A large cage system for the purpose of fishes farming in the open sea was influenced by various forces from the ocean environment. The deformation of the cage by these forces affects the safety of the cage itself, as well as that of the cultivated creatures. In this research, theoretical model was established to analyzing dynamic movement influenced by current for cage. Also, to increase the accuracy of calculations, the reduction ratio of flow speed acquired using the flume tank experiment. Applying the reduction ratio of flow speed to the numerical calculation, the calculation values were compared with the measured values in the flume tank experiment using cage model. The results were as follows ; 1. When the flow speed of the flume tank is fixed, the decrease of the velocity of flow which is passed the upper panel side is proportion to the increase of porosity ratio of netting. 2. When the porosity ratio is fixed, the increase of the velocity of flow which is passed the upper panel side is proportion to the increase of velocity of flow. 3. When the porosity ratio and the flow speed of the flume tank are fixed, the decrease of the velocity of flow which is passed the upper panel side is proportion to the increase of attack angle. 4. As a result of comparison between the underwater shape by simulation which is applying the reduction ratio of flow speed from the experiment using plane netting and that by model experiment, it was found out that the result of the simulation was very close to that of model gear within ${\pm}$ 5 % error range.
Flow around a small white fir tree was investigated with varying the length of the bottom trunk (hereafter referred to as bottom gap). The velocity fields around the tree, which was placed in a closed-type wind tunnel test section, were quantitatively measured using particle image velocimetry (PIV) technique. Three different flow regions are observed behind the tree due to the bottom gap effect. Each flow region exhibits a different flow structure as a function of the bottom gap ratio. Depending on the gap ratio, the aerodynamic porosity of the tree changes and the different turbulence structure is induced. As the gap ratio increases, the maximum turbulence intensity is increased as well. However, the location of the local maximum turbulence intensity is nearly invariant. These changes in the flow and turbulence structures around a tree due to the bottom gap variation significantly affect the shelter effect of the tree. The wind-speed reduction is increased and the height of the maximum wind-speed reduction is decreased, as the gap ratio decreases.
Flow through compliant tubes with linear taper in wall thickness is numerically simulated by finite element analysis. Two models are examined: a planar two-dimensional channel, and an axisymmetric tube. For verification of the numerical method, flow through a compliant stenotic vessel is simulated and compared to existing experimental data. Computational results for an axisymmetric tube show that as cross-sectional area falls with a reduction in downstream pressure, flow rate increases and reaches a maximum when the speed index (mean velocity divided by wave speed) is near unity at the point of minimum cross-section area, indicative of wave speed flow limitation or "choking" (flow speed equals wave speed) in previous one-dimensional studies. For further reductions in downstream pressure, flow rate decreases. Cross-sectional narrowing is significant but localized. When the ratio of downstream-to-upstream wall thickness is ${\le}$ 2 the area throat is located near the downstream end; as wall taper is increased to ${\ge}$ 3 the constriction moves to the upstream end of the tube. In the planar two-dimensional channel, area reduction and flow limitation are also observed when outlet pressure is decreased. In contrast to the axisymmetric case, however, the elastic wall in the two-dimensional channel forms a smooth concave surface with the area throat located near the mid-point of the elastic wall. Though flow rate reaches a maximum and then falls, the flow does not appear to be choked.
Open microcellular foams having small-sized cell and good mechanical properties are desirable for many practical applications. As an effort to reduce the cell size, the microcellular foams combining viscosity improvers into the conventional formulation of styrene and water system were prepared via high internal phase emulsion polymerization. Since the material properties of foam are closely related to the solution properties of emulsion state before polymerization, the flow behavior of emulsions was investigated using a controlled stress rheometer. The yield stress and the storage modulus increased as viscosity improver concentration and agitation speed increased, due to the reduced cell size reflecting both a competition between the continuous phase viscosity and the viscosity ratio and an increase of shear force. Appreciable tendency was found between the rheological data of emulsions and the cell sizes of polymerized foams. Cell size reduction with the concentration of viscosity improver could be explained by the relation between capillary number and viscosity ratio. A correlative study for the cell size reduction with agitation speed was also attempted and the result was in a good accordance with the hydrodynamic theory.

