  • In this study, the deformation and strength characteristics for non-woven geotextile-reinforced decomposed granite soil on the triaxial compression test under the same condition as the underground. The specimen of reinforced earth was made of the decomposed granite soil imbedded horizontal in a given space with non-woven geotextile. Four different type of specimen was used in this experimental programme; UR for unreinforced, R-1 for a single non-woven geotextile sheet, R-2 for two sheets, and R-3 for three sheets. According to the testing results, it was found that the strength of the reinforced soil increased when the non-woven geotextile sheets were more used. These results would be applied to the design of reinforced earth structure through the theoretical interpretation method.

  • This paper describes field installation and load test results performed for three types of micropiles in the process of developing a new micropiling method. Field tests were performed for two conventional types(i.e., micropile reinforced with steel bar and gravity grouting, micropile reinforced with steel bar and steel casing and gravity grouting) and a proposed type(i.e., micropile reinforced with hollow steel pipe wrapped with geotextile-pack and pressurized grouting). The load test results subjected to axial compression and tension and lateral loading conditions are described in this paper. The micropiles were exposed in the air in order to verify the installation quality and curing condition of grouting material via ground excavation. Axial compression and tension test results indicate that the new micropile type provide at least 40% higher bearing capacity than that of conventional types. Based on the examination of exposed piles, it is induced that the proposed method, packed micropile, provides better interlocking between grouts and surrounding soils and increases higher frictional resistance comparing to conventional types.

  • Geosynthetics reinforced soil (GRS) walls with a flexible wall face allow deformation. GRS walls constructed on the weak ground change in both horizontal earth pressures on wall faces and the tensile stress of geosynthetics, affecting the backfill in time until the deformation of the backfill and the foundation is completed. However, there are few studies that were done to measure and analyze the horizontal earth pressures and geosynthetics deformation on GRS walls constructed on the soft ground for a long period of time. Two field GRS walls in this study are constructed on a shallow layer of a weak foundation to measure and analyze geostynthetics deformation, horizontal earth pressures, and pore water pressures for the duration of approximately 16 months. Strain gauges are used to measure geosynthetics deformation; this study specifically suggests a new method of measuring nonwoven geotextile using strain gauges. Most geosynthetics deformation occurred within a month after the construction of GRS walls. The maximum deformation measured for approximately 16 months appeared as follows: nowoven geotextile: 6.05%, woven geotextile: 2.92%, and geogrid: 2.33%. Pore water pressures on the GRS wall can be ignored; however, horizontal earth pressures on the bottom and the upper part of the wall face appear larger than earth pressures at rest.

  • Recently the installation of reinforced earth retaining walls in the domestic construction site has increased, surpassing conventional RC walls. These reinforced walls have various types depending on the reinforcing material, installation method and the form of face panel. However, there are difficulties in design and construction management due to the unproved safety of construction method. In case of reinforcing materials, despite the fact that they come in all different sizes and types produced by small businesses or partially imported with cheap price and low quality, no proper standards for designing the walls have been suggested. In order to apply reinforced retaining wall system to broad cases and design the walls effectively considering site conditions, specific design and construction guidelines for efficient construction management are needed. In conclusion, this study verified that reduction factors can be greatly affected by grain sizes and stiffness of backfill materials and granularity range, therefore in case of relatively large construction site, it is required to redesign the reinforced retaining wall by evaluating site installation resistance test, applying respective reduction factors to each backfill material and select the right geogrid depending on the usage of retaining wall so as to enhance the safety of reinforced earth retaining walls with efficiency.

  • This paper presents eco-friendly planting method to overcome the problems of existing concrete retaining wall and gabion retaining wall, respectively, based on the examination on existing concrete and gabion retaining wall. Prior to doing this, proper design method was provided through pull out test. Planting method using gabion metal net and L shape green net retaining wall were compared and analyzed. According to this study, it is confirmed that reduction of construction period and economical profit in construction can be achieved by both manufacturing at the factory and self procurement at the job site as well as the use of metal net, which is applied as a substitution of existing strengthening material. For the effect of planting method, the use of L shape green net retaining wall shows superiority to environment-friendly gabion retaining wall in its ability to rootage and germination of the grass. The L shape green net retaining wall had excellent performance in helping rootage of grass and prevention of soil leakage, and even if raining period, remarkable damage of planting mat does not occur when planting mat is applied.

  • In this study, the design method of slope reinforced by the earth retention systems were systematically developed, and the flow chart of design procedure fur each system were constructed to design the slope rationally. The proposed design method is composed of 5 steps such as field condition investigation step, slope design step, landslide occurrence prediction step, slope failure scale estimation step and reinforcement countermeasure selection step. The quantitative standard of slope failure scale was established based on the arrangement of various overseas standards which is estimating the slope failure, and the analysis of slope failure scale which is occurred in the country. The slope failure scale is classified into three categories the small scale of slope failure is less than $150m^3$ of slope failure volume, the middle scale of slope failure is from $150m^3$ to $900m^3$ and the large scale of slope failure is more than $900m^3$. The earth retention system could be selected by the proposed slope failure scale based on the slope failure volume. Meanwhile, the design methods of earth retention system such as piles, soil nails and anchors were developed. The optimal countermeasure for slope stability could be proposed using above design methods.

  • The use of geogrid-reinforced earth wall technologies has progressed rapidly over the past 10 years in Korea because these technologies have advantages such as economical efficiency, graceful appearance, and easy construction. The geogrid used in the reinforced earth wall with concrete block facing can be subjected to damage among the upper and lower blocks and at the interface between the block and the geogrid. Therefore, when design of the geogrid-reinforced soil walls the required connection strength of the geogrid to the wall facing is an issue. In this study, new connection system between facing block and geogrid is developed to improve the damages of geogrid in the existing connection systems. The new connection devices are made of steel and have I-shape. This paper describes the test method and results of the laboratory testing for determination of connection strength in connection system using the I-type connection device.

  • The Green Wall is the highest eco-system among a segmental retaining wall systems. Recently, the demand of high segmental retaining wall (SRW) is increased in domestic. The soil nailing system is applied in order to maintain the high SRW stability for steeper slope. However, the proper design approach that can consider the earth pressure reduction effects in soil nailing system has not been proposed. Hence, the purpose of this study was to provide the design and analysis technique of the segmental retaining wall reinforced by soil nailing. Also, in this study, various parametric studies using numerical method as shear strength reduction (SSR) technique were carried out. In the parametric study, the length ratio and the bond ratio of the soil nailing were changed to identify the earth pressure reduction effect of the retaining wall reinforced by soil nailing.
