Sustainability and Challenges of Climate Change Mitigation through Urban Reforestation - A Review

  • The realities of Climate change and its untold implications on the livelihood of man are no longer new worldwide. In attempts to subdue the negative implications of Climate change scenario globally, several measures have being suggested and being put in place. One of such measures is urban reforestation especially in the developing nations where forest resources have extremely and uncontrollably exploited. Most of cities in developing nations are almost devoid of regularly maintained trees for whatever purpose. Thus, the enormous roles which urban tree performs are lacked in most cities. In order to subdue excessive heat in cities arising from exposure of urban land areas urban reforestation exercise needs to be embarked upon. The investigation was carried out through desk studies and review of relevant publications to examine what it entails to have a sustainable reforestation programme in cities. The study revealed that several factors need to be taken into consideration if sustainable urban reforestation will be achieved, especially in developing countries. These factors include urban soil nutrients status investigation, appropriate tree type study, public perception about the tree types, relevant legal instrument to achieve successful reforestation exercise in cities among others were found to be salient to this exercise. Urban reforestation has enormous potentials to subdue Climate change consequences, including urban renewal if adequate provision is made for its sustainability, especially in developing countries. To ensure this is realized it is recommended that relevant ministry/agency could be put in charge for the maintaining, cutting and replanting of urban tree and all that are involved in urban tree sustainability.

Implementation of the virtual reforestation system using spatial data

  • In this study the spatial distribution characters of burnt forest site was first considered by analyzing spatial data and monitoring forest landscape before/after lire to restore the site. Then suitable tree species on each forest site should be selected through the weighted score analysis of GIS analysis methods. Finally. the best forest stand arrangement method could be simulated on the system for the advanced reforestation technology in Korea. For this purpose, the virtual reforestation system was implemented by using the concept of virtual GIS and CBD (Component Based Development) method. By use of this system the change of forest landscape of burnt forest area some years after reforestation practice could be detected and monitored by applying the site index and 3D modeling method.

산불이 난 산림에서의 개미군집: 회복과정과 복원방법 (Ant Assemblages in a Burned Forest in South Korea: Recovery Process and Restoration Method)

  • 산불 후에 일어나는 개미군집의 변화양상을 파악하기 위해 산불이 난 산림에서 자연적으로 식생복원이 이루어진 곳, 인위적으로 조림한 곳, 산불이 나지 않은 곳의 3개 조사지에서 2005년부터 8년간 함정트랩으로 개미를 조사하였다. 모두 24종이 채집되었고 스미스개미(Nylanderia flavipes)가 가장 풍부하였다. 산림을 선호하는 개미종(예, 일본장다리개미, 민냄새개미, 노랑잘록개미)들은 산불이 나지 않은 조사지와 자연적으로 식생이 복원되는 조사지에서 많이 발생한 반면, 개활지를 선호하는 종(예, 곰개미, 일본왕개미, 주름개미)들은 인위적으로 조림된 곳에서 많이 나타났다. 다변량분석 결과는 인위적으로 조림된 곳이 자연적으로 식생이 복원된 곳 보다 개미군집이 산불 후에 더 많이 달라지는 것을 보여준다. 자연 복원된 조사지에서는 개미군집이 산불이 난 5-6년후에 산불 이전으로 회복되는 데 비해, 인공복원된 조사지에서는 회복에 약 25년이 소요될 것으로 추정되었다.

