The membrane processes that are commonly uscd in water and wastewater treatment are reverse osmosis (Ro), ultrafiltration (UF) and microfiltration (MF), which utilize pressure differentials. There is also nano-filtration (NF), or low-pressure reverse osmosis, which is positioned midway between conventional reverse osmosis and ultrafiltration. Reverse osmosis membranes reject dissolved ions, while ultrafiltration can be used to reject relatively larger molecules, such as protein, polysacchalides and so on. Microfiltration is capable of eliminating particles at submicron level. This paper summarizes the characteristics of MSAS process first, as it is the main membrane process applied to wastewater treatment. Two successful examples of the applications, the cases of individual building reuse system and nightsoil treatment, are then shown. The latest trend of new membrane applications, i.e., immersed-type MSAS is also introduced.

An integrated slow mixing/sedimentation and net fit fiber filtration system has been developed to reduce the high concentrations of suspended solid (SS) and total phosphorus (T-P) in the reject water from sewage/wastewater. A filtration device used in this experiment consists of coagulation, in-line mixing, air injection, slow mixing/sedimentation, and filtration processes. The performance test using this device was carried out with six operational modes for reject water from sewage treatment plant. Experimental conditions used were 16.7, 33.3, 41.7 and 50.0 ton/day of flow rate and 2~4 of Al/P molar ratio. By injection of coagulant in each operational mode, the high removal efficiencies of SS and T-P were obtained, but continuous operation time was decreased to 7.8~11.4 min in most modes. However, when the Mode 5 of the developed filtration device was applied, the continuous operation time was maintained up to 88.2 min. Also, it was found that the continuous operation time in the Mode 5 using the developed system was increased from 8 to 11.3 times longer than those in other modes. Backwashing flow rate was also very low at 5.4% of total filtered water. Therefore, it can be concluded that the Mode 5 of the developed filtration system was the most efficient treatment method for the removal of high concentrations of SS and T-P.

The purpose of this study was to figure out the impacts of iron oxide types and dosages to bloating when producing artificial lightweight aggregates by utilization of recycled resources such as bottom-ash, reject-ash and dredgedsoil. In order to figure out chemical characteristics of raw materials, XRD and XRF analyses were performed. 50 wt% of dredged-soil, 15 wt% of bottom-ash and 35wt.% of reject-ash were mixed, then the amount of iron oxide was varied at 5 to 30 wt% with intervals of 5 wt% with $Fe_2O_3$ and $Fe_3O_4$ respectively. As molded aggregates were sintered by rapid sintering in intervals of $40^{\circ}C$ from $1060^{\circ}C$ to $1180^{\circ}C$, specific gravity and water absorption were measured. As a result, the artificial lightweight aggregate with iron oxide of 10~15 vol% showed the lowest specific gravity, and it was identified that the more iron oxide vol% increases, the more specific gravity increases because of liquid phase sintering.

Contaminants such as fatty acids, triglycerides, resin acids and foam collected from a high yield sulfite weak liquor storage tank lowered the water surface tension and reduced inter-fibre bonding but also tended to benefit sheet opacity. Some common wet end additives such as defoamers and dispersants gave similar results. Lignosulfonate and naphthalene sulfonate showed little if any negative effect on both surface tension and sheet strength properties. Among the natural wood extractives. fatty acids were identified to be most detrimental followed by triglycerides and then resin acids. In order to alleviate the detrimental impact of these contaminants, membrane separation, air floatation and ozone treatment were carried out on paper machine white water samples. The effect of these treatments on removal of fatty and resin acids was quantified by a GC-Mass analysis. Reverse osmosis with a 1000 molecular weight cut off membrane failed to totally reject fatty and resin acids, but markedly reduced losses of sheet properties due to contaminants. Ozone treatment resulted in a significant increase of the surface tension and air floatation was considered to be a practical and useful method for removing fatty and resin acids from the machine white water.
A PEMFC(proton exchange membrane fuel cell) is a good candidate for residential power generation to be cope with the shortage of fossil fuel and green house gas emission. The attractive benefit of the PEMFC is to produce electric power as well as hot water for home usage. Typically, thermal management of vehicular PEMFC is to reject the heat from the PEMFC to the ambient air. Different from that, the thermal management of PEMFC for RPG is to utilize the heat of PEMFC so that the PEMFC can be operated at its optimal efficiency. In this study, dynamic thermal management system is modeled to understand the response of the thermal management system during dynamic operation. The thermal management system of PEMFC for RPGFC is composed of two cooling circuits, one for controling the fuel cell temperature and the other for heating up the water for home usage. Dynamic responses and operating strategies of the PEMFC system are investigated during load changes.

