  • The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of the distance of the light tip to the surface of restoration and exposure time on the polymerization of surface and 2mm below the surface of light-activated composite resins. Two light-activated composite resins were used. From the experiment, the following results were obtained. 1. Relative light intensity rapidly decreased when distance of the light tip to the surface of material is more than 2mm(p<0.05). 2. In all groups, microhardness was increased according to the increase of relative light intensity and exposure time(p<0.05). 3. The distance of the light tip to the surface of restoration and exposure time more affected 2mm below the surface rather than the surface(p<0.05). 4. Although exposure time was increased, difference of microhardness of the 2mm below the surface with the distance of the light tip to the surface of restoration was relatively high in Z100 between below 4mm and other groups and Z250 between below 2mm and other groups(p<0.05).

  • This dissertation, which has been prepared in the region of cheju(33o31'N, 126o32'E) from may,1987 to appril, 1989, is to elucidate the dominant characteristics of early stages in secondary succession, by examining the life history of erigeron annuus for the seeding depth of a seed was dependent upon the degree of shading. That is, on the area of ocm,the more tense the shading was, the more germination percentage was increased, while, in the case of 1.5cm, it was somewhat increased, when shading bwcame ess and less tense. The rosette of e. annuus, through its relative light intensity was decreased by shading, up to 5% of natural light, showed some strong shade tolerance, which had no difficulty in matter production. The species diversity of mixed-species community was the highest in the middle of April, the lowest in the last of may. The dominance index was the highest in the late may, the lowest in the middle of April. Toward the end of may, the occupation rate of dominance species was the highest. There was a neutral relationship between intraspecific and interspecific, owing to the differentiation of its niche, temporally and spatially. Productive structure of the community revealed a narrow leaf type which was concentratively distributed in the mid part of community height. The relative light intensity of community ground surface was 6.1%, the leaf inclination 60o,the extinction coefficient(k) 0.4, biomass of community 1,045.6 g.d.w./m2,T/Rratio 9.3, C/Frate 7.0 and sumgermanition, shade toarance and community characteristics on erigeron annuus l.in chejumed leaf area index 3.88. through the various life cycles o e.annuus, we can say that it decreases mortality of seeding caused by some stress and disturbance, for germination lasts for a long time at any opportunity available, and it promotes population growth. The strong shade tolerance of a rosette and the variableness of a life from differentiate the niche between intraspecific and interspecific within the community, and avoid the direct competition between them, thus poromoting community growth.

  • This study was carried out to analyze ecophysiological responses for seedling of Quercus serrata, Quercus mongolica and Quercus variabilis that are the typical species of deciduous broadleaved forests in Korea. And executed experiments in the climatic control room to provide necessary information to ecological forest management and methods of natural regeneration through the analysis of seedling responses. The details of experimental analysis were growth processes of 4 months after seeding that vary with the condition of three light intensity[relative light intensity(RLI) 8%, 20%, 52%] and three soil moisture[water suction(WS) Ψ=100 hPa, Ψ=280 hPa, Ψ=330 hPa] gradient, growth factors after harvesting and the nutrition condition of leaves. The results of this study are followings: 1) Early growth was prosperous after germination for the species which have more weight of acorn. 2) The formation of lammas shoot was favourable with Q. variabilis and Q. mongolica. And the rate of the occurrence was the highest in the RLI 20%, and it was remarkably reduced in the RLI 8%. 3) As the height growth of seedling of all 3 species were greater in the RLI 20% and 8% than that of the RLI 52%, they showed strong shade tolerance. 4) The increase of light intensity promoted the diameter at root collar growth, and development of main and lateral roots with all 3 species. 5) It showed that the increase of light intensity in the experimental radiation condition raised special leaf area weight(mg/cm$^2$) and leaf area productivity(mg/cm$^2$). Consequently, these resulted in the increase of leaf thickness and total dry biomass per the unit area of leaf. 6) As the increase of light intensity, the minerals contents of leaves such as N, P and K were lowered, and the increase of soil moisture resulted in the increase of P, K, Ca and Mg.

  • The growth and niche breath of four species, i.e., native plants such as Bidens tripauita and B. bipinnata and naturalized plants such as B. frondosa and B. pilosa var. minor, were studied as related with environmental gradients including light intensity, soil moisture and soil nutrient. There were no significant differences in the phonology within each environmental gradients while considerable differences were found between species; the two naturalized species bloomed and produced fruit later than the two native species. Two naturalized species exhibited relatively higher total dry weight than the two native counterparts within all environmental gradients. Total dry weight showed positive responses to light intensity and soil moisture, and negatively to soil nutrient. The relative contribution of the environmental factors to total dry weight decreased in the order of soil nutrient, soil moisture and light intensity. Both B. bipinnata and B. pilosa var. minor showed significantly higher net assimilation rate (NAR) than other species. Also, NARs of B. bipinnata and B. pilosa var. minor decreased with increasing soil nutrient. Relative growth rate (RGR) decreased in order of B. tripartita, B. bipinnata, B. frondosa and B. pilosa var. minor in response to light intensity. In addition, RGRs of B. bipinnata and B. piEosa yay. minor increased in response to soil moisture, while those of B. pilosa var. minor and B. tripartita decreased with increment of soil nutrient. No significant fluctuations of shoot/root ratio were not observed in three species, but a native species, B. tripartita showed n decreased shoot/root ratio in response to soil nutrient. Comparing the growth characteristics of the species, B. pitosa var. minor and 3. tripartita revealed vigorous growth on barren soil. On the other hand, B. frondosa exhibited vigorous growth on fertile soil. Morphologically, B. tripartita adapted to light and required considerable moisture. On the contrary, the leaves of B. bipinnata did not change considerably in their area, although it preferred habitat with abundant light. In terms of niche breadth, B. bipinnata showed the widest ranges of 0.875 and 0.845 for light intensity and soil moisture gradients, respectively. B. pilosa var. minor showed a value of 0.933 for soil nutrient gradient. B. tripartita showed narrow ranges for the three environmental factors, whereas B. frondosa showed wide values for light intensity and soil nutrient, but relatively narrow value for soil moisture.

