This paper provides simulation-based results of effect analysis of sample size and sampling periods on accuracy of reliability estimation methods using multiple comparisons with analysis of variance. Sum of squared errors in estimated reliability measures were evaluated through applying seven estimation methods for one-shot systems to simulated quantal-response data. Analysis of variance was implemented to investigate change in these errors according to variations of sample size and sampling periods for each estimation method, and then the effect analysis on accuracy in reliability estimation was performed using multiple comparisons based on sample size and sampling periods. An efficient way to allocate both sample size and sampling periods for reliability estimation tests of one-shot systems is proposed in this paper from the effect analysis results.
This study proposes a system reliability analysis of rack storage facilities subjected to forklift colliding events. The proposed system reliability analysis consists of two steps: the first step is to identify dominant failure modes that most contribute to the failure of the whole rack facilities, and the second step is to evaluate the system failure probability. In the first step, dominant failure modes are identified by using a simulation-based selective searching technique where the contribution of a failure mode to the system failure is roughly estimated based on the distance from the origin in the space of the random variables. In the second step, the multi-scale system reliability method is used to compute the system reliability where the first-order reliability method (FORM) is initially used to evaluate the component failure probability (failure probability of one member), and then the probabilities of the identified failure modes and their statistical dependence are evaluated, which is called as the lower-scale reliability analysis. Since the system failure probability is comprised of the probabilities of the failure modes, a higher-scale reliability analysis is performed again based on the results of the lower-scale analyses, and the system failure probability is finally evaluated. The illustrative example demonstrates the results of the system reliability analysis of the rack storage facilities subjected to forklift impact loadings. The numerical efficiency and accuracy of the approach are compared with the Monte Carlo simulations. The results show that the proposed two-step approach is able to provide accurate reliability assessment as well as significant saving of computational time. The results of the identified failure modes additionally let us know the most-critical members and their failure sequence under the complicated configuration of the member connections.
The area of this study will cover the location-wise seismic response variation of an electrical cabinet in nuclear power point (NPP) based on classical reliability analysis. The location-based seismic ground motion (GM) selection is carried out with the help of probabilistic seismic hazard analysis using PSHRisktool, where the variation of reliability analysis can be understood from the relation between the reliability index and intensity measure. Two different approaches such as the first-order second moment method (FOSM) and Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS) are helped to evaluate and compare the reliability assessment of the cabinet. The cabinet is modeled with material uncertainty utilizing Steel01 as the material model and the fiber section modeling approach is considered to characterize the section's nonlinear reaction behavior. To verify the modal frequency, this study compares the FEM result with recorded data using Least-Squares Complex Exponential (LSCE) method from the impact hammer test. In spite of a few investigations, the main novelty of this study is to introduce the reader to check and compare the seismic reliability assessment variation in different seismic locations and for different earthquake levels. Alongside, the betterment can be found by comparing the result between two considered reliability estimation methods.
The requirements of reliability verification for new products and technology are increasing more and more in accordance with the trend change of strength for safety technology, functional skills and emotional quality. In order to conduct the purpose of robust design from the stage of product development recently, the application of reliability technology has gradually increased such as detecting the failure mode throughout the HALT technique, accelerated tests and so on. The main results are as follows; i) through the pre-test and analysis, detected the basic performance and predictable failure mode, ii) HALT technique and process has been developed that can be applied test methods for the next new products.

For reliability assessment for machine tools, failure mode analyses by two viewpoints were studied in this paper. First, this study developed the reliability data analysis program, which searches f3r optimal failure distribution like failure rate or MTBF(Mean Time Between Failure) using failure data and reliability test data of mechanical parts in the web. Moreover, this data analysis program saves both failure data or reliability data and their failure rate or MTBF for database establishment. Second, this paper conducted failure mode analysis through such performance tests as circular movement test and vibration testing for machine tools when reliability data is not available. A developed web-based analysis program shows correlations between failure mode and performance test result and also accumulates all the data. These kinds of data analysis programs and stored data furnish valuable information for improving the reliability of mechanical system.
A reliability analysis method is proposed in this paper based on the maximum entropy (MaxEnt) principle in which constraints are specified in terms of the fractional moments instead of integer moments. Then a multiplicative dimensional reduction method (M-DRM) is introduced to compute the fractional moments. The method is applicable for both explicit and implicit limit state functions of complex structures. After two examples illustrate the accuracy and efficiency of this method in comparison to the Monte Carlo simulation (MCS), the method is used to analyze the flutter reliability of suspension bridge. The results show that the empirical formula method in which the limit state function is explicitly represented as a function of variables is only a too conservative estimate for flutter reliability analysis but is not accurate adequately. So it is not suitable for reliability analysis of bridge flutter. The actual flutter reliability analysis should be conducted based on a finite element method in which limit state function is implicitly represented as a function of variables. The proposed M-DRM provide an alternate and efficient way to analyze a much more complicated flutter reliability of long span suspension bridge.

This study conducted the decision method of lateral flow in abutment structures founded on the soft soils and the reliability analysis on the foundation pile for abutment. On the basis of the results, this study proposed the reliability design model. Reliability analysis was conducted by applying second moment method, point estimation method, and expected total cost minimization to lateral movement index, lateral movement decision index, modified lateral movement decision index, and circular failure safety factor for the decision criteria of lateral flow. The reliability index by analysis method had a similar tendency each other. Point estimation method was found as a practical method in the aspect of convenience because it could conduct the analysis only by mean and standard deviation as well as the partial derivative on random variables was not necessary. Optimum reliability index and optimum safety according to increasing in failure factors and load ratio were analyzed and loads and resistance factors of the design criteria of optimum reliability were estimated. It presented rational design model which can consider construction level and stability and economical efficiency overall.
During the past 25 years, in the context of probabilistic safety assessment, efforts have been directed towards establishment of comprehensive pipe failure event databases as a foundation for exploratory research to better understand how to effectively organize a piping reliability analysis task. The focused pipe failure database development efforts have progressed well with the development of piping reliability analysis frameworks that utilize the full body of service experience data, fracture mechanics analysis insights, expert elicitation results that are rolled into an integrated and risk-informed approach to the estimation of piping reliability parameters with full recognition of the embedded uncertainties. The discussion in this paper builds on a major collection of operating experience data (more than 11,000 pipe failure records) and the associated lessons learned from data analysis and data applications spanning three decades. The piping reliability analysis lessons learned have been obtained from the derivation of pipe leak and rupture frequencies for corrosion resistant piping in a raw water environment, loss-of-coolant-accident frequencies given degradation mitigation, high-energy pipe break analysis, moderate-energy pipe break analysis, and numerous plant-specific applications of a statistical piping reliability model framework. Conclusions are presented regarding the feasibility of determining and incorporating aging effects into probabilistic safety assessment models.

Most products are indeed governed by multiple failure modes. However, there are few cases in which reliability analysis applies to only one failure mode at a time. Furthermore, reliability data do not include information about failure modes, or the reliability analysis is performed using a representative failure mode. The Weibull shape parameter for failure modes is more important than one for products in the reliability qualification test. This paper presents reliability analysis methods for a mechanical component with multiple failure modes. These methods include the competing failure modes (CFM) method and the mixed Weibull method. Pneumatic cylinder test data with three failure modes are presented to estimate the shape parameter for each separate failure mode. In addition, reliability measures (B10 life, characteristic life) of the pneumatic cylinder considering three failure modes were compared with those assuming a single failure mode.
