Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) method has been used to investigate the axial force of automotive water pump. As the excessive axial force can make some unexpected problems like impeller interference and coolant leakage we have focused on finding the cause of axial force and its reduction in this paper. First, we have tested the closed type water pump with and without balance hole by the calculation methods. By examining the pressure contour around the impeller, we have found that the axial force arises not only from the pressure difference around shroud but also from the pressure difference around hub. So we have tested two impellers - one is normal open type impeller and the other is open type impeller with modified hub. The results show that the axial force reduction is about 150~200N for normal one and 700N@3000RPM for modified impeller. And the hydraulic efficiency which is important in aspect of engine fuel efficiency is reduced about 6.5% for normal one but increased 4%@3000RPM for modified impeller.
The fatigue test under the constant amplitude repeated loading is performed to investigate the fatigue behavior of the Torque Shear type high tension bolted joint which is able to manage the axial force uniformly. From the test results, it's known that the reduction of the axial force of T/S bolt followed by the elasped time is similar to that of the high tension bolts. The difference of relaxation is not occurred according to the position of bolts, the size of the introduced axial force but the effect of the variation of temperature is large. In the reduction of the axial force followed by the cumulation of the fatigue load, the outer bolt is larger than the inner bolt. This result depends on the difference in the distribution of the non-slip zone. The variation of the surface roughness affects the slip and the reduction of the anal force.
Previous studies have suggested the maximum experimental story shear force of beam-column joint frame does not reach its theoretical value due to beam-column joint failure when the column-to-beam moment capacity ratio was close to 1.0. It was also pointed out that under a certain amount of axial force, an axial collapse and a sudden decrease of lateral load-carrying capacity may occur at the joint. Although increasing joint transverse reinforcement could improve the lateral load-carrying capacity and axial load-carrying capacity of beam-column joint frame, the conditions considering varying axial force were still not well investigated. For this purpose, 7 full-scale specimens with no-axial force and 14 half-scale specimens with varying axial force are designed and subjected to static loading tests. Comparing the experimental results of the two types of specimens, it has indicated that introducing the varying axial force leads to a reduction of the required joint transverse reinforcement ratio which can avoid the beam-column joint failure. For specimens with varying axial force, to prevent beam-column joint failure and axial collapse, the lower limit of joint transverse reinforcement ratio is acquired when given a column-to-beam moment capacity ratio.
Current design code states that the strength reduction factor shall be permitted to be increased linearly from that for axial compression to that for flexure as the design axial load strength $\Phi$cPn decrease from 0.1fckAg to zero. Since this empirically adopted axial load level of $\Phi$cPn=0.1fckAg considers only sectional area and concrete strength, the other variables such as steel ratio, steel yielding strength, and steel arrangement can not be considered. This research is performed to investigate the consistency and the rationality of the code requirement for determination of column design strength. A nonlinear axial force-moment-curvature analysis was conducted in order to investigate the ductility of reinforced concrete column sections. As the result of ductility analysis, it was found that the ductility at the axial force of $\Phi$cPn=0.1fckAg represented a lock of consistency for the various variable contained sections. Therefore, a more reasonable application method of strength reduction factor is proposed, that is based on the strain ductility index.
PURPOSE. The purpose of this study was to compare computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) abutment and prefabricated abutment in Morse taper internal connection type implants after cyclic loading. MATERIALS AND METHODS. The study was conducted with internal type implants of two different manufacturers (Group Os, De). Fourteen assemblies were prepared for each manufacturer group and divided into 2 groups (n=7): prefabricated abutments (Os-P, De-P) and CAD/CAM abutments (Os-C, De-C). The amount of axial displacement and the removal torque values (RTVs) were measured before and after cyclic loading (106 cycles, 3 Hz with 150 N), and the tensile removal force to dislodge the abutments was measured after cyclic loading. A repeated measures ANOVA and a pattern analysis based on the logarithmic regression model were conducted to evaluate the effect of cyclic loading on the axial displacement. The Wilcoxon signed-rank test and the Mann-Whitney test was conducted for comparison of RTV reduction% and tensile removal forces. RESULTS. There was no significant difference between CAD/CAM abutments and prefabricated abutments in axial displacement and tensile removal force; however, significantly greater RTV reduction% after cyclic loading was observed in CAD/CAM abutments. The correlation among the axial displacement, the RTV, and the tensile removal force was not significant. CONCLUSION. The use of CAD/CAM abutment did not significantly affect the amount of axial displacement and tensile removal force, but presented a significantly greater removal torque reduction% than prefabricated abutments. The connection stability due to the friction at the abutment-implant interface of CAD/CAM abutments may not be different from prefabricated abutment.
