  • Digital airborne image must be precisely orthorectified to become geographical information. For orthorectification of airborne images, GPS/INS (Global Positioning System/Inertial Navigation System) and LIDAR (LIght Detection And Ranging) elevation data were employed. In this study, 635 frame airborne images were produced and LIDAR data were converted to raster image for applying to image orthorectification. To derive images with constant brightness, flat field correction was applied to images. The airborne images were geometrically corrected by calculating internal orientation and external orientation using GPS/INS data and then orthorectified using LIDAR digital elevation model image. The precision of orthorectified images was validated by collecting 50 ground control points from arbitrary five images and LIDAR intensity image. As validation result, RMSE (Root Mean Square Error) was 0.387 as almost same as only two times of pixel spatial resolution. It is possible that this automatic orthorectification method of airborne image with higher precision is applied to airborne image industry.

  • Site-specific N application for corn is one of the precision crop management. To implement the site-specific N application, various nitrogen stress sensing methods, including aerial image, tissue analysis, soil sampling analysis, and SPAD meter readings, have been used. Use of side-dressing, an efficient nitrogen application method than a uniform application in either late fall or early spring, relies mainly on the capability of nitrogen deficiency detection. This paper presents map-based variable rate nitrogen application based using a multi-spectral corn nitrogen deficiency(CND) sensor. This sensor assess the nitrogen stress by means of the estimated SPAD reading calculated from the corn leave reflectance. The estimated SPAD value from the CND sensor system and location information form DGPS of each field block was combined into the field map using a ArcView program. Then this map was converted into a raster file for a map-based variable rate application software. The relative SPAD (RSPAD = SPAD over reference SPAD) was investigated 2 weeks after the treatments. The results showed that the map-based variable rate application system was feasible.

  • Many systems handle 3D-image were used. High-performance computer systems and techniques of compressing images to handle 3D-image were used. But there will be cost Problems, if GIS system is implemented, using the high-performance system. And if GIS system is implemented, using the techniques of compressing images, there will be some loss of a image. It will take a long processing time to handle 3D-images using a general PC because the size of 3D-image files are very huge. The parallel algorithm presented in the paper can improve speed to handle 3D-image using parallel computer system. The system uses the method of displacing images from nodes to screens, dividing a 3D-image into multiple sub images on multiple nodes. The performance of the presented algorithm showers improving speed by experiments.

  • This paper presents an efficient image compression method for memory reduction in multimedia processor which can be simply implemented in hardware and provides high performance. The multimedia processor, which includes processing of high-resolution images and videos, requires large memories: they are external frame memories to store frames and internal line memories for implementing some linear filters. If we can reduce those memories by adopting a simple compression method in multimedia processor, it will strengthen its cost competitiveness. There exist many standards for efficiently compressing images and videos. However, those standards are too complex for our purpose and most of them are 2-D block-based methods, which do not support raster scanned input and output. In this paper, we propose a low-complexity compression method which has good performance, can be implemented with simple hardware logic, and supports raster scan. We have adopted 1${\times}$8 Hadamard transform for simple implementation in hardware and compression efficiency. After analyzing the coefficients, we applied an adaptive thresholding and quantization. We provide some simulation results to analyze its performance and compare with the existing methods. We also provide its hardware implementation results and discuss about cost reduction effects when applied in implementing a multimedia processor.

  • The need to predict the rate of soil erosion, both under existing conditions and those expected to occur following soil conservation practice, has been led to the development of various models. In this study Morgan model especially developed for field-sized areas on hill slopes was applied to assess the rate of soil erosion using RS/GIS environment in the Dukchun river basin, one of two tributaries flowing into Jinyang lake. In order to run the model, land cover mapping was made by the supervised classification method with Landsat TM satellite image data, the digital soil map was generated from scanning and screen digitizing from the hard copy of soil maps, digital elevation map (DEM) in order to generate the slope map was made by the digital map (DM) produced by National Geographic Information Institute (NGII). Almost all model parameters were generated to the multiple raster data layers, and the map calculation was made by the raster based GIS software, IL WIS which was developed by ITC, the Netherlands. Model results show that the annual soil loss rates are 5.2, 18.4, 30.3, 58.2 and 60.2 ton/ha/year in forest, paddy fields, built-up area, bare soil, and upland fields respectively. The estimated rates seemed to be high under the normal climatic conditions because of exaggerated land slopes due to DEM generation using 100 m contour interval. However, the results were worthwhile to estimate soil loss in hilly areas and the more precise result could be expected when the more accurate slope data is available.

