  • A borate compound was adopted as new host material for $EU^{3+}$ activator. The $Eu^{3+}-doped\;YCa_3(GaO)_3(BO_3)_4$ (YCGB) phosphors were successfully synthesized. Also, their photoluminescence properties under the excitation of UV ray were measured. In the XRD patterns of the synthesized powders, most peaks were well-matched to a gaudefroyite phase. The emission of $Eu^{3+}$ in YCGB consists of a strong peak centered at 622 nm, which is attributed to $^5D_O-^7F_2$ transition of $Eu^{3+}$ and several weak peaks at near the wavelength. Optimum $Eu^{3+}$ concentration of the red phosphor under the excitation with the wavelength of 395 nm was about 75 mol%. This indicates that the red phosphor has a relatively higher critical concentration than that of the other $Eu^{3+}-doped$ phosphors. The dominant interaction character of $Eu^{3+}$ might be dipole-dipole interaction.

  • The synthesis and luminescent properties of trivalent europium activated gadolinium oxide red phosphors by sol-gel process have been investigated. Aqueous metal nitrate solution was mixed with EDTA which was chosen by the most suitable material of sol-gel formation as chelating agents. We noticed that the samples when are heated with EDTA at a temperature of $100^{\circ}C$ for lhrs, produced brownish and crisp powders due to condensation reaction on decomposition, dehydration and formation of sol-gel. Hence, when the powder pre-heated at about $100^{\circ}C$ was then heated at $1200^{\circ}C$ for 3hrs in atmosphere, the luminescence properties of resultant $Gd_{2}O_{3}:Eu^{3+}$ phosphor was measured by SEM, FT-IT and brightness intensity was shown 20% higher than those prepared by conventional method and by other chelating agent.

  • Double molybdate $NaGd_{1-x}(MoO_4)_2:Ho^{3+}/Yb^{3+}$ phosphors with proper doping concentrations of $Ho^{3+}$ and $Yb^{3+}$ ($x=Ho^{3+}+Yb^{3+}$, $Ho^{3+}=0$ and 0.05, and $Yb^{3+}=0$, 0.35, 0.40, 0.45, and 0.50) were successfully synthesized using the microwave sol-gel method. Well-crystallized particles formed after heat-treatment at $800^{\circ}C$ for 16 h showed fine and homogeneous morphologies with particle sizes of $1{\sim}3{\mu}m$. The spectroscopic properties were examined using photoluminescence emission and Raman spectroscopy. Under excitation at 980 nm, the upconversion doped samples exhibited strong yellow emissions, from the combination of strong emission bands at 545 nm and 655 nm in the green and red spectral regions, respectively. The strong 545 nm emission band in the green region corresponded to the $^5S_2/^5F_4{\rightarrow}^5I_8$ transition in the $Ho^{3+}$ ions, while the strong 655 nm band in the red region appeared because of the $^5F_5{\rightarrow}^5I_8$ transition in the $Ho^{3+}$ ions. The pump power dependence and the Commission Internationale de L'Eclairage chromaticity of the upconversion emission intensity were evaluated in detail.

  • $NaLa_{1-x}{(MoO_4)}_2$:$Ho^{3+}/Yb^{3+}$ phosphors with the correct doping concentrations of $Ho^{3+}$ and $Yb^{3+}$ ($x=Ho^{3+}+Yb^{3+}$, $Ho^{3+}=0.05$ and $Yb^{3+}=0.35$, 0.40, 0.45 and 0.50) were successfully synthesized by the microwave-modified sol-gel method. Well-crystallized particles formed after heat-treatment at $900^{\circ}C$ for 16 h showed a fine and homogeneous morphology with particle sizes of $3-5{\mu}m$. The optical properties were examined using photoluminescence emission and Raman spectroscopy. Under excitation at 980 nm, the UC intensities of the doped samples exhibited strong yellow emissions based on the combination of strong emission bands at 545-nm and 655-nm emission bands in green and red spectral regions, respectively. The strong 545-nm emission band in the green region corresponds to the $^5S_2/^5F_4{\rightarrow}^5I_8$ transition in $Ho^{3+}$ ions, while the strong emission 655-nm band in the red region appears due to the $^5F_5{\rightarrow}^5I_8$ transition in $Ho^{3+}$ ions. • In this study, $ZnGa_2O_4$ phosphors in its application to field emission displays and electroluminescence were synthesized through the precipitation method and $Mn^{2+}$ ions. A green luminescence activator, $Cr^{3+}$ ions, and a red luminescence activator were separately doped into $ZnGa_2O_4$, which was then screen printed to an indium tin oxide substrate. The thick films of the $ZnGa_2O_4$ were deposited with the various thicknesses using nano-sized powder. The best luminescence characteristics were shown at a thickness of 60 ${\mu}m$. Additionally, green-emission $ZnGa_2O_4:Mn^{2+}$ and red-emission $ZnGa_2O_4:Cr^{3+}$ phosphor thick films, which have superior characteristics, were manufactured through the screen-printing method. These results indicate that $ZnGa_2O_4$ phosphors prepared through the precipitation method have wide application as phosphor of the full color emission.

