Since the establishment of the Groundwater Act in Korea in 1993, the national policy on groundwater has focused on the preservation and management of groundwater, which should be used only as a subsidiary water resource. However, population growth, increased water demand, climate change, and the need for uniform water distribution have brought changes to groundwater policy, and have led to the prioritization of development projects such as groundwater dams and river bank filtration. Population growth, changes to the water environment, and increased water risks have all played a role in triggering rapid growth within the water industry; the size of the investment in water resources will also continue to increase worldwide. Until now, private wells and bottled mineral water have led the groundwater industry in South Korea. However, a new area of the groundwater industry, which includes the health and medical sciences, employs groundwater properties derived from regional geology, and is growing. This requires the advancement of groundwater research and technical development connected with ICT (Information and Communication Technology) and medical science, and that the public development of groundwater and its various applications is expanded through locating groundwater in the core of the water industry cluster.

Gas hydrates are ice-like compounds that form at the low temperature and high pressure conditions common in shallow marine sediments at water depths greater than 300-500 m when concentrations of methane and other hydrocarbon gases exceed saturation. Estimates of the total mass of methane carbon that resides in this reservoir vary widely. While there is general agreement that gas hydrate is a significant component of the global near-surface carbon budget, there is considerable controversy about whether it has the potential to be a major source of fossil fuel in the future and whether periods of global climate change in the past can be attributed to destabilization of this reservoir. Also essentially unknown is the interaction between gas hydrate and the subsurface biosphere. ODP Leg 204 was designed to address these questions by determining the distribution, amount and rate of formation of gas hydrate within an accretionary ridge and adjacent basin and the sources of gas for forming hydrate. Additional objectives included identification of geologic proxies for past gas hydrate occurrence and calibration of remote sensing techniques to quantify the in situ amount of gas hydrate that can be used to improve estimates where no boreholes exist. Leg 204 also provided an opportunity to test several new techniques for sampling, preserving and measuring gas hydrates. During ODP Leg 204, nine sites were drilled and cored on southern Hydrate Ridge, a topographic high in the accretionary complex of the Cascadia subduction zone, located approximately 80km west of Newport, Oregon. Previous studies of southern Hydrate Ridge had documented the presence of seafloor gas vents, outcrops of massive gas hydrate, and a pinnacle' of authigenic carbonate near the summit. Deep-towed sidescan data show an approximately $300\times500m$ area of relatively high acoustic backscatter that indicates the extent of seafloor venting. Elsewhere on southern Hydrate Ridge, the seafloor is covered with low reflectivity sediment, but the presence of a regional bottom-simulating seismic reflection (BSR) suggests that gas hydrate is widespread. The sites that were drilled and cored during ODP Leg 204 can be grouped into three end-member environments basedon the seismic data. Sites 1244 through 1247 characterize the flanks of southern Hydrate Ridge. Sites 1248-1250 characterize the summit in the region of active seafloor venting. Sites 1251 and 1252 characterize the slope basin east of Hydrate Ridge, which is a region of rapid sedimentation, in contrast to the erosional environment of Hydrate Ridge. Site 1252 was located on the flank of a secondary anticline and is the only site where no BSR is observed.

Recently, global climate change has caused a catastrophic event in the Arctic Ocean, directly and indirectly. The air-sea interaction has caused the significant sea-ice reduction in the Arctic Ocean, and has been accelerating the Arctic warming. Many scientists are worried about the Arctic environment change, suggesting that many of anomalous events will produce direct or indirect biophysical effects on the Arctic. The aim of this study is to understand the inter-annual variability of the Arctic Ocean in wide-view using multi-satellite-derived measurements. Sea surface temperature (SST) and sea ice concentration (SIC) data were obtained from Optimum Interpolation Sea Surface Temperature (OISST) and ECMWF ERA-Interim, respectively. Chlorophyll-a concentration (CHL) was obtained from Sea-Viewing Wide Field-of-View Sensor (SeaWiFS) and Aqua sensor from MODerate resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS-Aqua) sensor which has continuously observed since 1998. From 1998 to 2016 summer in the Arctic Ocean which was defined as regions over $60^{\circ}N$ in this study, there were three consequences that CHL increase ($0.15mg\;m^{-3}\;decade^{-1}$), SST warming ($0.43^{\circ}C\;decade^{-1}$) and SIC decrease ($-5.37%\;decade^{-1}$). While SST and SIC highly correlated each other (r = -0.76), a relationship between CHL and SIC was very low ($r={\pm}0.1$) because of data limitations. And a relationship between CHL and SST shows meaningful results ($r={\pm}0.66$) with regional differences.

