Characteristic of Tantalum Powder and Effect of Reaction Temperature on the amount of Diluent (희석제량에 따른 탄탈륨 분말 특성 및 반응온도의 영향)

  • Pure tantalum powder has been produced by combining Na as a reducing agent, $K_2TaF_{7}$ as feed material, KCl and KF as a diluent in a stainless steel(SUS) bomb, using the method of metallothermic reduction. The present study investigated the effect of the amount of the diluent and reaction temperature on the characteristics of tantalum powder in the production process. The temperature applied in this study $850^{\circ}C$ and the amount of the additional reductant from +5% of the theoretical amount used for the reduction of the entire $K_2TaF_{7}$. The results showed that as the amount of the diluent increased, the reaction temperature became lower because the diluent prevented a temperature rise. Also, according to the mixture ratio of the feed materials and the diluent changed from 1 : 0.25 to 1 : 2, the particle size decreased from $5\mutextrm{m}$ to $1\mutextrm{m}$ and a particle size distribution which is below 325 mesh in fined powder increases from 71% to 83%. The average size of Tantalum powder, $2-4\mutextrm{m}$, was close to that of the commercial powders($2-5\mutextrm{m}$). Also under this condition, impurities contained in the powder were within the range allowed for the commercial Ta powders.

  • The chemical fractions of phosphorus were investigated in the soils of reclaimed and natural tidelands of southwest coastal area of Korea. The content of total-P varied to ranged from 322 to 614 mg/kg dry weight with a mean value of 467 mg/kg. The order of different fractions of phosphorus in reclaimed tideland soils was as follows: 1) inorganic phosphorus: Ca-P > Fe-P > Al-P > reductant soluble Fe-P. 2) organic phosphorus: Inositol-P > nucleic acid-P > phospholipid-P. The content of Al-P showed negative correlation with organic matter content but showed positive correlation with pH. The content of Fe-P showed negative correlation with clay mineral content but showed positive correlation with organic matter content. Reductant soluble Fe-P and Ca-P were no correlation with soil properties. The content of inositol-P showed highly positive correlation with clay mineral, organic matter content, and CEC.

Production of Fine Tantalum Powder by Electronically Mediated Reaction (EMR) (도전체 매개반응(EMR)법에 의한 미세 Ta 분말 제조)

  • Production of fine tantalum powder by calciothermic reduction of tantalum oxides ($Ta_{2}O_5$) pellet through an electronically mediated reaction (EMR) has been investigated. $Ta_{2}O_5$ pellet feed and reductant calcium-nickel (Ca-Ni) alloy were charged into electronically isolated locations in a molten $CaCl_2$ bath. The current flow through an external path between the feed (cathode) and reductant (anode) locations was monitored. The current approximately 4.7A was measured during the reaction in the external circuit connecting cathode and anode location. Tantalum powder with approximately 99 $mass\%$ purity was readily obtained after each experiment. Tantalum powder by EMR using $Ta_{2}O_5$ pellet feed was fine compared with that of metal powder by metallothermic reduction and EMR using $Ta_{2}O_5$ powder feed.

Effect of Atomization Characteristics of Twin Fluid Nozzle on Urea Pyrolysis (이유체 노즐 미립화 특성이 요소 열분해에 미치는 영향)

  • Recently, there has been rising interest in applying urea-SCR systems to large marine diesel engines because the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has decided to enforce NOx reduction regulations. Generally, in the case of urea-SCR of the marine diesel engine, a type of twin fluid atomizer has been using for injection of the urea solution. This study conducted to investigate an effect of the atomization of external-mixing twin fluid nozzle on the conversion efficiency of reductant. The lab-scaled experiment device was installed to mimic the urea-SCR system of the marine diesel engine for this study. In a low temperature inflow gas condition which is similar with the exhaust temperature of large marine diesel engine, this study found that the conversion efficiency of reductant of when relative big size urea solution droplets are injected into exhaust gas stream can be larger than that of when small size urea solution droplets are injected. According to results of this study, the reason was associated with decrease of reaction rate constant caused from temperature drop of inflow gas by assist air of twin fluid atomizer.

  • The direct injection(DI) diesel engine has become a prime candidate for future transportation needs because of its high thermal efficiency. However, nitrogen oxides(NOx) increase in the local high temperature regions and particulate matter (PM) increases in the diffusion flame region within diesel combustion. Therefore, the demand for developing a suitable after treatment device has been increased. NOx absorbing catalysts are based on the concept of NOx storage and release making it possible to reduce NOx emission in net oxidizing gas conditions. This De-NOx system, called the LNT(Lean NOx Trap) catalyst, absorbs NOx in lean exhaust gas conditions and release it in rich conditions. This technology can give high NOx conversion efficiency, but the right amount of reducing agent should be supplied into the catalytic converter at the right time. In this research, a performance characteristics of LNT with a hydrogen enriched gas as a reductant was examined and strategies of controlling the injection and rich exhaust gas condition were studied. The NOx reduction efficiency is closely connected to the injection timing and duration of reductant. LNT can reduce NOx efficiently with only 1 % fuel penalty.

