To obtain the basic data on reclaimed tideland soils, 90 soil samples were collected from 9 tideland reclamation project areas in Korea. The soils consisted of clay (2.0 to 35.0 percents), silt (2.0 to 80.0 percents), and sand (8.0 to 95.0 percents), and were dominantly classified sandy loam and silty loam. The soils had pH of 4.5 to 9.1, organic matter of 0.50 to $19.20g\;kg^{-1}$, total nitrogen of 4 to $1,159mg\;kg^{-1}$, and avaliable phosphorus (as $P2_O_5$) of 3.5 to $147.7mg\;kg^{-1}$. The electrical conductivity in soil saturation-paste extracts (ECe) ranged between $0.62dS\;m^{-1}$ and $31.60dS\;m^{-1}$ and the concentrations of sodium and magnesium ions were higher than those of potassium and calcium ions. The magnitude of the ECe was as low as that of normal level in Nam-Po, Pu-Sa, and Kye-Hwa reclamation project areas having sandy loam texture, but was as high as that of normal level saline-sodic level in Nam-Yang and So-Po reclamation project areas having silty loam texture even though the soils were cultivated more than 10 years as a paddy. Some part of Saemangeum area was surveyed and soil textures were various; some were silt loam and some were sandy loam. The ECe values were very high in topsoil and subsoil.

This study was performed to obtain the basic data analyzing salt movement and desalinization effects, and two different desalinization experiments through leaching and rinsing were carried out, using samples of silt loam soil and silty clay loam soil collected in reclaimed tidelands. The relationships between the electrical conductivity of saturation extract and the electrical conductivity at various dilutions, and the correlations between electrical conductivity, total salt concentration, exchangeable sodium percentage and pH during the desalinization of reclaimed tidelands, were analyzed by the statistical method. The results obtained from this study were summarized as follows: 1.The sample soils used in this study were saline-sodic soils in accordance with the USDA classi- fication system of salt affected soils. 2.The electrical conductivity of saturation extract could be estimated conveniently, using the electrical conductivity of extract from various different soil-water suspensions. 3.The total salt concentration could be expressed in the electrical conductivity, but there was a little difference by soil textures. 4.The regression analysis showed that the relationship between the electrical conductivity of saturation extract and the exchangeable sodium percentage during the desalinization of reclaimed lands could be described by a linear regression equation. 5.The value of pH showed a tendency to increase according as the exchangeable sodium percentage decreased during the desalinization of reclaimed tidelands.
In most agricultural soils, ammonium ($NH_4^+$) from fertilizer is quickly converted to nitrate ($NO_3^-$) by the process of nitrification which is crucial to the efficiency of N fertilizers and their impact on the environment. However, nitrification studies have been studied extensively in agricultural soils, not in a newly reclaimed tidal soil which show saline-sodic and high pH. Therefore, understanding the fate of nitrogen species transformed from urea introduced into reclaimed tidal soil is important for nutrient management and environmental quality. This paper reviewed studies regarding to transformation and fate of nitrogen sources such as urea under the circumstances of a reclaimed tidal soils located in a western coastal area.

This study was carried out to analyze physicochemical properties according to the soil height and to the six types of sites that were used as planting ground in the reclaimed land from the sea, Gwangyang Bay. The physicochemical properties of the soil types were tested by t-test(p<0.01, 0.05), at each of the 6 planting ground sites(p<0.01, 0.05), and at each height(p<0.01) of the planting grounds. These areas were tested by ANOVA and were significantly different. Improved soil was better than reclaimed soil from the sea for Zelkova growth because the improved soil contained lower amounts of pH, ECe, N $a^{+}$, $Ca^{++}$, $Mg^{++}$ SAR. Due to freedom from variables such as salt content in the underground as well as the physical and chemical disturbance of the soil, favorable planting ground for tree growth was recorded at the higher grounds than at the lower ones. Soil detriment to the tree growth in the studied sites included elements such as soil hardness, and the distribution of sodium in the tree root systems. The planting grounds for the favorable growth of landscape trees were determined in the following order: the grounds of mounding> the coved ground of improved soil, and the filled ground of improved soil.l.l.l.

Transport of heavy metals such as Cd is affected by several rate-limiting processes including adsorption and desorption by exchange reactions in soils. In this study, column transport and batch kinetic experiments were performed to assess Cd mobility in a double-layered soil with a reclaimed saline and sodic soil (SSS) as top soil and macroporous granule (MPG) as a bottom layer. For individual soil layer having different physical and chemical properties, Cd was considered to be nonlinear reactivity with the soil matrix in layered soils. The dispersive equation for reactive solutes was solved with three types of boundary conditions for the interface between soil layers. The adsorption of Cd with respect to the saline-sodic sandy loam and the MPG indicated that the nature of the sites or the mechanisms involved in the sorption process of Cd was different and the amounts of Cd for both of samples increases with increasing amounts of equilibrium concentration whereas the amount of Cd adsorbed in saline-sodic sandy loam soil was higher than that in MPG. The results of breakthrough curve indicating relative Cd retardation accompanied by layer material and sequence during leaching showed that the number of pore volumes to reach the maximum relative concentration of 1 increased in the order of MPG, SSS, and double layer of SSS-MPG. Breakthrough curves (BTCs) from column experiments were well predicted with our double-layered model where independently derived solute physical and retention parameters were implemented.
Chenges in respiration of the soils collected from the reclaimed tidal soil in Chogi-ri, Kanghwa Island and treated with organic matters are presented. The measurement of the respiration for the smaples, which were incubated for 0,2,4 and 5 weeks, were carried out by using Warburg's respirometer. While the respirations of the samples added by organic matters were increased 6.7 - 28.0 times compared with that 0 week during the incubation in case of 5-year soil, the respiration in case of 3-year soil were increased 3.3-11.8 times. Thus, the effect of adding organic matters on the respiration of the experimented soils, as this indicates, was much higher for the soil of 5-year area than that of 30-year area. And for the organic matters Salicornia was most effective and then Suaeda and Oryzae. The samples treated with Salicornia and Suaeda showed their highest respiration rate at the 4th week, but the one with Oryzae was measured to increase progressively during 5 weeks experimented. Regarding the salinity, content of organic matters and number of bacteria, in each intact soil experimented, 5-year soil samples had much poor habitat then 30-year soil for the activity of soil microorganisms, but according to the result mentioned above, it is firmly believed that the addition of organic matters on the saline soil is one of the best means to change the reclaimed tidal land into arable land with less time duration.

