It is a classical integer optimization difficulty to design an optimal selection scheme in cooperative relay networks considering co-channel interference (CCI). In this paper, we solve single-objective and multi-objective relay selection problem. For the single-objective relay selection problem, in order to attain optimal system performance of cooperative relay network, a novel quantum differential evolutionary algorithm (QDEA) is proposed to resolve the optimization difficulty of optimal relay selection, and the proposed optimal relay selection scheme is called as optimal relay selection based on quantum differential evolutionary algorithm (QDEA). The proposed QDEA combines the advantages of quantum computing theory and differential evolutionary algorithm (DEA) to improve exploring and exploiting potency of DEA. So QDEA has the capability to find the optimal relay selection scheme in cooperative relay networks. For the multi-objective relay selection problem, we propose a novel non-dominated sorting quantum differential evolutionary algorithm (NSQDEA) to solve the relay selection problem which considers two objectives. Simulation results indicate that the proposed relay selection scheme based on QDEA is superior to other intelligent relay selection schemes based on differential evolutionary algorithm, artificial bee colony optimization and quantum bee colony optimization in terms of convergence speed and accuracy for the single-objective relay selection problem. Meanwhile, the simulation results also show that the proposed relay selection scheme based on NSQDEA has a good performance on multi-objective relay selection.

In cooperative multi-relay networks, the relay nodes which are selected are very important to the system performance. How to choose the best cooperative relay nodes is an optimization problem. In this paper, multi-relay selection schemes which consider either single objective or multi-objective are proposed based on evolutionary algorithms. Firstly, the single objective optimization problems of multi-relay selection considering signal to noise ratio (SNR) or power efficiency maximization are solved based on the quantum bee colony optimization (QBCO). Then the multi-objective optimization problems of multi-relay selection considering SNR maximization and power consumption minimization (two contradictive objectives) or SNR maximization and power efficiency maximization (also two contradictive objectives) are solved based on non-dominated sorting quantum bee colony optimization (NSQBCO), which can obtain the Pareto front solutions considering two contradictive objectives simultaneously. Simulation results show that QBCO based multi-relay selection schemes have the ability to search global optimal solution compared with other multi-relay selection schemes in literature, while NSQBCO based multi-relay selection schemes can obtain the same Pareto front solutions as exhaustive search when the number of relays is not very large. When the number of relays is very large, exhaustive search cannot be used due to complexity but NSQBCO based multi-relay selection schemes can still be used to solve the problems. All simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed schemes.

Cooperative communications can significantly improve the wireless transmission performance with the help of relay nodes. In cooperative communication networks, relay selection and power allocation are two key issues. In this paper, we propose a relay selection and power allocation scheme RS-PA-PSACO (Relay Selection-Power Allocation-Particle Swarm Ant Colony Optimization) based on PSACO (Particle Swarm Ant Colony Optimization) algorithm. This scheme can effectively reduce the computational complexity and select the optimal relay nodes. As one of the swarm intelligence algorithms, PSACO which combined both PSO (Particle Swarm Optimization) and ACO (Ant Colony Optimization) algorithms is effective to solve non-linear optimization problems through a fast global search at a low cost. The proposed RS-PA-PSACO algorithm can simultaneously obtain the optimal solutions of relay selection and power allocation to minimize the SER (Symbol Error Rate) with a fixed total power constraint both in AF (Amplify and Forward) and DF (Decode and Forward) modes. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme improves the system performance significantly both in reliability and power efficiency at a low complexity.

This paper investigates the outage performance and optimization for the four-phase two-way transmission network with an energy harvesting (EH) relay. To enable the simultaneous information processing and energy harvesting at the relay, we firstly propose a power splitting-based two-way relaying protocol (PSTWR). Then, we discuss its outage performance theoretically and derive an explicit expression for the system outage probability. In order to find the optimal system configuration parameters such as the optimal power splitting ratio and the optimal transmit power redistribution factor, we formulate an outage-minimized optimization problem. As the problem is difficult to solve, we design a genetic algorithm (GA) based algorithm for it. Besides, we also investigate the effects of the power splitting ratio, the power redistribution factor at the relay, and the source to relay distance on the system outage performance. Finally, extensive simulation results are provided to demonstrate the accuracy of the analytical results and the effectiveness of the GA-based algorithm. Moreover, it is also shown that, the relay position greatly affects the system performance, where relatively worse outage performance is achieved when the EH relay is placed in the middle of the two sources.

