  • Few studies are found in literature on estimation of population quantiles using the method of ranked set sampling (RSS). The optimal RSS strategy is to select observations with at most two fixed rank order statistics from different ranked sets. In this paper, a near optimal unbalanced RSS model for estimating pth(0 < p < 1) population quantile is proposed. Main advantage of this model is to use each rank order statistics and is distributionfree. The asymptotic relative efficiency (ARE) for balanced RSS, unbalanced optimal and proposed near-optimal methods are computed for different values of p. We also compared these AREs with respect to simple random sampling. The results show that proposed unbalanced RSS performs uniformly better than balanced RSS for all set sizes and is very close to the optimal RSS for large set sizes. For the practical utility, the near optimal unbalanced RSS is recommended for estimating the quantiles.

  • Relative reactivity of various Al-substituted dialkylalans ($AlR_2(X)$) in reduction of acetone has been studied with density functional theory and MP2 method. Formation of the alan dimers and the alan-acetone adduct, and the transition state for the Meerwein-Ponndorf-Verley (MPV) type reduction of the adduct were calculated to figure out the energy profile. Formation of dimeric alans is highly exothermic. Both the relative free energies for acetone-alan adduct formation and the TS barriers for the MPV type reduction with respect to alan dimers and acetone were calculated and they show the same trend. Based on these energetic data, relative reactivity of alans is expected to be; $AlR_2(Cl)$ > $AlR_2(OTf)$ > $AlR_2(O_2CCF_3)$ > $AlR_2(F)$ > $AlR_2(OMs)$ > $AlR_2(OAc)$ > $AlR_2(OMe)$ > $AlR_2(NMe_2)$. The energy profile is relatively well correlated with the experimental order of the reactivity of Al-substituted dialkylalans. It is noted that the substituents of alans have initial effects on the relative free energies for the carbonyl-adduct formation. Therefore, an $AlR_2(X)$ which forms a more stable carbonyl-adduct is more reactive in carbonyl reduction.

  • The preparation of repeatable and uniformly reconstituted soil specimens up to the specified conditions is an essential requirement for the laboratory tests. In this study for large samples replication, the simultaneous usage of the traveling pluviation and curtain raining technique is used to develop a new method, called the curtain travelling pluviator (CTP). This simple and cost effective system is based on the air pluviation approach, whilst reducing the sample production time, can reproduce uniform samples with relative densities ranging from 25% to 96%. In order to investigate the resulting suitability and uniformity from the proposed method, a series of tests is performed. The effect of curtain traveling velocity, curtain width, drop height, and flow rate on the parameters of the sample is thoroughly investigated. Increase in the curtain velocity and drop height leads to the increase in relative density for the sand specimen. Increase in curtain width typically resulted in the reduction of relative density. Test results reveal that the terminal drop height for the sand specimen in this study is more than 500 mm. Relative density contour lines are presented that can be utilized in optimizing the drop height and curtain width parameters. Sample uniformity in the vertical and horizontal orientation is investigated through the sampling containers. Increasing relative density tends to result in the higher sample repeatability and uniformity.

  • Several previous studies have not been able to derive consistent research results on the impact of the level of corruption in local countries on foreign direct investment. Therefore, in order to suggest that this study should consider the relative level of corruption rather than the level of absolute corruption, 1) first, examine the moderating effect of the absolute level of corruption on the determinants of foreign direct investment, and 2) examine the moderating effect of the relative corruption on the determinants of foreign direct investment. This study collected 9-year data from 2012 to 2020 based on the Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) published by Transparency International. A total of 549 observations (country-year) from 82 countries were sampled and a generalized estimation equation (GEE) analysis was performed. As a result of empirical analysis, it was found that the moderating effect of absolute corruption did not appear, whereas the moderating effect of relative corruption reversed the negative (-) relationship between cultural distance and foreign direct investment into a positive (+) relationship. Based on these empirical results, this study suggest that Korean companies need to consider the relative level of corruption with Korea instead of the absolute level of corruption of the investee when conducting foreign direct investment.

  • Cam mechanism is one of the common devices used in many automatic machinery. Specially cylindrical cam generates three dimensional motions. Thus, the shape design procedures must have high accuracy. This paper proposes the shape design procedure for a cylindrical cam and follower mechanism using a relative velocity method. The relative velocity method and the coordinate transformation are used to find a contact point between the cam and the follower. Also, the full shape of the cylindrical cam can be generated by using the geometric relationships and the contact constraints. As a result, this paper presents an example for the shape design of the cylindrical cam in order to prove the accuracy of the design procedures.

  • A cylindrical cam with a translation roller follower provides to transfer the translation motion and it s very useful mechanism in the automation. But. it's very difficult that the shape is defined accurately. This paper, proposes a new shape design method of the cylindrical cam with translation roller follower using the relative velocity method[l]. The relativc velocity method lculates the relative velocity of the follower versus the cam at a center of roller, and then determines a contact point by using the geometric relationships and the kinematical constraints. Finally, we present an example in order to prove the accuracy of the proposed methods.

  • Temperature and humidity are the most important factors and should be effectively controlled for the cold storage of graius. Fuzzy logic can be easily implemented to the MIMO(Multi-Input Multi-Output) control systems. For the cold storage in grain bin, fuzzy logic was applied to an air conditioning system. The capacities of the grain bin and the air conditioner are 80 tons and 30㎾, respectively. Also, the target values of temperature and relative humidity in outlet duct of the air conditioner were 8$\^{C}$ and 75%, respectively. In order to control temperature and relative humidity of air, a damper in inlet duct was manipulated for temperature control and a heater was used for humidity control. Temperature deviation and change of temperature deviation were used as input parameters for the fuzzy system. Humidity was only considered as a load. The experimental results showed that the controlled temperature of exhausted air was maintained at 8$\pm$2$\^{C}$. Relative humidity of the air was also controlled at the target relative humidity of 50∼80%.

  • In order to optimize designing process of corrugated fiberboard boxes for agricultural products, first of all, compression strength of each liner were experimentally evaluated on the various conditions of relative humidity and analyzed by liner regression analysis. At the 66 percents of relative humidity, IK(imported kraft liner) liner board lost little of its compression strength compared to others. At the relative humidity 93 percents, KA liner board lost its compression strength only 40 percents while SK liner board lost up to 56 percents. From the result of prediction modeling of ring crush strength in various humidity conditions, R square values were ranged from 0.59 to 0.97. At 56 percents of RH or below, R square values were relatively low, but at 66 percents of RH or higher, the values were 0.85 or higher. The significance values were lower than 0.001 at every RH condition. Level of significance of experimented values was about 80 percents of predicted values and R square values were between 0.89 to 0.95.
