A polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP)/Ag nanocomposites was prepared by the simultaneous thermal reduction and radical polymerization route. The in situ synthesis of the Ag/PVP nanocomposites is based on the finding that the silver n-propylcarbamate (Ag-PCB) complex can be directly dissolved in the NVP monomer, and decomposed by only heat treatment in the range of 110 to $130^{\circ}C$ to form silver metal. Silver nanoparticles with a narrow size distribution (5 - 40 nm) were obtained, which were well dispersed in the PVP matrix. A successful synthesis of Ag/PVP nanocomposites then proceeded upon heat treatment as low as $110^{\circ}C$. Moreover, important advantages of the in situ synthesis of Ag/PVP composites include that no additives (e.g. solvent, surface-active agent, or reductant of metallic ions) are used, and that the stable silver nanocolloid solution can be directly prepared in high concentration simply by dissolving the Ag/PVP nanocomposites in water or organic solvent.
SPE-composites which was prepared with impregnation-reduction method for hydroen production were investigated with morphological and electrochemical analysis. As Pt reagent's concentration increased, Pt loadings increased. However, reductant's concentration had a little effect on Pt loadings. By the morphological analysis, it was found that Pt was deposited inside of SPE. Furthermore, with electrochemical analysis, we found that Pt loading, electricity, roughness factor and active surface area were $2.05mg/cm^2$, 14.20 mC, 21.55, $10.51cm^2/mg$ respectively at reducing agent concentration 0.05 mol/L. Therefore, we found the deposited Pt inside of SPE would give an effect on electrical characteristics of SPE-composites.
A novel antibacterial paper coated with chitosan-based silver (Ag) nanocomposite prepared by green synthesis has been investigated for a wide range of application in food, agricultural and medical packaging. Green synthesis of Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) was carried out by a chemical reaction involving a mixture of chitosan-silver nitrate (AgNO3) in an autoclave at 15 psi, $121^{\circ}C$, for 15-120 sec. AgNPs and their formation in chitosan were confirmed by both UV-Vis spectroscopy and transmission electron microscope (TEM). Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) study showed that free amino groups in chitosan act as an effective reductant and AgNPs stabilizer. Antibacterial test of coated paper with as-prepared chitosan-AgNPs was performed qualitatively against E. coli based on the formation of halo zones around coated papers and it was shown to be effective in suppressing the growth of E. coli with increasing Ag contents in coating layer.

As diesel engines have high power and good fuel economy on top of less $CO_2$ emissions, their market shares are increasing not only in commercial vehicles but also in passenger cars. LNT, urea-SCR and combination of them have been developed for after-treatment of the exhaust gas to reduce NOx on diesel vehicles. The aim of this study is to investigate the $NH_3$ generation characteristics of LNT catalyst downstream. It was found from the experiments of the LNT catalyst that $H_2$ was useful as a reductant in SCR catalyst because it can enhance the de-NOx performance and improve $NH_3$ selectivity. The $NH_3$ generation of the LNT, when hydrothermally aged at $900^{\circ}C$ for 18 hr, increased to about 90ppm at $300^{\circ}C$ due to Pt sintering and Ba agglomeration. LNT catalyst was most sulfur poisoning at $500^{\circ}C$. The $NH_3$ slip increased due to the reduction of residence time according to SV increase.
Ferrous cement hydrates made from hydrating Portland cement doped with Fe (II) were reported to reductively dechlorinate chlorinated organics and to reduce Cr (VI) to Cr (III). In this study, kinetics of nitrate removal by ferrous cement hydrates were investigated. Nitrate removal kinetics were characterized by experimental variables such as cement hydration, amount of cement addition, Fe (II) dose, pH, and byproducts. As a result, hydrated cement showed better performances than non-hydrated cement due to the formation of LDH (layered double hydroxide). Doping of Fe (II) into the cement was found to improve removal efficiency at high pHs by association with Fe (II) sorbed on cement hydrates as a reactive reductant. Reduction of nitrate produced ammonium as a major product, which accounted for 63.5% of the final products, and nitrite (0.15%) as a minor product. These results indicate that the developed media are effective as sorbent/reducing agents in the nitrate removal and the reaction mechanisms of nitrate removal are sorption and reduction.

Nano-sized iron particles were synthesized by reduction of $Fe^{3+}$ in aqueous solution under two reaction conditions, aerobic and anaerobic, and the reactivity of iron was tested by reaction with trichloroethene (TCE) using a batch system. Results showed that iron produced under anoxic condition for both synthesis and drying steps gave rise to iron with higher reduction reactivity, indicating the presence of oxygen is not favorable for production of nano-sized iron deemed to accomplish reactivity enhancement from particle sized reduction. Nano-sized iron sample obtained from the anoxic synthesis condition was further characterized using various instrumental measurements to identity particle morphology, composition, surface area, and particle size distribution. The scanning electron microscopic (SEM) image showed that synthesized particles were uniform, spherical particles (< 100 nm), and aggregated into various chain structures. The effects of other synthesis conditions such as solution pH, initial $Fe^{3+}$ concentration, and reductant injection rate on the reactivity of nano-sized iron, along with standardization of the synthesis protocol, are presented in the companion paper.
In the conventional metallothermic reduction (MR) process for obtaining tantalum powder in batch-type operation. it is difficult to control morphology and location of deposits. On the other hand, a electronically mediated reaction (EMR) process is capable to overcome these difficulties and has a merit of continuous process, but it has the defect that the reduction yield is poor. MR-EMR combination process is a method that is able to overcome demerits of MR and EMR process. In this study, a MR-EMR combination process has been applied to the production of tantalum powder by sodium reduction of $K_2$TaF$_{7}$. The total charge passed through external circuit and average particle size (FSSS) were increased with increasing reduction temperature. The proportion of fine particle (-325 mesh) was decreased with increasing reduction temperature. The yield was improved from 65% to 74% with increasing reduction temperature. Considering the charge, impurities, morphology, particle size and yield, an reduction temperature of 1,123 K was found to be optimum temperature for MR-EMR combination process.
Pure tantalum powder has been produced by combining Na as a reducing agent, $K_2$TaF$_{7}$ as feed material, KCl and KF as a diluent in a stainless steel (SUS) bomb, using the method of metallothermic reduction. And we examined various types of after-treatment that affect the high purification of powder. A significant amount of impurities contained in recovered powder was removed in various conditions of acid washing. In particular, 20% (HCl + HNO$_3$) was effective in removing heavy metal impurities such as Fe, Cr and Ni, 8% H$_2$SO$_4$ + 8% $Al_2$(SO$_4$)$_3$ in removing fluorides such as K and F from non-reactive feed material, and 2% $H_2O$$_2$ + 1 % HF in removing oxides that formed during reaction. Significant amounts of oxygen and part of light metal impurities could be removed through deoxidation and heat treatment process. On the other hand, because it is difficult to remove completely heavy metal impurities such as Fe, Cr, and Ni through acid washing or heat treatment process if their contents are too high, it is considered desirable to inhibit these impurities from being mixed during the reduction process as much as possible.