In the processes of hydrological cycle, when precipitation reaches the ground surface, water may become surface runoff or infiltrate into soil and then possibly further percolate into groundwater aquifer. A part of the water is returned to the atmosphere through evaporation and transpiration. Soil moisture dynamics driven climate fluctuations plays a key role in the simulation of water transfer among ground surface, unsaturated zone and aquifer. In this study, a one-layer canopy and a four-layer soil representation is used for a coupled soil-vegetation modeling scheme. A non-zero hydraulic diffusivity between the deepest soil layer modeled and groundwater table is used to couple the numerical equations of soil moisture and groundwater dynamics. Simulation of runoff generation is based on the mechanism of both infiltration excess overland flow and saturation overland flow nested in a numerical model of soil moisture dynamics. Thus, a comprehensive hydrological model integrating canopy, soil zone and aquifer has been developed to evaluate water resources in the plain region of Huaihe River basin in East China and simulate water transfer among precipitation, surface water, soil moisture and groundwater. The newly developed model is capable of calculating hydrological components of surface runoff, evapotranpiration from soil and aquifer, and groundwater recharge from precipitation and discharge into rivers. Regional parameterization is made by using two approaches. One is to determine most parameters representing specific physical values on the basis of characterization of soil properties in unsaturated zone and aquifer, and vegetations. The other is to calibrate the remaining few parameters on the basis of comparison between measured and simulated streamflow and groundwater tables. The integrated modeling system was successfully used in the Linhuanji catchment of Huaihe plain region. Study results demonstrate that (1) on the average 14.2% of precipitation becomes surface runoff and baseflow during a ten-year period from 1986 to 1995 and this figure fluctuates between only 3.0% in drought years of 1986, 1988, 1993 and 1994 to 24.0% in wet year of 1991; (2) groundwater directly deriving from precipitation recharge is about 15.0% t of the precipitation amount, and (3) about half of the groundwater recharge flows into rivers and loses through evaporation.
Climatic abnormal phenomena involving El Nino and La Nina have been frequently reported in recent decades. The interannual climate variability represented by El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is sometimes investigated to account for the climatic abnormal phenomena around the world. Although many hydroclimatologists have studied the impact of ENSO on regional precipitation and streamflow, however, there are still many difficulties in finding the dominant causal relationship between them. This relationship is very useful in making hydrological forecasting models for water resources management. In this study, the seasonal relationships between ENSO and hydrologic variables were investigated in Korea. As an ENSO indicator, Southern Oscillation Index (SOI) was used. Monthly precipitation, monthly mean temperature, and monthly dam inflow data were used after being transformed to the standardized normal index. Seasonal relationships between ENSO and hydrologic variables were investigated based on the exceedance probability and distribution of hydrologic variables conditioned on the ENSO episode. The results from the analysis of this study showed that the warm ENSO episode affects increases in precipitation and temperature, and the cold ENSO episode is related with decreases in precipitation and temperature in Korea. However, in some regions, the local relationships do not correspond with the general seasonal relationship.
This study was conducted to develop an artificial diet for the mugwort looper, Ascotis selenaria (Lepidoptera: Geometridae), which is an insect pest to leaves of citrus (Citrus unshiu). Corn and soybean powder were selected as main nutrient sources for larvae of A. selenaria after several diets consisted of wheat germ, corn, kidney bean and/or soybean were tested for larval development and survival. A higher amount of the main nutrients in the diet increased the larval survivorship. Addition of yeast and cholesterol in diet increased the larval survivorship. Finally the composition of diet was decided as followings; corn 100 g, soybean 100 g agar 25 g, Brewers' yeast 30 g, cholesterol 0.5 g, Vanderzant vitamin mixture 2 g, Wesson's salt mixture 2 g, sorbic acid 2 g, ascorbic acid 2 g, and methyl-4-hydroxybenzoate 2.5 g, and distilled water 1 liter. Development periods of larvae and pupae, survival rate and fecundity of A. selenaria reared on the diet were not significantly different with those on the host plant, citrus leaves. Larvae of early instars were reared in a group, while larvae of later instars (5-6th) were reared individually. Adult mating was conducted in a plastic cage and an oilpaper covered with a gauze was provided as an oviposition site.
