  • This research primarily aimed to investigate proficient and less proficient EFL readers' awareness and experiences about learning to read and reading in English. The secondary purpose was to explore the participants' reading strategies, and to discover how the genres of English texts influence their reading processing behaviors. The participants consisted of four college students in engineering aged 21-25 years. Three data sources were employed: questionnaires, interviews, and think-alouds. The findings revealed that: (1) the proficient EFL readers judged themselves to be good readers, while the less proficient EFL readers judged themselves to be fair readers; (2) unknown vocabulary was perceived to be the major impediment to reading comprehension; the think-aloud data, however, demonstrated that unknown vocabulary did not significantly interfere with their reading comprehension; (3) regardless of the genre of the text, the participants employed similar reading strategies; (4) the participants were more likely to tolerate ambiguity and predict the content when reading the narrative text than the expository text; (5) there was no set of strategies that distinguished proficient EFL readers from less proficient EFL readers; and (6) when identifying problems, the proficient EFL readers used fix-up strategies more effectively and were better able to provide satisfactory solutions than their counterparts. Pedagogical implications for EFL reading instruction are discussed.

  • Mendeley reader count is good evidence of the early impact of scientific output since it appears before citations. This paper aims to scope and compare Mendeley readers of Library and Information Science (LIS) articles published from India and China. Mendeley readership data for the highly cited 1,000 articles in Web of Science are extracted using Webometric Analyst for both countries and are analysed using Excel and SPSS. The findings reveal that LIS articles that are published from China got more readers as compared to LIS articles published from India with an excess of 97 readers per paper on Mendeley. The occupational status of readers tells that PhD students are the top readers for both the countries' publications, followed by masters students. Discipline-wise readership shows that readers were spread across 29 different fields, with the highest readers from business, management and accounting, followed by computer science for both countries' publications. Location-wise readership depicts that the top engaged readers are from the United States for both the countries' publications. Finally, the study reports a positive association between citations and Mendeley bookmarks, justifying that Mendeley readership can be used to measure the early research impact of LIS scholarship in both countries.

  • We evaluated the usability of two kinds types of recently commercialized e-books through an analysis of their protocols, compared the time required to read an e-book with that for a paper book, and compared text display sizes that were easy to read for aged and young readers, under identical conditions. This showed clear problems with the usability of e-books for aged and young readers. It was found that it took longer for aged readers to read text in an e-book than for young readers, and that the size of text that aged readers found easy to read was different than for young readers.

  • This study aimed to explore EFL learners' beliefs and preferences about reading tasks and to examine the reading processes that they use for making sense of text. The subjects were comprised of 107 college students who were non-English majors and aged 19-28 years. Based on scores achieved on a reading comprehension test, they were divided into two groups (more-skilled and less-skilled readers) and asked to respond to a survey in class. The results of the survey revealed that: (1) a majority rate themselves as fair readers, which might be indicative of the insecurity they feel toward L2 reading; (2) authentic texts (especially magazines) and popular media appear to be their favorite reading materials; (3) unknown vocabulary is a major impediment to their L2 reading comprehension; (4) the more-skilled readers manifest a meaning centered view of reading, whereas the less-skilled readers center on vocabulary; and (5) both groups employ a multistrategic approach to L2 reading; however, the less-skilled readers are less successful in determining the meaning of unknown vocabulary. Pedagogical implications for EFL classroom teachers are provided.

  • Readers' advisory service has become more important for public libraries as one of the critical service areas in terms of supporting libraries patrons' reading. This study aims to discover major types of readers' advisory services provided through public libraries' web sites. Contents of 200 public libraries' home pages in U. S. were analyzed and nine areas were identified as the major readers' advisory areas. This study also proves that American public libraries are diversly communicating with their patrons and providing user-oriented advisory services. • The purpose of this study is to explore whether reading picturebooks portraying children's play assists adult readers to recall their childhood play memories according to the narrative model of human development. In this study, adult readers recalled their play memories before and after reading a picturebook depicting children's play. Adult readers' responses to the picturebooks were also collected. The types of play from their memories were categorized and the responses were qualitatively analyzed through open coding. The results indicated that first, before reading picturebooks portraying children's play, the type of play that adult readers mostly recalled was games with rules which happened outdoor. Second, after reading a picturebook, adult readers recalled new play memories which contained more detailed elements of narratives. Third, most adult readers responded to picturebooks either emotionally or aesthetically. This study suggests the perspective on picturebooks as a literature and art genre for readers from birth to death. In addition, as an evocative object, a picturebooks could assist adult readers to recall and rediscover their childhood.

  • This study investigated how many and which articles readers read in daily newspapers. Distinguished from previous research that measured readers' perception of their reading habits, this study picked up readers who read the newspaper in the morning, showed them every article in the newspaper, and asked them whether they read each article. This method enhanced the accuracy of measuring subjects‘ reading behavior. According to the results, 6.2% of the readers read at least half of the articles of the general section in the newspaper. Fewer readers went over the economic section of the newspaper. It was 4.1% of the readers. There were only 1.1% of readers who did not read any article of the general section, but the rate soared to 26.5% for the economic section. Many newspaper readers did not skip the first five pages of the newspaper, however the highest readership pages were found in the national coverage located in the middle of the general section. On the other hand, few readers read the articles on pages covering culture, international issues, and people. Readership of the top stories showed some unexpected results. The top stories of national coverage located in the middle of the general section were read by more readers than the top stories of the front pages. This study also investigated the difference between young and old readers. The readers of twenties and thirties did not read as many top stories on major pages and editorials as the readers of forties and older.

  • RTLS (Real Time Locating Systems) are used to track and identify the location of objects in real time. RTLS generally consist of tags, readers and engine etc. and applied in various environments. One problem encountered in RTLS is constraints for setting up readers according to environments. In these challenging environments, it is necessary to develop techniques that can use mobile readers. As mobile reader increase, whole reader increase. And it is necessary to develop technique that can select useful readers. Selected readers including mobile readers take effect performance of RTLS. This paper introduces the technique for selecting good readers using the convex hull algorithm. The result show the good performance which based on tag's location error and reduce the networking overhead.
