This study investigated possibility of the nitrification and denitrification in one counter-current column with the growth of biofilm attached to its media. This experiment was performed through use of the lab scale reactor composed of the column and settler. The column used was packed with the small size of plastic rings called PALL($1.5{\times}1.5{\;}cm$) with a cylindrical shape. Synthetic wastewater was used in the experiment. The loading rates of carbon (C) and total nitrogen (TN) furnished to the reactor were 0.23 to 1.0 kg COD/m3.d and 0.023 to 1.0 kg N/m3.d, respectively. Major factors controlling the removal efficiencies of COD and TN were the different air flux and volumetric loading rates of COD and TN. The experimental results obtained from this study demonstrated that the removal efficiencies of COD ranged from 90 to 95% and those of TN were from 80 to 83% under the N loading rate of 0.035 and $0.058{\;}kg{\;}N/m^3{\cdot}d$, respectively. The patterns of TN removed were distinctively different on the limit of 50cm of column in depth. This indicated that the nitrification and denitrification occurred near the surface zone of and inside the biofilm respectively, upto the 50cm of the column in depth.
A laboratory experiments were performed to investigate the effects of several factors on the phosphorus removal by waste oyster shells. The waste oyster shells used in this experiments were crushed particle, calcined particle and extracted solution. A higher efficiencies of phosphorus removal were observed, when a particle size of crushed and calcined particle were smaller. The effluent concentration of phosphorus was around 1.6mg/ι in continuous column experiment which packed with crushed particle of waste oyster shell at the influent concentration of PO4-P of 10 mg/ι. But the clogging of column occurred with increasing of throughput volume of influent. The efficiency of phosphorus removal increased with increasing of dosage amount of crushed, calcined particle and extracted solution. When the calcined particle which contained only about 1/10~1/100 of crushed particle was used, the efficiency of phosphorus removal was correspondingly equivalent to the removal efficiency obtained from crushed particle. The efficiency of phosphorus removal by calcined particle after 9 runs repeated use was decreased about 21.5% as that of the first run. The removal efficiency of 100% could have been achieved at the HRT of 18 hours during the continuous treatment of phosphorus by the solution extracted from calcined particle.

Development of hematite-coated sand was evaluated for the application of the PRB (permeable reactive barrier) in the arsenic-contaminated subsurface of the metal mining areas. The removal efficiency of As(III) and As(V), the effect of anion competition and the capability of arsenic removal in the flow system were investigated through the experiments of adsorption isotherm, arsenic removal kinetics against anion competition and column removal. Hematite-coated sand followed a linear adsorption isotherm with high adsorption capacity at low level concentrations of arsenic (< 1.0 mg/l). When As(III) and As(V) underwent adsorption reactions in the presence of anions (sulfate, nitrate and bicarbonate), sulfate caused strong inhibition of arsenic removal, and bicarbonate and nitrate caused weak inhibition due to specific and nonspecific adsorption onto hematite, respectively. In the column experiments, high content of hematite-coated sand enhance the arsenic removal, but the amount of the arsenic removal decreased due to the higher affinity of As(V) than As(III) and reduced adsorption kinetics in the flow system, Therefore, the amount of hematite-coated sand, the adsorption affinity of arsenic species and removal kinetics determined the removal efficiency of arsenic in the flow system. arsenic, hematite-coated sand, permeable reactive barrier, anion competition, adsorption.

