  • This study aimed to investigate the current state and suggest future directions of children's and young adult literature education in Library and Information Science(LIS) departments in Korean universities. Courses related to children's and young adult literature in 34 LIS departments in Korea were investigated, and in-depth interviews and surveys were conducted with professors and instructors who have experience teaching courses related to children's and young adult literature in LIS departments. The results show there are on average 1.7 courses related to children's and young adult literature in undergraduate programs. 36% of schools had less than one course related to children's and young adult literature, and most of them were Reading Guidance courses. 83%(24 out of 29 people)of the survey participants said they teach children's and young adult literature in their classes. The professors and instructors spent the most of their lecture time on picture books. They spent the minimum time on genres such as SF, Fantasy, and manhwa. Lack of time to teach so many things in short 16 weeks made them feel rushed and distressed. Some survey respondents regarded themselves as non-experts in children's and young adult literature, even though they had competency in that field, which shows the general atmosphere in the LIS field that LIS people are not qualified enough to be experts in children's literature. All interviewees and some survey respondents insisted children's and young adult literature education in the LIS departments should be practical. Professors and instructors tried their best to incorporate diverse teaching methods, including discussions, storytelling, writing reviews, so their students can acquire proper knowledge on children's and young adult library services.

  • The purpose of this study is to derive a major trend through exhaustive search of papers contained in "Journal of Korean Library and Information Science Society" that has been published for 40 years. Therefore, 1,365 papers published in "Journal of Korean Library and Information Science Society" from 1974 to 2013 were analyzed. The analysis criteria include detailed subject and joint research status, research fund supporting, research area etc. The analysis results are as follows. First, as for research topics, papers on library and information science were the most, 452 papers followed by resource organization, 213 papers. The rest was found in the order of information service 188, information science 155 papers, reading guidance 101, library management 91, bibliography 84, collection development 58, archives and records management 20 papers. Through this, it was analyzed that information science is on an increasing trend while bibliography is on an decreasing trend and records management shows sluggish production. Second, as for research fund supporting, it turned out that 428 papers were funded and 315 papers among them were supported by the university while the remaining 108 papers were supported by the government. Third, joint research is on an increasing trend and unlike the fact that there have been no papers for early, papers were found to increase up to 303 papers for recent. Fourth, unlike the early phenomenon concentrated in Daegu, research areas showed even distribution throughout the country in recent years. This showed that it has grown from certain area-based academic journal to nationwide academic journal.

  • This paper studies and analyzes the effect of illustrations in picture books on time representation with fictional picture books as the study scope. In this paper, the time type of picture books can be divided into time point, timeline and time rhythm, referring to case analysis from time symbolic elements, picture layout and picture sequence respectively. First of all, time symbolic elements are referred to the time point and time rhythm. The materialized time symbolic element is things that can directly represent time and trigger associations with time; the color symbolic element means the color changes in the real world within a certain time; the contrast of light and shadow corresponds to the changes in a day. Fast-moving objects will be presented with dashed or blurred lines, while static, stable and slow objects will be depicted with solid lines. Secondly, the picture layout of illustrations in picture books is suitable for representing the content of the timeline and describing the sequence or causality of events. Finally, the picture sequence can represent the timeline, time rhythm and "synchronicity". It will make use of visual logic to win readers' trust in time information expressed in pictures, and then follow and connect viewpoints on the basis of adapting to reading habits. The essence of time representation in picture books is to express time by space, and use different combinations of elements in space and visual guidance to convey time information.

  • Online communities have become substantial aspects of people's daily lives. However, only a few communities succeed and attract the majority of users, whereas the vast majority struggle for survival. When various communities coexist, important factors should be identified and examined to maintain attraction and achieve success. The concept of coexistence as been extensively explored in organizational ecology literature. However, given the similarities and differences between online communities and traditional organizations, the direct application of organizational theories to online contexts should be cautiously explored. In this study, we follow the roadmap proposed by Davis et al. (2007) in conducting agent-based modeling and simulation study to develop a novel theory based on the previous literature. In the case of two coexisting communities, we find that community size and participation costs can significantly affect the development of a community. A large community can attract a high number of active members who frequently log in. By contrast, low participation costs can encourage the reading and posting behaviors of members. We also observe the important influence of the distribution of interests on the topic trends of communities. A community composed of a population that focuses on only one topic can quickly converge on the topic regardless of whether the initial topic is broad or focused. This simulation model provides theoretical implications to literature and practical guidance to operators of online communities.

