  • This paper presents a new method for automatic detection of skew in a document image using mathematical morphology. To speed up processing, we use reduced image but it still requires long time to estimate the skew angle so the proposed method works with region of interest, not with whole image. Character strings are connected by using morphological closing operation and a component labeling is used to select region of interest. The method considers the lowermost pixels of characters in candidate regions in the binary image of original document image. Experimental results shows that the proposed method is extremely fast and robust as well as independent of script forms.

  • This paper presents new matting techniques. The matting is an alpha estimation technique of object in an image. We can extract the object in an image naturally using the matting technique. The proposed algorithms begin by segmenting an image into three regions: definitely foreground, definitely background, and unknown. Then we estimate foreground, background, and alpha for all pixels in the unknown region. The proposed algorithms learn the definitely foreground and definitely background using self-organizing map(SOM), and estimate an alpha value of each pixel in the unknown region using SOM learning result. SOM matting is distinguished between global SOM matting and local SOM matting by learning method. Experiment results show the proposed algorithms can extract the object in an image.

  • Present work was carried out to investigate the influence of welded conditions, such as welding current, diameter of welding wire on the microstructural change and mechanical properties of TIG welded joint in AZ31B Mg alloy. It was found that good and sound welded joint was achieved in all welding conditions. The grain size decreased with increasing welding current and decreasing diameter of welding wire. Also, the second phases were homogeneously distributed in the grain and grain boundary as decreasing welding current and diameter of welding wire. The ${\beta}$ discontinuos precipitates were observed in the welded joint, but this microstructure has not been reported by previous researchs in AZ31B Mg alloy. The hardness value is affected by the existence state of the second phase and the hardness of the welded joint region is lower than the other regions in welded AZ31B Mg alloy. The strength of the welded joint region was influenced by the grain size and has more than 90%, compared to that of ASTM standard specification.

  • A new waxy corn hybrid 'Daedukchal 1' was developed from single cross between CNU 504 and CNU 2396 at Chungnam National University in 2007. Inbred CNU 504 used as a seed parent and inbred CNU 2396 as a pollen parent were collected throughout domestic regions. Tasseling date of this hybrid was seven days later than that of check hybrid, 'Chalok 1'. 'Daedukchal 1' was 19.7 cm in ear length and 4.5 cm in ear diameter. On yield trial, ear length of this hybrid was increased 29.7% compared with a check hybrid, 'Chalok 1'. 'Daedukchal 1' had white kernels and good eating quality due to high sugar content and thinner pericarp. The ratio of kernel set length/ear length was similar to 'Chalok 1'. It is moderately resistant to southern leaf blight and northern leaf blight but susceptible to corn borer. The yields of 'Daedukchal 1' in fresh ear weight and in number of fresh ear were 16% and 8%, respectively, higher than those of a check hybrid in regional yield trials for two years. Seed production for this hybrid was better because of the consistency of tasseling dates.

  • Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the superimposition accuracy of digital modes for measuring tooth movement in patients requiring anterior retraction after premolar extraction based on the proposed reference regions. Methods: Forty patients treated with bilateral maxillary first premolar extraction were divided into two groups: moderate retraction (< 7.0 mm) and maximum retraction (≥ 7.0 mm). Central incisor displacement was measured using cephalometric superimpositions and three-dimensional (3D) digital superimpositions with the 3rd or 4th ruga as the reference point. The Wilcoxon signed-rank test and linear regression analyses were performed to test the significance of the differences and relationships between the two measurement techniques. Results: In the moderate retraction group, the central incisor anteroposterior displacement values did not differ significantly between 3D digital and cephalometric superimpositions. However, in the maximum-retraction group, significant differences were observed between the anteroposterior displacement evaluated by the 3rd ruga superimposition and cephalometric methods (p < 0.05). Conclusions: This study demonstrated that 3D digital superimpositions were clinically as reliable as cephalometric superimpositions in assessing tooth movements in patients requiring moderate retraction. However, the reference point should be carefully examined in patients who require maximum retraction.

  • In this paper, we propose a new access method, called the HG-tree, to support indexing and retrieval by image content in large image databases. Image content is represented by a point in a multidimensional feature space. The types of queries considered are the range query and the nearest-neighbor query, both in a multidimensional space. Our goals are twofold: increasing the storage utilization and decreasing the area covered by the directory regions of the index tree. The high storage utilization and the small directory area reduce the number of nodes that have to be touched during the query processing. The first goal is achieved by absorbing splitting if possible, and when splitting is necessary, converting two nodes to three. The second goal is achieved by maintaining the area occupied by the directory region minimally on the directory nodes. We note that there is a trade-off between the two design goals, but the HG-tree is so flexible that it can control the trade-off. We present the design of our access method and associated algorithms. In addition, we report the results of a series of tests, comparing the proposed access method with the buddy-tree, which is one of the most successful point access methods for a multidimensional space. The results show the superiority of our method.