  • $Gd_2O_3:Eu^{3+}$ red phosphors were prepared by template method from crystalline cellulose impregnated by metal salt. The crystallite size and photoluminescence(PL) property of $Gd_2O_3:Eu^{3+}$ red phosphors were controlled by varying the calcination temperature and $Eu^{3+}$ mol ratio. The nano dispersion of $Gd_2O_3:Eu^{3+}$ was also conducted with a bead mill wet process. Dependent on the time of bead milling, $Gd_2O_3:Eu^{3+}$ nanosol of around 100 nm (median particle size : $D_{50}$) was produced. As the bead milling process proceeded, the luminescent efficiency decreased due to the low crystallinity of the $Gd_2O_3:Eu^{3+}$ nanoparticles. In spite of the low PL property of $Gd_2O_3:Eu^{3+}$ nanosol, it was observed that the photoluminescent property was recovered after re-calcination. In addition, in the dispersed nanosol treated at $85^{\circ}C$, a self assembly phenomenon between particles appeared, and the particles changed from spherical to rod-shaped. These results indicate that particle growth occurs due to mutual assembly of $Gd(OH)_3$ particles, which is the hydration of $Gd_2O_3$ particles, in aqueous solvent at $85^{\circ}C$.

  • $KY_{1-x}(WO_4)_2:Ho^{3+}/Yb^{3+}$ yellow phosphors with doping concentrations of $Ho^{3+}$ and $Yb^{3+}$ ($x=Ho^{3+}+Yb^{3+}$, $Ho^{3+}=0.05$, 0.1, 0.2 and $Yb^{3+}=0.2$, 0.45) were successfully prepared using the microwave-modified sol-gel method; their upconversion (UC) photoluminescence properties were investigated in detail. Well-crystallized particles, formed after heat-treatment at $900^{\circ}C$ for 16 h, showed a fine and homogeneous morphology with particle sizes of $2-5{\mu}m$. Under excitation at 980 nm, the UC $KY_{0.7}(WO_4)_2:Ho_{0.1}Yb_{0.2}$ and $KY_{0.5}(WO_4)_2Ho_{0.05}Yb_{0.45}$ particles exhibited excellent yellow emissions based on a strong 545-nm emission band in the green region and a very strong 655-nm emission band in the red region. Pump power dependence and Commission Internationale de L'Eclairage chromaticity of the UC emission intensity were evaluated. The spectroscopic properties were examined comparatively using Raman spectroscopy.

  • $NaY_{1-x}(WO_4)_2:Ho^{3+}/Yb^{3+}$ phosphors with doping concentrations of $Ho^{3+}$ and $Yb^{3+}$ ($x=Ho^{3+}+Yb^{3+}$, $Ho^{3+}=0.05$, 0.1, 0.2, and $Yb^{3+}=0.2$, 0.45) were successfully synthesized via the cyclic microwave-modified sol-gel route; their upconversion properties were investigated. Well-crystallized particles showed a fine and homogeneous morphology with particle sizes of $2-5{\mu}m$. Under excitation at 980 nm, the synthesized particles exhibited yellow emissions based on a strong 550-nm emission band in the green region and a very strong 655-nm emission band in the red region. The Raman spectra of the doped particles indicated the domination of strong peaks at higher and lower frequencies induced by the incorporation of the $Ho^{3+}$ and $Yb^{3+}$ elements into the $Y^{3+}$ sites in the crystal lattice, which resulted in unit cell shrinkage that accompanied a new phase formation of the $WO_{4-x}$ group.

  • Optimized volume production of nanoscale phosphor powders synthesized by radio frequency (RF) plasma process was developed for the application to plasma display panels. The nano powders were synthesized by feeding the both solid and liquid type precursors, and nanoparticle phosphors were characterized in terms of particle size, shape, and photoluminescence (PL) intensities. Computer simulation was performed in advance to determine the process parameters, and nano phosphors were evaluated by comparing with current commercial micron-sized phosphor powders. Practical feeding of both solid and liquid type precursor was proved to be effective for volume production. The developed process showed a potential as a production method for red, blue and green phosphor although the PL intensity still needs further improvement.
