  • [ $Eu^{2+}$ ]-activated barium magnesium silicate phosphor, $(Ba,Ca)_{3}MgSi_{2}O_{8}:Eu_{x}$, has been known to emit blue-green light. In this study we report the manufacturing processes for producing either pure green or pure blue light-emitting phosphor from the same composition of $Ba_{2-x}Ca_{2}CaMgSi_{2}O_{8}:Eu_{x}$ (0 < x < 1) by controlling heat treatment conditions. Green light emitting phosphor of $Ba_{1.9}CaMgSi_{2}O_{8}:Eu_{0.1}$ can be produced under the sample preparation condition of highly reducing atmosphere of $23\%\;H_2/77\%\;N_2$, while blue or blue-green light emitting phosphor under reducing atmosphere of $5\~20\%\;H_2\;/\;95\~80\%$ N_2. The green light-emitting phosphors are prepared in two steps: firing at $800\~1000^{\circ}C$ for $2\~5$ h in air then at $1100\~1350^{\circ}C$ for 2-5 h under reducing atmosphere $23\%$ $H_2/77\%\;N_2$. The excitation spectrum of the green light-emitting phosphor shows a broadband of $300\~410$ nm. The emission spectrum has a maximum intensity at the wavelength of about 501 nm. The CIE value of green light emission is (0.162, 0.528). The pure blue light-emitting phosphors can be produced using the $Ba{2_x}CaMgSi_{2}O_{8}:Eu_{x}$ by introducing additional firing step at $1150\~1300^{\circ}C$ in air before the final reducing treatment. The XRD analysis shows that the green light-emitting phosphor mainly consisted of $Ba_{1.31}Ca_{0.69}SiO_{4}$ (JCPDS $\#$ 36-1449) and other minor phases i.e., $MgSiO_3$ (JCPDS $\#$ 22-0714) and $Ca_{2}BaMgSi_{2}O_{8}$ (JCPDS $\#$ 31-0128). The blue light-emitting phosphor mainly consisted of $Ca_{2}BaMgSi_{2}O_{8}$ phase.

  • ZnSe/$SiO_2$ coaxial nanowires were synthesized by a two-step process: thermal evaporation of ZnSe powders and sputter-deposition of $SiO_2$. Two different types of nanowires are observed: thin rod-like ones with a few to a few tens of nanometers in diameter and up to a few hundred of micrometers in length and wide belt-like ones with a few micrometers in width. Room-temperature photoluminescence (PL) measurement showed that ZnSe/$SiO_2$ coaxial nanowires had an orange emission band centered at approximately 610 nm. The intensity of the orange emission from the $SiO_2$-sheathed ZnSe nanowires was enhanced significantly by annealing in a reducing atmosphere whereas it was degraded by annealing in an oxidizing atmosphere. The origins of the PL changes by annealing are discussed based on the energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analysis results.

  • This study is focused on developing a software that predicts the temperature distribution and infrared Emission from 30 objects considering the solar radiation through the atmosphere. The solar radiation through the atmosphere is modeled by using the well-known LOWTRAN7 code. Surface temperature information is essential for generating the infrared scene of the object. Predictions of the transient surface temperature and the infrared emission from a naval ship by using the software developed here show fairly good results by representing the typical temperature and emitted radiance distributions expected for the naval ship considered in mid latitude. Emissivity of each material is appeared to be an important parameter for recognizing the target in Infrared band region. The numerical results also show that the low emissivity surface on the heat source can be helpful in reducing the IR image contrast as compared to the background sea.

  • Y$_2$O$_3$ films were pulsed laser deposited on cube textured Ni and Ni-W substrates to be used as a single buffer layer of YBCO coated conductor. Initial deposition of $Y_2$O$_3$ films was performed in a reducing atmosphere, and subsequent deposition was done in the base pressure of the chamber and oxygen atmosphere. The $Y_2$O$_3$ films have a strong cube texture (The full width at half maximum of the ø-scan of $Y_2$O$_3$ was 8.4 which was the same as that of metal substrate) and smooth crack-free microstructure. The biaxially textured YBCO films (The full width at half maximum of the ø-scan was 10.2) pulsed laser deposited on the $Y_2$O$_3$/metal exhibited Tc(R=0) of 86.5K and Jc of 0.7 MA/cm2 at 77K in self field, representing that the $Y_2$O$_3$ single buffer layer is an efficient diffusion barrier of Ni and thus very promising for the achievement of high-Jc YBCO coated conductor.

  • In order to investigate air pollution by heavy metals in Seoul city, the suspended particulates in the atmosphere were sampled with high volume air sampler in industrial area(Ku Ro Dong), commerical(Kwang Hwa Moon) and residential(Shin Chon Dong) from January to November, 1977. The sampled suspended particulates were digested and extracted from suspended particulates with the acidic solution by reflux-extraction technique, and were measured by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. And mercury was measured by mercury analyzer applying the reducing sublimation technique. Among heavy metals analyzed, the iron was identified at the highest level in the suspended particulates and the chromium was the least. Through the surveyed area, the concentration of heavy metals of the industrial area was comparatively high among others and the commercial was the second. It was detected that lead was the most concentrated in the suspended particulate of the commercial area, that might be caused of the traffic emissions. The seasonal variations were analyzed and the correlations among heavy metals and total suspended particulate were also calculated. Especially, the iron was highly correlated with total suspended particulate in all the surveyed areas.

