  • In this study, for one-way concrete slabs, the flexural strength, deflection, and crack width according to the amount of reinforcing bars were compared for the cases of using steel reinforcing bars and CFRP reinforcing bars. Critical performance dominating the flexural design was investigated and how to design the CFRP-reinforced concrete slab with efficiency was also discussed. It was found that CFRP-reinforced concrete slabs could achieve greater design flexural strength with the same amount of reinforcing bars compared to those using steel rebar, while deflection and crack width were relatively much larger. In concrete slabs using CFRP reinforcing bars, it was confirmed that the maximum crack width acts as a dominant factor in the design. For more efficient flexural design, it is necessary to mitigate the allowable crack width to 0.7 mm and to apply smaller diameter reinforcing bars to control the crack width.

  • An electrochemical transient response technique was used to study the corrosion of reinforcing steel bar in the concrete. Analysis of the transient electrochemical potential response in a corrosion interface to an applied current has enabled the separate components that make up the measured transient response to be isolated. These components display a range of resistances and capacitances, dependent on the corrosion conditions of the reinforcing steel, which may be attributed to the corrosion process, to effects within the concrete cover or to film effects on the surface of the concrete. In this technique, the corrosion rate was evaluated by summing all of the resistances in the separate components to obtain an aggregated corrosion resistance. However, it is possible that not all resistances identified are associated with the corrosion process. The results obtained show that the corrosion rates are significant dependent on the assignment of the separate components to either corrosion or to other processes. The assignment of resistive components associated with the corrosion rate can be clearly identified by taking a series of the transient measurement at different lateral distances from the corroding reinforcing steel. An inappropriate selection of measurement time however may result in an additional resistance, which is not associated with corrosion, being included or part of the resistance associated with corrosion being left out.

  • During the past decades, development of reinforcing materials caused a revolution in the structure of high strength and high performance cement-based concrete. Among the most important and exciting reinforcing materials, Steel Fiber (SF) becomes a widely used in the recent years. The main reason for addition of SF is to enhance the toughness and tensile strength and limit development and propagation of cracks and deformation characteristics of the SF blended concrete. Basically this technique of strengthening the concrete structures considerably modifies the physical and mechanical properties of plain cement-based concrete which is brittle in nature with low flexural and tensile strength compared to its intrinsic compressive strength. This paper presents an overview of the work carried out on the use of SF as reinforcement in cement-based concrete matrix. Reported properties in this study are fresh properties, mechanical and durability of the blended concretes.

  • The corrosion of steel reinforcing bar has been the major cause of the reinforced concrete deterioration. GFRP(Glass Fiber-Reinforced Polymer) reinforcing bar has emerged as one of the most promising and affordable solutions to the corrosion problems of steel reinforcement in structural concrete. However, GFRP rebar is prone to deteriorate due to other degradation mechanisms than those for steel. The high alkalinity of concrete, for instance, is a possible degradation source. This paper presents the long-term deterioration of the GFRP rebar under alkali environmental condition.

  • This paper reports results of a study conducted to assess the effect of degree of corrosion of reinforcing steel bar on their mechanical properties. Reinforcing steel bars, 13mm in diameter, that were corroded by electrically accelerated corrosion method in concrete specimens were removed and tested in tension. Results indicated that the level of reinforcement corrosion influenced yield point, the tensile strength and elongation of steel bars.

  • The hazard of excavation may be very high until a supporting system is completely installed. In this paper, an excavation method which uses partially reinforced soldier pile($\square$-shape) inserted by a short length steel bar was proposed and simulated by the finite element method. The reinforcing steel bar is moved down along the stage of excavation to reinforce the stiffness of the supporting system. The result of analysis showed that the risk of failure by bending moment or shear stress could be significantly reduced by the reinforcing effect of the steel bar. The proposed method could be applied to the strut-supporting wall or the diaphragm wall.

  • The major objects of this study is to investigate experimentally the strengthening effects and post-failure behavior of reinforced concrete beam-columns with enlarged sections. Tests are carried out to evaluate the influences of axial load intensities, thickness of encased steel plates and reinforcing bars in the grouted parts on the structural behavior of the specimens. The test results show that the amount of reinforcing bars and thickness of steel plate significantly affect on the structural behavior. The ultimate moment capacities of reinforced concrete beam-columns encased with 2mm-thick steel plate are significantly increased to about 10 times of those of unstrengthened specimens.

  • This paper presents a study on risk analysis in terms of contractor's costs in construction phase in which Crystal ball (software of Decisioneering, UK) has been utilized as a main tool. To realize it, a questionnaire survey has been carried out to identify the dominant factors that strongly influence contractor costs in Vietnam. Based on results of questionnaire investigation, the survey identified three factors which were duration of each construction task, costs of reinforcing steel, and cement. Then a spreadsheet model was created in order to analyze risks. The study also indicates that the cost of reinforcing steel and cement are the cause of risks for contractors. According to the suggested model, contractors may foresee the probability of completion within the approved budget, and the possibility of earning in accordance with owner's payment conditions.

  • This study sought to understand the mechanical behavior according to the shape of the connecting part of the hybrid beam. This part is composed of central steel. with the end reinforced by concrete in the experiment of cyclic loading. The experimental result was compared and verified with the ultimate strength formula. Likewise, the composite effect and the effectiveness of seismic capacity and stress transmission were examined. The types of each setup were as follows: main bars by welding type, reinforcing by end-plate type, reinforcing by shear connector type, and shear connector type. Results showed that the reinforcing by end-plate type and the shear connector type had excellent strength and seismic capacity as well as better stress transmission. This was due to the unity between reinforced concrete and the steel's connecting part. However, the experimental result was somehow different from the previously established ultimate strength formula. Thus, a definite ultimate strength formula is required.

  • Using numerical analysis modeling of Multi-electrode Array that could be applied to the corrosion state measurement of a reinforcing steel bar in concrete, the steel bar location inside concrete can be probed by the investigation of the change of the measured impedance from concrete surface determined by the electrical impedance of interface between the steel bar and concrete, the electrical resistivity of concrete, the array of electrodes and the relative location and diameter of the steel bar.