  • This paper represents the characteristics of evapotranspiration rate (EVTR) and graft-taking of watermelon grafted seedlings in a graft-taking enhancement system using fluorescent lamps as artificial lighting source. Four air temperature levels of 23, 25, 27 and 29C, three humidity levels of 85, 90 and 95%R.H. and two photosynthetic photon flux (PPF) levels of 30 and 50 ${\mu}$mol m$\^$-2/ S$\^$-1/ were provided to investigate the effects of air temperature, relative humidity and light intensity on EVTR and graft-taking of grafted seedlings. EVTR of grafted seedlings increased with increasing air temperature and the passage of time after grafting. Also EVTR increased with decreasing relative humidity. As relative humidity decreased and air temperature increased, vapor pressure deficit increased and thus EVTR increased. It is required to maintain a low level vapor pressure deficit for suppressing EVTR of grafted seedlings during first 1-2 days after grafting. Therefore, less EVTR at initial stage after grafting would be adequate for smooth joining of the scion and rootstock.

  • We demonstrate a cost effective broadcast signal transmission at 1.25-Gb/s with 100 GHz channel spacing based on a broadband light source (BLS) for a wavelength division multiplexing-passive optical network (WDM-PON). The BLS is implemented by using mutually injected Fabry-Perot laser diodes (MI F-P LDs). The error-free transmission without a forward error correction (FEC) is achieved by its low relative intensity noise (RIN). The number of usable modes is determined by RIN and/or extinction ratio (ER) in the spectrum sliced light output.

  • The efficacy improvement issues in a unit discharge cell have been approached from the structural considerations. The tested cell designs include (a) a coplanar type with annular auxiliary electrode buried in barrier ribs, (b) a coplanar type with split auxiliary electrodes also burred in barrier ribs and (c) a coaxial type with a floating electrode stacked on the base electrode. From spatiotemporally resolved optical images of near-IR emission taken by a gated-ICCD camera and relative VUV emission intensity estimated by laser absorption spectroscopy, the differences in the discharge and light emission performances of those three cell types have been compared and discussed.

  • Apical and subapical fragments of Gracilaria verrucosa (Hudson) Papenfuss (Rhodophyta) were cultured on a temperature-light gradient table with four temperature $(15,\;20,\;25\;and\;30^{\circ}C)$ and five light intensity $(20,\;40,\;60,\;80\; and\;100{\mu}mol\;photons\;m^{-2}s^{-l})$ regimes to examine growth responses. Their growth was measured weekly. Plant weight and lateral branch formation were affected by temperature and light intensity. As compared with other reports, relative growth rate (RGR) in both fragments was more or less high with 6.27 to $11.95\%$ $day^{-1}$. It was lowest at $15^{\circ}C$ with $20\mu mol$ photons $m^{-2}s^{-l}$, whereas, the highest value was recorded at $25^{\circ}C$ with $100\mu mol$ photons $m^{-2}s^{-l}$ During the experimental period, the growth pattern in G. verrucosa was significantly different between apical and subapical fragments, even though RGR based on weight was similar. Growth in apical fragments depended on elongation by apical growth. By contrast, subapical fragments mainly increased their weights by proliferation of lateral branch. This suggests that intercalary activity (e.g. lateral branch formation) is also an important means for growth of the thallus in Korean G. verrucosa. In conclusion, the relatively high growth potential with the intercalary activity in G. verrucosa will be helpful for mariculture in Korea.

  • Seral changes in environmental factors and recovery of soil fertility during abandoned field succession after shifting cultivation were investigated in eastern Kangwon-Do, Korea. Relative light intensity of herb and shrub layer decreased gradually until 50 years and increased slightly thereafter. Amount of litter and nutrients derived from it were depicted as a parabola form showing the gradual increment during the first 50 years and slight decrease thereafter. Organic matter, pH value, total-N and Mg of soil were plotted as an early depletion-mid pinnacle form showing the extrems depletion during the first 10 years, abrupt increase in about 20 or 50 years and gradual decrease thereafter. Ca, Al, Mn and Na of soil were depicted as a pinnacle form showing the peak in about 20 or 50 years. Thickness and field capacity of soil increased gradually, but K and total-P did not show any tendency as succession proceeded. The soil fertility, overall capacity of soil nutrients and water for plant growth, was plotted as the early depletion-mid pinnacle form.

  • To develop Epicoccosorus nematosporus as a mycoherbicide of Eleocharis kuroguwai, the optimum temperature and humidity for sporulation of the pathogen were studied. Conidial production was most abundant at $28^{\circ}C$ with RH 60%, which yielded 661 mg in 9 cm Petri dish. Light intensity of 3,000 up to 7,500 lux was effective in stimulating conidial production of E. nematosporus on oatmeal agar, Light intensity affected sporulation more significantly than temperature. In the pot test, at least 12 h of dew period at $20^{\circ}C$ and $25^{\circ}C$ was required to achieve satisfactory conidial germination and appressorial formation. Few were killed at 8 h of dew period regardless of temperature. Sixteen hours of a single dew treatment immediately after inoculation killed more plants than did two or three repetitive dew treatments of 8-12 h.
