidance law to generate an evasive maneuver against enemy's missile interception while considering its impact angle, acceleration, and field-of-view constraints. The first component of the synthesis is a new function of repulsive Artificial Potential Field to generate the evasive maneuver as a real-time dynamic obstacle avoidance. The terminal impact angle and terminal acceleration constraints compliance are based on Time-to-Go Polynomial Guidance as the second component. The last component is the Logarithmic Barrier Function to satisfy the field-of-view limitation constraint by compensating the excessive total acceleration command. These three components are synthesized into a new guidance law, which involves three design parameter gains. Parameter study and numerical simulations are delivered to demonstrate the performance of the proposed repulsive function and guidance law. Finally, the guidance law simulations effectively achieve the zero terminal miss distance, while satisfying an evasive maneuver against intercept missile, considering impact angle, acceleration, and field-of-view limitation constraints simultaneously.

  • This paper presents a new method driving multiple robots to their goal position without collision. To consider the movement of the robots in a work area, we adopt the concept of avoidability measure. The avoidability measure figures the degree of how easily a robot can avoid other robots considering the velocity of the robots. To implement the concept to avoid collision among multiple robots, relative distance between the robots is proposed. The relative distance is a virtual distance between robots indicating the threat of collision between the robots. Based on the relative distance, the method calculates repulsive force against a robot from the other robots. Also, attractive force toward the goal position is calculated in terms of the relative distance. These repulsive force and attractive force are added to form the driving force for robot motion. The proposed method is simulated for several cases. The results show that the proposed method steers robots to open space anticipating the approach of other robots. In contrast, since the usual potential field method initiates avoidance motion later than the proposed method, it sometimes fails preventing collision or causes hasty motion to avoid other robots. The proposed method works as a local collision-free motion coordination method in conjunction with higher level of task planning and path planning method for multiple robots to do a collaborative job.

  • In this work, 4-DOF ER haptic master is proposed and integrated with a slave robot for minimally invasive surgery(MIS). Using a controllable ER fluid, the haptic master can generate a repulsive force/torque with the 4-DOF motion. For realization of master-slave robot system, the motion command of the haptic master is realized by slave surgery robot. In order to follow the 4-DOF motion of the haptic master, novel mechanism of slave surgery robot with gimbal joint is devised. Accordingly, the haptic master-slave robot system is established by incorporating the slave robot with the haptic master device in which the desired repulsive force/torque and position are transferred to each other via wireless communications. In order to obtain the desired force/torque and position trajectories, tracking controllers for haptic master and slave robot are designed and implemented, respectively. It has been demonstrated that the desired effective torque tracking control performance is well achieved using the proposed haptic master-slave robot system.

  • Generalized van der Waals equation of state combined with the core-softening theory and temperature dependent repulsive and attractive terms exhibit the anomalous thermal expansion, i.e. density anomaly. Density maxima occur at both positive and negative pressure when the hard-core diameter decreases with increasing temperature, $db_r/dT_r<0$, and at negative pressure when the repulsive force increases with increasing temperature, $da_r/dT_r>0$.

  • At Pt(111), Pt(100), Pt, and Rh interfaces, the Frumkin adsorption isotherm of underpotentially deposited hydrogen (UPD H) and related electrode kinetic data are determined using the standard Gibbs energy of adsorption. The Temkin adsorption isotherm of UPD H correlating with the Frumkin adsorption isotherm of UPD H is readily determined using the correlation constants between the Temkin and Frumkin or Langmuir adsorption isotherms. At the Pt(111), Pt(100), Pt, and Rh interfaces, the lateral repulsive interaction between the UPD H species is interpreted using the interaction parameter for the Frumkin adsorption isotherm. The lateral repulsive interaction between the UPD H species at the Pt(111), Pt(100), Pt, and Rh interfaces is significantly different from the lateral attractive interaction between the overpotentially deposited hydrogen (OPD H) species at Pt, Ir, and Pt-Ir alloy interfaces.