As a viable option for retrieval of LST (Land Surface Temperature), this paper presents a DNN (Deep Neural Network) based approach using 148 Landsat 8 images for South Korea. Because the brightness temperature and emissivity for the band 10 (approx. 11-㎛ wavelength) of Landsat 8 are derived by combining physics-based equations and empirical coefficients, they include uncertainties according to regional conditions such as meteorology, climate, topography, and vegetation. To overcome this, we used several land surface variables such as NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index), land cover types, topographic factors (elevation, slope, aspect, and ruggedness) as well as the T0 calculated from the brightness temperature and emissivity. We optimized four seasonal DNN models using the input variables and in-situ observations from ASOS (Automated Synoptic Observing System) to retrieve the LST, which is an advanced approach when compared with the existing method of the bias correction using a linear equation. The validation statistics from the 1,728 matchups during 2013-2019 showed a good performance of the CC=0.910~0.917 and RMSE=3.245~3.365℃, especially for spring and fall. Also, our DNN models produced a stable LST for all types of land cover. A future work using big data from Landsat 5/7/8 with additional land surface variables will be necessary for a more reliable retrieval of LST for high-resolution satellite images.

To improve the accuracy of frost warning system for pear orchard in a complex terrain in Naju area, the daily minimum temperature forecasted by Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) was interpolated using a regional climate model based on topoclimatic estimation and optimum scale interpolation from 2004 to 2005. Based on the validation experiments done for three pear orchards in the spring of 2004, the results showed a good agreement between the observed and predicted values, resulting in improved predictability compared to the forecast from Korea Meteorological Administration. The differences between the observed and the predicted temperatures were $-2.1{\sim}2.7^{\circ}C$ (on average $-0.4^{\circ}C$) in the valley, $-1.6{\sim}2.7^{\circ}C$ (on average $-0.4^{\circ}C$) in the riverside and $-1.1{\sim}3.5^{\circ}C$ (on average $0.6^{\circ}C$) in the hills. Notably, the errors have been reduced significantly for the valley and riverside areas that are more affected by the cold air drainage and more susceptible to frost damage than hills.
Two red pepper(Capsicum annuum L.) cultivars, 'Geumtap' and 'Bugang', were cultivated at main producing areas in Korea and harvested four times in 1998 and 1999. Length, weight, dry matter ratio and color of red peppers were measured at each harvest. The relations between external characteristics with regional climatic elements such as total accumulated air temperature, total amount of precipitation and duration of sunshine during the fruit growing periods were compared. Length and fruit weight decreased by delayed harvest. These characteristics were shown significant difference according to cultivars, but not to growing year. Dry matter ratio had a tendency to increase at the 3rd and 4th harvest. The red color as measured a${\times}$L values of pepper powder, increased with being later in harvesting, but the trend was uncertain. In fruit growth, fruit length showed a positive correlation with total accumulated air temperature in later growth period of fruits(from 1st to 20th day before harvesting), and fruit weight had relationships with accumulated air temperature and total amount of precipitation in later growth period of fruit. There was no relation between dry matter ratio and climate elements. The red color was shown high correlations with total amount of precipitation and duration of sunshine. There was highest coefficient of determination($r^2$) in all external characteristics.
This study was conducted to research the Selection Attributes of tourists in Jeonju Hanok Village. The purpose of this study was to study the importance and satisfaction after visiting the Jeonju Hanok Village using IPA analysis, and to provide results and marketing implications. The survey was conducted from the October to the November in 2018. A total of 300 questionnaires were distributed and 258 responded questionnaires were reliable to be used as a sample. The result of the survey was analyzed by using SPSS 15.0 version for window with Paired t-test and IPA method. Frequency Analysis was also conducted for the characteristic of samples. As a result of the study, first, the cleanliness of tourist attractions was the highest among the selection attributes, and the next ranking was in the order of parking lot facilities, natural scenery, food, and weather. Second, the natural property was the most satisfactory as a selection property item that tourists visiting Hanok Village were satisfied with, followed by climate(weather), regional characteristics, historical and cultural resources, and cleanliness of tourist attractions. Third, depending on the importance-satisfaction value of the selection attribute variable perceived by tourists visiting Hanok Village, it is necessary to develop various programs in Hanok Village and prepare measures to increase tourist satisfaction.
