Selection of Young Dairy Bulls for Future Use in Artificial Insemination

  • Relationships of breeding values of sires for first lactation milk yield with pedigree information or indices were examined to identify the optimal criteria of selecting young dairy bulls for future use in artificial insemination (AI). Records of performance data on 1087 crossbred daughters (Holstein - Friesian, Jersey and Brown Swiss with Hariana) of 147 sires, generated at Livestock Production Research (Cattle and Buffaloes) Farm, IVRI, Izatnagar, U.P., during 1972 - 1995 were used to obtain the estimates of sire's breeding values (EBV) using the Best Linear Unbiased Prediction Procedures. The correlations between young bull's EBV and the dam's first lactation milk yield was non-significantly different from zero. However, the young bull's EBV was negatively and significantly related (r = - 0.275 ; P < 0.05) to the dam's best lactation milk yield, suggesting that the selection of young dairy bulls from high yielding elite dams is not a suitable criteria for genetic improvement. The correlations of sire's and paternal grandsire's EBV's with young bull's EBV were high and positive (0.532, 0.844; P < 0.01). The maternal grandsire's EBV was positively but non-significantly related to grandson's EBV. The pedigree index incorporating dam's milk records and sire's EBV's showed a negative and non-significant correlation with young bull's EBV. However, the correlation of a pedigree index $(I_3)$ combining information on sire's and paternal grand-sire's EBV's with young bull's EBV's was considerably high and positive (0.797; P < 0.01). The regression coefficients of young bull's EBV on pedigree index $I_3$, was higher than those on other pedigree information. These results revealed that there was no advantage in basing selection on dam's performance or maternal grand-sire's EBV and that sire's and paternal grandsire's EBV's were reliable pedigree information for selection of young dairy bulls for future use in AI.

다목적실용위성 3호의 지표 정규식생지수 산출 및 비교 분석: GeoEye 자료 활용 (The comparative analysis of KOMPSAT-3 based surface normalized difference vegetation index: Application of GeoEye data)

  • 본 연구에서는 다목적실용위성 3호 영상을 이용하여 지표면 상의 정규식생지수 비교 분석 하고자 한다. 산출된 다목적실용위성 3호의 정규식생지수 비교 분석을 위해 동일 지점 최소 관측 시간 오차를 가지는 고해상도 GeoEye 영상이 사용되었다. 먼저, 각 밴드별 분광 정도 산출을 위해 대기 보정이 수행되었다. 대기 보정 수행을 위한 기하 정보는 다목적실용위성 3호 보조자료에 포함된 태양천정각, 태양방위각, 위성천정각, 위성방위각, 날짜 정보이다. 그리고 대기 요소에 의한 감쇄, 산란, 흡수 정보를 물리적으로 계산하기 위해 수증기량, 오존량, 에어러솔 정보가 적용되었다. 일반적으로 정확한 대기정보를 얻기 위해서는 현장관측자료가 중요하지만, 본 연구에서는 MODIS atmospheric products를 사용하였고, 대기보정 모델에서 산출된 지면 반사도는 식생지수 산출에 사용되었다.

Analysis of trends on patents for unmanned technology used in agriculture

  • This study analyzed the trends of patents for unmanned technology used in agriculture. The target countries for this survey of patent data were Korea, the USA and Japan as well as the countries in Europe. The indices used in this study to analyze the patents were the CPP (Cites Per Patent), PII (Patent Impact Index), and PFS (Patent Family Size). The total effective patents for unmanned technology used in agriculture were 1,080 cases. The number of patents in the USA, Japan, Europe, and Korea were 541, 326, 128 and 85 cases, respectively. Among the total effective patents, the evaluation scores for selected important patents were calculated by applying commonly used weights to each index, and the top 10 patents were selected as important patents. The results showed that all the top ten patents are owned by the United States and that the United States is an advanced country in the field of unmanned technology used in agriculture. The evaluation score of the important patents using the existing method was biased toward the PII index among the three patent evaluation standards, and the effects of the number of claims and the PFS were relatively small. Therefore, a reliable patent analysis in the field of unmanned technology used in agriculture needs to reflect the overall evaluation factors taking into consideration the scope of the evaluation factors.

Reliability of the Foot Posture Index (FPI-6) for Assessment of Stroke Patients

  • Purpose: This study attempted to determine intra-rater reliability and inter-rater reliability for measurement of foot form using the FPI-6 (Foot Posture Index) in patients with hemiplegia caused by stroke. Methods: Twenty two stroke patients were recruited into the research and their foot posture was evaluated using the FPI. Two raters assessed 6 items sequentially in accordance with the FPI-6 manual. This procedure involved asking the subject to take several steps in-place, prior to settling into a comfortable stance position with double limb support. Subjects were instructed to stand still with their arms by their sides and look straight ahead. FPI-6 values ranged from -2 to +2 for each of the six criteria and from -12 to +12 for the total score, indicating a position for each foot either along the supinated (negative score) to pronated (more than +6) continuum of foot posture. Results: The results showed that intra-rater reliability and inter-rater reliability for a total FPI-6 score was high: 0.807-0.888. An almost perfect agreement between the two raters was identified in the foot's morphological classification (Somer's D=0.712; p<0.05). Intra-percentage agreement was high (88.6%). Conclusion: The FPI-6 is a quick, simple, and reliable clinical tool with demonstrated good to excellent intra-rater reliability and good inter-rater reliability when used in assessment of the stroke patient's foot.

