  • The study of recycled aggregate concrete in which demolition waste is utilized to produce aggregate for new concrete, can contribute to the solution of two problems. The first is the shortage of aggregate from river, and the second is the waste disposal problem. In comparison with natural aggregate concrete, recycled aggregate concrete shows reductions in compressive strength, tensile strength , vending strength, shear strength and increases in drying shrinkage and creep. Recycled aggregate concrete may also be less durable due to increase in porosity and permeability. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to analyze the applicability of recycled concrete in the influence of a substitute ratio of recycled sand gravel.

  • As the waste concrete is increased by demolition according to the plan of city-reconstruction and preperation of city-environment etc, the production of waste concrete in the country is being very increased every years. Because the use of recycled aggregate is low, the cases of unlawful reclamation and disuse are increased. These occur the social and economic problems. This experimental study is to investigate the fluidity, compressive strength and durability of flowing recycled aggregate concrete using the river sand and recycled coarse aggregate according to the replacement rate of fly-ash and to present the fundamental data for the using of flowing recycled aggregate concrete.

  • In this study, recently it is urgently required that demolition waste concrete has to be recycled on the construction because urban development is accelerated and redevelopment project is rapidly expanded, production quantity of construction and demolition waste concrete is being increased. As a results of drying shrinkage test under restrained and unrestrained condition, although workability and mechanical properites of concrete using HQRS were similar to that of concrete using natural sand, there were a great difference in deformation characteristic of dry shrinkage according to replacement ratio of HQRS. And, it makes sure that use of HQRS instead of partial nature sand was effective because drying shrinkage of concrete using 30 volume percentage of HQRS was smaller than that using only natural sand. Therefore, it is the objective of this study to provide the fundamental data about the re-application as an analysis of the drying shrinkage characteristics of concrete using HQRS and it is able to creta a high value-added by using HQRS.

Fundamental Characteristics of Concrete According to Fineness Modulus and Replacement Ratio of Crushed Sand (부순모래의 조립률 및 치환률에 따른 콘크리트의 기초 특성)

  • The paper evaluates the effect of the physical property, fineness modulus (FM) and replacement ratio of crushed sand on the characteristics of concrete. This is intended to use crushed sand from Daegu-Kyungbuk region as the fine aggregate of concrete. The experimental result indicates that the replacement ratio of crushed sand needs to be less than 50% to satisfy the mixed gradation of both natural and crushed sand when their FMs are 2.0 and 3.2, respectively. The slump of concrete with crushed sand increased as the replacement ratio of crushed sand increased, while the workability of concrete with the replacement ratio of more than 75% was significantly reduced. The air content and bleeding rate of concrete was reduced as the replacement ratio increased. Furthermore, due to the enhancement of the concrete adhesive regardless of the FM of crushed sand, compressive strength of concrete tended to improve as the replacement ratio increased.

Properties of recycled green building materials applied in lightweight aggregate concrete

  • This study uses recycled green building materials based on a Taiwan-made recycled mineral admixture (including fly ash, slag, glass sand and rubber powder) as replacements for fine aggregates in concrete and tests the properties of the resulting mixtures. Fine aggregate contents of 5% and 10% were replaced by waste LCD glass sand and waste tire rubber powder, respectively. According to ACI concrete-mixture design, the above materials were mixed into lightweight aggregate concrete at a constant water-to-binder ratio (W/B = 0.4). Hardening (mechanical), non-destructive and durability tests were then performed at curing ages of 7, 28, 56 and 91 days and the engineering properties were studied. The results of these experiments showed that, although they vary with the type of recycling green building material added, the slumps of these admixtures meet design requirements. Lightweight aggregate yields better hardened properties than normal-weight concrete, indicating that green building materials can be successfully applied in lightweight aggregate concrete, enabling an increase in the use of green building materials, the improved utilization of waste resources, and environmental protection. In addition to representing an important part of a "sustainable cycle of development", green building materials represent a beneficial reutilization of waste resources.

