To investigate the effects of dietary phytate reduction and zinc supplementation on biochemical iron parameters in elderly Korean women consuming inadequate iron, fifteen healthy women aged 64-75 years were recruited for a feeding study. A high-phytate diet (27.8 phytate:zinc molar ratio) was provided for 9 days, followed by a nine-day low-phytate diet(12.3) and a subsequent 28-day period of unregulated meals with zinc supplementation (22 mg/d as zinc gluconate). Serum iron increased significantly with the low-phytate diet (130.4 $\mu g$/L) but returned to the level observed during the high-phytate diet (113.0 $\mu g$ /L) period when subjects were taking zinc supplements (105.8 $\mu g$ /L). However, serum ferritin in the subjects decreased significantly with the low-phytate diet (73.8 $\mu g$ /L) as well as with zinc supplementation (57.2 $\mu g$ /L), compared to levels following consumption of the high-phytate diet (89.6 $\mu g$ /L). Transferrin receptor and transferrin saturation were unchanged with the treatments. In summary, zinc supplementation might result in deteriorated iron status in elderly Korean women who consume inadequate iron, while there was no significant effect from reducing dietary phytate.
Microstructures and nonmetallic inclusions of five forged iron axes and one cast iron axe were analyzed. The axes were excavated from the Proto-Three Kingdom Period site located in Yangchon, Gimpo. The forging objects were made of almost pure iron and low carbon steel, and only one among five were quenched after its figuration. Malleable cast iron structures showing on the casting suggest that the decarbonized casting method were applied. According to the results of nonmetallic inclusion analysis, the axes were produced by hammering the iron bloom which was attained with low-temperature -solid-reduction-method. Showing higher Fe content over $SiO_2$, it is assumed that the re-collecting rate of Fe was low because of the insufficient forging temperature and the impurities were included during the smelting process. It is assumed that the lime was used as a preparation because of detecting high Ca contents.
Earth outer core is composed of iron mainly with some diluent elements, which account for the observed ca. 10% density deficit compared to the pure iron. Among candidates as the light diluents, hydrogen and oxygen were selected, and the thermodynamic stability of the following reaction was calculated; hematite + hydrogen $\to$ goethite + iron. At ambient conditions, Gibb's free energy of this reaction is 12.62 kJ/mol. On increasing pressure at room temperature, it decreases to zero at 0.068 GPa. This energy decreases at constant rate down to 200 GPa, which shows -208.26 kJ/mol at that pressure. From these results, this chemical reaction prefers the reduction environment forming the iron element and iron oxyhydroxide, so possible presence of iron oxyhydroxide with iron at proto-core can not be ruled out.
Aluminum cast iron has excellent oxidation resistance and good resistance to sulfide and corrosion. Compared to Ti and Ni alloys, it is expected to be a substitute material for structural materials and stainless steels because it is relatively inexpensive to use Fe, which is a non-strategic element. This results in a weight reduction effect of about 30% as compared to the use of stainless steel. With regard to aluminum as an alloying material, it is an element that has been widely used for the alloying of cast iron in recent years. Practical use has been delayed owing to the resulting lack of ductility at room temperature and the sharp decrease in the strength above 600℃ of this alloy, however. The cause of the weak room temperature ductility is known to be environmental embrittlement by hydrogen, and the addition of various alloying elements has been attempted in order to mitigate these shortcomings. Although alloying elements such as vanadium, chromium, and manganese are mainly used to increase the hardness and wear resistance of gray cast iron, the price of finished products containing these elements and the problems associated with alloys with this material impose many limitations.
To satisfy the more severe emission regulation and the demand of higher fuel economy in near future, the combustion pressure and power output of engines is going to be higher. In order to get the reduction of engine emission and the higher power, it is needed the reduction of the tension and width of ring pack. The lower tension ring and the manufacturing technology of cast iron thinner width ring can bring the friction reduction between the ring and liner during engine running. Therfore, the fuel economy can be achieved. Thereafter the engine emission can be reduced. In this study, by using a developed basic computer program that predicts the inter-ring pressure, the motion of ring and the inter-ring pressure through a crevice volume model between adjacent rings, and the oil film thickness and the friction computed by lubrication theories, it is to be examined the effect of friction reduction from piston ring pack equipped with thinner width ring and lower tension ring.

Temperature programmed reduction experiments for Fe- and Co-oxides were performed and weight losses were carefully measured to calculate the extent of reduction. Addition of nickel and palladium affected the reduction by lowering the DTG peak temperature. Reduction experiments for the oxides on alumina were also studied and the effect of nickel and palladium addition was confirmed. And that was explained by means of increased adsorption of hydrogen and increased diffusion ability of the surface hydrogen.

