  • The partial product matrix (PPM) of a parallel squarer is symmetric. To reduce the depth of PPM, it can be folded, shifted and rearranged. In this paper, we present an area-efficient squarer design method using new partial product rearrangement. Also, a fixed-width squarer design method of the proposed squarer is presented. By simulations, it is shown that the proposed squarers lead to up to 17% reduction in area, 10% reduction in propagation delay and 10% reduction in power consumption compared with previous squarers. By using the proposed fixed-width squarers, the area, propagation delay and power consumption can be further reduced up to 30%, 16% and 28%, respectively.

  • National Emergency Management Agency is planning a flood disaster mitigation system in urban area. This research is about analysis of runoff reduction efficiency of the alloted detention system which is one of flood disaster mitigation systems in urban area. The alloted detention system is composed of small to middle size detention facilities located in up and middle stream of urban basin. To analyze runoff reduction efficiency of alloted detention system, basic runoff analysis in test area has been carried out and runoff characteristics with size and locations of detention facilities has been simulated. The results of simulation are showing that alloted detention system can reduce the discharge of main stream and detention facilities' size and locations are major parameters of runoff reduction efficiency. It is concluded that alloted detention system can be a useful method in urban area's flood disaster mitigation and can secure safety against flood damages in urban areas.

  • This study was performed to prepare the quantitative method of judging the sensitive prognosis of chronic apical periodontitis as early as possible. The subjects were 25 cases with periapical radiolucencies of which were treated with endodontic treatment. Serial radiographs were taken by standardized method longitudinally. The density slice function of digital radiographic system were employed for quantitative and longitudinal assessment of the radiolucent area and the condensing osteitis simultaneously. Obtained results were as follows: 1. The amount of bone repair after endodontic treatment could be detected quantitatively by the density slice function of digital radiographic system. 2. Within the 6-week period after root canal filling, the prognosis could be evaluated by assessment both radiolucent area and condensing osteitis on digital radiographic system. 3. The pattern of bone repair showed peripheral type in most cases from the 6th week after root canal filling. 4. In longitudinal change, bone repair showed two patterns; the succeeding reduction of radiolucent area showing the increase of condensing osteitis in size till 6th week and following by static state or reduction tendency and the reduction following the initial increase of both areas. 5. Cases with pulpitis by trauma showed initial increase of condensing osteitis at 2nd week, marked reduction of radiolucent area and condensing osteitis at 6th week, and approximately normal bone state at 8th week after root canal filling.

  • Infection with rice blast fungus (Magnaporthe grisea) significantly reduced foliar net photosynthesis (A) of rice cultivars: Ilpoom, Hwasung, and Choochung in greenhouse experiments. By measuring the amount of diseased leaf area with a computer image analysis system, the relation between disease severity (DS) and net photosynthetic rate was curvilinearly correlated (r=0.679). Diseased leaves with 35% blast symptom can be predicted to have a 50% reduction of photosynthesis. The disease severity was linearly correlated (r=0.478) with total chlorophyll (chlorophyll a and chlorophyll b) per unit leaf area(TC). Light use efficiency was reduced by the fungal infection according to the light response curves. However, dark respiration (Rd) did not change after the fungal infection (p=0.526). Since the percent of reduction in photosynthesis greatly exceeded the percent of leaf area covered by blast lesions, loss of photosynthetic tissue on an area basis could not by itself account for the reduced photosynthesis. Quantitative photosynthetic reduction can be partially explained by decreasing TC, but cannot be explained by decreasing Rd. By photosynthesis (A)-internal CO$_2$ concentration (C$_i$ curve analysis, it was suggested that the fungal infection reduced ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco) activity, ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate (RuBP) regeneration, and inorganic phosphate regeneration. Thus, the reduction of photosynthesis by blast infection was associated with decreased TC and biochemical capacity, which comprises all carbon metabolism after CO$_2$ enters through the stomata.

  • Vestibular compensation is a recovery process from vestibular symptoms over time after unilateral loss of peripheral vestibular end organs. The aim of the present study was to observe time-dependent changes in long-term potentiation (LTP) at Schaffer collateral-CA1 synapses in the CA1 area of the hippocampus during vestibular compensation. The input-output (I/O) relationships of fEPSP amplitudes and LTP induced by theta burst stimulation to Schaffer's collateral commissural fibers were evaluated from the CA1 area of hippocampal slices at 1 day, 1 week, and 1 month after unilateral labyrinthectomy (UL). The I/O relationships of fEPSPs in the CA1 area was significantly reduced within 1 week post-op and then showed a non-significant reduction at 1 month after UL. Compared with sham-operated animals, there was a significant reduction of LTP induction in the hippocampus at 1 day and 1 week after UL. However, LTP induction levels in the CA1 area of the hippocampus also returned to those of sham-operated animals 1 month following UL. These data suggest that unilateral injury of the peripheral vestibular end organs results in a transient deficit in synaptic plasticity in the CA1 hippocampal area at acute stages of vestibular compensation.