  • Northeast Asian regions have recently become the main source of anthropogenic and natural aerosols. Measurement of aerosols on the sea in these regions have been rarely conducted since the experimental campaigns such as ACE-ASIA (Asian Pacific Regional Aerosol Characterization Experiment) in 2001. Research vessel observations of aerosol mass and chemical composition were performed on the Yellow and south sea around the Korean peninsula. The ship measurements showed six representative cases such as aerosol event and non-event cases during the study periods. On non-event cases, the anthropogenic chemical and natural soil composition on the Yellow sea were greater than those on the south sea. On aerosol event cases such as haze, haze with dust, and dust, the measured mass concentrations of anthropogenic chemical and element compositions were clearly changed by the events. In particular, methanesulfonate ($MSA^-$, $CH_3SO_3^-$), a main component of natural oceanic aerosol important for sulfur circulation on Earth, was first observed by the vessel in Korea, and its concentration on the Yellow sea was three times that on the south sea during the study period. Sea salt concentration important to chemical composition on the sea is related to wind speed. Coefficients of determination ($R^2$) between wind speed and sea salt concentration were 0.68 in $PM_{10}$ and 0.82 in $PM_{2.5}$. Maximum wave height was not found to be correlated to the sea salt concentration. When sea-salt comes into contact with pollutants, the total sea-salt mass is reduced, i.e., a loss of $Cl^-$ concentration from NaCl, the main chemical composing sea salt, is estimated by reaction with $HNO_3$(gas) and $H_2SO_4$(gas). The $Cl^-$ concentration loss by $SO_4^{2-}$ and $NO_3^-$ more easily increased for $PM_{10}$ compared to $PM_{2.5}$. The results of this study will be applied to verifying a dust-haze forecasting model. In addition, continued vessel measurements of aerosol data will become important to research for climate change studies in the future.

  • To prevent human body injury from oxidative stress, antioxidants are very important and many research about antioxidants are generally being conducted. Hydrogen peroxide$(H_20_2)$ that is one of vitality oxygen species has been seen that cause various diseases, DNA damage and gene change. We have already known that the inhibition effect of Zizania latifolia Radix, Rhizoma on apoptosis induced by $H_2O_2$ in Neuro2A cell. And the purpose of this study was that we made a comparative study on the inhibition effect of apoptosis in Neuro2A cell on the region of Zizania latifolia(Radix, Rhizoma, Herba). Neuro2A cells were cultivated in RPMI(GibcoBRL) with 5% FBS and treated with $H_2O_2$ and Zizania latifolia(Radix, Rhizoma, Herba). Separately we measured the cell viability and analyzed DNA fragmentation. Activity of PARP, Cytochrome C, caspase-9, caspase-3, p53, p21, Bax and Bcl-2 in the cell was examined by using western blot. The results obtained were as Follows: The cell viability in all of Zizania latifolia (Radix, Rhizoma, Herba) treatment (60ug/m1<) decreased significantly compared with that of none treatment(p<0.001). Zizania latifolia Radix increased cell viability was most effective of three regions. But we had no significant difference among three regions. All of Zizania latifolia (Radix, Rhizoma, Herba) increased cell viability about twice as much as that being injury by $H_2O_2$,(Zizania Latifolia (Radix, nhizoma, Herba) 20ug/m1, $H_2O_2$ 200uM, p<0.001). DNA fragmentation developed by $H_2O_2$, but was not developed in all of Zizania latifolia (Radix, Rhizoma, Herba) treatment. PARP, Cytochrome C, caspase-9 and caspase-3 activated all by $H_2O_2$ but were not activated in all of Zizania latifolia (Radix, Rhizoma, Herba) treatment. P53, P2l and Bax activated by $H_2O_2$, and Bcl-2 got into inactivation. But the opposite results appeared in all of Zizania latifolia (Radix, Rhizoma, Herba) treatment. In conclusion, these results suggest that all of Zizania latifolia (Radix, Rhizoma, Herba) inhibit the development of DNA fragmentation and apoptosis by $H_2O_2$and the antioridant action of all of Zizania latifolia (Radix, Rhizoma, Herba) is effective.
