  • The purpose of this paper is to analyze factors affecting the net income of regional and industrial fisheries cooperatives in South Korea using panel data. This paper utilizes linear or GLS regression models such as pooled OLS model, fixed effects model, and random effects model to estimate affecting factors of the net income of regional and industrial fisheries cooperatives. After reviewing various tests, we eventually select random effects model. The results, based on panel data between 2013 and 2018 year and 64 fisheries cooperatives, indicate that capital and area dummy variables have positive effects and employment has negative effect on the net income of regional and industrial fisheries cooperatives as predicted. However, debt are opposite with our predictions. Specifically, it turns out that debt has positive effect on the net income of regional and industrial fisheries cooperatives although it has been increased. Additionally, this paper shows that the member of confreres does not show any significant effect on the net income of regional and industrial fisheries cooperatives in South Korea. This study is significant in that it analyzes the major factors influencing changes in the net income that have not been conducted recently for the fisheries cooperatives by region and industry.

  • This study analyzes the effect of airport investment on GRDP(Gross Regional Domestic Product) using Regional Production Function with public investment on social infrastructure. Particularly it includes the spillover effect of airport investment on the economies of neighbor regions beyond border. We estimate regional production function with the independent variable of airport investment stock using panel data with regional cross-section and time-series data. In the analysis with aggregate data of all industries, it shows the positive relationship between airport investment and GRDP which implies the affirmative effect of airport investment on regional economy in the aspects of direct and indirect spill-over effects. On the contrary, the research results of each industry do not appear to be the same. With the different characteristics of each industry, the direct and indirect effect may not be the same and the SOC investment contributes to the restructuring of regional economy by altering the industrial organizations of any specific region and its neighbors.

  • Purpose - The effect of regional culture has been acknowledged for decades. However, very little research takes it as an important issue in the medical tourism service decision process. This study focuses on regional culture to identify customers' preference for medical tourism in the international environment. It is proposed that regional culture may work as an critical moderator in the international medical tourism destination choice process. Especially, the destination attributes may vary according to regional culture. Research design, data, and methodology - By the questionnaire survey, the sample is collected from 2,041 potential Chinese residents in different regions of China. Regression analysis is constructed to test the effect of regional culture on Chinese customers' destination preference. Results - Results imply that regional culture plays a critical moderating role in the destination choice process. Results also indicate that destination attributes including medicine and travel characteristics are the important predictors of destination preference. Conclusions - This study provides the fundamental base to use regional culture as a descriptive variable for segmentation when establishing an effective marketing strategy. Furthermore, this research suggests that different strategies relied on destination attributes should be made to attract more Chinese customers for the development of medical tourism industry.

  • As a result of this study, the income generation effect generatded by regional universities for the region is KRW 130.6 billion (direct and indirect income effect KRW 90.9 billion, induced income effect KRW 39.6 billion). In addition, it is estimated that the effect of regional universities on inducing employment in the region is 2,145 per year. Unless quality jobs are secured, the outflow of population to the metropolitan area will accelerate, and the disappearance of local areas will emerge as a social problem in the near future. Considering the effect of local universities on the local economy revealed through the results of this study, that is, the income and job creation effects, the government will be able to prevent local extinction by providing bold financial support to local universities. If it is difficult to afford it with government finances alone, it can be solved by opening the door to universities for admission through donations, which many advanced countries are introducing..

  • This study analyzed the effect of bank loans on housing prices, classified bank loans into bank total loans, household loans, and real estate mortgage loans, and analyzed housing prices by dividing them into national-level, regional-level, and Seoul-level housing prices. The main analysis results are as follows. First, it was found that the increase in total bank loans significantly increased housing prices across the national-level, regional-level and Seoul-level. Second, it was found that household loans had a positive effect on regional-level housing prices, but were not statistically significant. In addition, the effect of bank loans on regional-level housing prices was found to be relatively small compared to the effect on national-level housing prices. Third, it was found that there was a difference in the effect of bank loans on regional-level housing prices and Seoul-level housing prices. Fourth, inflation and bank total loans had a significant positive effect on regional-level housing prices with a lag in the first quarter, and short-term interest rates had a significant negative effect on Seoul-level housing prices with a lag in the first quarter. Overall, it was found that the effect of bank loans on housing prices had a positive effect about twice that of Seoul-level rather than regional-level.

  • Arguably many studies point out that regional innovation capabilities are accepted as a major source of growth for the sustainable regional economy. Recently, a smart specialisation strategy that should reflect regional characteristics in the policy implementation process of the regional innovation system has been proposed, but empirical studies have only presented limited results. This study attempts to overcome limitations by approaching smart specialisation as a supplementary strategy for existing regional innovation research. To this end, smart specialisation was not an alternative strategy for the regional innovation system, but rather the institutional elements of regional innovation capabilities, and the relationship between regional innovation capabilities and the local economy was analyzed to identify the impact of smart specialisation on the local economy. A study was conducted through a panel model consisting of 16 cities and provinces in Korea and 10 years from 2009-2018, and the FGLS model was finally used through the process of searching for an appropriate panel model. As a result of the study, smart specialisation consisting of industry related variety and non-related variety had a positive effect on the local economy. In addition, other regional innovation capabilities measured by dividing them into base and facilitating factors also had a positive effect on the local economy, reaffirming the results of positive research between existing regional innovation and the local economy. This study is meaningful in that smart specialisation lacking in domestic research was viewed as an institutional element of regional innovation capabilities, and it was measured through regional industry-related variety and non-related variety.

  • This paper examines the empirical magnitude of local human capital spillovers in Korea during the 1980s and mid-1990s. Local human capital spillovers exists if plants in regions with a higher level of human capital can produce more given their own amount of input (Moretti 2004c). In particular, this paper explores an educational reform in South Korea which exogenously induced a large amount of variation in regional human capital levels. Using annually collected plant level data, I explore the effect of changes in the regional human capital levels induced by this reform on plant productivity in Korea. My results suggest that this effect is limited. I find a positive correlation between a regional level of human capital and plant productivity. However, after further addressing endogeneity using an instrumental variable, the effect of the overall regional human capital level on productivity decreases and becomes statistically insignificant.

  • The proportions of both the fishery industry and the gross regional domestic product in the national economy are gradually decreasing. If high value-added processed fishery products suitable for regional characteristics are developed, these proportions can be improved. In pursuit of this, it is first necessary to discover processed fishery products specialized in each region and then establish a development framework for them. In this study, location coefficient was used to find processed fishery products specialized in each region. Then, dynamic shift-share analysis was used to establish a development framework which consisted of four development types of processed fishery products. Based on the magnitudes of the industrial mix effect and the regional shift effect, the supporting strategy directions were proposed for four development types of processed fishery products. The supporting strategy directions were all focused on revitalizing the local economy.