Because of their simplicity, efficiency, and economy, slow sand filters are appropriate means of water treatment for small water systems. In this study, the effect of filtration velocity and dirty skin (Schmutzdecke) was evaluated on the performance of turbidity removal. Also, removal characteristics of particulate were investigated in the case of the usage of non-woven fabric on the surface of sand and the application of PCF as pretreatment process. Comparative column tests were carried out for the various operation condition. From the result of column tests, filtration velocity had little effect on the turbidity removal rate. The formation of algal biofilm on the surface of media is helpful in turbidity removal, while non-woven fabric is not as effective as expected. The relative contribution of biomass and accumulated particulates to head loss development in slow sand filters requires further study.
Municipal landfill leachate, a major source of soil contamination and ground water pollution, causes serious environmental problems. To investigate the removal efficiency of pollutants in the leachate by sand, briquet ash, fly ash, and activated carbon columns, COD and some pollutants in the leachate passed through each column for 8 weeks were examined. Average COD removal efficiency for 8 weeks was 83%, 45%, and 43% by activated carbon, briquet ash and fly ash columns, respectively. COD was not effectively reduced by sand column. Average ${NH_4}\;^+$ removal efficiency for 8 weeks was more than 60% by ail columns. Hardness was effectively removed for 8 weeks by fly ash and activated carbon columns. Anoins including $PO_4\;^{3-}$, $CI^-$ and $SO_4^{2-}$ were not removed by all columns.
Soluble manganese removal was analyzed as a function of filter media, filter depth, presence or absence of chlorination, and surface manganese oxide concentration in water treatment processes. Sand, manganese oxide coated sand (MOCS), sand+MOCS, and granular activated carbon(GAC) were used as filter media. Manganese removal, surface manganese oxide concentration, turbidity removal, and regeneration of MOCS in various filter media were investigated. Results indicated that soluble manganese removal in MOCS was rapid and efficient, and most of the removal happened at the top of the filter. When filter influent (residual chlorine 1.0mg/L) with an average manganese concentration of 0.204mg/L was fed through a filter column, the sand+MOCS and MOCS columns can remove 98.9% and 99.2% of manganese respectively on an annual basis. On the other hand, manganese removal in sand and the GAC column was minimal during the initial stage of filtration, but after 8 months of filter run they removed 99% and 35% of manganese, respectively. Sand turned into MOCS after a certain period of filtration, while GAC did not. In MOCS, the manganese adsorption rate on the filter media was inversely proportional to the filter depth, while the density of media was proportional to the filter depth.
One of the most important issues in structural systems is evaluation of the margin of safety in low and mid-rise buildings against the progressive collapse mechanism due to the earthquake loads. In this paper, modeling of collapse propagation in structural elements of RC frame buildings is evaluated by tracing down the collapse points in beam and column structural elements, one after another, under earthquake loads and the influence of column removal is investigated on how the collapse expansion in beam and column structural members. For this reason, progressive collapse phenomenon is studied in 3-story and 5-story intermediate moment resisting frame buildings due to the corner and edge column removal in presence of the earthquake loads. In this way, distribution and propagation of the collapse in progressive collapse mechanism is studied, from the first element of the structure to the collapse of a large part of the building with investigating and comparing the results of nonlinear time history analyses (NLTHA) in presence of two-component accelograms proposed by FEMA_P695. Evaluation of the results, including the statistical survey of the number and sequence of the collapsed points in process of the collapse distribution in structural system, show that the progressive collapse distribution are special and similar in low-rise and mid-rise RC buildings due to the simultaneous effects of the column removal and the earthquake loads and various patterns of the progressive collapse distribution are proposed and presented to predict the collapse propagation in structural elements of similar buildings. So, the results of collapse distribution patterns and comparing the values of collapse can be utilized to provide practical methods in codes and guidelines to enhance the structural resistance against the progressive collapse mechanism and eventually, the value of damage can be controlled and minimized in similar buildings.

Reductive degradation of hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine (RDX) by nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) was investigated to evaluate the feasibility of using it for in-situ groundwater remediation. Batch experiments were conducted to quantify the kinetics and efficiency of RDX removal by nZVI, and to determine the effects of pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), and ionic strength on this process. Experimental results showed that the reduction of RDX by nZVI followed pseudo-first order kinetics with the observed rate constant (kobs) in the range of 0.0056-0.0192 min−1. Column tests were conducted to quantify the removal of RDX by nZVI under real groundwater conditions and evaluate the potential efficacy of nZVI for this purpose in real conditions. In column experiment, RDX removal capacity of nZVI was determined to be 82,500 mg/kg nZVI. pH, oxidation-reduction potential (ORP), and DO concentration varied significantly during the column experiments; the occurrence of these changes suggests that monitoring these quantities may be useful in evaluation of the reactivity of nZVI, because the most critical mechanisms for RDX removal are based on the chemical reduction reactions. These results revealed that nZVI can significantly degrade RDX and that use of nZVI could be an effective method for in-situ remediation of RDX-contaminated groundwater.

Column experiments were performed in this study to investigate humic acid adhesion to iron oxide-coated sand (ICS) under different experimental conditions including influent humic acid concentration, flow rate, solution pH, and ionic strength/composition. Breakthrough curves of humic acid were obtained by monitoring effluents, and then column capacity for humic acid adsorption ($C_cap$), total adsorption percent (R), and mass of humic acid adsorbed per unit mass of filter media ($q_a$) were quantified from these curves. Results showed that humic acid adhesion was about seven times higher in ICS than in quartz sand at given experimental conditions. This indicates that humic acid removal can be enhanced through the surface charge modification of quartz sand with iron oxide coating. The adhesion of humic acid in ICS was influenced by influent humic acid concentration. $C_cap$ and $q_a$ increased while R decreased with increasing influent humic acid concentration in ICS column. However, the influence of flow rate was not eminent in our experimental conditions. The humic acid adhesion was enhanced with increasing salt concentration of solution. $C_cap$, $q_a$ and R increased in ICS column with increasing salt concentration. On the adhesion of humic acid, the impact of CaCl2 was greater than that of NaCl. Also, the humic acid adhesion to ICS decreased with increasing solution pH. $C_cap$, $q_a$ and R decreased with increasing solution pH. This study demonstrates that humic acid concentration, salt concentration/composition, and solution pH should be controlled carefully in order to improve the ICS column performance for humic acid removal from water.
