  • Prismatic reflective sheets were prepared using microprisms, and their retroreflection and structural properties were investigated and compared with encapsulated lens type reflective sheets based on glass beads. As prepared, the prismatic reflective sheets show well arranged array of microprisms. The arrangement of glass beads in encapsulated lens type reflective sheets is also found to be uniform without any cracks. However, during the coating process of the PET layer, the beads are coming out and the gaps are formed due to the application of high pressure. Even though the preparation method for reflective sheets based on microprisms is similar to that of reflective sheets based on glass beads, the method is relatively simple and cost effective, and also needs less time. Prismatic reflective sheets show higher coefficient of retroreflection from all entrance angles compared to reflective sheets based on glass beads. The results prove that the prismatic reflective sheets can be used for preparing the traffic sign boards to secure a clear view.

  • In this study, engineering grade and high intensity reflective sheets were prepared with glass beads and their reflection performance and physical properties were investigated. The reflective sheets prepared by using glass beads are divided into enclosed or encapsulated lens type, depending on whether the glass beads are open in air or not. Because of an extra layer on the glass bead surface, the enclosed lens type reflective sheets show very little change in the properties by bad weather conditions, compared to encapsulated lens type reflective sheets. Optimization of the amount of glass beads on the surface was carried out, which determines the retroreflective properties. Enclosed and encapsulated lens type reflective sheets with various colors were prepared and their coefficients of retroreflection were determined. The encapsulated type reflective sheet with white color shows a coefficient of retroreflection of $210.4cd/1x{\cdot}m^2$, which is higher than the enclosed type ($74cd/1x{\cdot}m^2$). Effect of washing on the reflective property and adhesive power of the reflective sheets was investigated, and it is found that the number of glass beads decreased with washing and the aluminum layer deposited was damaged extensively in the encapsulated lens type reflective sheets.

  • Determination of VLBI IVP (Very Long Baseline Interferometry Invariant Point) position with high accuracy is required to compute local tie vectors between the space geodetic techniques. In general, reflective targets are attached on VLBI antenna and slant distances, horizontal and vertical angles are measured from the pillars. Then, adjustment computation is performed by using the mathematical model which connects measurements and unknown parameters. This indicates that the accuracy of the estimated solutions is affected by the accuracy of the measurements. One of issues in local tie surveying, however, is that the reflective targets are not in favorable condition, that is, the reflective sheet target cannot be perfectly aligned to the instrument perpendicularly. Deviation from the line of sight of an instrument may cause different type of measurement errors. This inherent limitation may lead to incorrect stochastic modeling for the measurements in adjustment computation procedures. In this study, error characteristics by measurement types and pillars are analyzed, respectively. The analysis on the studentized residuals is performed after adjustment computation. The normality of the residuals is tested and then equal variance test between the measurement types are performed. The results show that there are differences in variance according to the measurement types. Differences in variance between distances and angle measurements are observed when F-test is performed for the measurements from each pillar. Therefore, more detailed stochastic modeling is required for optimal solutions, especially in local tie survey.

  • An application of innovative laser+GMA hybrid welding process is presented for reducing bead humping defects in high speed welding and increasing side wall fusion in narrow groove welding without torch or wire oscillation. In this hybrid process, the laser heat input is applied adjacent to the weld pool at a relatively low power density to produce a wider, flatter weld bead. In bead on plate in sheet metal gauges, the hybrid process was able to produce hump-free welds from 70ipm (${\sim}1780mm/min$) to over 150ipm (${\sim}3810mm/min$) of the travel speed compared to the un-assisted GMAW process. A square-butt joint in 15mm A572 Gr50 steel welds was investigated. A square butt joint with a gap of 3.2mm was filled with 6 passes. Liquid Nitrogen calorimetry and innovative $CO_2$ laser reflective optics were also developed to demonstrate the concept of hybrid welding.

  • We have developed new type of LCD Device which enables switching from reflective to tranmissive LCD mode and vice versa according to brightness of the surrounding. Alternation in these modes are possible by adding on circular polarized sheet and retardation film onto the bottom polarizer which allows the control of the back light and the LCD cell gamma voltage depending on the atmosphere. This method has been evaluated and confirmed by running on the LCD module device in which we have optimized retardation value by Poincare polarizer analysis.

  • Description and theory of spin coating technique has been elaborately outlined and a spin coating machine designed and fabricated using affordable components. The system was easily built with interdisciplinary knowledge of mechanics, fluid mechanics and electronics. This equipment employs majorly three basic components and two circuit units in its operation. These include a high speed dc motor, a proximity sensor mounted at a distance of about 15 mm from a reflective metal attached to the spindle of the motor to detect every passage of the reflective metal at its front and generate pulses. The pulses are transmitted to a micro-controller which process them into rotational speed (revolution per minute) and displays it on a lead crystal display (LCD) which is also a component of the micro-controller. The circuit units are a dc power supply unit and a PWM motor speed controlling unit. The various components and circuit units of this equipment are housed in a metal casing made of an 18 gauge black metal sheet designed with a total area of 1, $529.2cm^2$. To illustrate the use of the spin-coating system, ZnO sol-gel films were prepared and characterized using SEM, XRD, UV-vis, FT-IR and RBS and the result agrees well with that obtained from standard equipment and a speed of up to 9000 RPM has been achieved.

  • To compare an electrical and optical characteristics of indium tin oxide (ITO) and carbon nanotube (CNT) electrode on flexible and reflective display, we fabricate two charged particle-type display panels under the same panel condition of which the width of ribs is 10 ${\mu}m$, the cell size is $300{\mu}m{\times}300{\mu}m$, the q/m value of the white particles is -4.3 ${\mu}C/g$ and that for the black is +1.3 ${\mu}C/g$, and the cell gap is 75 ${\mu}m$, 125 ${\mu}m$, and 175 ${\mu}m$. We use plastic substrates coated with ITO and CNT electrode. To evaluate optical property, we measure a response time of particles using a laser and a photodiode. Threshold and driving voltages of CNT electrode according to the sheet resistance of 300, 600, 1,000 (ohm/sq) are compared with ITO electrode of 10 (ohm/sq). A response time of the CNT panel is similar to that of ITO panel, but the threshold and driving voltages of CNT panel are higher than that of ITO panel, inducing a large bombardment of the particles and shortening the lifetime of the panel. High difference of a threshold and a driving voltage of CNT panel will induce an particle clumping, resulting degradation of the panel. A bending radius of the fabricated CNT panel is 18 ${\mu}m$.

  • Materials exposed to outside will deteriorate due to various weathering factors such as sunlight, heat, temperature, humidity and so on. Therefore, predicting speed of degradation and life time is a very important issue. This research uses retro-reflective sheets with white and green which are most commonly used colors to conduct the outdoor exposure test and acceleration test of xenon arc in Arizona state in the United States, Chennai in India, Sanary in France and Seosan in Korea to measure the reflective performance of retro-reflection. The accelerated factor was obtained by using regression analysis through reflective values obtained from the acceleration test of xenon arc from Seosan area. Also, by using solar uv program, the accelerated factor of various climate regions were obtained and it was confirmed that the accelerated factor of Senary was 1.04, Arizona 1.82, Chennai 1.92 times higher than that of Seosan.