The Effect of Reducing Agent on the Production of Niobium Powder by Metallothermic Reduction (금속열환원법에 의한 니오븀 분말제조시 환원제의 영향)

  • In this study, niobium powder was made from potassium heptafluoroniobite($K_2NbF_7$) using sodium(Na) as a reductant and KCl, KF as a diluent based on the hunter metallothermic reduction method. The excesses of reductant were varied from 0%, 3%, 5% and 7%. When 7% excess of sodium was used, the un-reacted sodium remained in the reacted product. The niobium powder has been achieved by reducing 50 g of $K_2NbF_7$ with 5% sodium excess in a charge at a reduction temperature of $850^{\circ}C$. The proportion of fine fraction decreased appreciably and the yield of niobium powder improved from 65% to 85% with the increase of sodium excess. The average particle size of niobium powder is improved from 0.2 microns to 0.3 microns in the 5% excess sodium.

  • Niobium(Nb) and Tantalum(Ta) are rarely found apart in nature and never in the free state. The element niobium amounts to 3% of the crustal abundance. On the whole, the niobium capacitor showed somewhat more unstable characteristics than the commercial tantalum capacitors, but is nonetheless considered applicable as a future substitute for tantalum capacitors. In this study, niobium powder was made from potassium heptafluoroniobite($K_2NbF_7$) by using sodium(Na) as a reductant and KCl and KF as diluents based on the hunter sodiothermic reduction method.,In order to obtain a high surface area niobium powder via the sodiothermic reduction method, a certain amount of diluent, such as alkali metal halides selected from NaCl, KCl, KF and NaF, was added in the raw materials to be reduced. However, if a higher surface area of powder is required, more diluents need to be used in the said method in order to produce niobium powder. But when more diluents are used, the niobium powder will be contaminated with more impurities and the yield will also decreased.

DeNOx by SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) Using LPG as a Reductant (LPG-SCR에 의한 질소산화물 제거)

  • In this study, selective catalytic reduction (SCR) reaction was performed using liqufied petroleum gas (LPG) as a reductant for removing NOx. The catalysts were manufactured with different amounts of Cu and Fe supported on HZSM-5 in order to remove NOx. The NOx conversion ratio was studied with changing the temperature and the catalyst amount. The catalysts were manufactured by calcination with flowing the ambient air at $500^{\circ}C$ for three hours. Cupper of 1~4 wt% and iron of 0.5~2 wt% were supported on HZSM-5 of which Si/Al ratio were 80. According to the reaction results, the catalyst which Cu of 3 wt% supported on HZSM-5 showed the highest conversion rate. XRD, XPS, and TPR analysis were also performed for the characterization of catalysts.

Study and Recovery on the Capacity Loss after the Long Charge-discharge Operation of VRFB-ESS (장시간 충방전에 따른 VRFB-ESS의 용량 손실 회복에 대한 연구)

  • As the charges/discharges of VRFB-ESS were repeated during 150cycles or more, the capacity of electrolyte in VRFB-ESS was decreased little by little. It results from the decreasing of the level of anolyte and the increasing of the valance value of the catholyte. Then, we tried to recover the capacity loss with 3 different ways. The first way was that the levels of anolyte and catholyte were allowed to be evenly equalized when the difference in the levels of two different electrolytes were severe. The second one was to lessen the valance value of the catholyte through the reduction reaction to 4-valant ions of 5-valant ions in the catholyte with the reductant, oxalic acid. The last one was that the all electrolytes of analyte and catholyte were allowed to be electro-chemically reduced to 3.5 of the valance value by oxidizing new electrolyte with 3.5 valance ions. The last way was the most effective to recover the capacity loss.

Comparisons of Urinary Arsenic Analysis by Pre-reductant for Preconditioning via the FI-HG-AAS Method (FI-HG-AAS를 이용한 전처리 과정에서 사용되는 예비환원제의 종류에 따른 요중 비소 분석결과 비교)

  • Objectives: The method of analyzing urinary arsenic by flow injection hydride generation atomic absorption spectrometry (FI-HG-AAS) is generally used because it shows relatively greater sensitivity, low detection limits, low blocking action, and is simple to operate. In this study, the results of analysis according to three pre-reductants commonly used in the FI-HG-AAS method were compared with each other. Methods: To analyze urinary arsenic, nineteen urine samples were collected from adults aged 43-79 years old without occupational arsenic exposure. Analysis equipment was FI-HG-AAS (AAnalyst 800/FIAS 400, Perkin- Elmer Inc., USA). The three pre-reductants were potassium iodide (KI/AA), C3H7NO2S (L-cysteine), and a mixture of KI/AA and L-cysteine (KI/AA&L-cysteine). Results: In the results of the analysis, the recovery rate of the method using KI/AA was 82.3%, 95.7% for Lcysteine, and 123.5% for KI/AA and L-cysteine combined. When compared with the results by use of high performance liquid chromatography inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry (HPLC-ICP-MS), the method using L-cysteine was the closest to those using HPLC-ICP-MS ($98.57{\mu}g/L$ for HPLC-ICP-MS; $74.96{\mu}g/L$ for L-cysteine; $69.23{\mu}g/L$ for KI/AA and L-cysteine; $13.06{\mu}g/L$ for KI/AA) and were significantly correlated (R2=0.882). In addition, they showed the lowest coefficient of variation in the results between two laboratories that applied the same method. Conclusion: The efficiency of hydride generation is considered highly important to the analysis of urinary arsenic via FI-HG-AAS. This study suggests that using L-cysteine as a pre-reductant may be suitable and the most rational among the FI-Hg-AAS methods using pre-reductants.
