  • This study was performed to develop a new process technology for advanced wastewater treatment using a modified Rotating Activated Bacillus Contactor (RABC) process that adopts anoxic-oxic suspended biomass tanks to enhance nutrients removal. A modified lab-scale RABC process was applied to examine its applicability and to obtain the design factors for the optimum operation of the system. The modified RABC process showed a little more stable and high nutrients removal efficiency than the prototype RABC process: about 70% of nitrogen and 55% of phosphorous removal when the low organic loading (influent COD 200mg/L). However, the processing efficiency of nutrients removal rates was enhanced to great extent when high organic loading: nitrogen 90% and phosphorous 85% (influent COD 500mg/L). High organic loading stimulated extremely good biomass attachment on the reticular carrier RABC stage and the excellent nutrients removal, nevertheless with almost no offensive odor.

  • Bioremediation has been recognized as a suitable alternative to conventional methods of removing contaminants, and it uses fungi, bacteria and microalgae. In contrast to other organisms, microalgae are unique in that they have the ability to perform photosynthesis like plants and to utilize organic/inorganic carbon substrates, in a process called phytoremediation. Microalgae can populate a reaction site rapidly and enhance the bioremediation efficiency. In this study, Chlorella vulgaris was used to evaluate the removal potentials of the nutrients (N and P) and heavy metals (Cu and Zn) from swine wastewater. The optimum growth conditions for Chlorella vulgaris and the removal potentials of N, P, Cu, and Zn from synthetic wastewater using Chlorella vulgaris were investigated. Based on the results, the applicability of this microalga to on-site wastewater treatment was examined. Optimal growth conditions for Chlorella vulgaris were established to be $28^{\circ}C$, a pH of 7, and light and dark cycles of 14:10 h. As the concentrations of the nutrients were increased, the efficiencies of N and P removal efficiencies by Chlorella vulgaris were decreased in the single and binary mixed treatments of the nutrients, respectively. Further, the efficiencies of Cu and Zn removal also decreased as the heavy metals concentrations added were increased, both in the single and binary mixed treatments. In addition, the efficiency of Cu removal was higher than that of Zn removal. Our results indicate that Chlorella vulgaris could be used in treatment plants for the removal of nutrients and heavy metals from swine wastewater.

  • This study was focused on the investigation of the characteristics of TPH and BTEX removal in oil-contaminated sandy soil and fine soil with injection of microorganisms, nutrients, and surfactants. As the result of the experiments maintained moisture contents by 10${\sim}$20%, the TPH removal efficiency in oil-contaminated sandy soil was the highest in C-1 (microorganisms+nutrients), and the efficiency in C-2 (microorganisms+nutrients+surfactants) was higher than the efficiency in C-0(microorganisms). In 81 days, TPH removal efficiency in case of C-0, C-1 and C-2 showed 51%, 83%, 63% respectively. The results of D group with fine soil showed similar trends as C group, but the TPH removal efficiency of D group was lower than that of C group. Those of both C and D group were the highest in 1 group (microganisms+nutrients). The pH of fine soil was some lower than that of sandy soil or was similar to sandy soil. In 14 days, BTEX removal efficiency in case of C-0, C-1, C-2, D-0, D-1 and D-2 showed 99.8%, 99.4%, 96.0%, 99.5%, 99.2%, 96.3% respectively. Those of both C and D group were the highest in 0 group (microganisms).

  • The purpose of thesis was to investigate the removal efficiency of surfactants and commercial detergents by Oenanthe javanica that is one of aquatic plants in Korea. The experiment is concerned with measuring the concentrations of surfactants and commercial detergents in different media: 1) in pure water, 2) in water containing Oenanthe javanica, 3) in water containing Oenanthe javanica and commercial nutrients. The surfactants used in this research include linear alkylbenzene sulfonates (LAS), $\alpha$-sulfo fatty acid methyl esters(MES), and alkylbenzene sulfonates(ABS). Two commercial detergents designated as A and B were in the forms of power and liquid. The results showed that LAS and MES were more effectively removed by Oenanthe javanica probably because these have a chain of linear carbon than on ABS with a branched carbon structure. In the case of commercial detergents, when the except was performed on the basis of surfactants proportion, the removal trends were similar to LAS and MES. The 5-day cultivating test with initial concentration of 0.5-1.0 ppm surfactants showed that less than 10% was removed if no nutrients an Oenanthe javanica were added. When Oenanthe javanica was added into the sample solution containing surfactants, the removal efficiency was increased 100% for the solution containing 0.5-1.0 ppm 60-70% for 5-10 ppm. In addition, chlorisis on Oenanthe javanica was observed due to surfactants and commercial detergents for all three cases. To test the dependence of population density on nutrients, the initial population density was made 300 g/0.4 m$^2$. Throughout the 5-day experiment, the on Oenanthe javanica grew 20-25% with 0.5-1.0 ppm without the synthetic nutrients but by 5% with a high concentrations of 5-10 ppm. The population density was appeared to be independent of synthetic nutrients. The leaves were to be grown with synthetic nutrients, while roots were grown without synthetic nutrients. Based on this research, the fundamental data concerning cultivation and an adequate adjustment of the water condition can provide for the utilization of Oenanthe javanica in real water treatment system.

