  • The acoustic vowel space has been used as an acoustic parameter in dysarthric speech. The aim of this work was to examine mathematical formulae for acoustic vowel space and to apply these to Korean speakers with idiopathic Parkinson's disease(IPD). Five acoustic parameters were chosen from earlier works and one new parameter was proposed, the pentagonal vowel space. The six parameters included triangular vowel space (3 area), irregular quadrilateral vowel space (4 area), irregular pentagonal vowel space (5 area), vowel articulatory index (VAI), formant centralization ratio (FCR) and F2i/F1u ratio (F2 ratio). An experimental group of 32 IPD patients(male:female=16:16) and a control group of twenty healthy people (male:female=8:12) participated in the study and repeated vowels (/a-i-u-e-o/) three times. A correlation analysis was performed among the six parameters, 2-way ANOVA was done with gender and groups as independent factors, and an independent sample t-test was conducted between the male and the female group as post hoc comparison. All parameters were highly correlated with each other and only the FCR showed a high negative correlation with the others. The results of ANOVA showed a significant difference in F2 ratio, 3 area, 4 area and 5 area between gender and in 4 area and 5 area between groups. For the male members of the two groups, significant statistical differences were found in all parameters whereas no such differences were found for the female members. These findings indicated that the vowel space of the female group was wider than the vowel space of the male group. These differences may have been caused by gender-specific speech styles rather than by patho-physiological mechanisms. We also claim that the pentagonal vowel space is better than the other vowel spaces at representing the disordered speech in natural speech situations.

  • An application is presented of a modified Vlasov model to the free vibration analysis of plates resting on elastic foundations. The effects of the subsoil depth, the ratio of the plate dimensions, the ratio of the subsoil depth to the plate dimension in the longer direction, and the value of the vertical deformation parameter within the subsoil on the frequency parameters of plates on an elastic foundation are investigated. This analysis has been caried out by the aid of a computer program. The first ten frequency parameters are presented in tabular and the graphical forms to evaluate the effects of the parameters considered in this study. Then mode shapes corresponding to the first six of the frequency parameters are given in graphs. It is concluded that the effect of the subsoil depth on the frequency parameters of the plates on an elastic foundation is generally larger than those of the other parameters considered in this study.

  • This purpose of this study is to investigate the association among mutual funds (MFs) risk measures and return parameters, evaluate mutual fund performance and also explore the best appropriate mutual fund performance measure for investment in Pakistan. Therefore, thirty-five mutual funds have been selected for the period 2007-2015. The Sharpe, Treynor, Jensen Alpha, Information ratio and Fama's Net Selectivity measures has been used to analyze MF performance. Our study findings show significant positive relation exist between Sharpe and Jenson alpha & information ratio (IR); Treynor ratio is negatively correlated to Jenson alpha and Jenson alpha is positively allied with IR. Moreover, association among performance measures, Fama's net selectivity is a major driver in leading to other measures but Sharpe and IR lead to Treynor ratio as well. Furthermore, performance measures are ranked in accordance standard deviation with the arrangement of Fama's net selectivity at top, Jenson Alpha at second, Sharpe ratio at third, IR at fourth and Treynor ratio at fifth position according to risk parameters in Pakistan. Overall, Jensen Alpha measure appears to be the best suitable mutual fund performance measure in Pakistan due to its practical nature. Finally, the Pakistani stock market index KSE100 (as benchmark) performs better than MF industry of Pakistan.

  • In this study, the efficiency of adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) and genetic expression programming (GEP) in predicting the effects of infill walls on base reactions and roof drift of reinforced concrete frames were investigated. Current standards generally consider weight and fundamental period of structures in predicting base reactions and roof drift of structures by neglecting numbers of floors, bays, shear walls and infilled bays. Number of stories, number of bays in x and y directions, ratio of shear wall areas to the floor area, ratio of bays with infilled walls to total number bays and existence of open story were selected as parameters in GEP and ANFIS modeling. GEP and ANFIS have been widely used as alternative approaches to model complex systems. The effects of these parameters on base reactions and roof drift of RC frames were studied using 3D finite element method on 216 building models. Results obtained from 3D FEM models were used to in training and testing ANFIS and GEP models. In ANFIS and GEP models, number of floors, number of bays, ratio of shear walls and ratio of infilled bays were selected as input parameters, and base reactions and roof drifts were selected as output parameters. Results showed that the ANFIS and GEP models are capable of accurately predicting the base reactions and roof drifts of RC frames used in the training and testing phase of the study. The GEP model results better prediction compared to ANFIS model.