A composite element method (CEM) is presented to analyze the free and forced vibrations of a cracked Euler-Bernoulli beam with axial force. The cracks are introduced by using Christides and Barr crack model with an adjustment on one crack parameter. The effects of the cracks and axial force on the reduction of natural frequencies and the dynamic responses of the beam are investigated. The time response sensitivities with respect to the crack parameters (i.e., crack location, crack depth) and the axial force are calculated. The natural frequencies obtained from the proposed method are compared with the analytical results in the literature, and good agreement is found. This study shows that the cracks in the beam may have significant effects on the dynamic responses of the beam. In the inverse problem, a response sensitivity-based model updating method is proposed to identify both a single crack and multiple cracks from measured dynamic responses. The cracks can be identified successfully even using simulated noisy acceleration responses.
The characteristics of amplitudes and power spectra of X axial, Y axial, and RZ axial (i.e., body axis) wind forces on a 492 m high-rise building with a section varying along height in typical wind directions are studied via a rigid model wind tunnel test of pressure measurement. Then the corresponding mathematical expressions of power spectra of X axial (across-wind), Y axial (along-wind) and torsional wind forces in $315^{\circ}$ wind directions are proposed. The investigation shows that the mathematical expressions of wind force spectra of the main structure in across-wind and torsional directions can be constructed by the superimposition of an modified wind spectrum function and a peak function caused by turbulent flow and vortex shedding, respectively. While that in along-wind direction can only be constructed by the former and is similar to wind spectrum. Moreover, the fitted parameters of the wind load spectra of each measurement level of altitude are summarized, and the unified parametric results are obtained. The comparisons of the first three order generalized force spectra show that the proposed mathematical expressions accord with the experimental results well.
The characteristics of the coherence functions of X axial, Y axial, and RZ axial (i.e., body axis) wind forces on the Shanghai World Trade Centre - a 492 m super-tall building with section varying along height are studied via a synchronous multi-pressure measurement of the rigid model in wind tunnel simulating of the turbulent, and the corresponding mathematical expressions are proposed there from. The investigations show that the mathematical expressions of coherence functions in across-wind and torsional-wind directions can be constructed by superimposition of a modified exponential decay function and a peak function caused by turbulent flow and vortex shedding respectively, while that in along-wind direction need only be constructed by the former, similar to that of wind speed. Moreover, an inductive analysis method is proposed to summarize the fitted parameters of the wind force coherence functions of every two measurement levels of altitudes. The comparisons of the first three order generalized force spectra show that the proposed mathematical expressions accord with the experimental results well. Later, the influences of coherence functions on wind-induced dynamic responses are analyzed in detail based on the proposed mathematical expressions and the frequency-domain method of random vibration theory.

Various kinds of winding arrangements can be used to enable fault current limiters (FCL) to tolerate higher forces without resulting in a substantial increase in construction and fabrication costs. In this paper, a distributed winding arrangement is investigated in terms of its effects on the short-circuit forces in a three-phase FCL. The force magnitudes of the AC supplied windings are calculated by employing a finite element-based model in the time stepping procedure. The leakage flux and radial and axial force magnitudes obtained from the simulation are compared to those obtained from a conventional winding arrangement. The comparison shows that the distributed winding arrangement significantly reduces the radial and, especially, the axial force magnitudes.
Functionally graded material (FGM) illustrates a novel class of composites that consists of a graded pattern of material composition. FGM is engineered to have a continuously varying spatial composition profile. Current work focused on buckling analysis of beam made of stepwise linear and quadratic graded material in axial direction subjected to axial span-load with piecewise function and rested on shear layer based on classical beam theory. The various boundary and natural conditions including simply supported (S-S), pinned - clamped (P-C), axial hinge - pinned (AH-P), axial hinge - clamped (AH-C), pinned - shear hinge (P-SHH), pinned - shear force released (P-SHR), axial hinge - shear force released (AH-SHR) and axial hinge - shear hinge (AH-SHH) are considered. To the best of the author's knowledge, buckling behavior of this kind of Euler-Bernoulli beams has not been studied yet. The equilibrium differential equation is derived by minimizing total potential energy via variational calculus and solved analytically. The boundary conditions, natural conditions and deformation continuity at concentrated load insertion point are expressed in matrix form and nontrivial solution is employed to calculate first buckling loads and corresponding mode shapes. By increasing truncation order, the relative error reduction and convergence of solution are observed. Fast convergence and good compatibility with various conditions are advantages of the proposed method. A MATLAB code is provided in appendix to employ the numerical procedure based on proposed method.