The effect of silica(fumed) on nitrate reduction by zero-valent iron(ZVI) was studied using batch experiment. The reduction of nitrate was tested in three different aqueous media including de-ionized water, artificial groundwater and real groundwater contaminated by nitrate. Kinetics of nitrate reduction in groundwater were faster than those in de-ionized water, and first-order rate constant($k_{obs}$) of ZVI/silica(fumed) process was about 2.5 time greater than that of ZVI process in groundwater. Amendment of Silica(fumed) also decreased ammonium presumably through adsorption on silica surface. The pHs in all processes increased due to oxidation of ZVI, but the increase was lower in groundwater due to buffering capacity of groundwater. The result also showed amount of reduced nitrate increased as initial nitrate concentration increased in groundwater. Separate adsorption isotherm experiments indicated that fumed silica itself had some degree of adsorption capacity for ammonium. The overall results indicated that silica(fumed) might be a promising material for enhancing nitrate reduction by ZVI.
Naturally-occurring iron minerals, goethite and magnetite, were used to catalyze hydrogen peroxide and initiate Fenton-like oxidation of silica sand contaminated with diesel, kerosene in batch systems. Reaction conditions were investigated by varying H$_2$0$_2$concentration(0%, 1%, 15%), initial contaminant concentration(0.2, 0.5, 1.0g diesel and kerosene/kg soil), and iron minerals(1, 5wt% magnetite or goethite). Contaminant degradations in silica sand-iron mineral-$H_2O$$_2$ systems were identified by determining total petroleum hydrocarbon(TPH) concentration. In case of silica sand contaminated with diesel(1g contaminan/kg soil with 5wt% magnetite) addition of 0%, 1%, 15% of $H_2O$$_2$showed 0%, 25%, and 60% of TPH reduction in 8 days, respectively When the mineral contents were varied from 1 to 5wt%, removal of contaminants increased by 16% for magnetite and 13.1% for goethite. The results from system contaminated by kerosene were similar to those of the diesel. Reaction of magnetite system was more aggressive than that of goethite system due to dissolution of iron and presence of iron(II) and iron(III); however, dissolved iron precipitated on the surface of iron mineral and seemed to cause reducing electron transfer activity on the surface and quenching $H_2$$O_2$. The system used goethite has better treatment efficiency due to less $H_2$$O_2$ consumption. Results of this study showed possible application of catalyzed $H_2$$O_2$ system to petroleum contaminated site without addition of iron source since natural soils generally contain iron minerals such as magnetite and goethite.

Nanoscale zero valent ion (nZVI) technology is emerging as an innovative method to treat contaminated groundwater. The activity of nZVI is very high due to their high specific surface area, and supporting this material can help to preserve its chemical nature by inhibiting oxidation. In this study, nZVI particles were attached to granular ion-exchange resin through borohydride reduction of ferrous ions, and chemical reduction of nitrate by this material was investigated as a potential technology to remove nitrate from groundwater. The pore structure and physical characteristics were measured and the change by the adsorption of nZVI was discussed. Batch tests were conducted to characterize the activity of the supported nZVI and the results indicated that the degradation of nitrate appeared to be a pseudo first-order reaction with the observed reaction rate constant of $0.425h^{-1}$ without pH control. The reduction process continued but at a much lower rate with a rate constant of $0.044h^{-1}$, which is likely limited by mass transfer. To assess the effects of other ions commonly found in groundwater, the same experiments were conducted in simulated groundwater with the same level of nitrate. In simulated groundwater, the rate constant was $0.078h^{-1}$ and it also reduced to $0.0021h^{-1}$ in later phase. The major limitation in application of ZVI for nitrate reduction is ammonium production. By using a support material with ion exchange capacity, the problem of ammonium release can be solved. The ammonium was not detected in the batch test, even when other competitive ions such as calcium and potassium existed.
To investigate the characteristics of phases formed in iron carbides, super iron carbide was synthesized from hematite fines with $CO-H_2$ gas mixture after reduction under $H_2$ gas at $600^{\circ}C$. Before carburization, the surface of iron powder reduced was pre-treated in the atmosphere of 0.05 vol% $NH_3$-Ar. The synthesized iron carbides were comprehensively explored by C/S analyzer(Low C/S determinator), M$\"{o}$ssbauer spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction patterns(XRD), scanning electron microscopy(SEM), transmission electron microscopy(TEM), and Raman spectroscopy at various reaction time of 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, and 35 min, respectively. By adding a small amount of $NH_3$ gas, the super iron carbides containing 10 wt% carbon were synthesized, and its addition stabilized iron carbides. It was found that the $NH_3$ treatment played a major role in the formation of iron carbide without decomposition($Fe_3C{\to}$3Fe+C) of iron carbides and precipitation of free carbon. It also succeed to synthesize super iron carbide, $Fe_5C_2$, as a stable single phase without involving Fe and $Fe_3C$ phases.
