BACKGROUND: Through Saemangeum development project, 283 ㎢ of new land is planned to be created and the reclaimed land of 89.7 ㎢ will be used as agricultural land. Therefore, monitoring of soil salinity is required to evaluate the suitability of the land for agricultural purposes. METHODS AND RESULTS: We investigated changes of soil physico-chemical properties, including electric conductivity (EC), of the Saemangeum reclaimed tidal land (1,195 ha) from 2008 to 2017 to obtain basic data for suitable soil management of the Saemangeum reclaimed tidal land. Soil samples were collected from the sites spaced 200 meters apart from each other. Soil analysis results showed that average soil EC was 14.5 dS m-1 in 2008, and decreased to 6.5 dS m-1 in 2014 and to 0.9 dS m-1 in 2017. Accordingly, the soil area below soil EC 4.7 dS m-1 (accepted as farmable soil salinity) increased; 25.0% in 2008, 54.3% in 2014, and 96.9% in 2017. The annual decrease in soil EC was described as y = -1.5756x + 14.6 (R2= 0.96), where y = soil EC and x = elapsed years since 2008. CONCLUSION: The soil salinity have decreased to a level for cultivation of most edible crops. However, since the soil chemical properties, such as soil organic matter were inadequate for the cultivation of crops, it was suggested that management of soil fertility would be important for efficient agricultural use of Saemangeum reclaimed land.
This study investigated the runoff from rice paddy located on reclaimed fine sandy loam soil to provide data for the development of policies to protect water quality of estuaries. Total N (TN), Total P (TP) concentrations and runoff loads at outlet were monitored from 2006 to 2008. Soil phosphate adsorptivity was measured and compared with typical paddy soil in watersheds. TP concentration of the paddy water and TP runoff loads were much greater than those of typical paddy field in watershed because phosphate adsoptivity in reclaimed paddy field of fine sandy loam appeared to be a third of those of typical paddy soils by relatively low soil OM and high sand content of the reclaimed soil. Thus, nutrient runoff, particularly phosphate from the reclaimed paddy field needs to be managed more thoroughly to protect estuarine water quality.
In this study, we carried out the evaluation of EPDM(Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer) reclaimed rubber mixing with natural rubber at various mixing ratio to reuse as rubber filler. The scorch time and moony viscosity was analyzed to evaluate the effect of cure behavior. And also, we analyzed the tensile strength, the elongation at break and cure time to evaluate the variation of cure behavior. As the results, the scorch time and optimal cure time was decreased according to the increasing of EPDM reclaimed rubber. However, the moony viscosity was increased at each mixing ratio. In case of the added EPDM reclaimed rubber was 20 phr(parts by weight per 100 parts by weight of rubber), the hardness and specific gravity was increased a little. The hardness and specific gravity was increased in rapidly under 40 phr of the added EPEM reclaimed rubber. The tensile strength and elongation at break of the compound of natural and EPDM reclaimed rubber was rapidly decreased compared with its natural rubber when the ratio of adding EPDM reclaimed rubber was over 40 phr.

Many reclaimed tideland projects in Korea have been conducted to secure the food self-sufficiency. In fact, the domestic food self-sufficiency has been greatly improved and reclaimed tideland projects contribute to Korea's economic and social development directly or indirectly replacing agricultural lands from urbanization, industrialization. As result, current self-sufficiency of rice reach the demand(104.6%) while rate of upland crops has less than 30% of self-sufficiency rate and corn, wheat, soybeans, etc. are virtually dependent on imports. Domestic price of crop is expected to be unstable by trend of international grain prices. Therefore, developing reclaimed tidelands as upland which is originally constructed for paddy fields could be a good option to become steady in domestic crop market and dedicate to ensure a stable food security. The study to prepare measures for dealing with disasters in reclaimed tidelands of west coast district is required in order to utilize those sites for infra construction of multi-utilization in those sites and The result of flooding analysis in this study can suggest policy direction for practical utilization of reclaimed tidelands in yellow sea area.
BACKGROUND: Development of water recycle technologies is important for human health and sustainable agriculture. However, few studies have been conducted to examine the purification methods or the water quality of reclaimed wastewater in Korea. METHODS AND RESULTS: In this study, the different wastewaters including reclaimed wastewater and waste nutrient solution (NS) were evaluated. The changes of water quality in reclaimed wastewater and NS were determined using ultraviolet (UV) treatment and sand filtration with charcoal. Our results showed that one of the most critical limitations of reusing wastewater was the presence of harmful pathogens that possibly cause human health risks. CONCLUSION(s): This study suggests that the application of UV treatment or combined with sand filtration on reclaimed wastewater and waste NS effectively removes the total coliform bacteria below the harmful or acceptable level. For future studies, a long-term field monitoring after applying reclaimed wastewater or NS is needed.

In Korea, small-scale reclaimed areas have been suffering from many problems because of the lack of comprehensive developing strategy although considerable investments have been inputed by the public sector since 1970's. For 3 reclaimed sites in Chonnam Province choser as case study areas, the analysis, the second attempt of widely-spanned studies on areal conditions, concentrated on their farming and economic conditions. Its results were as follows ; 1. Although farming pattern has been transferred to the full4ime rice cropping type by the creation of reclaimed paddy field, farming size in the areas has not been increased more than that in existing agricultural areas. This means that agricultural planning should be included in the initial stage of reclamation projects, especially with reference to the substantial enlargement of farming size. 2. Block parcelling of severely fragmented holdings in new and old lands should be carried out, which can make farming activities efficient and farming route shortened. In large-scale reclaimed areas, new village planning could be considered in its central zone for efficent farming. 3. Because soil in the areas contains much more salt and water than that in other areas, new design methodology should be introduced for the efficient use of agricultural machines in reclaimed areas. 4. There are deep-seated economic problems in reclaimed area, which have been caused by very poor level and agriculturally dominated structure of household income. These problems should motivate farmers to give up positive action for qualitative and quantitative improvement in farming.

The total area of domestic reclaimed lands is 54,379 ha, and among these, 30,394 ha can be agriculturally available. To increase an agricultural availability of reclaimed land, controlled horticultural products that can be highly profitable have come to the fore. However, as being characteristically concerning, when original glasshouse is intactly applied in reclaimed land, it is unsafe on account of ground subsidence and, even if ground were reinforced, it has a problem by high cost. So a new greenhouse model would be necessary taking into account not only cost-efficiency but also safety with relatively light-weight one. Before this, this paper estimated acceptance rate of controlled horticultural complexes in reclaimed land and new greenhouse model for 414 farmers. The annual rental fee is 129,712,500 won/ha, considering the interest rate (2.5 %) of the investment, the depreciation cost of the facilities (straight line depreciation method, 20 years of service life estimated), and government subsidy rate (50 %) which resulted in a sufficient number of intended tenants with the acceptance rate of 0.33. The results of this paper may contribute to the government's policies for reclaimed land.

Seismic motion amplification owing to the input motion level at bedrock is one of the important topics to understand various geomaterials behavior. The extremely valuable borehole records at Port Island were obtained during the 1995 Hyogoken Nanbu Earthquake and also before and after the main event. In this study, the seismic motion amplification at the soft reclaimed ground was discussed. Comparison of measured records with numerical simulation results were made with focus on seismic motion amplification characteristics at the soft reclaimed ground.