  • Nylon textured yarn is usually manufactured by disk type false twist texturing. Dyeing properties of nylon textured yam have not been studied yet. In this study, dyeing properties of nylon textured yam according to draw ratio out of process parameters were investigated. The fact that microstructure of nylon textured yarn in amorphous region particularly is transformed by draw ratio was confirmed indirectly by measurement of dyeing rate because dyeing rate was affected by the structure of amorphous region. Dyeing rate at draw ratio 1.29 was the lowest because the higher draw ratio increase amorphous orientation and disturb dye diffusion into amorphous region. The microstructure according draw ratio was indirectly confirmed by 5% strength, tenacity, elongation. But difference in K/S value and fastness was insignificant.

  • The direct torque control (DTC) scheme features a simple structure thanks to stator flux-oriented control. It has the advantage of robustness against motor parameters variation since only the stator resistance is involved in the control scheme. On the other hand, the disadvantage of DTC is large torque ripple. To reduce the torque ripple, many studies on DTC-space vector modulation (DTC-SVM) schemes, which modulate the duty ratio with a fixed switching cycle, have been proposed. However, there is the difficulty in obtaining the duty ratio for DTC-SVM. Hence, this paper proposes a new duty ratio selection and stator flux calculation methods for reducing torque ripple. Simulations and experiments were carried out to determine the validity of the proposed method. The proposed scheme has simplified the duty ratio command and achieved the same control performance as the conventional duty ratio modulation method without using the information of motor parameters.

  • A stirling engine is a mechanism used to convert heat to power and operates on a closed regenerative thermodynamic cycle with compression and expansion of the working fluid at different temperature. The performance of a stilting cycle machine is a function of six independent parameters, namely; (1) speed N(r.p.m), (2) pressure of the working fluid p(Pa), (3) ratio of the temperature in the compression and expansion space ${\tau}(=T_C/T_E)$ , (4) ratio of the swept volumes in these two spaces K, (5) phase angle $\alpha$ and (6) dead volume ratio X. This paper describes the procedure and presents the results of computations carried out to establish the optimum combinations of these six parameters for maximum engine output for the machine acting as a prime mover, over a combined temperature range from $300^{\circ}K$ to $1000^{\circ}K$ and dead volume ratio X ranging from 0.1 to 2.0. The output of a stilting cycle machine can be expressed in terms of nondimensional power in several different ways. Four methods were studied in detail, the parameters optimized and design charts and engine power charts prepared. The results of this paper may be useful as a guide to the likely effects on the performance of some of the important design parameters and regenerator design.

  • In this paper a forward-backward can extrusion process are analyzed by using rigid-plastic FEM simulation. FEM simulation is conducted to investigate forming characteristics such as deformation modes fur different process parameters. Design parameters such as thickness ratio, punch angle, friction factor and diameter ratio are selected to study the effect of them on the pattern of material flow. The analysis is focused mainly on the influences of the design factors on deformation pattern in terms of forming load, extruded length ratio and volume ratio. It is known for the simulation that the forming load, the length ratio and the volume ratio increase as the thickness ratio (TR), the wall thickness in forward direction to that in backward direction, decreases. The various punch angles have slight influence on the forming load. length ratio and volume ratio. However friction factor have little effect on the forming characteristics such as the forming load, volume ratio and so on. In addition the forming load increases as diameter ratio (DR), the outer diameter of a can in forward direction to that in backward direction, increases. Furthermore the extruded length ratio is lowest with a certain value of DR=0.85 among diameter ratios. Pressure distribution exerted on the die-material interface is illustrated schematically.

  • Chromatic device was developed using light emitting diodes, optic fibers and photodiodes. Chromatic ratio and total contamination parameters based on transmitted light intensity in Red, Green, and Blue wavelengths were used for oil chemical and particulate contamination assessment. Chromatic ratio criterion was found independent of the particulate contamination of oil; but depended on chemical degradation, being more sensitive for synthetic than mineral hydraulic oil. Total contamination index of the sensor depended on both the chemical degradation and particulate contamination of the oil; being most sensitive in blue wavelength, and least in the red. Test results for synthetic hydraulic oils monitored corroborated with results of other tests such as viscosity, total acid number, elemental optical emission spectroscopy, particulate counts and UV-VIS photospectrometry. Chromatic ratio showed a clearer indication of oil degradation, compared to key monitoring parameters such as total acid number, viscosity and particle counts. The results showed that these parameters are effective criteria for the condition monitoring of synthetic hydraulic oils.