Effects of reforestation approaches, agroforestry and woodlot, on plant community composition, diversity and soil properties in Madhupur Sal forest, Bangladesh

  • Background: Increasing land demands for food production have led to biodiversity loss and land degradation in the Madhupur Sal forest. Reforestation activities such as agroforestry and woodlot plantation support the conservation of diversity, restoration of forest and prevention of soil erosion in degraded natural Sal forest. Knowing about these reforestation activities, this study is needed to compare the species composition, richness, and soil nutrients of these two plantation activities to the natural Sal forest in the degraded Madhupur Sal forest in Bangladesh. Results: The analysis showed that in between the reforestation activities, the highest Shannon-Wiener index (1.79), evenness (0.60) and Simpson's index (0.79) were found in the agroforestry site compared to the woodlot plantation site. On the contrary, the highest species richness (n = 14), tree basal area (19.56 m2 ha-1), Margalef's index (1.96) were recorded in woodlot plantation than in the agroforestry site. We observed that at 0-15 cm depth, soil organic matter (2.39%), total nitrogen (0.14%), available phosphorous (62.67 ㎍ g-1) and exchangeable potassium (0.36 meq/100 g) in agroforestry plots were significantly higher compared to other forest sites. At topsoil (15-30 cm depth), soil organic matter (1.67%) and available phosphorous (21.09 ㎍ g-1) were found to be higher in agroforestry site. Conclusions: Both reforestation approaches improved soil function, although woodlot plantation had the higher species richness. Therefore, plantation activities by the sustainable implementation of these two practices are the best alternative to restore the biodiversity, richness and conserve soil fertility in the Madhupur Sal forest of Bangladesh.

위성영상과 공간자료를 이용한 북한 지역의 재조림 CDM 대상지 선정 및 적지분석 방안 (Approach for Suitable Site Selection and Analysis for Reforestation CDM using Satellite Image and Spatial Data in North Korea)

  • 본 연구의 목적은 북한 지역을 대상으로 위성영상과 공간자료를 이용하여 재조림 CDM의 정의에 적합한 대상지 선정 방안을 제시하는데 있다. 재조림 CDM이 가능한 대상지는 1990년 이전부터 현재까지 산림이 아닌 지역으로 규정되어 있다. 연구대상지역은 북한 함흥 지역이며, 1988년 9월 27일 취득된 Landsat TM 영상과 2007년 9월 24일 취득된 SPOT Pan-sharpened 영상의 두시점 영상을 이용하였다. 두시점의 영상에 대해서 각각 영상분류를 실시하여 산림황폐지(무립목지, 개간산지, 산간나지)를 구분하였다. 그리고 두 영상분류 결과를 이용한 변화탐지 분석을 수행하여 잠재적인 재조림 CDM 대상지를 도출하였다. 영상분류 결과, 19년간 산림의 1,214 ha가 개간산지, 농경지 또는 산간나지로 변화된 것으로 분석되었다. 분석 결과, 2,245 ha가 재조림 CDM의 정의에 부합하는 것으로 나타났으며, 전체 잠재적 재조림 CDM 대상지 중 79.2%가 개간산지로 나타났다. 분석된 잠재적 재조림 CDM 대상지에 대하여 지형 및 접근성 분석을 통해 적합성 지수를 산출하였고 대상지를 적합성에 따라 등급화하여 사업우선 순위의 선정 등에 활용할 수 있도록 하였다.

Impacts of Reforestation on Stabilization of Riverine Water Levels in South Korea

  • We investigate how reforestation contributed to stabilization of riverine water levels in South Korea. For the purpose, we estimate an equation capturing dynamic relationships among rainfall, upstream-area tree stock, and downstream water levels in three river systems of Hongcheon, Mangyeong, and Hyeongsan, using daily observations of precipitation and water levels for the period from 1985 to 2005. Simulation based on estimation results shows that increase in the tree stock in a river basin leads to a significantly suppressed peaking in riverine water levels in response to an abrupt and concentrated rain in the upstream area. For instance, an hour-long concentration of 100mm rain results in 0.7m rise in water level if the volume of growing stock is 1 million m3, whereas the rise in water level stays below 0.27m with 5 million m3 in the growing-stock volume.

