  • This review describes the involvement of different microorganisms for the recovery of uranium from the ore. Mainly Acidithiobacillus forrooxidans, Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans and Leptospirillum ferrooxidans are found to be the most widely used bacteria in the bioleaching process of uranium. The bioleaching of uranium generally follows indirect mechanism in which bacteria provide the ferric iron required to oxidize $U^{4+}$. Commercial applications of bioleaching have been incorporated for extracting valuable metals, due to its favorable process economics and reduced environmental problems compared to conventional metal recovery processes such as smelting. At present the uranium is recovered through main bioleaching techniques employed by heap, dump and in situ leaching. Process development has included recognition of the importance of aeration of bioheaps, and improvements in stirred tank reactor design and operation. Concurrently, knowledge of the key microorganisms involved in these processes has advanced, aided by advances in molecular biology to characterize microbial populations.

  • Globally, cardiovascular diseases and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are the leading causes of the non-communicable disease burden. Overlapping symptoms such as breathing difficulty and fatigue, with a lack of awareness about COPD among physicians, are key reasons for under-diagnosis and resulting sub-optimal care relative to COPD. Much has been published in the past on the pathogenesis and implications of cardiovascular comorbidities in COPD. However, a comprehensive review of the prevalence and impact of COPD management in commonly encountered cardiac diseases is lacking. The purpose of this study was to summarize the current knowledge regarding the prevalence of COPD in heart failure, ischemic heart disease, and atrial fibrillation. We also discuss the real-life clinical presentation and practical implications of managing COPD in cardiac diseases. We searched PubMed, Scopus, EMBASE, and Google Scholar for studies published 1981-May 2020 reporting the prevalence of COPD in the three specified cardiac diseases. COPD has high prevalence in heart failure, atrial fibrillation, and ischemic heart disease. Despite this, COPD remains under-diagnosed and under-managed in the majority of patients with cardiac diseases. The clinical implications of the diagnosis of COPD in cardiac disease includes the recognition of hyperinflation (a treatable trait), implementation of acute exacerbations of COPD (AECOPD) prevention strategies, and reducing the risk of overuse of diuretics. The pharmacological agents for the management of COPD have shown a beneficial effect on cardiac functions and mortality. The appropriate management of COPD improves the cardiovascular outcomes by reducing hyperinflation and preventing AECOPD, thus reducing the risk of mortality, improving exercise tolerance, and quality of life.

  • According to the Ministry of Employment and Labor's statistics on occupational fatalities in South Korea, more than half of the fatalities in the past five years have occurred in the construction industry. The stuck-by and caught-in-between accidents associated with construction equipment is the major source of fatalities from construction sites. In order to prevent such accidents in construction sites, the government has spent lots of efforts including proposing the "special law on construction safety" and encouraging the implementation of new technology for accident prevention. However, numerous accidents are still occurred at construction sites and further efforts are still required. In this manner, this study developed a collision prevention technique that can prevent collision between equipment and worker by recognizing location and type of the nearby objects through ultrasound scanning. The study conducted a pilot experiment and the analysis results demonstrate the feasibility of achieving high performance in both object recognition and location estimation. The developed technique will contribute to prevent collision accidents at construction sites and provide the supplemental knowledge on developing automated collision prevention system for construction equipment.