  • AnnAGNPS model would be applied to simulate the pollutant removal capacity with the buffer strip in the Deachung reservoir watershed. In 2002, 2,270 tons of TN and 221 tons of TP were discharged from the nonpoint source pollutants in this watershed. During the rainy season, from June to September, 66.4% of TN and 71.9% of TP resulted from nonpoint source loads. AnnAGNPS model was also used to simulate the nutrients removal capacity from the buffer strip under the condition that the present landuse would be changed to forest. As the result of simulation, the removal rates of nutrients from the buffer strip of Daecheong reservoir watershed are 406 tons of TN, 39 tons of TP, which means reduction rates are TN 17.9%, TP 17.8%, respectively.

  • Nutrients generated from various land uses lead to eutrophication during the influx of water, and it is necessary to apply the LID techniques to reduce nutrients from nonpoint sources in order to mitigate the occurrence of the algal bloom. This study was carried out to derive the design factors of hybrid artificial wetland (HCW) to increase the removal efficiency of nutrients. HCW system was constructed in the year 2010 for the treatment of rainfall runoffs from parking lots and roads composed of 100% impervious floors in the Cheonan campus of Kongju University. The average nutrients removal efficiency of TN and TP was 74% and 72%, respectively. Both TN and TP removal efficiencies were higher than those of free surface wetlands and subsurface flow wetlands due to activated physical and ecological mechanisms. The critical design parameters for the efficient nutrients removal in the artificial wetlands were the ratio of the surface area to the catchment area (SA/CA), land use, the rainfall runoff, and the rainfall intensity. The optimal carbon to nitrogen (C/N) ratio was estimated at 5: 1 to 10.3: 1. The results of this study can be applied to the efficient design of hybrid artificial wetlands to treat nutrients in urban runoff with high efficiency.

  • Nutrients removal performance of a contact oxidation reactor covered with soil was investigated when basalt rubble was used as a contact medium under various operating conditions. The objective of the experiment was to determine the effectiveness of the system by measuring the removal efficiencies of nutrients from a technical and economical viewpoint. Under the ranges of HRT(20 and 40 hrs) in the experiment, the removal rates of organic matter were as high as 97.5% by showing an effluent $BOD_5$ of less than 10 mg/L. The test of nitrogen removal when the turf was planted on the top soil showed that the average removal rate increased as much as 25% as compared to that without planting. It was suggested that the construction and maintenance cost could be reduced over 20% when the HRT of the system was decreased from 72 to 40 hrs.

  • Twenty nine strains of photosynthetic purple nonsulfur bacteria were isolated from Kyonggi area in Korea. The isolated strains were identified as Rhodopseudomonas blastica, Rhodocyclus gelatinosus, Rhodocyclus tenuis, and Rhodopseudomonas rutila. The enhanced nutrients removal system for wastewater using phototrophic purple non-sulfur bacteria was developed. Experiments were performed into two Phases and the results were compared: the synthetic wastewater was tested for the removal efficiency of nutrients and organics during Phase 1 and the real wastewater during Phase2. Results showed that 97∼99% of organics were removed during Phase 1 and 96∼99% during Phase 2. Nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus) were also removed efficiently: 85∼91% removal of T-N and 78∼92% removal of T-P were achieved for Phase 1, and 76∼89% removal of T-N and 73∼88% removal of T-P for Phase 2.

  • Nutrients in wastewater should be removed prior to release in the receiving waters to prevent the occurrence of eutrophication. In this study, seawater is used to remove ammonia and phosphate by the formation of struvite ($MgNH_{4}PO_{4}{\cdot}6H_{2}O$). It aims to know the optimum conditions for the removal of nutrients using seawater as source of magnesium ions. Experiments were performed using jar tester and pH of ammonium-phosphate solutions were adjusted Samples were drawn at different mixing times. It was shown that simultaneous removal of ammonia and phosphate is rapid, with no significant reduction beyond 10 min of mixing Another important parameter is pH, where range 10-11 showed the optimum nutrient removal. Increase in the volume of seawater, which meant an increase in magnesium ions also lead to better removal.
