Purpose: In this study, the distribution and differences in refractive powers on trial case lenses were investigated. Methods: We measured refractive powers at optical center and periphery using 4 trial case lens sets. According to international standards, the distribution and uniformity in refractive powers were investigated. Results: The lens shapes were different in different kinds of trial case lenses and some of lenses were out of tolerance according international standards. In some cases, the power differences were found between front and back side as well as between optical center and peripheral regions and also the cylindrical power on spherical lens and spherical power on the cylindrical lens were measured. Conclusions: Trial case lens are used to assess the refractive error, therefore, more precise control of the manufacturing process for trial case lenses and more thorough quality control will be required to offer an accurate vision test. More careful attention in using trial case lens is also required.
In a artificial hypermetropia with the accommodative response, we investigated a diameter of blur circle as a function of test lens refractive power. In a schematic eye model of the hypermetropia, the second focal length along to accommodated power of the crystal lens are calculated as a function of test lens power and, also distance between the retina and exit pupil are calculated as a function of accommodated power. As these results are compared, the size of blur circle on the retina are obtained.
Purpose: To evaluate the changes of refractive power when worn soft contact lenses were temporarily removed. Methods: 91 soft contact lens wearers (15 males and 76 females; total 182 eyes) from 17 to 39 years of age (average: $24{\pm}4.8$ years) were participated. Objective and subjective refraction, and corneal radius were measured at 0, 30, 60 and 90 min after lens removal. The changes in refractive power were evaluated between measurements over time. The other parameters such as types of lenses, fitting and wearing conditions were also assessed. Results: Objective refraction, subjective refraction and corneal radius were significantly changed according to measured time (p<0.0001). A moderate myopic shifts was observed at the beginning (30 min after lens removal) and a slight myopic shift at the late of measurement (60 min to 90 min after lens removal). There are no significant differences between lens types, fitting states, wearing time, wearing days and sleeping time in the previous day. However, there was significant interaction in changes for corneal radius between measuring time and lens type (p=0.017), fitting state (p=0.019), and sleeping time prior to the test (p=0.010). Conclusions: Time to reach refractive and corneal radius stability after contact lens removal revealed at least more than 60 min, regardless of types of lenses, fitting and wearing conditions. Therefore, refraction for correction should be performed after waiting for more than that time as possible.
Progressive addition lenses (PAL) have very wide application in the modern glasses market. The unique progressive surface can make a lens have progressive refractive power, which can meet the human eye's different needs for distance-vision and near-vision. According to the national glasses fabrication standard, the difference between actual optical power after fabrication and nominal design value should be less than 0.1D over the lens effective area. The optical power distribution of PAL is determined directly by the surface. Consequently, the surface processing accuracy requirement is proposed. Beginning from the surface expressions of progressive addition lenses, the relationship equations between the surface sag and optical power distribution are derived. They are demonstrated through tolerance analysis and test of an example progressive addition lens with addition of 2.09D (5.46D-7.55D). The example addition surface is fabricated under given accuracy by a single-point diamond ultra-precision machine. The optical power of the PAL example is tested with a focal-meter after fabrication. The optical power addition difference between test result and design nominal value is 0.09D, which is less than 0.1D. The derived relationship between the surface error and optical power is verified from the PAL example simulation and test result. It can provide theoretical tolerance analysis proof for the PAL surface fabricating process.
Purpose. To analysis the prevalence of the myopia and corneal astigmatism in Korea women university students. Methods. From August 2011 to December 2012, one hundreds subjects were performed in refraction test using the Auto-Keratometry. Results. The mean age of the 100 subjects (200 eyes) was $21.23{\pm}2.34$. The mean spherical refractive power was -$1.78{\pm}1.65$(OD) and -$1.83{\pm}1.67$(OS) Diopter. The mean astigmatism power was $1.22{\pm}0.96$ (OD) and $1.27{\pm}0.91$ (OS). The mean corneal astigmatism was $1.44{\pm}0.81$(OD) and $1.55{\pm}0.93$(OS). Corneal astigmatism was between 0.25 D and 1.25 D in 67.7% of eyes, 1.25 D or higher in 27.5% eyes, and less than 0.25 D in 4.8% of eyes. Astigmatism was with the rule in 65%, against the rule in 31.5%, and oblique in 3.5%. There was a statistical significance between right eye and left eye in the spherical equivalent power(p=0.002). Also there was a statistical significance between spherical power and refractive astigmatism in OD(p=0.006) and OS(0.003) and a statistical significance between corneal astigmatism and refractive astigmatism in OS(p=0.0003). However, there was not a statistical significance between spherical power and corneal astigmatism in OD(p=0.08) and OS(0.1) and a statistical significance between corneal astigmatism and refractive astigmatism in OS(p=0.48). Conclusions. In this study, these results suggested that the analysis of the refractive myopia and corneal astigmatism can provide the visual correct and useful diagnosis information for the eyewear dispensing, contact lens fitting and corneal refraction surgery.
