Real-time BCC Volume Isosurface Ray Casting on the GPU (GPU를 이용한 실시간 BCC 볼륨 등가면 레이 캐스팅)

  • This paper presents a real-time GPU (graphics processing unit) ray casting scheme for rendering isosurfaces of BCC (body-centered cubic) volume datasets. A quartic spline field is built using the 7-direction box-spline filter accompanied with a quasi-interpolation prefilter. To obtain an interactive rendering speed on the graphics hardware, the shader code was optimized to avoid lookup table and conditional branches and to minimize data fetch overhead. Compared to previous implementations, our work outperforms the comparable one by more than 20% and the rendering quality is superior than others.

  • In this paper, we propose a new descriptor for 3D model retrieval based on shape information. The proposed method consists of two steps including ray casting method and spherical harmonic function, considering geometric properties of model. In the ray casting method, an adaptive sampling is performed for external shape information. By increasing shape information included in the descriptor, we improve the discriminating power of the proposed descriptor. The coefficients of spherical harmonic function are adaptively calculated, considering geometric frequency characteristics. This makes the descriptor more compact and concise without decreasing the retrieval performance. By combining two methods, we achieve more improved retrieval results.

The Restoration Technology and Scientific Analysis of Bronze Mirror with Fine Linear Designs (청동잔무늬거울의 복원제작기술과 과학적 분석)

  • Bronze Mirror with fine linear designs in the bronze age shows the greatest alloy and casting skills of the day and presents the highest level of handcrafting and molding techniques. Lately, Lost-wax casting and sand-mould casting were used for the restoration of the national treasures of No. 141 and No. 143 Bronze Mirror with fine linear designs. Also the Principle Component Analysis, Microstructure Analysis, X-ray and SEM-EDS analysis were carried out on the restored Bronze Mirror with fine linear designs. Bronze Mirror that is made of sand-mould casting, hardly has a eutectoid and it is observed as a ${\alpha}$ dendrite. In contrast, Bronze Mirror that is made of lost-wax casting, the eutectoid has found through the ${\alpha}$ dendrite. As we compare lost-wax casting to the sand-mould casting through an analysis of restored Bronze Mirror, mostly, sand-mould casting has better castability and it seems that it brings a clear and equal Bronze Mirror as it has a low cooling rate. In this way, we are able to confirm that there is a big difference between the method by lost-wax casting and by sand-mould casting through an analysis of microstructure and restored Bronze Mirror. If such research will be continued, it will be an opportunity that investigates diverse methods of production techniques.

Development of a Housing Component for an Auto-compressor Using Vacuum Ladling Die Casting (진공급탕식 다이캐스팅법을 이용한 자동차 콤프레서용 하우징 부품 개발)

  • A vacuum ladling die casting system is suggested as a means to obtain a high vacuum level. A high vacuum of 17.8 mmHg is obtained by sealing the inner space of the mould. The sample product is a rear-head housing for an auto-compressor, and the die-casting with 6-cavities was conducted. The flow analysis shows that the filling speed during vacuum ladling is faster than for a non-vacuum system. The air holes in the sample product were too small to be seen with the naked eye in X-ray films. Density tests show that the high vacuum ladling system reduces the internal porosity as much as 57.8% when compared to the non-vacuum system. A defective rate of only 0.17% was found from leak testing. The results of this research prove that the high vacuum die-casting process is useful for manufacturing of aluminium components under high internal pressure.

Microstructures and Mechanical Properties of Pure Titanium Casting Specimens with Mold Temperatures (순수 티타늄 주조체의 주형온도에 따른 미세조직 및 기계적 성질)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the change of microstructures and mechanical properties of pure titanium casting specimens as a function of mold temperatures. Methods: The pure titanium castings were fabricated using the centrifugal vacuum casting method with different mold temperatures of $200{\sim}500^{\circ}C$. The resulting castings were characterized by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and vicker,s hardness tester. Results: In case of the mold temperatures over $400^{\circ}C$, the porosity, surface crack and large grain size were observed in resulting castings. Conclusion: In this work, The most suitable mold temperature in casting of pure titanium was $300^{\circ}C$.