  • A seven-month-old castrated male Chihuahua weighing 1.6 kg presented with generalized tonic-clonic seizure following ingestion of isoniazid. Emergency treatment with three doses of diazepam (total 1.5 mg/kg, intravenous [IV]) and phenobarbital (15 mg/kg IV) was administered. The seizure stopped after administration of propofol (constant rate infusion [CRI]; 0.2 mg/kg/min). Blood analyses showed mildly increased serum blood glucose concentration, hyperkalemia, and hyperphosphatemia. On suspicion of isoniazid toxicity, activated charcoal (1 g/kg, orally), lipid emulsion (CRI; 9 mL/hr), and pyridoxine hydrochloride (70 mg/kg IV) were added to the treatment regimen. Twelve hours after presentation, the dog showed increased serum liver enzyme activities, serum blood urea nitrogen, and creatinine concentrations indicating hepatic and renal failure. Twenty-two hours after presentation, blood analysis still revealed increased liver enzyme activities, blood urea nitrogen, and creatinine concentrations with low blood glucose concentration. Twenty-six hours after presentation, the dog's vital signs deteriorated and the owner elected for the dog to be euthanized. This is the first report of the clinical course of isoniazid toxicosis in a dog in South Korea. Furthermore, to our best knowledge, this is the first report where secondary multiple organ failure was observed due to isoniazid toxicosis. Clinicians should be aware of the possibility of isoniazid toxicosis in dogs. Rapid initiation of treatment after clinical recognition is warranted in such cases.

  • Capstone Design, a project-based learning technique, is the most important curriculum that clarifying major knowledge and cultivating the ability to apply through the process of solving problems in the industrial field centered on the student project team. Accordingly, various and extensive studies are being conducted for the successful implementation of capstone design courses. Unlike previous studies, this study aimed to quantitatively analyze the opinions that recorded the experiences and feelings of students who performed capstone design, and used text mining methodologies such as frequency analysis, correlation analysis, topic modeling, and sentiment analysis. As a result of examining the overall opinions of the latter period through frequency analysis and correlation analysis, there was a difference between the languages used by the students in the opinions according to gender and project results. Through topic modeling analysis, 'topic selection' and 'the relationship between team members' showed an increase in occupancy or high occupancy, and topics such as 'presentation', 'leadership', and 'feeling what they felt' showed a tendency to decreasing occupancy. Lastly, sentiment analysis has found that female students showed more neutral emotions than male students, and the passed group showed more negative emotions than the non-passed group and less neutral emotions. Based on these findings, students' practical recognition of the curriculum was considered and implications for the improvement of capstone design were presented.

  • Ecological research relies on the interpretation of large amounts of visual data obtained from extensive wildlife surveys, but such large-scale image interpretation is costly and time-consuming. Using an artificial intelligence (AI) machine learning model, especially convolution neural networks (CNN), it is possible to streamline these manual tasks on image information and to protect wildlife and record and predict behavior. Ecological research using deep-learning-based object recognition technology includes various research purposes such as identifying, detecting, and identifying species of wild animals, and identification of the location of poachers in real-time. These advances in the application of AI technology can enable efficient management of endangered wildlife, animal detection in various environments, and real-time analysis of image information collected by unmanned aerial vehicles. Furthermore, the need for school education and social use on biodiversity and environmental issues using AI is raised. School education and citizen science related to ecological activities using AI technology can enhance environmental awareness, and strengthen more knowledge and problem-solving skills in science and research processes. Under these prospects, in this paper, we compare the results of our early 2013 study, which automatically identified African cichlid fish species using photographic data of them, with the results of reanalysis by CNN deep learning method. By using PyTorch and PyTorch Lightning frameworks, we achieve an accuracy of 82.54% and an F1-score of 0.77 with minimal programming and data preprocessing effort. This is a significant improvement over the previous our machine learning methods, which required heavy feature engineering costs and had 78% accuracy.

  • The concept of the sharing economy, which has shifted the economic paradigm from possession to access to resources, is consistent with the traditional and current roles of public libraries. Thus, this research empirically analyzed the influence relationships between public library use and the sharing economy. Results showed that participation in public library programs serves as a motivational factor for satisfaction with and trust in the sharing economy, while the use of public library facilities and equipment is correlated with attitudes toward and participation in the sharing economy. The use of library collections positively influences sharing intangible resources such as knowledge, information, and personal experience. By contrast, checking out library resources negatively influences the recognition of economic benefits from sharing, which is contrary to claims of library communities. Based on these results, public libraries should aim to have a complementary effect on the sharing economy founded not only on information networks but also human networks grounded in social relationships.
