The field survey was conducted weekly from April to October in 2004 and 2005 on the sites along the 5.16 road. Sampling sites were made every 100 m height starting from 250 m altitude of both sides of Mt. Halla along 5.16 Road, which crosses the mountain from North to South. Totally 31,698 individuals of 76 species belonged to 25 families were collected. It was July that showed the largest number of species, as 48 species in the northern sloper 42 in the southern slope, and 22 at the highest site (at an altitude of 750 m), while it was April that showed the smallest as 17 species, 15 and 5, respectively. As for monthly fluctuation, the northern slope and the highest site reached their top in August, whereas it was June in the southern slope. In the analyses of similarity (chord distance) of any pair of temporal communities, the closest pair was between June and July in the northern slope area, between July and August in the southern slope and between July and September at the highest site, respectively.
A total of 40 surface samples(12 from the intertidal flat and 28 from the subtidal zone) from Gwangyang Bay, southern coast of the Korean Peninsula show a strong negative relationship between the total foraminiferal abundance and the ratios of the live to the total(L/T) assemblages. This suggests that the foraminiferal abundance is dependent on the dilution due to the input of detrital sediments, and that the L/T ratios show the relative rate of sedimentation in the study area. The intertidal flat and delta area are characterized by the relatively high sedimentation compared to the inner bay and shallow subtidal zone, and three major tidal channels where relatively low and no sedimentation is noted, respectively. Bathymetric occurrence of the species shows distinct boundaries at 9m, and between 21 and 30m, respectively. Cluster analysis shows three biotopes;intertidal flat including delay, inner bay and shallow subtidal zone, and major tidal channels. This suggests that these biotopes are formed by the ecology of the foraminifers as well as by the sedimentological setting of the study area. Several problems in relation to the relative rate of sedimentation inferred from the L/T ratios are briefly discussed.
The volatile composition of Kiyomi peel oil cultivated in Korea was studied by using gas chromatography and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The peel oil from the Kiyomi fruit was prepared by using a cold-pressing extraction method. Among the 65 components quantified in Kiyomi oil, 25 terpene hydrocarbons and 40 oxygenated compounds were identified, with peak weight percentages measuring 94.5% and 4.9%, respectively. Limonene was the predominant compound (87.5%), followed by myrcene (2.4%), sabinene (0.9%), $\alpha$-pinene (0.8%), $\beta$-sinensal (0.8%), (Z)-$\beta$-farnesene (0.7%), neryl acetate (0.6%), valencene (0.5%), $\alpha$-farnesene (0.5%), and $\alpha$-sinensal (0.5%). A unique characteristic of the volatile profile of the Kiyomi oil was the proportion of aldehydes (2.7%), which resulted from the relative abundance of $\alpha$- and $\beta$-sinensal. Another unique characteristic of the Korean Kiyomi oil was its relative abundance of $\beta$-sinensal, (Z)-$\beta$-farnesene, neryl acetate, valencene, $\alpha$-sinensal and nootkatone. Valencene and $\alpha$- and $\beta$-sinensal were regarded as the influential components of Korean Kiyomi peel oil.
Soybean, inoculated with effective Rhizobium japonicum 110, were grown by sand culture with nutrient solution containing either of 0, 1, 3, 10 or 30mM NO3-/l, and analyzed growth characteristics, NR activity, N2-fixation activity, and changes of ureide contents during the growing period. The amount of nodule formation decreased abruptly by nitrate treatment, the maximum nodule dry weight was 1.59, 1.05, 0.78, 0.09 and 0.008 g plant-1, respectively for each treatment on the 98th day. Specfic activity of N2-fixation showed the maximum rates of 140, 101, 37, 5 and 2.2 nM dw.mg-1.hr-1, respectively for each treatment in the earlier growth period. The maximum acetylene reduction activity on the 98th day after sowing was 81.5, 35.3, 14.3, 0.1 and 0.0045 $\mu$M C2H4 plant-1.hr-1, respectively for 0, 1, 3, 10 and 30 mM of NO3- gradients. Nitrate reduction activity increased along with nitrate gradients, and decreased abruptly with age. Relative abundance of ureides in plant organs was high in reproductive growth, and showed the maximum value in fully symbiotic dependent plant. Relative abundance of ureides in stem is a useful indication for the evaluation of nitrogen fixation in nodules of symbiotic plant.
Purpose: To investigate the differences in the colon microbiota composition of Hirschsprung's disease (HSCR) patients with and without a history of postoperative Hirschsprung's associated enterocolitis (HAEC). Methods: Colon tissue microbiota was characterized by bacterial deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) extraction and 16S rDNA sequencing for taxonomic classification and comparison. Results: The sequence diversity richness within samples was significantly higher in samples from patients with a history of postoperative HAEC. We observed an increased relative abundance of the phyla Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes and Cyanobacteria in HAEC patients and Fusobacteria, Actinobacteria and Proteobacteria in HSCR patients and, an increased relative abundance of the genera Dolosigranulum, Roseouria and Streptococcus in HAEC patients and Propionibacterium and Delftia in HSCR patients. Conclusion: Our findings provide evidence that the colon tissue microbiota composition is different in HSCR patients with and without postoperative HAEC.