Purpose: To develop more accurate wet measuring system combining the wet cell, automatic lensmeter and the related software for hydrophilic contact lenses and to verify the accuracy of those measuring holder system already available in the market. Methods: Refractive power measurement were done in both a conventional method which has been commonly used in optical shops and a new method which is recently developed in korea. Hydrophilic contact lens of korean brand was chosen as a test material and was tested by water content ratio and by spherical refractive power. Results: When spherical power of -3.00 D contact lens is measured in the newly developed wet cell measurement holder with automatic lensmeter, it reads -3.01 D at water content ratio of 38%. -3.00 D at 45% and -2.98 D at 58%. The same experiment with the Poster soft contact lens wet cell measurement holder maintaining other conditions same resulted in -3.60 D at the water content ratio of 38%, -3.06 D at 45% and -2.46 D at 58%. Conclusions: At the higher water content, the refractive power values measured by both of the wet cell measuring holders are shown lower, and additionally, the new method using the wet cell holder and new software program in a automatic lensmeter showed more accurate readings than conventional Poster soft contact lens wet cell measuring system.
In order to analyze the difference of lenses production, we measured the refractive power and the thickness of their optical centers using ophthalmic lenses which were distributed at home country and abroad. The home products were manufactured to be next to foreign goods, but there were several cases to exceed acceptable limits and we need to reduce the deviation from measuring values in the same lenses. To get a beat on advanced countries, rearing technical expert, hard quality test and process control and standardization of lenses are essential to home lens industrials.
A collimator refers to an optical system that images a collimated beam at a desired point. A resolution target located at a near distance can be converted into a virtual image located at a long distance. To test the resolution for mobile cameras, a large target is placed at a long distance. If a collimator system is used, the target can be placed at a near distance. The space required for a resolution inspection can thus be drastically reduced. However, to inspect a mobile camera, the exit pupil of the collimator system and the entrance pupil of the mobile camera must match, and the stop of the collimator system must be located on the last surface. Because a collimator system cannot be symmetrical with respect to the stop, the distortion becomes extremely large, which can be corrected by combining the collimator symmetrically with respect to the object plane. A novel system was designed to inspect an optical lens on a mobile phone. After arranging the refractive power, lenses were added using the equivalent lens design method. The distortion was reduced to less than 1%. This optical system satisfies a half-field angle of 45° and an optical performance sufficient for inspection.
Purpose: We aimed to evaluate reliability of eye exam for visual acuity as a function of distance. Methods: There were 39 patients (78 eyes) who had visual acuity 1.0 or more at 5 meters. We measured refractive power of patients at each distances, 5 meters, 4 meters and 3 meters. Automatic chart (LCD-700, Hyeseong Optic. Co., Korea) used for visual acuity, skiascope (Beta 200, Heine, Germany) and auto refractometer (RK-5, Canon, Japan) used as for objective refraction. Accommodation was examined by minus lens addition methods, and Accommodative lag was examined by grid chart for reading distance. Results: Being compared to 3 meter test, Amount of corrected spherical refractive power decreased by $0.10{\pm}0.38$ D, astigmatism decreased by $0.05{\pm}0.10$ D, and axis of astigmatism rotated toward to temporal by $2.64{\pm}18.75$ degrees for right eyes, by $11.43{\pm}48.55$ degrees for left eyes in case of 5 meter test. Changes of corrected refraction and astigmatism were slightly correlated (r=-0.31, r=-0.29). Conclusions: Because corrected refraction power and amount of astigmatism decreased and axis of astigmatism tends to turn the temporal direction according to exam distance, examination distance of visual acuity should improved as to 5 meters.

Purpose: The present study was performed to evaluate the safety of ophthalmic lenses in domestic market since eyeglasses wearers could be exposed to the negligent accident by damaged ophthalmic lenses. Method: Totally, 160 ophthalmic lenses (NK55, ${n_{d}}$ = 1.56) with the refractive powers of -3D, -6D, +3D, +6D manufactured by 4 companies in domestic market were evaluated using drop ball test. In accordance with FDA standard, steel ball (~16 g) was freely dropped on these ophthalmic lenses from 127 cm high and the surfaces of lenses were observed. Results: From the study, center thicknesses of NK55 ophthalmic lenses manufactured by 4 different companies showed somewhat different numbers even though the lenses had the same refractive index and powers. All convex lenses of +3D, +6D were evaluated as the safe lenses since there was no damage such as crack and broken found on the lens surfaces after drop ball testing. However, some noticeable broken was shown on the surfaces of concave lenses with relatively thinner center thickness. Especially, 59(73.8%) of total 80 concave lenses with the refractive power of -3D and -6D classified as unacceptable lenses to FDA standard. Conclusions: From the results, the negligent accident by damaged ophthalmic lenses should be considered as well as the correction of visual acuity, design and price when customers purchase eyeglasses. Thus, the enforcement regulation like drop ball testing of uncut ophthalmic lens could be suggested to guarantee the safety of ophthalmic lenses in domestic market.