Nowadays blending ratio of OMG (old magazine) in recovered paper used for manufacturing newspaper have been increased. When large amount of OMG is consumed in newsprint mill, brightness can be improved by inorganic pigments of coating layer. On the other hand decrease in yield of deinking process will be encountered because the pigments can be removed as reject of froth flotation process. Therefore selection of the optimal deinking agent is an important. Non-ionic surfactant have been used widely in newsprint mill. Non-ionic surfactant has amphoteric characteristics. Hydrophilic group is ethylene and propylene oxide that can induce hydrogen bonding with water molecules. In this regard, cloud point is an important parameter in order to control efficiency of deinking process because hydration of the hydrophobic group can be varied according to temperature of a system. In this study, deinking properties of ONP at high blending ratio of OMG was analyzed according to cloud points of non-ionic surfactants. $L^*$, $a^*$, $b^*$, brightness and effective residual ink concentration did not affected by the change of cloud points. Especially, flotation reject decreased significantly according to increase in cloud point of the non-ionic surfactant. Consequently, when a nonionic surfactant having a cloud point higher than the temperature of the system is used, properties of the deinked pulp can be maintained and yield of deinking process can be improved.

The complexity of the papermaking system accelerates interactions between a large number of variables involved. The process operation, therefore, is subject to frequent perturbations by disturbance. Dynamic modelling is a useful tool for characterizing the transient behavior and selecting the best control strategies to reject disturbances. In this study we developed a dynamic simulation model of a fine paper production process, which consists of stock preparation, wire sections, white water circulations, and broke system. It focused on dynamic simulation in its role for developing control strategies and studying control loop dynamics related to filler loading for ash control. The results emphasized the importance of filler-loading position and length of control loop for rapid ash control and process stabilization.

The surface charge properties of a polymeric NF and a ceramic UF membranes were characterized in terms of zeta potential and acidity. Both the negative zeta potential and acidity values increased as pH increases due to ionizable acidic functional groups. Increased ionic strength reduced the acidity of the negatively-charged membrane surface as anticipated. Through these results, it can be envisioned are used to reject solutes with ionizable functional groups. Fouling of the negatively-charged membrane with natural organic matter (NOM) having a negative charge density was also investigated with respect to the surface charge. The surface charge of the NF membrane increased negatively when greater NOM adsorption onto the membrane surface occured.
Performance evaluation of four commercially available tubular membranes (AFC 80, AFC 30, PU 608, ES 404) was accomplished in self-assembled membrane testing unit. Effects of varying transmembrane pressure, feed concentration and anion type were investigated. Aqueous solutions of salts such as calcium chloride, calcium sulfate, tin chloride and tin sulfate were prepared for this study. It was noted that the investigated parameters e.g., pressure and concentration had significant effects on membrane's performance. Nevertheless, anion type effectively played its role in the rejection of salts since salt having SO4-2 anions had a better rejection than the salts containing Cl-1. It is observed that rejection was dominated by Donnon exclusion for strongly charged nanofiltration membranes whereas for weakly charged ultrafiltration membranes, size exclusion was the key mechanism to reject the ions.
Animals find nutritious foods to survive, while avoiding aversive and toxic chemicals through the chemosensory faculties of olfaction and taste. The olfaction is comparatively well characterized, but the studies of taste are only recently developing since after 2000. Genetic, immunohistochemistry, and electrophysiological studies with knock-out transgenic mice opened up the taste field in mammals. Taste in insects has been only recently been studied after mammalian taste receptors were identified. Flies also discriminate the differences of sweet, salty and sour food, while being able to detect and reject potential foods contaminated with toxins or detrimental chemicals. These discriminatory abilities indicate that flies house basic taste receptors in their taste organs like humans. For the last decade, the sweet and bitter gustatory receptors in Drosophila have been characterized. In this review, we compare the taste anatomy between humans and insects. We also introduce five canonical taste sensations in Drosophila. In addition, we introduce new taste repertoires, that fruit flies can sense water and fatty acids as well as the carbonation buffer in beverage. These studies on simple model organisms will open up a new potential for scientists to further investigate these characteristics in vertebrates.