The user experience of practical indoor power line communication (PLC) applications is greatly affected by the system quality-of-service (QoS) criteria. With a general broadcast-and-multi-access (BMA) relay scheme, in this work we investigate the joint source and relay power optimization of the amplify-and-forward (AF) relay systems used under indoor broad-band PLC environments. To achieve both time diversity and spatial diversity from the relay-involved PLC channel, which is time-varying in nature, the source node has been configured to transmit an identical message twice in the first and second signalling phase, respectively. The QoS constrained power allocation problem is not convex, which makes the global optimal solution is computationally intractable. To solve this problem, an alternating optimization (AO) method has been adopted and decomposes this problem into three convex/quasi-convex sub-problems. Simulation results show the fast convergence and short delay of the proposed algorithm under realistic relay-involved PLC channels. Compared with the two-hop and broadcast-and-forward (BF) relay systems, the proposed general relay system meets the same QoS requirement with less network power assumption.
Relay coordination in power system is a complex problem and so far, meta-heuristic algorithms and other methods as an alternative approach may not properly deal with large scale relay coordination due to their huge time consuming computation. In some cases the relay coordination could be unachievable. As the urgency for a proper approach is essential, in this paper an innovative and simple relay coordination method is introduced that is able to be applied on optimization algorithms for relay protection coordination. The objective function equation of operating time of relays are divided into two separate functions with less constraints. As the analytical results show here, this equivalent method has a remarkable speed with high accuracy to coordinate directional relays. Two distribution systems including directional overcurrent relays are studied in DigSILENT software and the collected data are examined in MATLAB. The relay settings of this method are compared with particle swarm optimization and genetic algorithm. The analytical results show the correctness of this mathematical and practical approach. This fast coordination method has a proper velocity of convergence with low iteration that can be used in large scale systems in practice and also to provide a feasible solution for protection coordination in smart grids as online or offline protection coordination.

It has been demonstrated that choosing an appropriate relay node can improve the transmission rate for the system. However, such system improvement brought by the relay selection may be degraded with the presence of the malicious relay nodes, which are selected but refuse to cooperate for transmissions deliberately. In this paper, we formulate the relay selection issue as a restless bandit problem with the objective to maximize the average rate, while considering the credibility of each relay node, which may be different at each time instant. Then the optimization problem is solved by using the priority-index heuristic method effectively. Furthermore, a low complexity algorithm is offered in order to facilitate the practical implementations. Simulation results are conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed trust-based relay selection scheme.
In this paper, we investigate an energy-efficient resource allocation problem in a two-way relay (TWR) network consisting of multiple user pairs and an amplify-and-forward (AF) relay. As the users and relay have individual energy efficiencies (EE), we formulate a multi-objective optimization problem (MOOP). A single-objective optimization problem (SOOP) of the MOOP is introduced using a weighted-sum method, which achieves a single Pareto optimal point of the MOOP. To derive the algorithm for the SOOP, we propose a more tractable equivalent problem using the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker conditions of the SOOP, which guarantees convergence at the local optimal points. The proposed equivalent problem can be efficiently solved by the proposed iterative algorithm. Numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm in achieving the optimal EE in multi-user AF TWR networks.

Energy harvesting (EH) and network coding (NC) have emerged as two promising technologies for future wireless networks. In this paper, we combine them together in a single system and then present a time switching-based network coding relaying (TSNCR) protocol for the two-way relay system, where an energy constrained relay harvests energy from the transmitted radio frequency (RF) signals from two sources, and then helps the two-way relay information exchange between the two sources with the consumption of the harvested energy. To evaluate the system performance, we derive an explicit expression of the outage probability for the proposed TSNCR protocol. In order to explore the system performance limit, we formulate an optimization problem to minimize the system outage probability. Since the problem is non-convex and cannot be directly solved, we design a genetic algorithm (GA)-based optimization algorithm for it. Numerical results validate our theoretical analysis and show that in such an EH two-way relay system, if NC is applied, the system outage probability can be greatly decreased. Moreover, it is shown that the relay position greatly affects the system performance of TSNCR, where relatively worse outage performance is achieved when the relay is placed in the middle of the two sources. This is the first time to observe such a phenomena in EH two-way relay systems.

This paper investigates the wireless powered two way relay network (WPTWRN), where two single-antenna users and one single-antenna relay firstly harvest energy from signals emitted by a multi-antenna power beacon (PB) and then two users exchange information with the help of the relay by using their harvested energies. In order to improve the energy transfer efficiency, energy beamforming at the PB is deployed. For such a network, to explore the performance limit of the presented WPTWRN, an optimization problem is formulated to obtain the achievable rate region bounds by jointly optimizing the time allocation and energy beamforming design. As the optimization problem is non-convex, it is first transformed to be a convex problem by using variable substitutions and semidefinite relaxation (SDR) and then solve it efficiently. It is proved that the proposed method achieves the global optimum. Simulation results show that the achievable rate region of the presented WPTWRN architecture outperforms that of wireless powered one way relay network architecture. Results also show that the relay location has significant impact on achievable rate region of the WPTWRN.
