  • Vegetation maps present an inventory of existing plant communities, their location, extent and geographical distribution in the area concerned. For green space management and environment assessment accurate vegetation maps can be used effectively for analyzing the relationships between vegetation and the physical environment. However, the Current Vegetation Map, Forest Stand Map, and Green Naturality Map in Korea do not represent the status of vegetation community exactly. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to produce a detailed vegetation map at urban neighborhood parks in Korea by collecting the exact current vegetation data from field survey, and remote sensing(RS) and storing these data in geographical information systems(GIS). Ultimately it is intended to be used in planning and managing the urban green space. The study area is 66.1ha and it is classified into total 19 communities together with parks, orchards, bare land, grassland, tombs and gardens, etc. There is 53.7ha(81.2%) difference between the detailed vegetation map and the current vegetation map. There is also 46.9ha(70.8%) difference between the detailed vegetation map and forest stand map. After this study, it was concluded that it needs producing the detailed vegetation map used in managing urban green spaces because the existing vegetation map does not represent the status of vegetation in the study site.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the geomorphological environment changes of tidal flat in the Cheonsu Bay. Especially, it centers on the changes in the sedimentary environment using remote sensing data. Multi-temporal Landsat data and topographic maps were used in this study. The results are summarized as follows: the tidal flat of Cheonsu Bay changes in many ways depending on the direction of the tidal current. In the neighborhood of Ganwoldo, the scale of the tidal flat has continuously been expanded due to the superiority of sedimentation after a tide embankment was built. When we analyzed the grain size of sediments and implemented in-situ field survey, it was found that the innermost part of the bay consists of a mud flat, with the midway part mixed flat, and the nearest part to the sea sand flat. On the other hand, in the neighborhood of Seomot isle and its beach, sedimentation is superior in the eastern part whereas erosion is superior in the western part. In other words, the western coast of the beach is contacted with the open seas and under much influence of ocean wave. The eastern coast is placed at the entrance of the bay and has sand bar and tidal flat developed due to submarine deposits that are accumulated on the sea floor by the tidal current. In conclusions, remote sensing methods can be effectively applied for quantitative analysis of geomorphological changes in tidal flat, and it is expected that the proposed schemes can be applied to another geomorphological environments such as beach, sand dune, and sand wave.

  • A method for identifying the released region and time of Asian dust using the long-range inverse transport model that traces the wind field in the backward direction from positions where Asian dust was observed is described. Initial conditions for the inverse transport simulation were obtained from the time variation of the density distribution of the suspended particulate matter (SPM) in the air measured at various places in Japan. Based on a concentration of trajectories of the air mass computed by the inverse transport model, the source region of Asian dust clouds observed at meteorological stations in Japan on March 17 to 18, 2002 was estimated. As a result, it was found that dust particles were released at about 6h on March 15 in the neighborhood of Inner Mongolian Autonomous Region.

  • In this paper, we propose an efficient image segmentation technique for large-sized monochrome images using a hybrid approach which combines threshold and region-based techniques. First, an image is partitioned into fixed-size blocks and for each block the representative intensity is determined by averaging pixel intensities within the block. Next, the neighborhood blocks that have similar characteristics with respect to a specific threshold are merged in order to form candidate regions. Finally, those candidate regions are refined to get final target object regions by merging regions considering the spatial locality and certain criteria. We have performed experiments on images selected from various domains and showed that our technique was able to extract target object regions appropriately from most images.

  • This study empirically analyzes the effect of the spread of COVID-19 and the implementation of social distancing on the number of park users. To this end, we analyzed the time series data on the number of users and the COVID-19 outbreak at Olympic Park, a large-scale comprehensive urban park located in Songpa-gu, Seoul, and four neighborhood parks in the same municipality. And this was compared with the effect on the change in the number of users around Jamsil Lotte World, a representative indoor complex leisure space in Seoul. The analysis results are as follows: First, in small neighborhood parks located in residential areas, the number of users increased by 3 to 6% on average due to the implementation of the social distancing measures and the increase in the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases. In particular, it was found that changes in park use were sensitive to the increase in the intensity of social distancing. On the other hand, the number of users around Jamsil Lotte World decreased by 38% on average, and in the case of Olympic Park, the number of users decreased by 1.9% on average due to the spread of COVID-19. Considering that the number of the vehicle users representing remote users of Olympic Park has decreased by 23% on average, it is estimated that there is little change in the number of users in the surrounding areas. This suggests that urban parks, especially neighborhood parks in residential areas, play a role as a major refuge and leisure space for urban people in the event of a pandemic disaster such as COVID-19, and therefore need to be properly supplied and maintained.

