  • While the enhanced biological phosphorus removal(EBPR), in anaerobic/aerobic condition, was known to remove phosphorus by means of metabolism of poly-P microorganisms, the phosphorus removed could be released in the form of ortho-P in the aerobic fixed biofilm reactor. This study was initiated to investigate the cause of ortho-P release in the aerobic fixed biofilm reactor. The resutls indicated that the phosphorus release was caused by autooxidation. The synthesis and release of phosphrous were related to the ORP and the boundary value for the phase change was about 170mV. In the synthesis phase, the phosphorus removal rate per COD removed was $0.023mgP_{syn}/mgCOD_{rem}$. The phosprous contents of the microorganism were 4.3 ~ 6.0% on a dry weight basis.

  • 5 bed sand filter, applying biological oxidation, was designed and studied on the treatment of water works. Never using any coagulant agent (drugs), which may cause water pollution in pre-treatment of head water, the auther attempt a high rate filtration by the microorganism (nitrofication bacteria) end plant which populate in multi layer sand beds. The result are as follows : In order to evaluate the oxygen effect on filtration, oxygen was injected in aeration tank attached to each filter tank while filtration, and $NH_3$ was tested as a representaiive ingredient. It was found out that the aeration method was more effective, with over 33% of $NH_3$ removal capacity, than the anerobic and this 5 bed filter showed double removal capacity of $NH_3$ by comparing with conventional sand bed (2 stage bed). According to the examination of two kind of head water, pre-treated with coagulant agent and activated carton, the filtration capacity was affected by the polluted condition of head water, resulting that lower value of pollution and slower velocity of filtration showed more efficiency of $NH_3$ removal. In this experiment $NH_3$ content tested in treated water had a fairly good correlation with others.

  • In this study, the porous glass media was utilized as biomass carrier, and the optimum characteristics of this new media in fixed bed biofilm process were investigated. The characteristics of media considered here are a void volume fraction, a specific surface area, and surface characteristics of media. The effect of surface roughness and material could be clearly demonstrated by the fact that the porous glass media showed a good potential for biofilm development. This might results from the fact that biofilm is initially formed in the surface cavities of the media is protect from the shear effect. Therefore, the microcolonies are not readily detached by the fluid shear. In the steady state, biofilm formation along the packing bed depth was different from media to media. The specific area was also an important factor for the attachment of microorganism on the media surface. The specific area was also an important factor for the attachment of microorganism on the media surface. In the case of porous glass media, about $100m^2/m^3$ was enough to obtain a good organic removal efficiency The organic removal efficiency could be improved by increasing the void volume fraction in the reactor, at least 80% was required to obtain a high removal efficiency and prevent clogging. From the analysis of kinetics study, the yield coefficient, Y, was 0.42 mgMLSS/mgSBOD, endogenous respiration coefficient, ke, was $0.12day^{-1}$ and substrate removel coefficient of Mckinney. km, was $16.8hr^{-1}$ for the porous glass media G-2

  • A fixed biofilm reactor system composed of anaerobic, anoxic(1), anoxic(2), aerobic(1) and aerobic(2) reactor was packed with synthetic activated ceramic (SAC) media and adopted to reduce the inhibition effect of low temperature on nitrification activities. The changes of nitrification activity at different wastewater temperature were investigated through the evaluation of temperature coefficient, volatile attached solid (VAS), specific nitrification rate and alkalinity consumption. Operating temperature was varied from 20 to $5^{\circ}C$. In this biofilm system, the specific nitrification rates of $15^{\circ}C$, $10^{\circ}C$ and $5^{\circ}C$ were 0.972, 0.859 and 0.613 when the specific nitrification rate of $20^{\circ}C$ was assumed to 1.00. Moreover the nitrification activity was also observed at $5^{\circ}C$ which is lower temperature than the critical temperature condition for the microorganism of activated sludge system. The specific amount of volatile attached solid (VAS) on media was maintained the range of 13.6-12.5 mg VAS/g media at $20{\sim}10^{\circ}C$. As the temperature was downed to $5^{\circ}C$, VAS was rapidly decreased to 10.9 mg VAS/g media and effluent suspended solids was increased from 3.2 mg/L to 12.0 mg/L due to the detachment of microorganism from SAC media. And alkalinity consumption was lower than theoretical value with 5.23 mg as $CaCO_3$/mg ${NH_4}^+$-N removal at $20^{\circ}C$. Temperature coefficient (${\Theta}$) of nitrification rate ($20^{\circ}C{\sim}5^{\circ}C$) was 1.033. Therefore, this fixed film nitrogen removal process showed superior stability for low temperature condition than conventional suspended growth process.