  • In this paper, a yellow phosphor $Sr_3SiO_5:Eu^{2+}$ that emits efficiently at the 450 nm excitation for warm white LED is studied. In addition, the effects of various flux $BaF_2$, $NH_4Cl$ on the emission spectra were investigated. The samples were synthesized through conventional solid state reaction under reducing atmosphere of 95% $N_2$-5% $H_2$ mixture at the high temperature. All phosphors showed a excitation band from 450 nm and broad band emission peaking at region of 580 nm. The optimal concentration of $BaF_2$ flux is 3 wt% for $Sr_3SiO_5$ with doping 0.05mol Eu phosphors fired in a reductive atmosphere. The phosphor showed highest emission peaking at 582 nm.

  • This study presents the microstructure-electrical property relationship of reactive-sputtered Ta$_2$O$_{5}$ MIM capacitor structure processed by annealing in a vacuum and $O_2$ ambience. A microstructural investigation showed the existence of amorphous phase in as-deposited condition and the formation of preferentially oriented-Ta$_2$O$_{5}$ in $700^{\circ}C$ annealing. On annealing under the $O_2$ atmosphere, the Ta$_2$O$_{5}$ film exhibited the trend of its composition\`s approaching to stoichiometry from off-stoichiometry, analyzed by EPMA, the leakage current decrease and the enhanced temperature-capacitance characteristic stability. In the case of low temperature vacuum-annealing treatment, the leakage current behavior was stable irrespective of applied electric field. In the high temperature-annealed film at a vacuum condition, the electrical properties was observed to deteriorate. The results state that in Ta$_2$O$_{5}$ film annealed at $O_2$ atmosphere, gives rise to improvement of electrical characteristics in the capacitor were improved by reducing oxygen-vacancy and dandling Ta-O bond.-O bond.

  • Polycrystalline powder of vanadium-doped forsterite (Vδ $Mg_2SiO_4$) was synthesized by the $H_2O_2$-assisted sol-gel method. The vanadium dopant, which was added as VO$(OMe)_3$ in methanol, went through several redox reactions as the sol-gel reaction proceeded. Upon adding VO$(OMe)_3$ to a mixture of $Mg(OMe)_2$ and Si$(OEt)_4$ in methanol, V(V) reduced to V(IV). As hydrolysis reaction proceeded, the V(IV) oxidized all back to V(V). Apparently, some of the V(V) reduced to V(IV) during subsequent gelation by condensation reaction. The V(IV) remained even after heat treatment of the gel in highly oxidizing atmosphere. The crystallization of the xerogel around 880 ℃ readily produced single phase forsterite without any minor phase. Using the polycrystalline powder as feeding stock, single crystals of vanadium-doped forsterite were grown by the floating zone method in oxidizing or reducing atmosphere. The doping was limited in low level because of the high partitioning of the vanadium in liquid phase during melting. The greenish single crystal absorbed visible light of 700∼1100 nm. But, no emission was obtained in near infrared range.

  • Sublimation of $Bi_2O_3$-based materials is an important degradation issue for the long-term applications of many electronic devices. A series of $SnO_2$-doped $Bi_2O_3$ materials (SBO), was synthesized, densified, and then tested in air or strong reducing atmosphere. The $SnO_2$-doping effects and sublimation kinetics of the SBO materials were studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and precise mass loss measurement. The results show that formation of $Bi_2Sn_2O_7$ phase greatly retards the mass loss of SBO. The SBO samples show a surface sublimation in an energy of $52.6kJ{\cdot}mol^{-1}$. However, the sublimation is also controlled by surface microstructure as the amount of vaporizing species (the Bi or gaseous Bi-oxides) is more than 0.1 mass%. The evaporation is retarded on the rough surface and the mechanism of surface evaporation is changed to diffusional control.

  • This paper was focused on the wear characteristics of ion-nitrided metal and with ion-nitride processing, which is basically concerned with the effects of carbon content in workpiece and added carbon content gas atmosphere on the best wear performance. Increased carbon content in workpiece increases compound layer thickness, but decreases diffusion layer thickness. On the other hand, a small optimal amount of carbon content in gas atmosphere increase compound layer thickness as well as diffusion layer thickness and hardness. Wear tests show that the compound layer of ion-nitrided metal reduces wear rate when the applied wear load is small. However, as the load becomes large, the existence of compound layer tends to increase wear rate. Compressive residual stress at the compound layer is the largest at the compound layer, and decreases as the depth from the surface increases. It is found in the analysis that under small applied load, the critical depth where voids and cracks may be created and propagated is located at the compound layer, so that the adhesive wear is created and the existence of compound layer reduces the amount of wear. When the load becomes large, the critical depth is located below the compound layer and delamination, which may explained by surface deformation, crack nucleation and propagation, is created and the existence of compound layer increases wear rate. For the compound layer, at added carbon contents of 0 percent and 0.5 at. percent, the $\varepsilon$ monophase is predominant. But at 0.7 at. percent added carbon, the $\varepsilon$ monophase formation tends to be severely inhibited and r' and $Fe_3C$ polyphase formation becomes dominant. This increased hard $\varepsilon$ phase layer was observed to be more beneficial in reducing friction and wear.
