  • Four stars in the central region of 47 Tuc were observed spectroscopically using IPCS. The observed result showed that two asymptotic giant branch stars have the excess of nitrogen compared with the red giant branch stars, which indicates that the radial colour gradient in a globular clursters, at least for 47 Tuc, comes from the abundance gradient among the giant stars.

  • CN and CH band strengths for fourteen bright giants in the globular cluster M71 have been measured from archival spectra obtained with the Multiple Mirror Telescope. Adding the collected. data from the literature we confirm a bimodality of CN distribution on the red giant branch and the honzontal branch, and CN-CH anti-correlations on the lower giant branch and horizontal branch. However a CN-CH anti-correlation on the upper red giant branch is not quite clear as those of other branches. The small number If statistics could not be excluded as a possible cause. To confirm this, a greater number of sample stars are needed. We also confirm that the ratio of CN-strong to CN-weak stars is quite different from that in 47 Tuc, although the anti-correlation between CN and CH bands, the bimodality of the CN distribution, and the spatial distribution of CN stars in M71 are found to be similar to those III 47 Tuc.

  • Among the sample of red giant stars in the globular clusters M3 and M13 whose CN bands $(3883{\AA})$ have been measured by various authors, the stars on the red giant evolutionary state are selected to have their CN band distributions. It is found that all stars brighter than Mv = 0, are CN-strong in M3, while all stars except IV-29 are CN-strong in M13. It hints that the onset of meridional mixing is related with the RGB bumps of the clusters.

  • To investigate properties of the stellar contents of the resolved asymptotic giant branch stars in the nearby dwarf galaxies, we obtained wide-field JHKs images of the dwarf irregular galaxies NGC 6822, IC 1613 and the dwarf elliptical galaxy NGC 205, using the WIRCam near-infrared imager of the CFHT. The obtained (J-Ks, Ks) and (H-Ks, Ks) color-magnitude diagrams for the resolved stars in the galaxies contain populations of foreground stars, super giant stars, red giant stars and the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars. Using corollary photometric data in the visible bands, AGB stars were selected in the color-magnitude diagrams with a wide wavelength baseline in color indices. In color-color diagrams of the resolved AGB stars, we identified C stars from M giant stars for each galaxies, i.e., 726 C stars in NGC 6822, 126 C stars in IC 1613 and 593 C stars in NGC 205. The number ratios of C stars to M-giants were estimated to be $0.59\pm0.03$ in NGC 6822, $0.30\pm0.03$ in IC 1613 and $0.14\pm0.01$ in NGC 205. From analyses of the correlations of the spatial distribution of the C/M ratios with the HI properties and dynamical structures of the target galaxies, we discuss environmental effects of the star formation in the galaxies. We also discuss the epochs of the AGB star formation in the galaxies by comparing theoretical isochrones with the color distributions and luminosity functions of the AGB stars.

  • The wide field $(\~20'\times20')$ CCD photometry has been performed for more than 4,000 stars over a whole region of NGC 362 which is located inside the SMC halo. The Color-Magnitude diagram (CMD) and luminosit function (LF) for red giant branch (RGB) stars are presented, discussing a distinct bump along the RGB and some blue stars appearing in the blue horizontal branch (BHB) and above BHB. The anomalous globular cluster NGC 362 with highly populated red horizontal branch (RHB) stars is compared with the another anomalous globular cluster NGC 288 with highly populated BHB stars. A metal-rich, young blue component and metal-'poor, old red component of the SMC halo stars are examined.

  • As a result of our decade-long effort, we developed a new approach wherein small-aperture telescope powered by ingeniously designed narrow-band filter systems can have the capability to measure not only the heavy but also the lighter elemental abundances of the red-giant branch (RGB) and asymptotic-giant branch (AGB) stars in the globular clusters. Our novel approach can complement the intrinsic weakness of the results from the prestigious instruments, such as HST and the VLT. In our talk, we will present the multiple stellar populations of the RGB and the AGB stars in M5, as a pilot work.

  • We have obtained the J K images of the central region of the globular cluster M3 (NGC5272), using the $256\pm256$ InSb array. We present JK photometry of bright red giant branch stars in the central $2'.2\pm2'.2$ region of M3. The infrared color-magnitude diagrams are presented. The comparison of the red giant branch of M3 with that of M13 confirms that both globular clusters have similar metal abundances.

  • The VI CCD photometry is made for stars in the globular cluster M22 down to $V\approx19^m,\;I\approx18^m$. In the color-magnitude diagram (CMD), red giant branch (RGB), asymtotic giant branch (AGB) and blue horizontal branch (BHB) are well defined. The luminosity functions (LF) of RGB, AGB and BHB stars are derived, discussing deficient gaps and bumps in the CMD. The anomalously wide RGB seen in the BV photometric system is found to disappear in the VI photometric system.
