A phenomenological approach to suspensions with viscoelastic matrices

  • A simple constitutive model for viscoelastic suspensions is discussed in this paper. The model can be used to predict the rheological properties (relative viscosity and all stresses) for viscoelastic suspensions in shear and elongational flow, and the constitutive equations combine a 'viscoelastic' behaviour component and a 'Newtonian' behaviour component. As expected, the model gives a prediction of positive first normal stress difference and negative second normal stress difference; the dimensionless first normal stress difference strongly depends on the shear rate and decreases with the volume fraction of solid phase, but the dimensionless second normal stress difference (in magnitude) is nearly independent of the shear rate and increases with the volume fraction. The relative viscosities and all the stresses have been tested against available experimental measurements.

An Analytical Study on the Structure of Personal Input Factors of Fees for Rehabilitative and Physical Therapeutic Services (재활.물리치료서비스 수가항목의 인적 투입요소 구조분석 연구)

  • Fees for medical insurance services in Korea has not being been set based on service costing. Recently in the USA, fees for physican services are determined by developing and applying Resoure Based Relative Value Scales (RBRVS). This study attempts to develop relative value scales for personal factors of rehabilitative and physical therapeutic services. The personal factors were classified into four categories as having been done in the USA;service time, treatment technology and physical efforts, mental efforts and judgement, and stress. Input factors were measured using Magnitude Estimation Method (MEM), and relative value units were calculated for each of twenty eight rehabilitative and physical therapeutic services. Results show that service time surveyed differs from that provided in the public fee schedules in 24 services; the three personal factors but the service time are highly correlated; the physical therapists hold treatment technology and physical efforts to be the most important factor in setting the for services; and that relative values developed for noninsurance services such as Silver Spike Electrode (SSP) and Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF) are higher than those of similar insurance services. The policy implications and measures for improvement for the above findings were suggested respectively.

The Magnitude of Mortality from Ischemic Heart Disease Attributed to Occupational Factors in Korea - Attributable Fraction Estimation Using Meta-analysis

  • Objectives: Ischemic heart disease (IHD) is a major cause of death in Korea and known to result from several occupational factors. This study attempted to estimate the current magnitude of IHD mortality due to occupational factors in Korea. Methods: After selecting occupational risk factors by literature investigation, we calculated attributable fractions (AFs) from relative risks and exposure data for each factor. Relative risks were estimated using meta-analysis based on published research. Exposure data were collected from the 2006 Survey of Korean Working Conditions. Finally, we estimated 2006 occupation-related IHD mortality. Results: For the factors considered, we estimated the following relative risks: noise 1.06, environmental tobacco smoke 1.19 (men) and 1.22 (women), shift work 1.12, and low job control 1.15 (men) and 1.08 (women). Combined AFs of those factors in the IHD were estimated at 9.29% (0.3-18.51%) in men and 5.78% (-7.05-19.15%) in women. Based on these fractions, Korea's 2006 death toll from occupational IHD between the age of 15 and 69 was calculated at 353 in men (total 3,804) and 72 in women (total 1,246). Conclusion: We estimated occupational IHD mortality of Korea with updated data and more relevant evidence. Despite the efforts to obtain reliable estimates, there were many assumptions and limitations that must be overcome. Future research based on more precise design and reliable evidence is required for more accurate estimates.

Differential Effects of Family Income on Self-rated Health by Age: Analysis of Seoul Citizens Health Indicators Survey 2001, 2005 (소득수준이 주관적 건강상태에 미치는 영향의 연령대별 차이: 2001, 2005년 서울시민보건지표조사 자료의 분석 결과)

  • Objectives: This study was conducted in order to determine how the association between socioeconomic position(SEP) and health status changes with age among Seoul residents aged 25 and over. Methods: We utilized the 2001 and 2005 Seoul Citizens Health Indicators Surveys. We used self-rated 'poor' health status as an outcome variable, and family income as an indicator of SEP. In order to characterize the differential effects of socioeconomic position on health by age, we conducted separate multivariate analyses by 10-year age groups, controlling for sociodemographic covariates. In order to assess the relative health inequality across socioeconomic groups, we estimated the Relative Index of Inequality (RII). Results: The risk of 'poor health' is significantly high in low family income groups, and this increased risk is seen at all ages. However, the magnitude of relative socioeconomic inequality in health, as measured by the odds ratio and RII, is not identical across age groups. The difference in health across income groups is small in early adulthood (ages 25-34), but increases with age until relatively late in life (ages 35-64). It then decreases among the elderly population (ages more than 65). When the RII reported in 2005 is compared to that reported in 2001, RII can be seen to have increased across all ages, with the exception of individuals aged 25-34. Conclusions: The magnitude of health inequality is the greatest during mid- to late adulthood (ages 45-64). In addition, health inequalities have worsened between 2001 and 2005 across all age groups after economic crisis.