  • In this study, validity of wastewater treatment system with advanced treatment processes was evaluated by studying its operational conditions by applying the advanced treatment to the wastewater treatment system which was operating for last several years. Study indicated a fair result for the removal efficiencies of BOD, T-P, and T-N for each unit operation. BOD removal efficiencies for primary clarifier, bioreactor, final effluent are 35, 87, and 48 % respectively. T-P(T-N) removal efficiencies for primary clarifier, bioreactor, final effluent are 18(23), 40(38), and 25(25) % respectively. Further investigation of bioreactor showed that various microorganism such as bacteria, protozoa, and metazoa is present in the bioreactor, and the main function of the media, adhesion (adsorption) of microorganism onto the media, is stabilized. Final effluent quality was lower than the regulation, and BOD, COD, SS, T-N, T-P were 5.5, 9.9, 4.6, 11.8, 0.99 mg/L respectively.

  • The purpose of this study is to reprocess Waste-LCD(Liquid Crystal Display), to widely increase specific surface-area by foaming agent in the process of reprocessing and to use as a substrate of water treatment which is increased the ability of biological treatment, as well as to control non-point source pollutants produced by surface run off during rainfall with using this substrate, and to improve water quality of public watershed as developing substrate for water treatment to be able to purify second treated water which is exhausted at the wastewater treatment plant. The average removal efficiency of Waste-LCD that using the foaming technology was SS 71.2%, BOD 55.7%, COD 58.4%, T-N 29.5% and T-P was 50.3%. Almost Media, early stage showed low removal efficiency of SS and BOD. However, it became high when the microorganism adhered the Media. The variation of SS removal efficiency was high by inflow concentration of SS. The reason for the Media 4 showed high SS removal efficiency is that it has wide specific surface-area, and also it has a pore. All in all, it shows floating matter treatment ability not only inside but it also works outside of the substrate.

  • This study was performed to investigate the reaction characteristics of piggery wastewater for biological nutrient removal. The reaction characteristics were discussed the fraction of organics, the behavior of nitrogen, nitrification, denitrification, and the behavior of phosphorus. The fraction of readily biodegradable soluble COD was 11-12 percent. The ammonia nitrogen was removed via stripping, nitrification, autotrophic cell synthesis, and heterotrophic cell synthesis. The removal percents by each step were 12.1%, 68.9%, 15.0%, and 4.0%, respectively. Nitrification inhibition of piggery wastewater was found to occur at an influent volumetric loading rate over 0.2 NH$_{3}$-N kg/m$^{3}$/d. Denitrification rates were the highest in the raw wastewater and the lowest in the anaerobic effluent. The denitritation of piggery wastewater came out to be possible, and the rate of organic carbon consumption decreased about 10 percent. The phosphorus removed was released in the form of ortho-p in the aerobic fixed biofilm reactor, it was caused by autooxidation. The synthesis and release of phosphorus were related to the ORP and the boundary value for the phase change was about 170mV. In the synthesis phase, the phosphorus removal rate per COD removed was 0.023mgP$_{syn}$/mgCOD$_{rem}$. The phosphorus contents of the microorganism were 4.3-6.0% on a dry weight basis.

  • In this research, characteristics of nitrification and denitrification using the microorganism attached on sponge and plates were examined. The denitrification and nitrification performance were investigated under the anaerobic and aerobic condition for about 2 months. Because the basins of denitrification and nitrification were connected in series, wastewater was flowed from denitrification basin to nitrification one. The 90% of influent flowrate was returned from nitrification basin to denitrification one. Most of organic material was removed in nitrification basin, wherease the only exact amount of organics required in denitrification process was removed in denitrification one. This experiment resulted in that heterotrophic bacteria existing in aerobic basin governed the removal efficiency of organic compounds. In case the influent BOD concentration into nitrification basin was 80mg/l, it did not affect to accumulation of nitrifying bacteria, the balance of heterotrophic bacteria was proved to be an important factor in nitrification/denitrification method such as anaerobic and aerobic cycling type.

  • Combined sewer overflow (CSOs) is a primary diffuse source degrading water quality of urban streams. In this study, CSOs caused by 5 different rainfall events at an urban watershed located in Daejeon city were monitored for the indicator microorganism concentrations. Event mean concentration (EMC) of the indicator microorganisms were: total coliform = $2.46{\times}10^6CFU/100mL$; fecal coliform = $1.01{\times}10^6CFU/100mL$; E.coli = $5.20{\times}10^5CFU/100mL$; and Fecal Streptococci = $6.08{\times}10^5CFU/100mL$. In addition, coliform concentrations were well correlated with suspended solid concentrations and the first flush effects were identified. Settling tests were carried out to estimate removal rate of indicator organisms by sedimentation from CSOs. As microorganisms are discharged in association with suspended solid, ten minutes of settlement can lower 44% of indicator microorganism leading.
