  • When a football field is constructed using sand medium, the fertilizer management has to be adjusted because of the low nutrient holding capacity and higher leaching rate. The objective of this study was to test the effects of slow release fertilizers on Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) growth in simulated sport field rootzones with PVC pipe pots. Data of turfgrass color, uniformity, growth rate, biomass above ground, and the nitrate content in the leaching solution was collected at different growing stages and during four simulated rain fall periods. The result showed that the nutrient release rate of urea was the highest and that of controlled release nitrogen fertilizer was the lowest. Effects of the controlled release nitrogen fertilizer lasted 14 days more than other lawn fertilizers and 28 days longer than regular urea with acceptable quality levels of turf. The slow release fertilizer also restrained excessive growth of the grass, reduced the times of mowing. Slow release fertilizer used in this study reduced $NO_3$-N leaching by almost 50% at the beginning of turf establishment.

  • This study was performed to estimate interrelation between characteristics of sediment and nutrient releare from sediment in Dae-cheong lake. For the investigations, sediments were sampled in June and October 1997 at fish farms, embayment, and the main stream of Dae-cheong lake. Items for investigation are as follows; water content, weight loss on ignition(IG), porosity of sediment, Total Kjeldahl Nitrogen(TKN), content of element(H, N, C), nutrient release rate. Water content and porosity were measured to conjecture the physical trait and grain size. And weight loss on ignition was measured to determine the contents of organic substance. For the determination of nutrient release rate, $PO_4-P$ and $NH_4-N$ concentration of interstitial water and overlying water were measured. Release rate of nutrients which has direct influenced upon the water quality were 0.05-8.63mg-$P/m^2{\cdot}day$ and 4.99-36.56mg-$N/m^2{\cdot}day$. And it was found that release rate was measured higher in the 1st sampling than in the 2nd sampling. And for determination of the humus level of sediment, carbon and nitrogen content were measured by using elemental analyzer. Generally, C/N ratio is used to determine humus level of lake sediment. As a result of elemental analysis, C/N ratio was determined in the range of 7.64~11.55, so humus level of Dae-cheong lake sediment was estimated from mesohumic state to oligohumic state.

  • This study aimed to evaluate and develop $Eudragit^{(R)}$-coated pellets based on the dissolution using the paddle method. As coating materials, two types of $Eudragit^{(R)}$ were applied to obtain either sustained release form or fast released form. The dissolution test was carried out in phosphate buffer solution (pH 6.5) at $37^{\circ}C$, 100 rpm. In order to develop a sustained release preparation containing felodipine, a comparative dissolution study was done using commercial product as a control. The dissolution at 30 min of felodipine from $Eudragit^{(R)}$ RS or RL-coated pellets were 0.96% and 99.65, respectively. The weight ratio of $Eudragit^{(R)}$ RL pellets to RS pellets altered the dissolution rate, but did not optimize the dissolution rate. However, the sustained dissolution of felodipine from pellets was optimized by varying the coating ratios of $Eudragit^{(R)}$ RS. It is suggested that the coating ratio of pellets is the main factor which controls dissolution rate. Taken together, $Eudragit^{(R)}$ RS 30D-coated pellets showed the most comparable dissolution rate pattern to commercial product, $Splendil^{(R)}$. This sustained release pellets for oral delivery system of felodipine was simply manufactured, and drug release behavior was highly reproducible.

  • In order to develop a controlled-release oral drug delivery system (DDS) which sustains the plasma acetaminophen (AAP) concentration for a certain period of time, microporous membrane-coated tablets were prepared and evaluated in vitro. Firstly, highly water-soluble core tablet of AAP were prepared with various formulations by wet granulation and compression technique. Then the core tablets were coated with polyvinychloride (PVC) in which micronized sucrose particles were dispersed. Effect of formula compositions of core tablets and coating suspensions on the pharmaceutical characteristics such as drug release kinetics and membrane stability of the coated tablets was investigated in vitro. AAP was released from the coated tablets as a zero-order rate in a pH-independent manner. This independency of AAP release to pH change from 1.2 to 7.2 is favorable for the controlled oral drug delivery, since it will produce a constant drug release in the stomach and intestine regardless of the pH change in the GI tract. Drug release could be extended upto 10 h according to the coating condition. The release rate could be controlled by changing the formula compositions of the core tablets and coating suspensions, coat weight per each tablet, and especially PVC/sucrose ratio and particle size of the sucrose in the coating suspension. The coated tablets prepared in this study had a fairly good pharmaceutical characteristics in vitro, however, overall evaluation of the coated tablet should await in vivo absorption study in man.