  • This article aims to introduce the synchrotron radiation for its utilization in the casting and solidification fields as an unique tool for observation of real time phenomena of molten metal during solidification. General features of the synchrotron radiation were briefly introduced for readers in the casting and solidification fields, with no background regarding to synchrotron radiation. And basic principles of imaging technologies using synchrotron light for in-situ observation of molten metal were explained together with exemplary research works, which were reported on the casting and solidification fields in recent years. As a practical guide, real time observation of Al-Si casting alloy was introduced with experimental facilities, image acquisition, and processing together with representative results.

  • Low firing temperature substrate were synthesized through tape casting and sintering of glass with cordierite composition and then their properties were investigated. Even though the dielectric properties and XRD patterns of substrates, obtained by tape casting and sintering at 900~100$0^{\circ}C$ for various periods, were similar to those of substrates obtained by dry pressing, the sinterability was enhanced. The substrates were thin and the size was 0.6$\times$50$\times$50mm. From the results of dielectric properties, the sinterability and X-ray diffraction pattern, the proper condition for cofiring process with conductor, Cu, was 90$0^{\circ}C$ for 1h. The properties of the substrate are as follows; the dielectric constant was 5.31(at 1MHz), the dissipation factor was 0.0028, the apparent porosity was 0.28% and the main crystalline phase was $\alpha$-cordierite.

A Study on the Effect of Inclusions on the Fatigue Life of Titanium Investment Castings (티타늄 정밀주조품의 피로수명에 미치는 개재물의 영향에 관한 연구)

  • Inclusions in Ti investment castings are generally known to have detrimental effects on the performance of the castings. However, actual inclusions are infrequent and hard to be located. As a result, it is extremely difficult to obtain sufficient amount of fatigue test specimens of titanium investment castings having inclusions in the gage section. Thus, in-depth research of the adverse influence of inclusions is also hindered. To address this problem, a new casting methodology of specimens containing hard alpha inclusions was developed in this study. To guarantee successful introduction of an inclusion and casting, a carefully designed mold with 8 legs and a special tool were employed. After solidification, castings were cut, and X-ray radiography determined that the inclusions were successfully incorporated into the castings. The castings were further prepared to obtain multiple test specimens and they were fatigue-tested consecutively. Fractography analysis confirmed that fatigue cracks initiated at the hard alpha inclusion. In a nonlinear regression model, the fatigue life can be modeled as an exponential function with a negative exponent of the cross-sectional area of an inclusion. The fatigue life of Ti specimens containing inclusions is inversely proportional to the cross-sectional area of an inclusion.

Accelerating GPU-based Volume Ray-casting Using Brick Vertex (브릭 정점을 이용한 GPU 기반 볼륨 광선투사법 가속화)

  • Recently, various researches have been proposed to accelerate GPU-based volume ray-casting. However, those researches may cause several problems such as bottleneck of data transmission between CPU and GPU, requirement of additional video memory for hierarchical structure and increase of processing time whenever opacity transfer function changes. In this paper, we propose an efficient GPU-based empty space skipping technique to solve these problems. We store maximum density in a brick of volume dataset on a vertex element. Then we delete vertices regarded as transparent one by opacity transfer function in geometry shader. Remaining vertices are used to generate bounding boxes of non-transparent area that helps the ray to traverse efficiently. Although these vertices are independent on viewing condition they need to be reproduced when opacity transfer function changes. Our technique provides fast generation of opaque vertices for interactive processing since the generation stage of the opaque vertices is running in GPU pipeline. The rendering results of our algorithm are identical to the that of general GPU ray-casting, but the performance can be up to more than 10 times faster.