  • In this paper, an optimal approach for the wide-area regulation of control devices in a transmission network is proposed. In order to realize an improved voltage profile and reduced power loss, existing devices such as tap-changing transformers, synchronous machines, and capacitor banks should be controlled in a coordinated and on-line manner. It is well-understood that phasor measurement units in transmission substations allow the system operators to access the on-line loading and operation status of the network. Accordingly, this study proposes efficient software applications that can be employed in area operation centers. Thus, the implanted control devices can be regulated in an on-line and wide-area coordinated approach. In this process, efficient objective functions are devised for both voltage profile improvement and power loss reduction. Subsequently, sensitivity analysis is carried out to determine the best weighting factors for these objectives. Extensive numerical studies are conducted on an IEEE 14-bus test system and a real-world system named the Azarbayjan Regional Transmission Network. The obtained results are discussed in detail to highlight the promising improvements.

  • The comer filling in shaped drawing process is an important characteristic, unlike the round drawing. It has also influence on the dimensional accuracy of the product. In this study, therefore, the shaped drawing process has been simulated by the three dimensional rigid-plastic finite element method in order to investigate the effect of process variables such as reduction in area and semi-die angle to the corner filling. The artificial neural network has also been introduced to reduce the number of simulations. To verify the results of simulations, experiments have been performed on the real industrial products. According to the results, the main process variable on the corner filling is the combination of semi-die angle in the irregular shaped drawing processes, but in the case of regular shaped drawing processes, reduction in area has great influence on the corner filling.

  • This study examined how to determine the optimal sediment level in dam reservoir for efficient plan and operation of dam. Currently, Korea is applying a horizontally accumulated method for sediment level estimation for the safety design of dam and so the method estimated relatively higher level than others. However, the sediment level of dam reservoir should be accurately estimated because it is an important factor in assessing life cycle of a dam. The sediment level in dam reservoir can be determined by SED-2D model linked with RMA-2, horizontally accumulated method, area increment method, and empirical area reduction method. The estimated sediment level from each method was compared with the observed sediment level measured in 2007 in Imha dam reservoir, Korea and then the optimal method was determined. Also, the future sediment level was predicted by each method for the future trend analysis of sediment level. As the results, the most accurate sediment level was estimated by the empirical area reduction method and the future trend of sediment level variation followed the past trend. Therefore, we have found that the empirical area reduction method is a proper one for more accurate estimation of sediment level and it can be validated by the results from a numerical model of SED-2D linked with RMA-2 model.

  • A distributed hydrologic model of an urban drainage area on Bugok drainage area in Oncheon stream was developed and combined with a optimization method to determine the optimal location and number of best management practices (BMPs) for storm water runoff reduction. This model is based on the SCS-CN method and integrated with a distributed hydrologic network model of the drainage area using system of 4,211 hydrologic response units (HRUs). Optimal location is found by locating HRU combination that leads to a maximum reduction in peak flow at the drainage outlet in this model. The results of this study indicate the optimal locations and numbers of BMPs, however, for more exact application of this model, project cost and SCS-CN reduction rate of structural facilities such infiltration trench and pervious pavement will have to be considered.

  • Structure and their redox property of the vanadium oxides prepared by decomposing NH₄VO₃ at various temperatures were studied by XRD, SEM, XPS, and temperature programmed reduction/temperature programmed oxidation (TPR/TPO) experiment. All TPR profiles have two sharp peaks in the temperature range 650-750℃, and the area ratio of the two sharp peaks changed from sample to sample. There were three redox steps in TPR/TPO profiles. The oxidation proceeded in the reverse order of the reduction process, and both the reactions proceeded via quite a stable intermediates. The changes of the morphological factor $(I_{(101)}/I_{(010)})$, the ratio of $O_{1S}$ peak area (O$_{1S}$( α)/O$_{1S}$( β)) in the XPS results, and the ratio of hydrogen consumption in TPR profiles with various vanadium oxides showed the distinct relationship between the structural property and their redox property of vanadium oxides. The change of the specific yield of phthalic anhydride with various vanadium oxides showed a very similar trend to those of the peak area ratio in TPR profiles, which meant that the first reduction step related to the partial oxidation of o-xylene on the vanadium oxide catalyst.