To identify controlling factors for spatial variation of vegetation in reclaimed tidal flats, plant stands were investigated in a newly reclaimed as well as three matured tidal flats, and a natural tidal flat in the midwest coast of Korea. Electrical conductivity of saturated soil extract (ECe) was measured to assess soil salinity. Soil salinity differed significantly among plant stands. Depending on soil salinity, plant species showed different niches: glycophyte predominated low saline spots, halophyte predominated high saline spots. Soil salinity for each plant habitats was in order of as follow: bare soil or plant wilted > mixed pioneer halophyte > pioneer halophyte > mixed with pioneer halophyte and facultative halophyte > mixed facultative halophyte > facultative halophyte > mixed with facultative halophyte and glycophyte > glycophyte > mixed glycophyte stands. These results suggested that plant distribution might have been influenced by spatial edaphic gradient (soil salinity), and thus it could be utilized as an indicator for field soil salinity gradient. Relationship between soil salinity and plant distribution was not different among the aged reclaimed tidal flats, suggesting that the vegetative population might have changed into a similar direction since the reclamation.

This study was carried out to analyze physico-chemical properties of soils at the ground of landscape planting in reclaimed land from the sea on Kwangyang Bay, South Korea. Physico-chemical properties of soils at each planting grounds were tested by ANOVA and were significantly(P<0.01) different. The difference came from the soil properties of the covered soil, the disturbance applied to the soil with land use and the accumulation of organic matter after landscape planting. Soil hardness, pH, ECe, Na and K level were in a stable condition at high then low of ground height for landscape planting. Organic matter accumulation was greater at lower planting grounds then top and slope ground of big mounding. The planting grounds of favorable growth for landscape trees were determined as following order : the slope ground and the top ground of big mounding>the ground of medium mounding>the coved ground of improve soil>the lower ground of big mounding>the filled ground of improve soil.

This laboratory study was carried out in order to produce fundamental data for analyzing salt movement and desalinization effects, using samples of silt loam soil collected in Gyehwado and Daeho reclaimed tidelans, and samples of silty clay loam soil collected in Kimie tideland. Desalinization experiments with gypsum treatment were performed to analyze changes of the hydraulicc conductivity with changes of the soil property and the salt concentration during the desalinization of reclaimed tideland soils by leaching through the subsufface drainage, and correlations between factors infl uencing the reclamation of salt affected soils were analyzed by the statistical method. The results were summarized as follows: 1. The reclaimed tideland soils used in this study were saline-sodic soils with the high exchangeable sodium percentage and the high electrical conductivity. 2. Changes of the hydraulic conductivity with the amount of leaching water and the leaching time elapsed were affected by the amount of gypsum except exchangeable sodium and clay contents. The regression equation between the depth of water leached per unit depth of soil (Dw / Ds : X) or the square root of the leaching time elapsed (T $^1$$^2$ : X) and the relative hydraulic conductivity (HCr:Y) could be expressed in Y=a . bx. 3. The more exchangeable sodium and clay contents regardless of the amount of gypsum, the more the leaching time was required until a given volume of water was leached through the soil profile. The regression analysis showed that the relationship between the depth of water leached per unit depth of soil(Dw /Ds:X) and the square root of the leaching time elapsed(T$^1$$^2$ :Y) could be described by Y=a . Xb. 4. The hydraulic conductivity was influenced to a major degree by the salt concentration provided that the electrical conductivity was below 10 mmhos / cm during the desalinization of reclaimed tideland soils. The regression equation between the relative electrical conductivity ( ECr : X) and the relative hydraulic conductivity (HCr:Y) could be expressed in Y=a + b . X-$^1$. 5. In conclusion, the hydraulic conductivity, leaching requirements and the leaching time elapsed can be estimated when the salt concentration decreases to a certain level during the desalinization of reclaimed tidelands, and the results may be applied to the analysis of salt movement and desalinization effects.
Accumulation of excessive salt in Reclaimed coastal tidelands can reduce crop yields, reduce the effectiveness of irrigation, degradation of soil structure, and affect other soil properties. These salts has shown to cause specific ions in the plant over a period of time leads to ion toxicity or ion imbalance and a continuous osmotic phase that prevents water uptake by plants due to osmotic pressure of saline soil solution. This review focuses on the characteristics of salt-affected soils, mechanisms of salt-tolerance plants, desalinization technology, and soil management to maintain sustainable agro-ecosystem in salt-affected soils.