Humidity Sensor Using Microstrip Patch Antenna (마이크로스트립 패치 안테나를 이용한 습도 센서)

  • In this paper, a humidity sensor using a microstrip patch antenna(MPA) and polyvinyl alcohol(PVA) is studied. PVA is a polymer material whose permittivity changes with humidity, and a rectangular slot is added to the radiating edge of the MPA, which is sensitive to changes in electric field, in order to increase the sensitivity to changes in relative permittivity. After thinly coating the area around the radiating edge with the rectangular slot of the MPA fabricated on a 0.76 mm-thick RF-35 substrate with PVA, the changes in the resonant frequency and magnitude of the MPA's input reflection coefficient are measured when relative humidity is adjusted from 40% to 80% in 10% increments at a temperature of 25 degrees using a temperature and humidity chamber. Experiment results show that when the relative humidity increases from 40% to 80%, the resonance frequency of the antenna' input reflection coefficient decreases from 2.447 GHz to 2.418 GHz, whereas the magnitude increases from -7.112 dB to -3.428 dB.

Inertial Dynamic Effect on the Rates of Diffusion-Controlled Ligand-Receptor Reactions

  • It has been known that the inertial dynamics has a little effect on the reaction rate in solutions. In this work, however, we find that for diffusion-controlled reactions between a ligand and a receptor on the cell surface there is a noticeable inertial dynamic effect on the reaction rate. We estimate the magnitude of the inertial dynamic effect by comparing the approximate analytic results obtained with and without the inertial dynamic effect included. The magnitude of the inertial dynamic effect depends on the friction coefficient of the ligand as well as on the relative scale of the receptor size to the distance traveled by the ligand during its velocity relaxation time.

  • This paper presents a fuzzy data fusion scheme which can analyze the sensor condition, the strength and location of a force applied to a test material. These can be realized by the modelling and fusioning of sensor signals and sensor properties. The technique uses, as the inference variables, relative magnitude of data (RMD), absolute magnitude of data (AMD) initial state (IS), synchronized relational function (SRF) and asynchronized relational function (ARF). To show the usefulness of this scheme, an experiment on the cantilever bar and six strain gages is carried out. The location of the force is inferred from SRF and ARF and the strength from RMD and AMD. In particular, the strength is compared with the measurement data of the force sensor.

  • The purpose of this study is to measure the rotational vibration, radial vibration, and axial vibration for the helical gear with the wide face width relative to the whole depth. For this purpose, the experimental apparatus is designed and manufactured. The gear vibration of each direction is measured by the accelerometers attached at the gear body. As a result, meshing frequency and second harmonic component are greatly contributed to the gear vibration. As the rotational speed is increased, meshing frequency component has the more significant peak than the second harmonic one. However, the doubled torque decreases the vibration magnitude on the contrary and changes order of the vibration magnitude in each direction.

Stress Fields and Deformation Caused by Sliding Indentaion of Brittle Materials (압자와의 미끄럼 접촉에 의한 취성재료의 응력분포 및 변형에 관한 연구)

  • An analytical model of the stress field caused by sliding indentation of brittle materials is developed. The complete stress field is treated as the superposition of applied normal and tangential forces with a sliding blister approximation of the localized inelastic deformation occuring just underneath the indenter. It is shown that lateral cracking is produced by the sliding blister stress field and that median cracking is caused by the applied contact forces. The model is combined with an experimental volume change measurements to show that the relative magnitude of tensile stresses governing lateral crack and median crack growth varies with the magnitude of the applied load. This prediction is consistent with the different regimes of experimentally observed cracking in soda-lime glass.

Determination of the Frequency Weighting Curves for the Estimation of Discomfort by the Steering Wheel Vibration (조향휠 진동의 안락성 평가를 위한 주파수 가중치 곡선 결정)

  • This study aims to derive frequency weighting curves for the estimation of driver's discomfort by steering wheel vibration in the vertical and rotational direction with respect to a steering column. Subjective tests for the determination of equal sensation curves, inverse of frequency weighting curves, for the two kinds of vibrations were performed using the sinusoidal signals with reference amplitudes from 0.2m/s$^2$ to 0.4 m/s$^2$ in the frequency range from 5㎐ to 100㎐. Twelve subjects joined at the tests, and median values of the twelve judgments were used to determine the frequency weighting curves. Second experiment was followed to determine relative magnitude between the two frequency weighting curves by direct comparison of discomfort due to the two kinds of vibrations at 50㎐, which showed discomfort by the rotational vibration was 1.5 times of that by the vertical vibration.
