  • The feasibility of utilizing food waste leachate as an external carbon source was tested to enhance biological nutrient removal from an industrial wastewater with an average flow rate of $164,800m^3/d$ and a low carbon/nitrogen ratio of 2.8. A considerable improvement in the removal of nitrogen and phosphorus was observed when a certain amount of the leachate, ranging from 70 to $142m^3/d$, was supplemented to the biological industrial wastewater treatment process. The addition of the leachate led to an increase in the BOD/N ratio (4.5) and the removal efficiency of nutritents from 29.7% to 71.7% for nitrogen and from 34.8% to 65.6% for phosphorus. However, an excessive dose of the leachate that significantly exceeded $120m^3/d$ caused serious operational problems, like oil-layer formation in the grit chamber and scum layer in the primary clarifier. Thus, an supplement of food waste leachate at a dose acceptable to an existing facilities can be a practical and effective means to enhance the nutrient removal from industrial wastewater and to dispose of the food waste leachate.

  • Biological nutrient removal(BNR) process used in this study, which was packed with EPS(expanded polystylene) media, has more many advantages in aspect of reducing hydraulic retention time(HRT) of the process and having less effect of temperature in the winter season than commercial process in the present. Bench-scale study was performed using domestic wastewater. In the results, it was observed that the T-N removal efficiencies in HRT 6 hr and HRT 4 hr were 55% and 51%, respectively, showing the small reduction (about 4%) of T-N removal efficiency according to shortening of HRT. In comparison of T-N removal characteristic in summer and winter seasons, it showed that T-N removal efficiencies in summer and winter seasons were 65% and 54%, respectively, showing the 11% lower T-N removal efficiency in winter season than in summer season due to deterioration of nitrification in winter season. In the studies of influent loading rate and C/N ratio, the process showed stable effluent quality under the condition of broad influent loading rate and C/N ratio. Therefore, it is anticipated that the developed process in this study could be applicable to small wastewater treatment plant in nutrient removal.

  • SBR process used to evaluate the removal of organics, nitrogen and phosphorus on the basis of a report of research on a precedence at various operation cycle and condition change. Effluent concentration of COD were 50mg/l, 50mg/l, 90mg/l respectively, The removal rates of COD were nearly over 95% at Run 1, 2 and 4. But at Run 3, Effluent concentration of COD was 255.0mg/l, The removal rate of COD was 87% at Run 3. As Oxic/Anoxic rate was fixed and operating cycle of Oxic/Anoxic was changed, the removal rates of T-N were 74.7%, 46.9%, 28.5%, 63.3% respectively at Run 1~4. The case of Run 1 was best result. The removal rates of T-P was appeared in proportion to T-N removal rates and rest of $NO_2-N$. The removal rates of T-P were 51.2%, 35.5%, 41.5%, 51.9% respectively. The removal rates of COD, T-N, T-P were influenced on the change of SBR operation cycle. As organic loading rate was $1.43kgCOD/m^3day$ and C/N ratio was 3.0, operation cycle of Run 1 was best condition of T-N removal rates and T-P removal.

  • This study has examined effects of protease on the removal of hemoglobin and triolein mixed soil with changes of soil content and soil composition from cotton and PET filament fabrics. The results obtained were as follows: The results obtained were as follows: 1) The detergency of PET fabrics was higher than that of cotton fabrics. The removal of hemoglobin was much higher than that of triolein from cotton fabrics, while the removal of hemoglobin was similar to that of triolein from PET fabrics. 2) The removal efficiency of hemoglobin and triolein was improved by protease from cotton and PET fabrics. Especially the removal efficiency of those was remarkably improved from cotton fabrics which the removal of soil was lower than PET fabrics. And the removal of hemoglobin and triolein by adding protease was increased with increase of hemoglobin content of mixed soil from cotton fabrics. 3) With the increase of hemoglobin content of mixed soil, the removal of hemoglobin was drastically increased but the removal of triolein was slightly decreased from cotton and PET fabrics. With the increase of triolein content of mixed soil, the removal of hemoglobin and triolein was decreased from cotton fabrics, but those were generally increased from PET fabrics.