인터넷중독 측정도구와 한국형 인터넷중독지표의 개발 (Development of Internet Addiction Measurement Scales and Korean Internet Addiction Index)

  • Objectives : To develop measurement scales of Internet addiction, and propose a Korean Internet Addiction Index (K-IAI) and classification criteria for Internet addiction from the threshold scores developed. Methods : The identification of the concept of 'Internet addiction' was based on the literature review. To select the scales, an exploratory factor analysis was applied. A construct validation was tested by a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) with a structured equation model (SEM). In testing the validity of the classification criteria, ANOVA and non-recursive models with SEM were applied. Results : Out of 1,080 questionnaires distributed, 1,037 were returned,; a response rate of 96%. The Cronbach-$\alpha$ of all items was over 0.75. Using an exploratory factor analysis in the condition of a 6 factor constrain as the study model proposed, 23 of the initial 28 items were identified. In testing the discriminant and convergent validity of the selected 23 scales using CFA with SEM, the Internet addiction model explained about 93% of all variances of the data collected, and all the latent variables significantly explained the designated scales. A K-IAI was proposed using the T-scores of the sum of all factor averages. In the classification of users, the basic concept was a twostandard deviation approach of the K-IAI as the criteria of MMPI. The addiction group had a score ${\geq}70$ in the K-IAI, the pre-addiction group between ${\geq}50$ and <70, and the average user group <50. The Internet use times of the classified groups were statistically different in the ANOVA and multiple comparisons. Conclusions : The K-IAI is a reliable and valid instrument for measuring Internet addiction. Moreover, the taxonomy of the groups was also verified using various methods.

Exploring the Formation of Galaxies through Metallicities of Globular Clusters

  • Globular clusters (GCs) are among the oldest stellar objects in the universe and provide valuable constraints on many aspects of galaxy evolution. GC systems typically exhibit bimodal color distributions the phenomenon of which has been a major topic in the area of GC research. GC color bimodality established a paradigm where scenarios to explain its origin require two GC groups with different formation origins. The GC division, asserted mainly by photometric color bimodality so far, has been viewed as the presence of two distinct metallicity subgroups within individual galaxies. In this study, we make use of spectroscopy of GC systems associated with two giant galaxies, M31 (the Andromeda) and M87 (NGC 4486), to investigate the GC bimodality and the underlying metallicity distributions. Recent spectroscopy on the globular cluster (GC) system of M31 with unprecedented precision witnessed a clear bimodality in absorption-line index distributions of old GCs. Given that spectroscopy is a more detailed probe into stellar population than photometry; the discovery of index bimodality may point to the very existence of dual GC populations. However, here we show that the observed spectroscopic dichotomy of M31 GCs emerges due to the nonlinear nature of metallicity-to-index conversion and thus one does not necessarily have to invoke two separate GC subsystems. We present spectra of 130 old globular clusters (GCs) associated with the Virgo giant elliptical galaxy M87, obtained using the Multi-Object Spectrography (MOS) mode of Faint Object Camera and Spectrograph (FOCAS) on the Subaru telescope. M87 GCs with reliable metallicity measurements exhibit significant inflection along the color-metallicity relations, through which observed color bimodality is reproduced from a broad, unimodal metallicity distribution. Our findings lend further support to this new interpretation of the GC color bimodality, which could change much of the current thought on the formation of GC systems and their host galaxies.

각 국별 수출물량지수의 비교 분석 : 한국, 캐나다, 브라질, 영국, 호주를 중심으로 (Comparative Analysis of Export Volume Index by Country : Focusing on Korea, Canada, Brazil, UK, Australia)

  • 본 연구의 목적은 각 대륙을 대표하는 한국, 캐나다, 브라질, 영국, 호주의 수출물량지수를 활용하여 한국과의 동행성과 변동성을 파악하는데 있다. 분석기간은 1990년부터 2017년까지 총 28년간 연간자료를 사용하여 지표분석과 수치분석, 모형분석 등을 수행하였다. 상관분석에서 한국은 캐나다, 영국, 브라질 순으로 높은 상관 관계를 보였으나 호주와는 거의 무관한 관계로 나타났다. 회귀분석의 Coefficient에서 브라질, 캐나다, 영국은 종속변수 한국과 양(+)의 방향으로 움직이고 있으나 호주와는 거의 영향을 받지 못하는 것으로 나타났다. 향후 한국의 수출물량을 증가시키기 위해서는 새로운 시장으로 부각되고 있는 호주, 브라질, 인도, 베트남, 싱가포르 등에 대한 지속적인 관심이 필요해 보인다. 본 연구에서는 캐나다, 영국, 브라질, 호주를 연구대상 국가로 선정하였지만 향후 더 다양한 국가를 선정하여 분석한다면 객관적이고 신뢰성 높은 자료가 산출될 것으로 기대한다.

