The Green Wall is highest eco-system among a segmental retaining wall systems. Recently, the demand of high segmental retaining wall (SRW) is increased in domestic. The soil nailing system is applied in order to maintain the high SRW stability for steeper slope. However, the proper design approach that can consider the earth pressure reduction effects in soil nailing system has not been proposed. This study was performed to introduce the design case by 'Two-Body Translation mechanism' to be able to consider distribution of earth pressure in the soil nailing when designing the green wall using soil nailing system. Also, this study attempts to evaluate the earth pressure change when advanced soil nailing system is constructed using $FLAC^{2D}$ ver. 3.30 program and 'Two-Body Translation mechanism'. Also in this study, various parametric studies using numerical methods as shear strength reduction (SSR) technique and limit equilibrium technique were carried out. In the parametric study, the length ratio and the bond ratio of the soil nailing were changed to identify the earth pressure reduction effect of the retaining wall reinforced by soil nailing.
The optimum design of reinforced concrete cantilever retaining walls subjected to seismic loads is an extremely important challenge in structural and geotechnical engineering, especially in seismic zones. This study proposes an adaptive sperm swarm optimization algorithm (ASSO) for economic design of retaining structure under static and seismic loading. The proposed ASSO algorithm utilizes a time-varying velocity damping factor to provide a fine balance between the explorative and exploitative behavior of the original method. In addition, the new method considers a reasonable velocity limitation to avoid the divergence of the sperm movement. The proposed algorithm is benchmarked with a set of test functions and the results are compared with the standard sperm swarm optimization (SSO) and some other robust metaheuristic from the literature. For seismic optimization of retaining structures, Mononobe-Okabe method is employed for dynamic loading conditions and total construction cost of the structure is considered as the single objective function. The optimization constraints include both geotechnical and structural restrictions and the design variables are the geometrical dimensions of the wall and the amount of steel reinforcement. Finally, optimization of two benchmark retaining structures under static and seismic loads using the ASSO algorithm is presented. According to the numerical results, the ASSO may provide better optimal solutions, and the designs obtained by ASSO have a lower cost by up to 20% compared with some other methods from the literature.
This paper presents the results of investigation on the effects of foundation stiffness and surface loading on the performance of soil-reinforced segmental retaining walls using the finite element method of analysis. A parametric study was performed by varying the foundation stiffness and the location of surface loading. The results of the analyses indicate that the wall deformation and reinforcement tensile load tend to increase with decreasing foundation stiffness with little variation in the horizontal and vertical stress distributions at the back and the base of the reinforced soil zone. Also revealed is that the increment of reinforcement tensile load due to the presence of surface load may be significantly over-estimated when using the conventional approach. Furthermore, the external stability should be carefully examined when a surface loading is present just behind the reinforced soil zone. The implications of the findings from this study to current design approaches are discussed in detail.

The model tests were conducted to assess the behavior characteristics of geogrid reinforced earth walls according to various surcharge loads and reinforcement spacing. The models were built in the box having dimension, 100cm tall, 140cm long, and 100cm wide. The reinforcement used was geogrid(tensile strength 2.26t/m). Decomposed granite soil(ML) was used as a backfill material. The LVDTs were installed on the model retaining walls to obtain the displacements of the facing. In the results, the maximum displacement of facing and tensile strain of geogrid was measured at 0.7H(H is wall height) from the bottom of reinforced wall.
This paper investigates the failure mechanism of geosynthetic-reinforced segmental retaining walls with tiered configuration using reduced-scale model tests. The reduced scale model test set-up was established to simulate a 5 m high full-scale wall. The geometry and material properties used in the model test were determined based on the Similitude Laws. The wall failures in the model tests were successfully generated by their self weight without any surface loading and analyzed examining the digital video recordings. The failure mechanisms was examined with respect to the various offsets between the lower and upper teres and the reinforcement length. Based on the results the appropriateness of the current design guideline was discussed.
Geosynthetic reinforced soil walls are well recognized alternatives to conventional retaining walls due to many advantages in terms of ease of construction, economy, and aesthetics, among others. In recent years, the use of back-to-back (BTB) geosynthetic reinforced soil walls has been increasing for roadway and railway construction. However, there are insufficient studies concerning the behavior of BTB type geosynthetic reinforced soil walls. In this study a series of finite element analysis were performed for BTB walls with various wall geometry and reinforcement distribution. The results were then analyzed to relate the wall geometry and reinforcement distribution and the performance of BTB walls. Optimum reinforcement pattern was also investigated.
The PCRW (Precast Concrete Retaining Wall) has many advantages compared with cast in place concrete retaining wall : shorter construction period, excellency of quality and minimum interference with the adjacent structure and traffics. However, shallow foundation type of PCRW, which has comparatively better ground condition, has some disadvantages such as difficulty in transportation and higher cost due to the size of PCRW being expanded by resisting only with self-weight if there is no other supplementary reinforcement. The presented study, in order to complement such disadvantages of PCRW, have applied the micropile method. The micropile method has advantages like low-cost and high-efficiency and does not require huge space, because it can be executed with small size equipment. However, the mechanical behavior characteristics of the PCRW reinforced by micropile, which is installed to improve the reinforcement effect, is not yet clearly identified and there is no suggested standard as to the length, diameter, install angle and install position of micropiles. Hence, this method is yet being designed depend on engineer's experience. In this study, various laboratory model tests as to sliding and overturning were performed in order to identify and present the optimum type of reinforcement and reinforcement effect of the PCRW reinforced by micropiles. In addition, it also executed numerical analysis for the purpose of verifying the optimum type of reinforcement for micropiles based on the results of laboratory model tests. The optimum reinforcement type of micropiles was estimated by model test and numerical analysis. The length of micropiles is 0.4 times wall height and the diameter is 0.04 times wall length.
The advantages of precast production are fast construction, reduction of labor and insurance of good quality. In recently, the application of the precast production is increased in the earth retaining wall field. This paper presents the results of the numerical modelling that was carried out to evaluate the stability of precast and prestressed earth retaining wall under dynamic train loading. The two-dimensional explicit dynamic finite element method (ABAQUS) was used to carry out the numerical analyses. The train loading to act track is calculated by using the real measured phase angle data. Mainly, the displacement and acceleration of wall structure in time domain analyzed to evaluate the stability under the dynamic train load.

The precast production has many advantages by fast construction period, labor-saving and high quality. In recent years, the application of the precast product has been increased in the earth retaining wall field. This paper presents the results of the numerical analysis that was carried out to evaluate the dynamic stability of precast and prestressed earth retaining wall under moving train load. The two-dimensional FEM analysis was used to the numerical analyses. The train load to act on trackbed is combined by the real measured roughness phase angle and quasi-static load. The dynamic stability is analysed by the displacement, acceleration and stress under moving train load at each specified location. The results of the analysis show that the precast and prestressed retaining wall has very stable capability for the railway.
