  • In construction of buildings in Korea, the buildings are frequently founded on the weathered ground (weathered soil/rock, fractured rock). In this case, to make a full use of a bearing capacity of a weathered ground for economic design, the shallow mat foundation system could be used. In this study, we have researched three cases of mat foundations on the weathered ground in Korea, and analyzed and considered the design procedures and the reinforcing methods. That is, we have considered the detail design, analysis proceedings, the ground settlement evaluation proceedings, the rock face mapping evaluations after excavation and reinforcing methods of the mat foundation on the weathered ground. And large scale plate load tests on the weathered ground supporting the mat foundation were performed and also load bearing capacity and settlement of actual mat foundation, considering the scale effect, were evaluated.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the behavior and the strength of SRG (Steel Reinforced Grout) externally strengthened Reinforced Concrete (RC) beams by using a nonlinear numerical analysis. The numerical simulation was carried out by using a three-dimensional (3D) finite element model. An interface element with a suitable damage model was used to model the connection between concrete surface and SRG reinforcing layer. The reliability of the finite element 3D-model was checked using experimental data obtained on a set of three RC beams. The parameters taken into consideration were the external configuration, with or without U-end anchorages, the concrete strength, the amount of internal tensile steel reinforcement. Conclusions were made concerning the strength and the ductility of the strengthened beams by varying the parameters and on the effectiveness of the SRG reinforcing system applied with two types of external strengthening configuration.

  • The reinforcing effect of single wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) on polyacrylonitrile (PAN) fiber were investigated. The tensile fracture images of the composite fibers demonstrate that SWNTs are well dispersed in PAN matrix as bundles (ropes) ca. 20nm in thickness. It was found that SWNTs play a role not only to reinforce but also to toughen the PAN fiber by increasing breaking strain as well as modulus and strength of the fiebrs. The composite fibers exhibited improved dimensional stability at elevated temperature compared to the neat PAN fiber.

  • In this paper, relatively new slope reinforcing system using an anchored wall is presented. For practical design purposes a method of external and internal stability analyses of an anchored wall installed at the toe of the original unstable or quasi-stable slope is developed. And also Murray's full-scale test results are compared with the passive resistance of an anchor predicted by the present study. Finally a design example of reinforced slope using an anchored wall is analyzed, and the safety as well as benefits is compared with a method of changing the geometry of the original unstable slope.

  • This study deals with the finite element analysis of the monotonic behavior of reinforced concrete beams and beam-column joint subassemblages. It is assumed that the behavior of these members can be discribed by a plane stress field. Concrete and reinforcing steel are represented by separate material models which are combined together with a model of the interaction between reinforcing bar and concrete through bond-slip to discribe the behavior of the composite reinforced concrete material. To discribe the concrete behavior, a nonlinear orthotropic model is adopted and the crack is discribed by a system of orthogonal cracks, which are rotating as the principal strain directions are changed. A smeared finite element model based on the fracture mechanics principles are used to overcome the numerical defect according to the finite element mesh size. Finally, correlation studies between analytical and experimental results and several parameter studies are conducted with the objective to estabilish the validity of the proposed model and identify the significance of various effects on the local and global response of reinforced concrete members.

  • Structural walls have been favored for the design of reinforced concrete buildings in seismic zone areas because they provide an efficient bracing system and offer great potential for lateral load resistance and drift control. Loads on structures due to earthquakes are not unlikely to reach, if not exceed, the design load levels. Hence, structural damage to walls is inevitable, and it is necessary to repair this damaged walls. Yet, information on repair method and data related to the strength and deformation characteristics of repaired walls is limited. In this study, specimens which have their aspect ratios of about 1 to 3 will be repaired. For the repairing the damaged walls, new concrete and new reinforcing bar are replaced with cracked concrete and the buckled reinforcing bar, respectively. The objective of this study is to evaluate the performance of the repaired structural walls in the capacity of strength, stiffness, and maximum deformation comparing with the undamaged walls.

  • The elastic buckling load or strength of a concentrically loaded slender metal column may be increased many times by reinforcing it with an assemblage of pretensioned stays and rigidity connected crossarm members. The complete system is herein referred to as a 'stayed column'. The purpose of the pretensioned stays and crossarm members is to introduce, at several points along the length of the column, restraint against translation and rotation and thereby decrease the effective unsupported buckling length of the column. This paper verifies that pretensioned cable of stayed column is effective for cyclic load and increases strength of shear wall against earthquake by reinforcing side of wall. Design process of stayed column which satisfies demanded capacity and ductility of wall is presented by analyzing result of experiment.

  • This paper is an experimental study of the normal strength concrete beam and high strength concrete beam for the analysis of bending and shear behavior. In building structure, the story height can be minimized by providing openings in beams which serves for the utility equipments passing through. The dead space in false ceiling increase construction cost, the good ceiling system such as beam with opening give to economical merits because of a substantial reduction in materials and construction cost. For the analysis on the mechanical behavior of the reinforced high strength and normal strength concrete beams with circular opening in the web, the stress concentration of the circular opening, crack pattern and reinforcing methods were studied. Twenty test pieces with different reinforcing methods and difference concrete strength were tested and their resisting forces and load deflection curves were defined in this study.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate size effect on inelastic behavior of reinf bridge piers subjected to cyclic load. A computer program, named RCAHEST(Reinforced Co Analysis in Higher Evaluation System Technologr), for the analysis of reinforced concret was used. Material nonlinearity is taken into account by comprising tensile, compressiv models of cracked concrete and a model of reinforcing steel The smeared crack app incorporated. In boundary plane at which each member with different thickness is conne discontinuous deformation due to the abrupt change in their stiffness can be taken into introducing interface element. The effect of number of load reversals with the same d amplitude has been also taken into account to model the reinforcing steel. To determine th on bridge pier inelastic behavior, a 1/4-scale replicate model was also loaded for compar full-scale bridge pier behavior.

A computer program, named RCAHEST(Reinforced Concrete Analysis in Higher Evaluation System Technology), for the analysis of reinforced concrete structures was used. Material nonlinearity is taken into account by comprising tensile, compressive and shear models of cracked concrete and a model of reinforcing steel. The smeared crack approach is incorporated. The effect of number of load reversals with the same displacement amplitude has been also taken into account to model the reinforcing steel and concrete. The proposed numerical method for the prediction of seismic behavior for reinforced concrete bridge piers is veri fief by comparison with the reliable experimental results.