  • This study was conducted to provide the basic data necessary for the improvement of the teaching method for basic nursing practice as well as the effectiveness of the practice by examining the students' competency in cleansing enema after doing the self study instead of the traditional education. To examine the competency in cleansing enema after the self study, this study is an one group pretest-posttest design that subjects did the enema practice through the self study. The subjects were 89 sophomore students at Y University. College of Nursing. In basic nursing lab practice class, cleansing enema self study module was given to the students which was developed by the researcher based on the literature review and asked them to finish doing the pre study and checking the self study evaluation criteria after reading the goal, learning activities and theoretical guideline. After watching the video tape, students practiced the process in the module by themselves. For the competency in cleansing enema. repeated autonomous practices were done during the open lab other than the regular class. Whenever the practice was done, the frequency and time were measure and documented. When the student felt confident through repeated practices, the competency was evaluated by the researcher and two assistants based on the evaluation criteria. And the process was repeated till the student could perform all the items on evaluation criteria completely. The data were collected for 42 days from Oct. 15 to Nov. 26 in 1996. Collected data were analyzed by frequency, percentage, Pearson correlation coefficient and variance analysis. The results are summarized as follows : 1. 43.2% of the students were favorable to nursing and 63.6% like lecture, but 71.6% like practice. So they were more interested in practice than in lecture. 2. 62.3% of the students scored high in written test, 97.8% scored high in practice. So the practice score was better. 3. The frequency of repeated practice to pass the test ranged from 1 to 4 and the average is 2.2. 4. The average time needed in preparation and the performance was nearly the same regardless of the frequency. It took 5 to 38 minutes for those who passed the test after practicing once and the average was 16 minutes. 5 to 60 minutes were taken for those who practiced twice to pass the test and the average was 21 minutes. Those who passed the test after three practices needed 8 to 30 minutes and the average was 15 minutes, which was similar to the time that the students who passed the test for the first trial. Only one student passed the test after 4 practices and it took 10 minutes. 5. 64% of the students agreed that the context and the content of the module were appropriate for the self study and 68.2% were satisfied. And 71.9% said that the module helped them to practice the enema self study 6. Though only 42% of the students were satisfied with the video. 50.6% said that it was helpful for the self study. 7. 52.3% of the students were satisfied with the self study method, and 86.6% obtained self-confidence when performing the enema. 8. The lower the student's practice score was, the more practices were needed for them to pass the test(r=-.213, P<.05). As a result, for performing the enema practice competently, two or more practice opportunities were needed to be given. And it is possible to obtain the less complex nursing skills through the self study, when enough learning resources and assistance such as learning guidance or video tapes are provided. Based on this study. I want to suggest that. 1. There must be college policy that can support the new method instead of the traditional learning method for the students to attain the proficiency in basic nursing skills. 2. The assistant materials should be developed as soon as possible to promote the self study of basic nursing skills.

  • This research reviewed the HIPAA/HITECH, 21st Century Cures Act, Common Law, and private Guidances from the perspectives in protecting and utilitizing the medical data, while implications were followed. First, the standards for protection and utilization are relatively clearly regulated through single law on personal medical information in the United States. The HIPAA has been introduced in 1996 as fundamental act on protection of medical data. Medical data was divided into personally identifiable information, non-identifying information, and limited dataset under HIPAA. Regulations on de-identification measures for medical information, objects for deletion of limited data sets, and agreement on prohibition of data re-identification were stipulated. Moreover, in the 21st Century Cures Act regulated mutual compatibility for data sharing, prohibition of data blocking, and strengthening of accessibility of data subjects. Common Law introduced comprehensive consent system and clearly stipulates procedures. Second, the regulatory system is relatively simplified and clearly stipulated in the United States. To be specific, the expert consensus and the safe harbor system were introduced as an anonymity measure for identifiable medical information, which clearly defines the process while increasing trust. Third, the protection of the rights of the data subject is specified, the duty of explanation is specified in detail, while the information right of the consumer (opt-out procedure) for identification information is specified. For instance, the HHS rule and FDA regulations recognize the comprehensive consent system for human research, but the consent procedure, method, and requirements are stipulated through the common rule. Fourth, in the case of the United States, a trust-based system is being used throughout the health and medical data legislation. To be specific, Limited Data Sets are allowed to use in condition to the researcher's agreement to prohibit re-identification, and de-identification or consent process is simplified under the system.
