  • Applications of lanthanum ion and crude rare earth chloride to the phosphate wastewater and fluorine wastewater, respectively, as treatment agents were studied. For the investigation of phosphate removal characteristics according to the amount of lanthanum ion, initial phosphate content was decreased by about 50% when molar ratio of [$La^{3+}$]:[$PO_4{^{3-}}-P$] was 0.25 and nearly all of phosphate was removed when the molar ratio of [$La^{3+}$]:[$PO_4{^{3-}}-P$] to be doubled. The removal of phosphate by $La^{3+}$ appeared to reach equilibrium state rapidly, and it was exothermic reaction since the removed amount of phosphate was diminished somewhat when the reaction temperature was increased. The zeta potential of combined particulate compound of lanthanum ion and phosphate was located for its isoelectric point at pH 5.5 and the turbidity of treated wastewater was found to vary according to the pH in a similar manner as the absolute value of zeta potential of the combined particulate compound did. For the treatment of fluorine wastewater by crude rare earth chloride, the remaining fluorine content after treatment decreased as the dosage of crude rare earth chloride increased. Whereas, the turbidity of treated wastewater and the amount of sludge generated were shown to increase as more crude rare earth chloride was added. The remaining fluorine content and the turbidity of treated wastewater were decreased and the amount of sludge generated was observed to increase according the increase of coagulant dosage under the condition of constant input of crude rare earth chloride.

  • Electronic and magnetic proper tis of the rare-earth transition metal compound, $LaCo_{13}$, are investigated by performing self-consistent local density functional LMTO (linearized muffin-tin orbital) band structure calculations for both paramagnetic and ferromagnetic phases of $LaCo_{13}$. The calculated magnetic moments for the two types of Co atoms, Co I and Co II, are 1.34 and $1.65{\mu}_{B}$, respectively. The average magnetic moment of Co atoms in the ferromagnetic phase of $LaCo_{13}$ is estimated to be $1.60{\mu}_{B}$, which is in fairly good agreement with the experimental values, $1.56~1.68{\mu}_{B}$.

  • The behavior of rare earth compounds such as $La_{2}O_{3}$, $CeO_{2}$, and $Ca(OH)_{2}$ on the removal of fluoride and heavy metals in the steel wastewater has been investigated. The removal mechanism of fluoride by rare earth elements has been known to be the formation of insoluble compounds between $F^{-}$ and cations such as $La^{3+}$ and $Ce^{4+}$ produced by the dissociation of rare earth compounds (To reduce the running cost of the fluoride wastewater treatment facility, their fluoride removal efficiencies were compared with those of inexpensive rare earth minerals such as natural lanthanide and cerium compound used as a glass polishing agent). All of the rare earth oxides used in this study showed a higher removal efficiency of fluoride than $Ca(OH)_{2}$ in the wastewater. In the case of artificial HF solution, the removal efficiency of fluoride showed in the order: $CeO_{2}$-mineral < $CeO_{2}$ < $Ca(OH)_{2}$ < $La_{2}O_{3}$-mineral < $La_{2}O_{3}$. However, the removal efficiency of fluoride in the wastewater increased in the following order: $Ca(OH)_{2}$ < $CeO_{2}$ mineral < $CeO_{2}$ < $La_{2}O_{3}$ mineral < $La_{2}O_{3}$. All agents showed high efficiencies for the removal of Mn and total Cr in the rare earth compounds. In the case of $Ca(OH)_{2}$, fluoride removal decreased with increasing pH while. However, the rare earth compounds showed a higher fluoride removal in higher pH condition, the optimum pH condition seemed to be around 7 considering both water quality and fluoride removal. Under the pH 7 condition, the $Ca(OH)_{2}$ was superior to rare earth compounds in Mn removal and the lanthanide was superior to others in total Cr removal.

  • A method to deduce the rotational magnetization curve from experimental magnetization of partially aligned uniaxial anisotropy system has been investigated. The curve obtained by this process has been evaluated quire close to the theoretical magnetization curve compared to that obtained by linear extrapolation from high field data. This new approach offers better accuracy for the determination of magnetic anisotropy by fitting a calculated magnetization curve to the obversed one.

  • In order to study the effect of feeding rare earth(RE) on growth of broiler chicks, feed conversion ratio, and probable harmfulness of feeding high levels of RE, two feeding trials with broiler chicks were conducted; one using a commercial broiler compound feed and the other using a self mixed feed excluding any growth stimulating feed additives. The the first trial used three hundred sixty of one day old Cobb broiler chicks for six levels of dietary supplementation of RE : 0, 100, 200, 400, 800 and 1,600 mg/kg. There were significant effect of RE stimulating broiler chick growth and improving feed conversion ratio, The dietary supplementation of RE at a level of 100 mg/kg was the best of all and increased body weight gain by 8.9% (p<0.05). Chicks fed RE at a level of 1,600 mg/kg grew as good as chicks fed feeds without RE and did not show my abnormalities. The second feeding trial was conducted in the same manner as the first trial using Ross broiler chicks and self-mixed experimental diets supplemented with RE at levels of 0, 50, 100 and 150 mg/kg. Differently from Results of the first trial, body weight gain and feed conversion ratio of were the best at the level of 50 mg/kg RE supplementation(p<0.05). In this trial all the birds fed RE showed significantly lower ratio of abdominal fat against live weight than those of the control group birds. Overall, it can be said that dietary supplementation of RE will improve broiler growth and feed conversion ratio and the proper dietary level would be $50\sim100mg/kg$. These results suggested that the proper level of RE for broiler chicks would be 50 to 100 mg/kg and its effectiveness is varied depending upon RE mixture. There appears abdominal fat of broiler chicks is decreased by feeding RE but further investigation is in need.

  • Systematic studies on the crystal structure and magnetic properties of light rare earth element(RE) compounds with Pb, $REPb_{2}$, have been carried out. Their crystal structure has been identified to be a $MoSi_{2}$-type. The values of the effective magnetic moment for $CePb_{2},\;PrPb_{2}\;and\;NdPb_{2}$ are respectively very close to the theoretical values of $RE^{3+}$. These three compounds are antiferromagnetic and exhibit a metamagnetic transition. The magnitude of the Neel temperature is proportional to two-thirds of the de Gennes factor. The magnetic entropy change for $NdPb_{2}$ is contrast to the value for $CePb_{2}$ heavy-fermion compound, comparable to the theoretical value. The magnetic contribution to the temperature dependence of resistivity for $PrPb_{2}$ is given by a form of -lnT in a wide temperature range, implying the Kondo system in analogy with $Cepb_{2}$.

  • The attempt for the addition of double-phase nanocomposite $Nd_2Fe_{14}BFe_3B$ powders, respectively, into several $RE_2Fe_{14}B$(RE=Pr, Nd) powders with high magnetic properties was carried out. The powders were compounded and compressed to take shape bonded magnets. By means of investigating the variation of compound magnet $B_r$, the interaction between magnetic powders was revealed. The result shows that not chemical just but physical interaction exists between elements. The compound effect of $Nd_2Fe_{14}BFe_3B$-ferrite bonded magnets was detailed studied. The functional relation was revealed between magnetic properties and ferrite content. That is $Y = 5.42 x^2 -11.34x + 6.62$. The variation of $_iH_c$ temperature coefficient ${\beta}_{iHc}$ with ferrite content was investigated. Following the ferrite content increased, ${\beta}_{iHc}$ and $h_{irr}$ were obviously decreased, compression-resistant strength was enhanced.