  • Depending on season, mixed wastewater can show great deviations in terms of the influent ratios of tannery and seafood-wastewater. Increases in the ratio of tannery wastewater in influent water also result in increases in the concentration of chromium, which decreases the ratio of BOD/T-N so that the removal efficiency of organic and nitrogen pollutants in biological wastewater treatment deteriorates. No substantial differences occur in the ratios of Eubacteria/total bacteria as the ratio between tannery wastewater and seafood wastewater changes in the influent water. In contrast, the cell numbers and activities of Eubacteria and total bacteria significantly decline with increasing ratios of tannery wastewater in the influent water. Stable removal of organic and nitrogen pollutants by biological wastewater treatments leads to dominance of Proteobacteria groups in all biological treatment basins. In aeration and oxic basins, ${\gamma}$-Proteobacteria account for approximately 21% of the Eubacteria groups, at $1.9{\times}10^9{\sim}2.0{\times}10^9$ cells/mL, while in an anoxic basin, ${\beta}$-Proteobacteria account for approximately 19% of the Eubacteria groups, at $1.3{\times}10^9$ cells/mL. However, a substantial decline in dominance of approximately 11% occurs for ${\gamma}$-Proteobacteria in aeration and oxic basins and about 1% for ${\beta}$-Proteobacteria in an anoxic basin. Mixed wastewater that undergoes extensive property changes of the influent water shows an efficiency of biological treatment that is greatly influenced by the ratio of dominant Proteobacteria groups.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop a new element removal method for ESO (Evolutionary Structural Optimization), which is one of the topology optimization methods. ESO starts with the maximum allowable design space and the optimal topology emerges by a process of removal of lowly stressed elements. The element removal ratio of ESO is fixed throughout topology optimization at 1 or 2%. BESO (bidirectional ESO) starts with either the least number of elements connecting the loads to the supports, or an initial design domain that fits within the maximum allowable domain, and the optimal topology evolves by adding or subtracting elements. But the convergence rate of BESO is also very slow. In this paper, a new element removal method for ESO was developed for improvement of the convergence rate. Then it was applied to the same problems as those in papers published previously. From the results, it was verified that the convergence rate was significantly improved compared with ESO as well as BESO.

  • The use of magnetoresistive (MR) head requires much tighter control of particle contamination in a drive since loose particles on the disk surface will generate thermal asperities (TA). In this study, a spinoff test was performed to investigate the adhesion and removal capability of a particle to disk surface. Numerical simulation was also performed to investigate dominant factor of particle detachment and to support experimental results. It was shown that particles are detached from the disk surface by the moment derived from the centrifugal force and the drag force and that the centrifugal force and capillary force are the dominant force, which determines spin-off of a particle on the disk surface. Removal of particles smaller than several micrometers, which are the main source of TA generation, is extremely difficult since the adhesion forces exceed the centrifugal force. Lubricant types and manufacturing process also influence the particle removal. Lower bonding ratio and lower viscosity of the lubricant will help to increase the removal rate of the particles from the disk surface.

  • Mechanism of rapid mixing effect on chemical phosphorus removal is evaluated in this study. Assuming that chemical phosphorus removal is unaffected by mixing time, only rapid mixing intensity is evaluated. In order to find out the mechanism, it is hypothesized that rapid mixing affects the Al hydrolysis speciation, and that formation of more monomeric species ($Al^a$) results in better removal of phosphorus. According to a ferron assay, more $Al^a$ formed at higher mixing intensity than at lower intensity. Subsequent experiments revealed that better phosphorus removal was obtained at higher intensity than at lower intensity, in terms of the molar ratio of $Al_{added}/P_{removed}$. The proposed hypothesis was proved in this study. Chemical phosphorus removal is affected by rapid mixing intensity due to its effect on the Al hydrolysis speciation.

  • A pilot scale anaerobic fixed-bed with a reactor volume of $2.8m^3$ was built to treat slaughterhouse wastewater. Bamboo rings were chosen as support media mainly because of their cheaper price in underdeveloped countries. Even with their lower porosity and specific surface, the reactor performance showed a maximum 95% COD removal efficiency at an organic loading rate (OLR) of $1kg\;COD/m^3-d$ with its corresponding hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 7.5 d. At a higher OLR of $4.0kg\;COD/m^3-d$, the COD removal efficiency of 75% was achieved with an HRT of 2 d. No big difference in COD removal efficiencies was found between the reactors operated in both upflow and downflow modes. Their operational behavior and effluent characteristics were similar. The effluent COD/TKN ratio of 6.67 at an OLR of $4.0kg\;COD/m^3-d$ was only marginal acceptable range for a subsequent biological denitrification process. Otherwise carbon supplementation is required at a lower OLR.

  • This study was carried out to treat textile wastewater using anaerobic sludge and aerobic fixed-bed biofilm reactor immobilized with Bacillus sp. dominated activated sludge(Bacillus sp. fraction : 81.5%). The range of influent con-centration of SCOD and soluble color were 1032-1507 mg/1, and 1239-1854 degree, respectively. Continuous treatment experiments were performed with variation of textile wastewater ratio at a same HRT. When textile wastewater ratio was 100%(HRT : 24 hours), The removal efficiency of SCOD and soluble color were 88% and 78%, respectively. When compare aerobic reactor of this study that was immobilized with Bacillus sp. dominated activated sludge to other study that was immobilized with activated sludge, SCOD and soluble color removal efficiency of this study showed a little higher efficiency than immobilized with activated sludge. The Bacillus sp. fraction of initial condition was 81.5%), but the fraction after operation was decreased to 31.8%).
