The current study focused on the preparation of low-cost PVC-based adsorbing membrane. Metakaolin, as available adsorbent, was embedded into the PVC matrix via solution blending method. The as-prepared PVC/metakaolin mixed matrix membranes were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy (AFM), pure water permeability and contact angle measurements. The results confirmed the improvement of PWP and hydrophilicity due to the presence of metakaolin in the PVC matrix. Additionally the structure of PVC membrane was changed due to the incorporation of metakaolin in the polymer matrix. The static adsorption capacity of all samples was determined through dye removal. The effect of metakaolin dosage (0-7%) and pH (4, 8, 12) on dye adsorption capacity was investigated. The results depicted that the highest adsorption capacity was achieved at pH of 4 for all samples. Additionally, adsorption data were fitted on Langmuir, Freundlich, and Temkin models to determine the appropriate governing isotherm model. Finally, the dynamic adsorption capacity of the optimum PVC/metakaolin membrane was studied using dead-end filtration cell. The dye removal efficiency was determined for pure PVC and PVC/metakaolin membrane. The results demonstrated that PVC/metakaolin mixed matrix membrane had a high adsorption capacity for dye removal from aqueous solution.
Near Infrared spectroscopy was applied to the samples of processed pork to see the effect of grinding on chemical components analyses. Data from conventional chemical analyses of moisture, fat, protein, NaCl were put into calibration model by NIR of reflectance mode. The other properties observed were pH and color parameters ($L^*,\;a^*,\;b^*$). Spectral ranges of 400~2500 nm and 400~1100 nm were compared for color parameters. Spectral ranges of 400~2500 nm and 1100~2500 nm were compared for chemical components and pH. Different spectral ranges caused little changes in the coefficients of determination or standard errors. $R^{2,}s$ of calibration models for color parameters were in the range of 0.97 to 1.00. $R^{2,}s$ of calibration models of intact sausages for moisture, protein, fat, NaCl and pH were 0.98, 0.89, 0.95, 0.73 and 0.77, respectively using spectra at 1100~2500 nm. $R^{2,}s$ of calibration models of ground sausages for moisture, protein, fat, NaCl and pH were 0.97, 0.91, 0.97, 0.42 and 0.56, respectively using spectra at 1100~2500 nm.
The propagation of light radiation in a turbid medium is an important problem that confronts dosimetry of therapeutic laser delivery and the development of diagnostic spectroscopy. Scattered light is measured as a function of the position(distance r, depth z) between the axis of the incident beam and the detection spot. Turbid sample yields a very forward-directed scattering pattern at short range of position from source to detector, whereas the thicker samples greatly attenuated the on-axis intensity at long range of position. The portions of scattered light reflected from or transmitted throughphantom depend upon internal reflectance and absorption properties of the phantom. Monte Carlo simulation method for modelling light transport in tissue is applied. It uses the photon is moved a distance where it may be scattered, absorbed, propagated, internally reflected, or transmitted out of tissue. The photon is repeatedly moved until it either escape from or is absorbed by the phantom. In order to obtain an optimum therapeutic ratio in phantom material, optimum control the light energy fluence rate is essential. This study is to discuss the physical mechanisms determining the actual light dose in phantom. Permitting a qualitative understanding of the measurements. It may also aid in designing the best model for laser medicine and application of medical engineering.
Today, there are increasing evidences that daylight is essential for health, well-being and productivity. One of the strong contributions, which atria can make to advantages in building, is in allowing the use of daylight. This research is to develop nomographs and to evaluate the daylight performances of toplit atria with louvers. For this purpose, the evaluation models of toplit atria with well indexes of 0.5, 1.0 or 2.0 have been selected through the field surveys of atrium buildings in Seoul area. Also, weather data for solar irradiance and luminous efficacy were gathered from the recently conducted previous researches. The computer simulations were performed under clear sky conditions, using the ADELINE program, and various daylight performances were analyzed by the daylight illumination ratio. Analyzing the simulation results, solar altitude, solar azimuth, and louver angle and louver reflectance were found to be important factors affecting the daylight performance of toplit atria. Using these variables, regression equations have been formulated, and the nomographs, which may predict the daylight performances of toplit atria with louvers, were developed. The developed nomographs were validated through comparing the results of nomograph predictions to the results of scale-model experiments.