  • Low-cost microcomputer systems can be assembled which possess computing power, color display, memory, and storage capacity approximately equal to graphic workstactions. A low-cost, flexible, and user-friendly IBM/PC/XT/AT based image processing system has been developed and named as KMIPS(KAIST (Korea Advanced Institute of Science & Technology) Map and Image Processing Station). It can be easily utilized by the resource managers who are not computer specialists. This system can: * directly access Landsat MSS and TM, SPOT, NOAA AVHRR, MOS-1 satellite imagery and other imagery from different sources via magnetic tape drive connected with IBM/PC; * extract image up to 1024 line by 1024 column and display it up to 480 line by 672 column with 512 colors simultaneously available; * digitize photographs using a frame grabber subsystem(512 by 512 picture elements); * perform a variety of image analyses, GIS and terrain analyses, and display functions; and * generate map and hard copies to the various scales. All raster data input to the microcomputer system is geographically referenced to the topographic map series in any rater cell size selected by the user. This map oriented, georeferenced approach of this system enables user to create a very accurately registered(.+-.1 picture element), multivariable, multitemporal data sets which can be subsequently subsequently subjected to various analyses and display functions.

  • In this paper, we have designed a millimeter-wave passive imaging sensor that is able to use remote sensing and security applications. The brightness temperature distribution of a scene is measured with a antenna at an angular resolution of $3^{\circ}$. The sensor is controlled by a PC, achieving a fast performance by using a pan/tilter. The pan/tilter should be able to scan a 2-D image of the scene, with a linear raster scan pattern. The mechanical scans in azimuth and elevation whereby an image of $20{\times}20$ pixels is acquired within less than 400s. Raw images are immediately displayed and stored for postprocessing.

  • Until comparatively lately the use of vector data is the main current in GIS fields. Vector data have many advantages such as easy of scale change, small data volume and so on. But it also has some weak point that can't apply real world. The other hand the satellite images have strong point that can apply real world actually. Recently rapid progress of computer capacity and processing velocity is the current trend of the times. Therefore in this study I intend to develop GIS application based on satellite images with vector data and raster data altogether. This system is developed by using Visual C++ in the personal computer and MS Access's MDB far database management. The LANDSAT, KOMPSAT and IKONOS satellite image database were used in this study. Also, we are studied to set up scale for screen display according to spatial resolution.

  • Due to the development of the network and Internet, it is easy to copy and spread digital data. These data has the advantage of being able to be copy without loss. However, this has generated a problem over copyright. The problem occurred in GIS, too. Although GIS data acquisition is the major cost there is insufficient effort made to protect copyright. For this reason watermarking could be a good method to guarantee owner's copyright. This paper will explain watermarking, and show an overview of watermarking studies connecting image and vector data.

  • The digital photogrammetric products have been increasingly used as an accurate foundation for representing information associated with infrastructure management. The technological advances in merging raster and vector data within the framework of GIS have allowed for the inclusion of DTMs and digital orthophotos with vector data and its associated attributes. This study addresses not only generating DEMs and digital orthophotos but producing three dimensional building models from aerial photos of an urban area by employing the digital photogrammetric technology. DEMs and digital orthophotos were automatically generated through the process of orientations, image matching and so on, and then the practical problems, which must be solved especially in applying to urban areas, were considered. The accuracy of produced digital orthophotos was derived by using check points. Also three dimensional visualization imagery, which is useful in the landform analysis, and 3D building models were produced. Digital photogrammetric products would be used widely not only as GIS framework data layers by using the GIS link function which links attribute and image information in the database for applying to infrastructure management and but as geospatial data for especially 3D GIS in urban areas.