  • Nowadays, urbanized area expands its boundary, and distribution of urbanized area is gradually transformed into more complicated pattern. In Korea, SMA(Seoul Metropolitan Area) has outstanding urbanized area since 1950s. But it is ambiguous whether urban distribution is clustered or dispersed. This study aims to show the way in which expansion of urbanized area impacts on spatial distribution pattern of urbanized area. We use quadrat analysis, nearest-neighbor analysis and fractal analysis to know distribution pattern of urbanized area in time-series urban growth. The quadrat analysis indicates that distribution pattern of urbanized area is clustered but the cohesion is gradually weakened. And the nearest-neighbor analysis shows that point patterns are changed that urbanized area distribution pattern is progressively changed from clustered pattern into dispersed pattern. The fractal dimension analysis shows that 1972's distribution dimension is 1.428 and 2000's dimension is 1.777. Therefore, as time goes by, the complexity of urbanized area is more increased through the years. As a result, we can show that the cohesion of the urbanized area is weakened and complicated.

  • The purpose of this study is to provide the basic data for the leisure space planning desirable for adolescents through survey on their using leisure space. Four hundred sixty-six middle and high school students living in Chongju city, Gwesan-gun and Eumsung-gun responded the first basic questionnaire and 160 students among them answered again the second questionnaire for more information on the site of leisure space they want. Frequency, percentage, $x^2-test$ and Multi-Dimensional Scale were methods of analysis. The results are as follows. Adolescents are wasting their leisure time because of insufficient facilities for productive activities. They use the time, when observed in one week, roaming around downtown, studying in off-school academies, visiting shops and playing in the game rooms. And when observed in a month, they use time meeting friends in coffee shops, visiting restaurants, studying in the libraries, playing in the ground and visiting sports facilities. Adolescents' leisure time were different according to sex, age, father's educational level, mother's occupation, household income, and living area. Students hoped the leisure spares to be located in the neighborhood where they can access easily, and facilities they wanted were small shop-buildings, game rooms, off-school academies, schools, sports facilities, studying moms and libraries. It is necessary that adolescents have opportunities to learn how to use their leisure time healthy in the leisure space. And consideration on adolescents living in the remote rural area have to be dealt importantly in the beginning of various planning.

  • Among the various remote sensing sensors compared to the electro-optical sensors, SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) is very suitable for assessing damaged areas induced by disaster events owing to its all-weather day and night acquisition capability and sensitivity to geometric variables. The conventional CD (Change Detection) method that uses two-date data is typically used for mapping damage over extensive areas in a short time, but because data from only two dates are used, the information used in the conventional CD is limited. In this paper, we propose a novel CD method that is extended to use data consisting of two pre-disaster SAR data and one post-disaster SAR data. The proposed CD method detects changes by using a similarity weight image derived from the neighborhood information of a pixel in the data from the three dates. We conducted an experiment using three single polarization ALOS PALSAR (Advanced Land Observing Satellite/Phased Array Type L-Band) data collected over Miyagi, Japan which was seriously damaged by the 2011 east Japan tsunami. The results demonstrated that the mapping accuracy for damaged areas can be improved by about 26% with an increase of the g-mean compared to the conventional CD method. These improved results prove the performance of our proposed CD method and show that the proposed CD method is more suitable than the conventional CD method for detecting damaged areas induced by disaster.

  • Satellite image is very usefully practiced to predict and analyze physical expansion and change of city. Physical expansion and change of city is closely related to the use of land, and continuous growth management focused on the use of land is essential for sustainable city growth. In this research, the change of land cover and land-use were analyzed with basic input data from 1985 to 2000 according to artificial satellite. Moreover, the land-use turnover rate was understood and expansion trend of urban sprawl in Busan metropolitan city and land-use characteristics of the expansion area. The results are, first, the area for urban region was expanded continuously but areas for agriculture area, forest area, and water area had different changes due to administrative district reform of Busan by each year. Second, the urbanization area in Busan was increased by 3.8% from $92.5km^2$ in 1985 to $167.5km^2$ in 2000. Third, the result of analysis on land-use turnover rate showed that agriculture area was turned into urbanized area the most, and forest area was followed by. Fourth, the result of analysis on database and overlay of buildings in Busan established in 2001 showed that agriculture area are had type 1 and 2 neighborhood living facilities (45.63%), apartment house in forest area (18.49%), and factory in water area (31.84%) with high ratio.