Mechanical Properties of Strain Hardening Cement-Based Composite (SHCC) with Recycled Materials (자원순환형 재료를 사용한 변형경화형 시멘트 복합체(SHCC)의 역학적 특성)

  • This paper describes results of an preliminary study to produce strain hardening cement-based composites (SHCCs)with consideration of sustainability for infrastructure applications. The aims of this study are to evaluate the influence of recycled materials on the mechanical characteristics of SHCCs, such as compressive, four-point bending, and direct tensile behaviors, and to give basic data for constitutive model for analyzing and designing infra structures with SHCCs. In this study, silica sand, cement, and PVA fibers, were partially replaced with recycled sand, fly-ash, and FET fibers in the mixture of SHCCs, respectively. Test results indicated that fly-ash could improve both bending and direct tensile performance of SHCCs due to increasing chemical bond strength at the interface between PVA fibers and cement matrices. However, SHCCs replaced with PET fibers showed much lower performance in bending and direct tensile tests due to originally low mechanical properties of own fibers, although compressive behavior is similar to PVA2.0 specimen. Also, it was noted that the recycled sand would increase elastic modulus of SHCCs due to larger grain size compared to silica sand. Based on pre-set target value to maintain the performance of SHCCs, it was concluded that the replacement ratio below 20% of fly-ash or below 50% of recycled sands would be desirable for creating sustainable SHCCs.

Strength Properties of Polymer Concrete Using Recycled Aggregate (재생골재를 사용한 폴리머 콘크리트의 강도 특성)

  • This study was performed to evaluate the strength properties of polymer concrete using recycled aggre-gate. The compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, flexural strength and pulse velocity of polymer concrete were decreased with increasing the content of recycled aggregate. At the curing age of 7days, the compressive strength was $80.5\~88.3$ MPa, the splitting tensile strength was $9.1\~10.6$ MPa, the flexural strength was $19.2\~21.5$ MPa and the pulse velocity was $3,931\~4,041$ m/s, respectively. Also, the compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, flexural strength and pulse velocity of concrete using recycled fine aggregate were higher than that of the silica sand. Therefore, these recycled aggregate polymer concretes were estimated for high strength concrete without major problem.

  • The objective of this research is to evaluate engineering properties of recycled aggregates, slag as coarse & fine aggregate and waste foundry sand(WFS) as fine aggregate, in hot mix asphalt(HMA). In this research, soundness, gradation and particle analysis, abrasion, specific gravity and absorption test were carried out. The optimum asphalt binder content(OAC) for various HMA combinations of recycled aggregate was determined by Marshall Mix Design. The ranges determined is between 7.2% and 7.5%. Indirect tensile test, resilient modulus test, creep test were carried out for characterization of rutting behavior of various combination of HMA. Judging from the limited tests, the HMA with recycled aggregates is not as good rutting resistance as the HMA with common aggregates. After finishing the Wheel tracking test, the application or feasibility for the use of recycled aggregate as asphalt paving material will be determined.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the validity of recycled aggregates (RAs) as a substitute for Sand-Mat material for soft ground improvement in the housing site development. To evaluate the possibility of RAs as a substitute for sand mat material, first of all, the criteria and regulations related with the quality of lateral drain layer were collected and checked. Secondly, both of the properties of RAs were compared with the properties of natural sand for the lateral drain layer. The material properties related to coefficient of permeability, pressure at-rest state and so on satisfied most standards. On the basis of the test results, RAs were used to the construction site as lateral drain layer. Accordingly, if the quality of RAs can be managed well, the application of these RAs as lateral drain layer to replace natural sand was highly effective. Also, based on cost analysis of two materials, RAs are proved to be very competitive.

Recycling Waste Concrete for Low-Volume Road Pavement (페콘크리트를 재활용한 소도로 포장에 관한 연구)

  • This paper presents the results of field experience from an experimental pavement construction on a low volume road using recycled concrete. The recycled concrete was prepared by replacing a half of coarse aggregate with recycled aggregate. Virgin natural sand was used as fine aggregate together a plasticizer and a fly ash (0.8% and 5% by wt. of cement, respectively). The load bearing capacity of the subbase made of recycled aggregate was acceptable. The length, thickness and width of the pavement were l00m, 20cm and 3m, respectively. From construction experience, it was found that workability and finishability of the recycled concrete mixture were relatively poor, but strengths were satisfactory. Flexural strength, compressive strength and elastic modulus at 28 days were 54Kg/$cm^2$, over 250Kg/$cm^2$, and 220,OOOKg/$cm^2$, respectively. The construction could be performed by hand without much difficulty. The surface was finished smoothly by wet fabric and only minor cracks were found on the surface.