A cross-flow fan relatively produces higher dynamic pressure at low speed because a working fluid passes through an impeller blade twice and blades have a forward curved shape. The performance of a cross-flow fan is influenced 25% by the impeller, 60% by the rearguider and the stabilizer, and 15% by the heat exchanger. At the low flow rate, there exist a rapid pressure head reduction, a noise increase and an unsteady flow against a stabilizer and a rearguider. The purpose of this study is to investigate the reciprocal relation among each parameter Experiments are conducted to study the effects of a rearguider and a diameter ratio of impeller on the performance analysis of a cross-flow fan. Comparing with the rearguider of radial type, the Archimedes type shows excellent results for various diameter ratios.
An inappropriate evaluation of capacity leads to the incorrect and impractical result due to the transfer of error to the analysis and the evaluation on highway system. The traffic accident which reduces the capacity of road temporarily generates unpredictable congestion, causing difficulties in congestion management. Therefore, this research aims on the measurement of the capacity of the road in accordance to the speed at the accident which is a basic factor when performing analysis. Based on the given approach, the behavior of a vehicle in highway is understood to develop model of critical gap and model of maximum flow rate with respect to the speed of traffic flow. With the established model, the reduction rate of the capacity in highway system at the accident is measured. The result shows that the capacity is reduced by 37% when the speed of the traffic flow is 40km/h. Although the developed model can't be verified clearly, this research has shown that the reduction rate of the capacity in road system has a close relation to the speed.
Tornadoes are one of the world's deadliest natural phenomena. They are characterized by short life span and danger. It has been observed through post-damage surveys that localities with large numbers of buildings suffer major damage during a tornado attack resulting in huge loss of life and property. Thus,it is important to study interfering buildings exposed to tornado-like vortices. The present study focuses on external and internal pressures developed on building models exposed to translating tornado-like vortices in the presence of an interfering building model. The effects of translating speed and swirl ratio of a tornado-like vortex on external and internal pressures for a principal building in the vicinity of an interfering building are investigated. Results indicate that external and internal pressures are enhanced or reduced depending on the location of the interfering building with respect to the principal building.
In this paper, two types of porous burners with radial and axial flow have been modeled numerically and compared. For this purpose, governing equations were solved one-dimensionally for methane-air premix gas. The mechanism used in simulating combustion phenomenon was 15 stage reduced mechanism based on GRI3.0. In order to compare the two burners, the inlet flow rate and fuel-air ratio have been assumed equal for the two burners. The results of the study indicated that reduction in speed and increase in cross-section area in the direction of flow have a considerable influence on the behavior of radial burner in comparison to axial burner. Regarding temperature distribution inside the burner, it was observed that the two above mentioned factors can be influential in temperature of flame propagation region. Also, regarding distribution of CO and NO emission, the results indicate that the porous radial burner has lower emissions in comparison to the axial once. The output radiative heat transfer efficiency of the two burners was also compared and in this case also even the radial porous burner was found to be preferable.

Compression waves propagating in a high-speed railway tunnel develops large pressure fluctuations on the train body or tunnel structures. The pressure fluctuations would cause an ear discomfort for the passengers and increase the aerodynamic resistance of trains. As a fundamental research to resolve the pressure wave phenomenon in the tunnel, experiments were carried out by using a shock tube with an open end. A blockage to model trains inside the tunnel was installed on the lower wall of shock tube, thus forming a sudden cross-sectional area reduction. The compression waves were obtained by the fast opening gate valve instead of a conventional diaphragm of shock tube and measured by the flush mounted pressure transducers with a high sensitivity. The experimental results were compared with the previous theoretical analyses. The results show that the ratio of the reflected to the incident compression wave at the sudden cross-sectional area reduction increases but the ratio of the passing to the incident compression wave decreases, as the incident compression wave becomes stronger. This experimental results are in good agreements with the previous theoretical ones. The maximum pressure gradient of the compression wave abruptly increases but the width of the wave front does not vary, as it passes over the sudden cross-sectional area reduction.

This paper investigates a fast, accurate and inexpensive hydraulic motor speed control system using high speed on-off solenoid valves. In order to retain the advantages of the two position valve and obtain better performance, the valves are operated by pulse width modulation(PWM) control. PWM signal is generated from a LabWIEW program in microcomputer in order to set up various duty ratio and frequency of carrier wave in PWM signal with varying system parameters. As the results of experiments, the speed control of a hydraulic motor was successfully implemented using on-off solenoid valves. In order to attenuate the pressure ripple and speed variation due to discontinuously controlled flow through the on-off valves, a resonator hose fabricated for automobile power steering system was connected between the valve and a hydraulic motor. From experimental results obtained in the hydraulic motor system with a resonator hose, it was ascertained that the resonator hose showed excellent performances in reducing pressure ripple and motor speed variation.