  • In this study; the ignition and heat release rate characteristics of rigid polyurethane foam were investigated in accordance with setchkin ignition tester and cone calorimeter which is using oxygen consumption principle. In the ignition temperature study; flash-ignition temperature was $383^{\circ}C$-$390^{\circ}C$, self-ignition temperature was$ 493^{\circ}C$∼495$^{\circ}C$. The self-ignition temperature of rigid polyurethane foam was about $100^{\circ}C$ higher than the flash-ignition temperature. In the cone calorimeter study, the time to ignition of rigid polyurethane foam was faster as the external heat flux increase. In the same heat flux level, the time to ignition was faster as the density of rigid polyurethane foam decrease. Also the heat release rate was the largest value at the heat flux of /$50 ㎾\m^2$ and had a tendency of increase as the heat flux level and density increase. In the standpoint of time to ignition and heat release rate, the fire performance of rigid polyurethane foam was influenced by the applied heat flux level and density and the flashover propensity classified by Petrella's proposal was high.

  • Research to discuss the fire performance of materials requires tools for measuring their burning characteristics and validated fire growth models to predict fire behavior of the materials under specific tire scenarios using the measured properties as input for the models. In this study, burning characteristics such as time to ignition, weight loss rate, flame spread, heat release rate, total heat evolved, and effective heat of combustion for four types of wood-based materials were evaluated using the cone calorimeter and inclined panel tests. Time to ignition was affected by not only surface condition and specific gravity of the tested materials but also the type and magnitude of heat source. Results of weight loss rate, measured by inclined panel tests, indicated that heat transfer from the contacted flame used as the heat source into the inner part of the specimen was inversely proportional to specific gravity of material. Flame spread was closely related with ignition time at the near part of burning zone. Under constant and severe external heat flux, there was little difference in weight loss rate and total heat evolved between four types of wood-based panels. More applied heat flux caused by longer ignition time induced a higher first peak value of heat release rate. Burning characteristics data measured in this study can be used effectively as input for fire growth models to predict the fire behavior of materials under specific fire scenarios.

  • Gentamicin sulfate (GS)-loaded poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate)(PHBV) devices were prepared for controlled-release of antibiotics. In this study, the effects of thickness, hydroxyvalerate (HV) content, initial drug-loading ratio, and additive content on the release profile have been investigated. The morphology of devices was examined with scanning electron microscope (SEM) before and after in vitro release; their highly porous surface and cross-sectional were observed. It could be suggested that device would be affected by the packing of the HV and additive content, which would depend on their structure. A high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was used to detect and quantify the release of GS from the device. The drug release from all the devices showed biphasic release patterns, and some matrices released the incorporated antibiotic throughout 30 days with a near zero-order release rate. The release patterns were shown to be changed by altering the thickness, copolymer ratio, and additive content.

  • This paper presents the calculation methods of liquid release rate in the transition region when hazardous materials leak from the pipeline due to an unwanted accident. For the laminar and turbulent flow region, liquid release rate from a pipeline can be calculated by using a commercial software or by using calculator based on the models(equations) suggested by Crowl and Louvar et al. However, there has been no corresponding model for the transition flow region. In this paper. we showed that the turbulent model may be used as an equation generally used in the transition region for conservative hazard analysis if safety factor $30\%$ is added to the value calculated by the turbulent model. In this regard, we first calculated the release rate from liquid pipeline in the transition region by using experimental data on Fanning friction factor depending on Reynolds number which Lap-Mou Tam et al. had introduced, then compared it with that of the laminar and turbulent models in transition region.

  • The mass loss rate and heat release rate of puzzle mats were analysed using variable external irradiation level. Five samples of puzzle mat were tested in this study : Type A, B, C, D and E. Type A, B and C are all general grades whereas Type D and E are both Flame retardant grades. Incident heat fluxs of $25kW/m^2$, $35kW/m^2$, $50kW/m^2$ and $70kW/m^2$ were selected for these experiments. All samples were tested in the horizontal orientation and were wrapped in a single layer of aluminum foil. Each sample was nominally 20mm thick and 100mm square. The combustion heat and mass loss rate were carried out from Oxygen bomb calorimeter and mass loss calorimeter according to ISO 5660-1 respectively. Heat release rates were calculated using the equation ${\dot{Q}}=A_f{\dot{m}}"_X{\Delta}H_c=0.75A_f{\dot{m}}"{\Delta}H_c$. where $A_f$ is the horizontal burning area of the sample, $\dot{m}"$ is mass loss rate per unit area, ${\Delta}H_c$ is complete heat of combustion and 0.75 is combustion efficiency.

  • With the aim of improving periodontal regeneration efficacy, as a biodegradable local drug delivery device, drug releasing chitosan beads were prepared. Chitosan beads were prepared through the formation of intermolecular or intramolecular ionic interaction bewteen chitosan and sodium tripolyphosphate and were loaded with flurbiprofen. The mean diameter of the beads was $250\;{\mu}m$. Drug loading efficiency was improved by regulating the pH of tripolyphosphate solution. The drug release kinetics mainly depended upon the hydrophobic properties of the flurbiprofen, that is, the release of flurbiprofen showed initial burst with rapid release for the first day followed by a levelling off of the release rate. However, the release rate could be controlled by the formulation factor including the pH, concentration of the tripolyphosphate solution, gelation time, drug contents. From these results, flurbiprofen loaded chitosan beads were anticipated as biodegradable local drug delivery devices for periodontal regeneneration.