There is an increasing need to use data from different sensors in order to maximize the chances of obtaining a cloud-free image and to meet timely requirements for information. However, the use of data from multiple sensor systems is depending on comprehensive relationships between sensors of different types. Indeed, a study of inter-sensor relationships is well advanced in the effective use of remotely sensed data from multiple sensors. This paper was concerned with relationships between sensors of different types for vegetation indices (VI). The study was conducted using IKONOS and Landsat-7 ETM+ images. IKONOS and Landsat-7 ETM+ image of the same or about the same dates were acquired. The Landsat-7 ETM+ images were resampled in order to make them coincide with the pixel sizes of IKONOS. Inter-relationships of vegetation indices between images were performed using at-satellite reflectance obtained by converting image digital number (DN). All images were applied to topographic normalization method in order to reduce topographic effect in digital imagery. Also, Inter-sensor model equations between two sensors were developed and applied to other study region. In the result, the relational equations can be used to compute or interpret VI of one sensor using the VI of another sensor.
In the agricultural field, a machine vision system has been widely used to automate most inspection processes especially in quality grading. Though machine vision system was very effective in quantifying geometrical quality factors, it had a deficiency in quantifying color information. This study was conducted to evaluate color of beef using machine vision system. Though measuring color of a beef using machine vision system had an advantage of covering whole lean tissue area at a time compared to a colorimeter, it revealed the problem of sensitivity depending on the system components such as types of camera, lighting conditions, and so on. The effect of color balancing control of a camera was investigated and multi-layer BP neural network based color calibration process was developed. Color calibration network model was trained using reference color patches and showed the high correlation with L*a*b* coordinates of a colorimeter. The proposed calibration process showed the successful adaptability to various measurement environments such as different types of cameras and light sources. Compared results with the proposed calibration process and MLR based calibration were also presented. Color calibration network was also successfully applied to measure the color of the beef. However, it was suggested that reflectance properties of reference materials for calibration and test materials should be considered to achieve more accurate color measurement.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to non-destructively and quickly predict the capsaicinoid content of domestic red pepper powders from various areas of Korea using a pungency measurement system in combination with visible and near-infrared (VNIR) spectroscopic techniques. Methods: The reflectance spectra of 149 red pepper powder samples from 14 areas of Korea were obtained in the wavelength range of 450-950 nm and partial least squares regression (PLSR) models for the prediction of capsaicinoid content were developed using area models. Results: The determination coefficient of validation (RV2), standard error of prediction (SEP), and residual prediction deviation (RPD) for the capsaicinoid content prediction model for the Namyoungyang area were 0.985, ${\pm}2.17mg/100g$, and 7.94, respectively. Conclusions: These results show the possibility of VNIR spectroscopy combined with PLSR models in the non-destructive and facile prediction of capsaicinoid content of red pepper powders from Korea.
Monitoring of cyanobacteria bloom in reservoir systems is important for water managers responsible of water supply system. Cyanobacteria affect the taste and smell of water and pose considerable filtration problems at water use places. Harmful cyanobacteria bloom in reservoir have significant economic impacts. We develop a new method for estimating the cyanobacteria bloom using Landsat TM and ETM+ data. Developed model was calibrated and cross-validated with existing in situ measurements from Daecheong Reservoir's Water Quality Monitoring Program and Algae Alarm System. Measurements data of three stations taken from 2004 to 2012 were matched with radiometrically converted reflectance data from the Landsat TM and ETM+ sensor. Stepwise multiple linear regression was used to select wavelengths in the Landsat TM and ETM+ bands 1, 2 and 4 that were most significant for predicting cyanobacteria cell number and bio-volume. Based on statistical analysis, the linear models were that included visible band ratios slightly outperformed single band models. The final monitoring models captured the extents of cyanobacteria blooms throughout the 2004-2012 study period. The results serve as an added broad area monitoring tool for water resource managers and present new insight into the initiation and propagation of cyanobacteria blooms in Daecheong reservoir.