Zooplankton are primary consumers in the food web connecting primary producers and predators such as small fish, playing an important role in energy transfer in aquatic ecosystems. Therefore, it is essential to understand the zooplankton community structure in material cycle and energy flow in aquatic ecosystems. Zooplankton in large rivers with a low flow rate would distribute vertically as in lakes. In this study, we collected zooplankton by surface water filtration and vertical haul method with 64 ㎛-mesh plankton net at three stations (ND-1, ND-2, ND-3) in Nakdong River fortnightly from June 2018 to December 2019. Species composition and individual densities were analyzed. All three stations showed differences in relative abundance of zooplankton groups between surface water and vertical integrated water, with the largest difference shown in the deepest station, ND-2. In vertically integrated water at ND-2, the relative abundance of rotifera was low by a maximum of 25% and that of cladocera was high by a maximum of 22% compared to surface water samples. These results indicate that surface water filtration method is not enough to represent the community structure of zooplankton compared to the vertical haul method in large rivers.
Recent studies have confirmed that gut microbiota differs according to race or country in many diseases, including mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer's disease. However, no study has analyzed the characteristics of Korean MCI patients. This study was performed to observe the association between gut microbiota and MCI in the Korean elderly and to identify potential markers for Korean MCI patients. For this purpose, we collected fecal samples from Korean subjects who were divided into an MCI group (n = 40) and control group (n = 40) for 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing. Although no significant difference was observed in the overall microbial community profile, the relative abundance of several genera, including Bacteroides, Prevotella, and Akkermansia, showed significant differences between the two groups. In addition, the relative abundance of Prevotella was negatively correlated with that of Bacteroides (r = 0.733). This study may provide Korean-specific basic data for comparing the characteristics of the gut microbiota between Korean and non-Korean MCI patients.
A total of 60 one-day-old Yellow-feather broiler chickens were allotted into treatment and control groups. The treatment group was fed with the diet supplemented with 3% conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) for 48 d, while control group was fed with the diet supplemented with 3% rapeseed oil. Chickens were slaughtered in each group at the age of 49 d, and the blood and the abdominal adipose tissue were sampled. Serum cLeptin and serum cAdiponectin were measured by ELISA. The total RNA was extracted from adipose tissue to measure the abundance of the chicken growth hormone receptor (cGHR), insulin-like growth factor 1 (cIGF-1), insulin-like growth factor I receptor (cIGF-IR), peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma ($cPPAR{\gamma}$), cAdiponectin and cAdipoIR mRNA by RT-PCR using ${\beta}$-actin as an internal standard. Results showed that the CLA decreased the abdominal fat index by 20.93% (p<0.05). The level of serum cLeptin but not serum cAdiponectin was significantly increased by CLA treatment (p<0.05). CLA down-regulated the relative abundance of cGH-R mRNA and $cPPAR{\gamma}$ mRNA in abdominal adipose tissue by 24.74% (p<0.05) and 66.52% (p<0.01) respectively. However, no differences were found between CLA treatment group and control group (p>0.05) in the relative abundance of cIGF-1, cIGF-IR, cAdiponectin, and cAdipoIR mRNA in abdominal adipose tissue. The data suggested that CLA inhibited abdominal fat deposition in broiler chicken may be determined by decreasing the GHR available for GH, and by inhibiting the differentiation of preadipocytes via down-regulation of $PPAR{\gamma}$, but independent of IGF and (or) GH-IGF pathway or adiponectin action.
Objective: This experiment was conducted to explore the impact of diet on the ruminal microbial community in goats. Methods: Twelve goats were divided into two groups and fed complete feed (CF) or all forage (AF) diet. The total microbial DNAs in the rumen liquid were extracted. The V4 region of microbial 16S rRNA genes was amplified and sequenced using high-throughput. Information of sequences was mainly analyzed by QIIME 1.8.0. Results: The results showed that Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes were the most predominant microbial phyla in the rumen of all goats. At genus level, the abundance of fiber-digesting bacteria such as Ruminococcus and Lachnospiracea incertae sedis was significantly higher in AF than that in CF, while the levels of fat-degrading bacterium Anaerovibrio and protein-degrading bacterium Pseudomonas were opposite. The core shared genera, Prevotella and Butyrivibrio were widespread in the rumen of goats and no significant difference was observed in relative abundance between groups. Conclusion: We concluded that the richness of fiber-, protein-, and fat-digesting bacteria was affected by diet and tended to increase with the rise of their corresponding substrate contents in the ration; some bacteria shared by all goats maintained stable despite the difference in the ration, and they might be essential in maintaining the normal function of rumen.

A survey to determine the geographical distribution and relative abundance of potential vectors of scrub typhus was conducted from October to November 2006 at 13 localities throughout the Republic of Korea. Apodemus agrarius accounted for 97.6% (80/82) of all rodents, while only 2 Myodes regulus (2/82) were collected. A total of 10,860 chiggers were collected from A. agrarius belonging to 4 genera and 8 species, while only Walehia fragilis (40) was collected from Myodes regulus. Leptotrombidium pallidum (8,137; 74.9%), a vector of scrub typhus, was the predominant species collected from A. agrarius followed by Leptotrombidium scutellare (2,057, 18.9%), Leptotrombidium palpale (279; 2.7%), Leptotrombidium orientale (232; 2.1%), and Leptotrombidium zetum (79; 0.7%), Neotrombicula tamiyai (58; 0.5%), Euschoengastica koreaensis (16; 0.1%), and Cheladonta ikaoensis (2; < 0.1 %). L. pallidum was the predominant chigger collected at collection sites in Gangwon (100%), Gyeonggi (87.2%), Chungnam (100%), Chungbuk (100%), Jeonbuk (73.9%), Jeonnam (77.0%), and Gyeongbuk (66.1%) provinces, whereas L. scutellare was the predominant chigger collected in Gyeongnam province (77.9%) and Jeju Island (62.3%). Data suggest a correlation between chigger population abundance and human cases of scrub typhus in Korea.