Exotic Mahogany Leaf Litter Hinders Growth of Philippine Native Tree Seedlings

  • With continuous decline of Philippine forest cover, sustainable forest management and restoration are essential to restore destroyed forest ecosystems. Unfortunately, of ten most planted trees in reforestation projects in the Philippines, eight are exotic species, with large leaf mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla) being the most dominant. In this study, effect of Swietenia macrophylla in reforestation projects on native tree species was evaluated. Effects of S. macrophylla leaf litter, frequency, and canopy closure on the growth of the Philippine native species Pterocarpus indicus were investigated. Results showed that S. macrophylla leaf litter significantly inhibited the growth of P. indicus seedlings based on root collar-to-shoot height. The standardized growth rate of seedlings in plots without S. macrophylla leaf litter was significantly higher than the growth rate of seedlings in plots with leaf litter. Furthermore, there was no significant difference in the standardized growth rate of seedlings between plots without leaf litter and a control plot. On the contrary, S. macrophylla tree frequency and canopy closure showed no significant effect. These results attest to the negative effect of widely planted S. macrophylla to a valuable Philippine native tree P. indicus. With accumulating scientific evidence about negative effects of S. macrophylla on native trees, discontinued use in tree planting and reforestation efforts with active management of restoration sites previously planted with large leaf mahogany are needed.

북한 산림복원 전략에 따른 탄소저장량 잠재성 평가 (Assessment of potential carbon storage in North Korea based on forest restoration strategies)

  • 본 연구는 북한의 과거 토지이용 변화의 경향성을 반영한 토지이용 변화 시나리오에 따라 2050년까지의 탄소저장량 변화를 평가하였다. 토지이용 변화 시나리오는 과거 시점의 상태로부터 현 상태를 예측할 수 있는 CA-Markov 모델링을 통해 구축하였으며, 이를 위해 북한 산림복원을 위한 대내·외 노력이 시도된 2010년 전후의 토지이용 공간정보를 통해 추정한 토지이용 유형별 변화 경향성을 활용하였다. 이를 통해 산림황폐화(non-reforestation)와 산림복원(reforestation) 시나리오를 마련하였으며, 토지이용 변화에 따른 북한 탄소저장량 변화를 평가하였다. 북한의 토지이용 유형별 탄소저장량은 우리나라를 대상으로 수행된 연구문헌 조사를 통해 도심지, 산림, 농경지, 초지, 나지의 지상부, 지하부, 토양, 기타 유기물에 대한 추정값을 적용하였다. 북한을 대상으로한 대내·외 산림복원 노력은 2050년의 탄소저장량을 2020년 대비 4.4% 증진시킬 수 있는 잠재력을 지닐 것으로 판단된다. 그러나 산림복원의 노력없이 황폐화가 지속된다면 2050년 탄소저장량은 2020년 대비 11.5% 감소할 것으로 예측되었다. 이에 따라 북한의 탄소저장량 증진을 위해서 대내·외의 지속적인 노력이 매우 중요할 것으로 판단된다. 따라서, 장기적으로 북한의 산림복원을 위한 노력과 협력을 추진됨에 있어 본 연구에서 제시하는 결과가 기여할 수 있길 기대한다.

Comparative Height Growth and Forest Structure of Fraxinus Spaethiana and Pterocarya Rhoifolia in Natural Reforestation Stands in Steep Valleys of Central Japan

  • Height-growth analysis was used to examine forest structure and compare Pterocarya rhoifolia and Fraxinus spaethiana growth characteristics within and between each species in two P. rhoifolia-dominant and two F. spaethiana established contemporaneously in the sere, species vertical stratification 25 years after stand initiation was such that P. rhoifolia dominated the overstory but F. spaethiana the understory, including that P. rhoifolia grew about 4 times more rapidly Similarly, F. spaethiana dominated the overstory but not the understory, in a stand where it established mainly by itself, 25 years after Initiation. However, comparing the two different stands, P. rhoifolia overstory heights were about two times greater than F. spaethiana. This suggests that in a disturbance regime, forest regeneration is affected by height-growth patterns such that P. rhoifolia's ability to achieverapid height growth allows it to dominate where lights growth allows it to dominate where light resources are continuously abundant.
