To measure the mass distribution of galaxy systems weak-lensing analysis has been widely used because it directly measures the total mass of a system regardless of its baryon content and dynamical state. However, the weak-lensing only provides a map of projected surface mass density. On the other hand, galaxy redshift surveys provide a map of the three-dimensional galaxy distribution. It thus can resolve the structures along the line of sight projected in the weak-lensing map. Therefore, the comparison of structures identified in the weak-lensing maps and in the redshift surveys is an important test of the issues limiting applications of weak-lensing to the identification of galaxy clusters. Geller et al. (2010) and Kurtz et al. (2012) compared massive clusters identified in a dense redshift survey with significant weak-lensing map convergence peaks. Both assessments of the efficiency of weak-lensing map for cluster identification did not draw a general conclusion, because the sample is so small. Thus, we additionally perform deep imaging observations of fields in a dense galaxy redshift survey that contain galaxy clusters at z~0.2-0.5, using CFHT Megacam.
Intrinsic alignments (IA), the coherent alignment of intrinsic galaxy orientations, can be a source of a systematic error of weak lensing surveys. The redshift evolution of IA also contains information about the physics of galaxy formation and evolution. We present the first measurement of IA at high redshift, z~1.4, using the spectroscopic catalog of blue star-forming galaxies of the FastSound redshift survey, with the galaxy shape information from the Canada-Hawaii-France telescope lensing survey. The IA signal is consistent with zero with power-law amplitudes fitted to the projected correlation functions for density-shape and shape-shape correlation components, $A_{\delta+}=-0.0040\pm 0.0754$ and $A_{++}=-0.0159\pm 0.0271$, respectively. These results are consistent with those obtained from blue galaxies at lower redshifts (e.g., $A_{\delta+}=0.0035_{-0.0389}^{+0.0387}$ and $A_{++}=0.0045_{-0.0168}^{+0.0166}$ at z=0.51 from the WiggleZ survey), suggesting no strong redshift evolution of IA. The upper limit of the constrained IA amplitude corresponds to a few percent contamination to the weak-lensing shear power spectrum, resulting in systematic uncertainties on the cosmological parameter estimations by $-0.035<\Delta \sigma_8<0.026$ and $-0.025<\Delta \Omega_{\mathrm m}<0.019$.
New statistical method is proposed to coherently combine Baryon Acoustic Oscillation statistics (BAO) and peculiar velocity measurements exploiting decomposed density--density and velocity--velocity spectra in real space from the observed redshift distortions in redshift space, 1) to achieve stronger dark energy constraints, sigma(w)=0.06 and sigma(w_a)=0.20, which are enhanced from BAO or velocity measurements alone, and 2) to cross--check consistency of dark energy constraints from two different approaches; BAO as geometrical measurements and peculiar velocity as large scale structure formation observables.
At high redshift, unlike local, many galaxy clusters are still at their stages of building. Likewise, they show a wide range in their star formation properties: some are still forming stars actively unlike their local counterparts, while others have very low level of star formation already. Here we report the two high-redshift (z~1) galaxy clusters, confirmed via Magellan MOS observation. While existing at similar redshift and having similar mass, these two clusters show very different quiescent galaxy fraction. The origin of this difference is investigated, and will be presented in the presentation.
Metallicity is one of the most important properties in understanding galaxy evolution. However, measuring metallicity is limited to low redshift (z<3.5) due to the faintness of the metallicity indicators in normal galaxies. For high redshift universe, active galactic nuclei (AGN) can be used to constrain the host galaxy metallicity. Previous studies investigated AGN metallicity using emission line flux ratios (i.e., NV/CIV and FeII/MgII), finding no evolution up to z~6. Those results might be due to selection effect since previous studies are based on very luminous AGNs. The observed luminosity-metallicity relation of AGNs (e.g., Nagao et al. 2006) suggests that luminous AGNs may be already matured at the observed epoch. Considering the luminosity-metallicty relation, we focused on low luminosity AGNs to find young AGNs (i.e., low metallicity). Through the Gemini/GNIRS observation in 2012A and 2015A (K-GMT GN-2015A-Q-203 PI: Shin, J.), we obtained the Gemini/GNIRS data for 7 high redshift AGNs (3.0
An understanding of the ultraviolet (UV) properties of nearby galaxies is essential for interpreting images of high redshift systems. In this respect, the prediction of optical-band morphologies at high redshifts requires UV images of local galaxies with various morphologies. We present the simulated optical images of galaxies at high redshifts using diverse and high-quality UV images of nearby galaxies obtained through the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX). We measured CAS (concentration, asymmetry, clumpiness) as well as Gini/M20 parameters of galaxies at near-ultraviolet (NUV) and simulated optical images to quantify effects of redshift on the appearance of distant stellar systems. We also discuss the change of morphological parameters with redshift.
We investigate the direct determination of expansion history using redshift distortions without plugging into detailed cosmological parameters. The observed spectra in redshift space include a mixture of information: fluctuations of density-density and velocity-velocity spectra, and distance measures of perpendicular and parallel components to the line of sight. Unfortunately it is hard to measure all the components simultaneously without any specific prior assumption. The degeneracy breaking, between the effect of cosmic distances and redshift distortions for example, depends on the prior we assume. An alternative approach is to utilize the cosmological principle inscribed in the heart of the Friedmann-Lematre-Robertson-Walker (hereafter FLRW) universe, that is, the specific relation between the angular diameter distance and the Hubble parameter, in this degeneracy breaking.
Gamma ray burst, the most brightest explosion phenomena in the current universe is well suited for study of high redshift universe. We report the afterglow multi-wavelength observation and GTC spectroscopy follow up of GRB 140304A which was exploded at z=5.283. The spectrum was shown damped Lyman alpha features and a series of absorption lines S, Si, SiII*, Oi, CII, CII*, SiIV are clearly detected at common redshift. Clear optical flares are detected when X-ray flare happened and a possible gamma-ray excess also. At this conference, we report on implications for the GRB host and environments using its absorption features which place the results in context to other well studied high redshift GRBs and studies about the ejecta using its observed flaring activities.
The FastSound project is a galaxy redshift survey using Subaru/FMOS to detect $H{\alpha}$ emitting galaxies at z ~ 1:3, for the purpose of probing the origin of the accelerated expansion of the universe. The survey has detected ~4,000 galaxy redshifts in a total area of $30deg^2$, and detected the redshift space distortion at this redshift range for the first time. The redshift space distortion (RSD) signal will be used to derive a measurement of the growth rate of large scale structure, which will provide a test for modified gravity as a possible origin of accelerated cosmic explansion. Here we present an overview and the current status of the project.
Star formation activity of galaxies, along with color and morphology, show significant environmental dependence in local universe, where galaxies in dense environment tend to be more quiescent and redder. However, many studies show that such environmental dependence does not continue at higher redshifts beyond z~1. The question of how the environmental dependence of galactic properties have developed over time is crucial to understanding cosmic galactic evolution. By combining data from Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Legacy Survey(CFHTLS), Infrared Medium-Deep Survey(IMS), and other surveys, the photometric redshifts of galaxies in CFHTLS W2 field were estimated by fitting spectral energy distribution. The distribution of galaxies was mapped in redshift bins of 0.05 interval from 0.6 to 1.4. For each redshift bin, the number density was mapped. The galaxies in high density regions were grouped into clusters using friend-of-friend method. The color of galaxies were analyzed to study the correlation with redshift as well as environmental difference between field galaxies and cluster member galaxies.