동물에서 Coxiella burnetii 항체를 진단하기 위한 경쟁효소면역법 개발 (Development of competitive enzyme linked immunosorbent assay for detection of Coxiella burnetii antibody in animal)

  • Coxiella burnetii (C burnetii) is the causative agent of Q fever in animal and human. The distribution of the disease has been documented around world. In this study we developed the competitive enzyme linked immunosorbent assay(cELISA) and compared it with indirect immunofluorescent assay(IFA). A monoclonal antibody(Mab) against C burnetii and a peroxidase-conjugated anti-mouse IgM were used as an indicator system competing against antibody in animal serum or as an indicater of the absence of antibody. Sera were considered antibody positive when the percentage inhibition index(PI index) is upper than 30. PI index is calculated as 100-[sample OD/Mab OD)${\times}100$]. Among 162 bovine serum samples, 23 samples were antibody positive both in cELISA and IFA. And 156 samples showed same results. From goat with experimentally induced infection with C burnetii the antibody was detected 20 days early in cELISA compared to IFA. On the basis of present findings, it was demonstrated that cELISA is a reliable diagnostic method for The detection of specific antibodies against C burnetii infection.

Transcranial Doppler를 이용한 연령에 따른 뇌혈관 반응성 평가 (Evaluation of Cerebrovascular Reactivity According to Age Using Transcranial Doppler)

  • Cerebral vasoreactivity is an index of autoregulation of cerebral perfusion, and can be measured using functional images such as Xe CT, SPECT and PET in reponse to hypercapneic stimulus. In order to measure cerebral $CO_2$ vasoreactivity in routine TCD study conveniently and reliably, we devised a method of rebreathing into closed volume of reservoir bag as a hypercapneic stimulus, and applied it to 44 healthy volunteers. As a hypercapneic stimulus, we applied fitting mask connected with closed reservoir bag for about 90 seconds, and mean blood flow velocity(MBFV) and pulsatility index(PI) were evaluated at proximal middle cerebral arteries(MCA) of 50-55 mm depth, before and after the hypercapneic stimulus. Age affected the MFV and PI value showed significant and the MFV was 56.45(SD=9.75)cm/sec, while PI was 0.406(SD=0.089). As age increases the flow velocity decreased significantly whereas PI value increased(P<0.05). The vasoreactvity significantly decreased with age(P<0.05). The decrease of cerebral blood flow quantity and cerebral blood flow velocity is not only because of increase of diameter of cerebrovascular resulting from aging, but the resistance increase of small blood vessel resulting from the increase of PI & RI value is regarded. We suppose that the rebreathing method is a reliable and convenient technique as a hypercapneic stimulus in determining cerebral $CO_2$ vasoreactivity. The rebreathing method could be non-invasive and useful methods in estimation of the cerebrovascular reactivity and could be applied to the basal and follow-up evaluation of the cerebrovascular reserve of the ischemic stroke patients.

Pantographic Reproducibility Index(PRI)를 이용한 하악운동의 재현성에 관한 연구 (A Study on Reproducibility of Mandibular Movements Using Pantographic Reproducibility Index (PRI))

  • In order to determine if a relationship exists between the clinical symptoms of TMJ dysfunction and the reproducibility of mandibular movements, twenty one subjects were chosen. The control group consisted of 5 subjects who were determined to be free from signs and symptoms of dysfunction . The sixteen experimental subjects were selected on the basis of their having dysfunctional symptoms. The author obtained two sets of pantographic tracings. Each set consisted of tracings from three both lateral and one protrusive movements. A second set of tracings were recorded immediately on the new recording papers using the same procedure as the first tracing. The tracings were scored by Pantographic reproducibility index (PRI). The obtained results were as follows. 1. Mean PRI scores of groups increased as the degree of dysfunction were increased. 2. For the groups of no or slight dysfunctional symptoms the PRI scores of the second tracing were smaller than the first one, wherea the scores of the second tracing from $D_2,\;D_3$ group were larger than the first tracing. 3. Differences between the mean PRI scores of control group and those of experimental group were statistically significant. 4. The second sets of tracings were more reliable statistically than those of first ones. 5. PRI can be used as a meaningful aid for the evaluation of the diagnostic and therapeutic results of treatment modalities for the TMJ dysfunction. 6. At 3east two sets of tracings should be recorded when the PRI is to be used to detect the incoordinated movements of TMJ dysfunction patient. 7. PRI scores of control group ($D_0$) was 137.7, thus, mandibular movement was reproducible, whereas PRI scores of experimental groups ($D_1,\;D_2,\;D_3$) were 22.5, 27.7, 30.45 respectively, thus were nonreproducible.
